Some prefer Classic Auto Air over Vintage air, specifically for the vintage mustang. CAA is not such a 'universal' kit like VA, more gen 1 mustang specific. I'm on the fence because both CAA and VA do not use outside air at all, so like, venting fresh air you gotta just use the windows, Lol. I may make a factory style a/c for my '68 mustang coupe that uses modern small Sanden compressor, best of both worlds. Ben Kahan, check out March performance Ultra II pulley kits that hide the a/c compressor way down low on the pass side so you don't see it as much, that's what I"m doing. My preference is good full sweep analog gauges over short sweep digital or electronic sensor gauges, any of the big brands, they all have both, pick carefully, because what Ben said he hated, the digital gauges are only a little better. Don't do rack-and-pinion steering on our vm's, it's not real R&P, and it doesn't turn as far. Check out Borgeson power steering conversion that has a quicker ratio, simple modern power steering and no rams like the factory mustang ps setup. Got it and love it.

I dunno man...your stang is exactly what it needs to be...old school cool. My stang, toploader, big tires, manual steer, no a/c...u sweat big time wrestling it but that’s part of the whole thing of livin the life. Although it ain’t my DD, so your choice. But everything now about your car rocks and is why I watch...please don’t do rack and pinion, 4 link, 5 speed...instead spend that money on a DD and keep the stang cool

For the gauges, I would look at companies like Classic Instruments, New Vintage USA, or Autometer. As for the steering, Total Control Products makes a rack and pinion conversion that doesn't require hacking up the subframe. They also make a bunch of suspension and chassis parts. If you want to keep the steering box style steering, Borgeson and Flaming River come to mind.

Dude if you’re running out of gas and on the highway just have jerrycans in your trunk just in case! My dad did it when he had his 1985 Mercedes Benz and the gas mileage is great but not so good on the highway and he would always have two jerrycans in the trunk just in case if he runs out of gas
@unicornsteaks67694 жыл бұрын
Overdrive is within reach. But if you go with the AOD you add weight and lose manual. If you go with a T5 you flirt with failure. You would always have the toploader to fall back on. Or you could just install freeway gears. I had a C Code '66 automatic as my daily driver for about a year. It got about 20 MPG with the tiny 2 bbl carb. But of course it was weak. The thing I hated most about it: Always something breaking on it. I had to carry a toolbox and extra parts in the trunk.

Im having all the same problems with my '65 the wheel play on mine is more than 3/8 of a turn to the right before the steering will kick in, although I also have bad alignment which sort of helps in this respect because the car now wants to pull right. The fuel gauge is a major issue, I didn't think there could be a problem as I had just replaced the tank, sending unit, and gauge cluster, although there was a problem; it read full for the longest time, the more unfortunate event was finding out the information was false; the first time i went to pick up a girl that I had a major crush on, and her grandma prepared to watch us leave from the driveway, little did i know i was low on gas, the car started with little effort but once we got moving the little gas i had sloshed to the back of the tank suffocating the motor and after a little bucking, she died. here i was in the middle of a neighborhood intersection with a cute girl and mom in the car (i only have a permit, mom had to be there). never the less i had both of them laughing at me as i limped my car to the nearest gas station blushing intensively due to extreme embarrassment. i accidentally parked too far from the pump, and i had to stretch the nozzle to the rear of the car as i had refused to get back in the car and embarrass myself any further by pulling closer to the pump. doing the math according to how much gas i put in the car, i had less than half a gallon by the time we reached the gas station. since that moment i have never driven the car without accurately knowing and checking how much gas i really have in the tank. and for those who are wondering, the girl we went to pick up who laughed hysterically at the event is currently my girlfriend. and she laughs everytime this past event is brought up.

Hi, as to the Gas Gauge issue, you have to have the gauge and sending unit match due to the impedance or resistance in the the sending unit, i.e. 15 to 35 ohm sending unit with a 5 to 20 ohm gauge will show full when your are near empty. Just an example. Best bet is to contact a Mustang speciality dealer such as Drake or Mustangs Plus, many others out there...

I never had an issue with running out of gas in mine when the gague said otherwise. I guess because I dont let it run below 1/8 of a tank most of the time? How to get better mileage. First thing, make more torque between idle and 5000rpm. The more you make there, especially under 3000rpm, the easier it will be for the engine to move the car. I get 20mpg from 455 Pontiacs that run from 13s to the 11s with Qjets, iron heads, and flat tappet cams. How to get more grunt from your 289, a cam will help as long as it doesn't move the torque band over 3000rpm. I like 224/230@.050 cams for most daily driver type engines, kinda radical in a 289, but a 347 or 331 will like it a lot. Stroking it to a 331 or 347 would help too, but that is another $2000 or so for all the parts to do it. More airflow helps, but like the cam you want to keep the low lift flow and build as much grunt in the lower RPM range as possible. Compression helps, but you are already paying $4 a gallon there, so going to premium or race gas will be prohibitive. I run E85 in most of my vehicles. You can run over 16:1 compression on the street using that stuff, one of my 455s has 13:1 and it drives like grandma could take it to church, until you open the throttle. More grunt in the low to mid range means you need less gear, so rather than a 4.11 you can run a 3.55 or a 3.23 and be just as fast, and with my engines faster with lower revs on the highway. I have run 12s in 4000lbs cars with 2.93 gears and in a 3400lb car with 2.56 gears. Its all about maximizing grunt where your engine spends most of its time.... under 3500rpm. Getting your timing dialed in, keeping the brakes working good and the calipers/shoes moving freely so they don't drag, an alignment with as much caster as you can get in it, zero camber and a half to one degree toe in will help also. Lower friction everywhere, along with rolling resistance and you pick up mileage and lower your ET. Going faster doesn't need to mean you are using more fuel, but at wide open throttle, you are going to use more because your engine is moving air more efficiently. My first car was a 67 Cougar. I stuffed a 351C in it, its getting a 4 bolt main, 4V head, 4" stroke 407ci Cleveland in the near future. Since mine is an auto and I tend to break manuals with my engines, I am going to put an AOD behind it because it will be my summer cruiser when I am not driving a GTO or some satin black sleeper. The early Ford Falcon/Fairlane/Mustang/Cougar/Comet is a great platform to learn how to do everything, they are brain dead simple and very easy to work on. I love those things almost as much as I adore the GTO...

A couple things that could help in your dislikes if you will. A/C.... not gonna tough that subject cause well, there’s options for engine bay and under dash.. just depends on what you want. As for fuel mileage, depends a lot on your tuning, rear end and cam. Yes the gear ratio you have will affect gas mileage but first off, consider your air/fuel ratio and cam type. I can’t be 100% sure but your car does sound like she’s got a bit of a lopey cam in it. Which could mean your main power and operation either doesn’t come in until higher rpm and or it ends at a lower threshold. Which means when you aren’t on it and below range, you’re actually running very inefficiently. Then there’s your carburetor.... I would seriously look into a Holley sniper efi system if you’d consider the tech. If the desire is to maintain more “originality”, then look at what carb and heads you have and consider other options. If those are stock 289 heads then there’s a bunch you can do with them to make it more efficient. I would guess the previous owner put 351W or C heads on it when the cam was done. Great heads for higher hp but cost more fuel overall. Check out “Uncle Tony’s Garage”. That man is an old school knowledge fucking library when it comes to this stuff. Especially watch his “Perfect daily driver” series which is on its 8th episode and still plenty to go, and when he does it, which is hopefully soon, a video on reversing pistons. I’ve been waiting for him to make that video and I think his intent is to prove the power gain. Lastly, I think this Sunday he’s doing a full block up motor build with some other knowledgeable dudes. I just started following him a couple days ago but he’s gotten me back into the mood of my car for sure. Anyways, sorry for the lengthy write up... just wanted to pass along what I’ve learned... also, I could be totally full of shit too but I’ll just do me anyways :) laters

5 things i hate about my 67 mustang: 1-handling. 2-over heating. 3-mirrors too smal cant see and hard to adjust passanger's mirror. 4-grear box needs extra gear. 5-break system too weak.

The best thing for mileage is overdrive. My car has an AOD and with 3.80 gears it's turning 2,200 rpm at 70. If I drive it nice it gets low to mid 20s.

I feel you on the wheel play and the ac lmaooo
@seanjohnson68995 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you gotta drive mine when we meet up. I got the gauges and no wheel play. But I don't have A/C. If I ever get a 68 gt coupe 390 I want it with A/C. Having A/C in a old car that works would be sweet.

I don't know if you use the power-steering for your car or not but get a manual close ratio steering box for your car and you'll be happy. They are expensive. If you do run power steering its robbing horsepower from your car same with ac but thats a choice for you to make.
@FourSpeedFilms5 жыл бұрын
I have power steering but I kinda want to go full manual. I’ve had lots of issues with my power steering leaking and it takes up a lot of room in the engine bay
@dustinjenkins17095 жыл бұрын
Four Speed Films for sure. You can get rid of it without having to change the steering box too. I did it to my 66. You have to change the center link to a manual instead of a power.

Vice grip garage made a vid of him converting his gages to digital but has the old school look still but with light up led display and accurate numbers, he put it in his Chevelle

So fun see young people thinking a half decade old car would be similar to a new car. :D Bro treat your vintage Mustang for what it is and accept it instead of hating it.

I have a couple of factory 65 mustang underdash ac units. If you are intrested just reply. You could prob find a good modern compressor to work with it.

CPP makes a great steering box! If u want it to drive like a new car u have to make the whole front end "brand new" i put a close ratio cpp strng box in my 67 impala and tubular control arms n drop spindals disc brakes but i replace the whole front end with CPP parts and the car drives like a new car! That is the number 1 thing i do with these old cars i go thru the suspension and brakes 1st becus it has to drive like a up to date car especially if wen u make them fast it has to be a smooth 100 + mph not scary "CPP" only other option is rack n pinion steering its a mustang so it is an easy endevor! I did it to my 63 fairlane and 63 galaxie "dearborne classics" has all ford parts u need!

If you want more mileage put a 5-speed in it and a 600 single feed Holly that's what I had on my 65 Ranchero I got 24 miles a gallon get a digital dash do you even have old-school ones that look good where you can tell exactly what temperature there is all the feedback
@FourSpeedFilms5 жыл бұрын
That’s really good mpg! The reason that I won’t put I 5 speed In is because of my name

A can of petrol and a can of water in the boot, towel, deodorant and a clean shirt on the back seat, and your winning! That’s gas in the trunk in the US I think lol 😂

You need efi. I got 3.73 gears with 302 and get about 18mpg highway or better. Without trying. Dakota digital to fix the gague issues. Fuel gage still not accurate tho.

I kind of know how awful it is to drive under the heat , since i live in HK when heat and humidity drives up . It could be your nightmare to drive without A/C Another MPG, I guess you might think about to change a better motor once you settle with the A/C

What I hate is not going to be able to enjoy my car I haven't gotten to drive it since March. Right now I'm in the process of doing a engine rebuild which has snowballed a little bit out of control. Cam swap the motor that's in my 67 is a 302 out of a 69 Mustang and I'm swapping the cam for SUM-3601 from summit racing. But unfortunately it's on backorder But I'm replacing valves valve springs Pistons etc etc I'm hoping at the end of this month I can be able to finally drive it just today I just got my new ARP head bolts in
@FourSpeedFilms5 жыл бұрын
Hopefully you’ll get to enjoy it soon! I bet it’s going to drive nice!
