When you die you leave the $$ for someone else to spend and enjoy for you. So, it is not good to be a miser and not enjoy the $$...unless your goal is to leave a giant estate and live low as a penny pincher. The only question is how much enjoyment to buy with the $$? I've bought a lot of stuff in my life. Nothing like the Collector, but still quite a few hundred guns over the last 55 years. So, I got a lot of the spending bug out of my system. I sold almost all of the fondling guns. That time is past. All I have now is black plastic...they are tools. I used to like revolvers, but Summer of Love 2020 cured me of gun fondling, no time for that anymore.

I've talked to people over the years who have wanted to collect something but they don't realize the intricacies of having a colection. Whether it's firearms, Barbie dolls, exotic cars, salt & pepper shakers or whatever some thought has to be given on many topics as you've discussed here.

Things that are important Rarity , Condtion , Providence, and appeal. I try to stay focused and stay in my wheel house. I’m not a rich man but I’ve been able to build a very desirable collection without jeopardizing my financing. Just my opion and we all know about opions .

I started out kinda like the collector. Buying off of a budget. But when I really started getting into firearms, I wanted to build them. So I started buying tools to do so and then buying parts and peice for firearms as I went. That way, I'm still staying in a budget, but then I'm building something way more expensive. A safe is a must have Or multiple safes depending on your collection. I wish I could do a safe room to display my collection on walls. But my wife wouldn't let me do that!😂 She doesn't care what I spend on firearms and accessories, but she does care when I bring such things and leave it everywhere in the house. Lmao, I mean, I wouldn't want her bringing her shoes into my shop and leaving them laying around.

I'm 64 years old. my first firearm was a single shot .22 rifle my father gave me on my 13th birthday. I mostly had a few firearms mostly for hunting and informal target shooting up until I was 40 years old. My interest evolved over time. For awhile it was hunting guns, then mil-surp firearms. Now I buy used guns mostly that are unique in some way and a good value. I recently picked up a Winchester model 74 .22 LR caliber that was made in 1950. That rifle is amazing. Super accurate with open sights and 100% reliable and 100% fun. It cost me $150 total. I have a few guns I paid several thousand dollars for used but that is the exception. usually under a thousand or more likely a few hundred dollars. I have a Winchester model 70 in 30-06 that looks pretty nice from the pics that the dealer posted it will cost me $500 plus the FFL transfer fee. The price plus the Tasco scope on it were the deciding factor.
@patnoble1914Ай бұрын
I started collecting old military rifles and pistols. The cost of ammo eventually lead me to collecting 22 lr pistols and rifles. I do it for fun but it is surprising how the value of the guns have gone up. Some that cost two to three hundred now sell for seven or eight hundred. They bring pleasure to me but I have told my son to sell them when I am gone and get something that bring pleasure to him.

IDK, its so hit or miss. I've seen a lot of higher end ARs sell for practically nothing. On the other hand, if you bought veprs before they were banned, you got lucky. Never know. Same with old military firearms. Pre 2000s they weren't worth much, now they're ridiculous. But again M1 garands have been stagnant for well over 2 decades while the carbines shot through the roof as have k98s. Need a crystal ball really. Even though he spent 1 mil on his collection, I'd bet a majority of his firearms would sell for less than half what he paid. He's got a lot of Gucci guns that don't fetch much resale. Now if the Dems win this November, forget everything I just said.

Ive had to sell quite a few good guns in the past, like my CzP07, Cz 75 compact, Cz P10, Sig 226 Equinox FN509 & even a 1917' Luger...but I also feel the upside to letting some of them go, and thats upgrading to a higher quality gun down the line.

I have some low-mid budget firearms, but I'm looking to slowly step up into a higher mid range/high end weapons at some point. I am also just about done building my first storage solution for my current setup, but I may grow out of it within the next few years. What would be a good value of weapons to start looking into potentially getting insurance for it? Also, how do you store and organize the paperwork/receipts for your weapons?

Id say 80% of my collection are unfired or taken to the range only once. I also have my favorites that I shoot all the time. People dont realize that collecting means just that... I even saved the original boxes for most of them because those too are important. My SCAR17 and POF rifles will probably NEVER be fired because those are collectors items. I too have been collecting for about 20 years. I was talking about trusts and such with my uncle and he asked me how much did I feel my collection was worth? Hes not a gun guy, so when I told him they were worth MORE than my cars, he couldnt believe it. The average price for a good quality rifle with all the mods would be over $2000. Sometimes the optics alone costs more than the platform. Now multiply that by 20 or more...

I also have a Winchester model 88 lever-action with a detachable magazine which is far superior over tubular magazines which I know from first hand. A person is not lame for preferring a lever-action with much superior detachable magazine over a tubular magazine. I was referring nothing at all to do with Cowboys whatsoever which is off-topic and totally irrelevant. The reason most 1800’s Cowboys used tubular magazines and did not use detachable magazines is not because they were real men but rather instead was because detachable magazines were not readily available for sale to buy.
