1. People, lovely people just avoid the drunks 🥴. 2 Scenery, don't forget the lakes! Wonderful traditional houses that warm up far quicker than the concrete/brick ones. 3 Food, fantastic variety of food. Lithuanians love their meat and fish. 4 Sauna, not experienced that one. 5 Lithuanian standard of living is generally not as high as other countries. People have had to grow their own food, raise animals etc. You will find in the towns and villages everyone has fruit trees in their garden. A lot of homes have a "bunker" to keep potatoes, apples, pickles etc at a certain temperature. People make do and mend culture, notice the cars. People maintain and repair their vehicles longer. One of the biggest things I noticed was the lack of rubbish compared to the U.K. The U.K. is such a throw away society when compared to Lithuania.
@TheLostBrit3 жыл бұрын
You are very right - good comment on the throwaway culture in the UK... people have much older cars in Lithuania, it really opened my eyes to how English people don't really keep their cars as long as possible. Definitely a lot more rubbish in the UK, I was going to say in the cities but I think you could say for just about anywhere really, even in outdoor areas you can often find some

Aš irgi džiaugiuosi šiuometiniu sniegu. Praeitais metais (2019-2020) per visą žiemą suskaičiavau apie 5 dienas su "kažkokiu" sniegu. I also enjoy this year's snow. Last year (2019-2020) during all winter I counted only more or less 5 days with "any kind" of snow :)

Your comment about shoes in the house reminded me of a visit I made to Germany some 30 years ago. I had heard Germans also remove their shoes in the house, but when I visited a family in their home, I proceeded to remove my shoes at the door, and my hosts teased me by saying, "no need to take off your shoes, this isn't Turkey."

Interesting facts about sauna's - in old times in Lithuania it was a very important building in peoples farms, people not only used to bathe there but used to brew beer there, also women used to give child births there because it is a very sterile place, since the bacteria are killed in heat:)

Bilberry is a good vitamin for the eyes, and it's a separate plant than blueberries. However, bilberry is in fact similar to the American blueberry plant, and the bilberries do look like blueberries. Bilberry has tannins - the same beneficial nutrient in red wine.

Glad to hear all the thing you like about Lithuania! The people in the UK are friendly from what I have experienced in Newcastle. The nature in the UK is absolutely stunning in a lot of places, and of course you guys have mountains where as we don't :) You have more castles than I could ever visit too! Yeah, the sauna thing isn't popular in the UK as far as I know and the British cuisine is probably not to everyone's liking, but I enjoyed it :)

Such cold soup you'll find also in neighbour Latvia, also in Estonia and saunas are in all Baltic countries and in sauna country Finland of course where there is a small sauna nearly in every flat.
@TheLostBrit3 жыл бұрын
Yes, heard about the cold soup being elsewhere - I initially thought it was only in Lithuania as I haven't travelled in the other Baltic countries that much! And yes - I've heard some very good things about the saunas in Finland... I'm planning to take my future father-in-law there someday, sounds like his dream country with the amount of saunas haha. Saunas are quite interesting for us Brits - generally we are quite shy to take off our kit in front of others (as in everything, not leaving on swimming trunks) but from my experience, you'll only find saunas in health clubs or gyms, I've never heard of anyone having their own sauna!
@lifeimprovementknowhow38223 жыл бұрын
@@TheLostBrit I don't know which part of UK are you from but you do have saunas also over there. I have lived in UK about a year, well some time ago and have visited later often. Oooh gosh, I don't know, that's a tough one! I think spend plenty of time researching where you're going to - bit like anywhere, but in Lithuania, if you're not in Vilnius or Kaunas really, the rest of the places are quite small so you need to be aware of that :) otherwise, try and connect with plenty of Lithuanians on social channels - before I came I followed and connected with lots of Lithuanians/Lithuanian content on LinkedIn, so I had a good idea of what was going on in the country. Not sure if that quite answers the question, but hopefully useful!

It does! Thank you! Are the salaries commensurate with the cost of living? My husband has a doctorate in electrical engineering and could work in LT. We know the salaries are low, but we don’t really care as long as we can survive. We love the slow pace of life in LT and the culture.

I think you would be surprised - there's some very good salaries out here, I've heard of people making more in Lithuania than they would in the UK. And yeah, the cost of living is low too - housing out here is pretty affordable from what I've seen, rent prices are really good!
