Ok but regarding EVF, that's just the initial turn on delay -- not a persistent latency while shooting? It's due to the way it detects your face, by blinking a small infrared led every second or so. They could perhaps speed up the check in future versions, I don't think doubling the frequency of blinking would decrease the battery.

The front dial is used for aperture when the lense doesn't have aperture ring, like the 16-50mm. Also, you can control the exposure if the exposure dial is in C position.

Hi Omar. A year ago I was not in to photography. A year later I am addicted thanks to you and this great little camera. Your video covered all the pros and cons and like you they are more niggles than cons. The biggest love is that I have discovered the world of photography so keep all the technique videos coming. My Hate is that it made me develop gear acquisition syndrome (or as my wife puts it "All the Gear and No Idea") ....Harsh but true! Anyways, I now have an extensive selection of the XF lenses and they are great, especially the 56mm (looking forward to your long awaited video on this) and then horror, I picked up an Xpro2, fell in love and parted with some serious cash. So now have the best of both words and no excuses. So wallet empty but have found a hobby I can do all the time. Thanks and regards Steve, Dubai.

I agree with the hate of the front dial its limited without any customisation option, Id even forgot it existed until your video mentioned it ! One of my hates was the viewfinder eyecup being tiny and no way to swap it to a bit bigger eyecup, I modified my eyecup using Sugru to extend it to a bit bigger size making it more comfortable to use... Ive never cared much for eyecups on any other camera apart from the XT20 :/

Pop-up flash not popping up: the pop-up is purely mechanical, so no camera magic is involved. I've seen a number of comments elsewhere that suggest that the machining is so precise that it takes only a bit of dampness to cause a vacuum seal where the flash meets the camera.

Omar, I’m a Canon shooter who got a Fuji XT-20 a little while ago to experiment with mirrorless and having a small portable camera for walkabouts and cycling, where my canon gear is weighing me down, good as it is. It’s been really fun to use, but I find it is a different type of shooting to when I need my Canon, it is slower and a bit more fiddly, and the size comes with compromises, as you have mentioned. The main pet peeve for me is the position of the bottom mounting screw next to the battery hatch, off centre and in the way, since I need it for attaching my sling (the Peak Design slide lite), combined with my other pet peeve, the SD card slot in the battery bay. Basically I have to undo the sling every time I want to unload the card, which is really annoying. With my Canon, I have a sling with built in Arca plate, and it never comes off even when using a tripod. With the Fuji XT-20, I need the hex wrench handy every time. I misplaced the wrench that came with the sling, but fortunately it is the same size as the IKEA hex wrenches, which I have a few of by now. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to unload the SD card, or stop using a sling. I like neither prospect. Another compromise is the cramped grip, you cannot hold it for extended periods of time like I can my Canon without muscles in the hand getting cramped, and I frequently accidentally press the rightmost d-pad button in trying to get a secure grip. I haven’t yet got a 3rd party grip, the existence of which is testament to a widespread problem, since the Fuji native grip is prohibitively expensive, and Amazon stores don’t always post outside America (I’m in Australia), which leaves the cheaper generic grips that don’t interest me. I’ve been waiting for a chance to get a Meike XT20G grip, which looks like a clone of the Fuji grip, but at half the price, and I’ve finally ordered one from a potentially dodgy eBay seller with lots of accounts and not-great ratings, but it is one of the only ways of getting it here,, the other is to sign up for AliExpress. Better the devil you know, and the fewer places that have my credit card details, the better. While I like having an aperture ring, I don’t love that Fuji’s lenses don’t use mechanical aperture rings, and sometimes without stops or clicks. But I’m not sentimental; Changing aperture on my Canon was always quick and convenient from the right hand controls. The addition of the touch-slide to change focus point when you have your eye to the evf was a bit disappointing in it’s implementation, not as good as Canon’s for instance (patent issue?), but better than nothing when you don’t want to take your eye from your composition. The one point I didn’t agree with you was the position of the lens release button, as I first used Pentax and Ricoh SLRs, then a Pentax DSLR, all of which have the button on the right, where you can securely hold the camera while releasing the lens with a finger, while holding and twisting the lens off with your left. It is one of my gripes with Canon; without my camera sling and camera bag, I would be fumbling the body and lenses precariously if I didn’t have a table to put everything down on. As it is with the Canon, I open the camera bag, remove the lens and put it in the bag, while I let the body hang down, face inwards, so I can change lens caps and get the new lens ready. Basically I find it a different kind of photography, not as fast as with the Canon, but great for walking around taking my time manual focusing with my 35mm f1.4 on flowers or the like, else putting up with the relatively slow focus on that lens. The kit 18-55mm lens is a great all-purpose lens as long as I don’t need fast apertures or too much bokeh. I find with the Fuji, I leave it on JPEG and RAW, whereas with the Canon, I don’t bother with the jpegs, since my early experiments showed I could always do better in my Raw converter, even when there wasn’t any dynamic range issues, the Raw just looked nicer even with the Auto adjust (initially Aperture, not Capture One). But with the Fuji, I get some really pleasing JPEGs, especially when experimenting with ACROS B&W. This way, I get nice B&W out of the camera, while having the RAW for any colour if I want, or a different B&W processing. Also, the Wifi sync to my phone is actually useful and convenient, whereas on the Canon I experimented but stopped using it, as it was a pain, and the jpegs not as nice. A quick Snapseed edit is all it ever needs, if that; SOOC is usually sufficient bar any cropping or artistic effects like vignetting.

Omar if you put your exposure wheel under the C (the wheel on top of the camera) you can use the front dial/wheel. If you push it you can adjust exposure compensation up to +5/-5. Pushing again lets you use aperture as usual. In Order to do this you need obviously to be in one of the various auto modes 🙃

Tip on lens removal. It's easier with one hand than two. Use the side of your index finger to push the button in, grab and twist. All in one movement. Bonus hot tip, use the other hand to grab the other lens.
@budthecyborg45756 жыл бұрын
I also use Canon+Fuji (just got an X-E2S) When removing a lens from your Fuji, don't think about it like that. What you want to do is remove the Fuji from the lens. Hold the lens firmly with your left hand, push the release button with your right middle finger, now lift up on the camera grip. It should feel much more natural that way.

Also for those of us using an XC lens can be used as aperture control ( default is back dial but I set that for magnification using focus peaking ) my only gripe so far ( I haven't bought a grip yet- on the to-get list ) is the ball of my thumb keeps hitting the right d-pad button so just as I'm getting the focus peaking lined up the screen pops up with sync terminal - hopefully the grip will move my hand forward enough to stop this....

I'm an Olympus OM-D shooter and I got to say I really like the Fujifilm and I want to love it. I really saw the difference to the slow response time you mentioned about EVF. Feature I found most annoying is the difference between the very hard click of the exposure comp and the soft click of the front and back dial. With that say...it is a brilliant camera. Gosh...it makes me want to have a second camera system.

Two tips and one thanks. I’ve played with a couple workarounds for the EVF switch delay. Both felt awkward at first but can become almost second nature. Rather than bring the camera straight up to your eye, bring it up through an arc that’s closer to your body to trigger the sensor (it will switch when an object is 2” away). Another option is to swipe your thumb past the sensor when bringing the camera up to your eye (don’t have to reach far given the small camera size). I admit neither of these tricks should be needed, but I hope they’re useful to some. Finally, huge thanks for pointing out the utility of Auto for video. I hadn’t made that connection and was shying away from quick grab video of family especially.

Nice one, Omar :) thx :) well, I think everybody has his own little pros and cons. I always struggle a bit with that card slot, too, but I got used to it. The lens release button ... yes, that's a bit weird. But what annoys me most is not an issue with the camera, but with the lenses or better with the front lens caps. Quite often I need several attempts to adapt the cap to the lens in a way, that it doesn't fall off. I never had that problem with my Nikon lenses at all and there has been a lot of grouching about that. I never lost a lens cap in many years I used my Nikons but already lost one in a year of Fuji. But over all I love this little camera and I really enjoy your videos. Keep going :)

I love your videos Omar! I got my X-T20 a little after you but I have not had as much fun with mine. Four weeks after I bought it it started to freeze up to the point that I had to take out the battery to reset it. I took it back to the store after realizing that it wasn't me that was making the camera freeze. Instead of getting me a new camera, they sent it back to Fuji for repairs...and after almost 9 weeks getting repaired I finally got it back...only to have the back display screen start to malfunction. I kept taking pictures like that for a while and then took it back to the store..and its back at Fuji (currently) getting fixed. I haven't had it a year. I love the camera and it's quality. Just so disappointed with Fuji. I understand the ka-kunk-koo and the damn why all too well.

Thanks Omar, I actually watched most of your videos before I even got my X-T20! You have helped me immeasurably! I too hate the EVF delay. To remedy, I am getting used to putting my thumb over the sensor as I bring it up to my face. The transfer from thumb to eye is usually a seamless transition for the EVF and its ready for shooting straight away. BTW, I use my front dial as the SS and the exposure compensation, press it and it switches between them. I can't think of a better use for it. I use the button on the back wheel as my BBF and the af button is my focus check. The back wheel controls the aperture. Between the two wheels it's really fast to set exposure with my eye at the EVF! I, too mostly shoot in manual with focus peaking. I'm sure I got that from you too! Thanks again!

What?? I held in my front dial for about 10 seconds and no menu ever popped up. Is that on a new release that I don't have yet??? Or am I missing something else?

"DAMN WHY" story with the X-T2. The flash problem happened to me when I was shooting a wedding. Did the whole first part with no flash because I didn't want to try to figure it out in front of the client. During a break, I went online and figured out that it was because of the electronic shutter. There is no message, no warning, just flash is greyed out in the menus. I presume there's something that explains it all in the manual, but who reads manuals?

front dial can be ISO: the top button, that you have for play is activating the ISO, then adjust with front dial. I know XT10 was better, you could press in the front dial to activate ISO

Why I like Nikon is I can switch lens using only one hand lol, it is so natural to tap & turn and I wonder why not all manufacturers do that.

The pop up flash has flawed design. If it gets stuck (almost always on my camera), it helps to kinda push it forward a bit. This unjams something inside and it pops up.
@Topper_Harley684 жыл бұрын
The push on the front dial is for locking the exposure adjust when it is in C modus. My only hate is you can't change custom modes when in video modus, you have to go to a picture mode then change it. It should be an easy fw fix, but nothing so far.

DISLIKES ... 1) I shoot through the 18-135mm. When using the flash, I often get a shadow at the bottom of each image, which I'm assuming is caused by the lens. 2) The grip, even for my medium-sized feminine hands, is a bit awkward. LIKES ... 1) Intuitive. 2) Lightweight. 3) Everything else! OTHER DISLIKES ... 1) The camera, purchased brand new, in-store, didn't come with a USB connector. Why not? Grrrrr. 2) Initially, no RAW/RAF converter. It became available last month - I've used it once - it is not at all user-friendly, and the converted jpeg files are smaller than those produced in-camera! What's the point of shooting RAW? OMAR ... Great video as always - thank you :-)

All lens releases should be on the lower right of the mount - just stretch a finger out from your right hand, which is there holding the grip anyway, and release, twisting the lens off with your left hand. No need to release your secure grip on the camera at any point. My Pentax cameras are the same. Why anyone ever thought that a lens release button on the left of the mount would be a good idea is beyond me.

Thanks Omar, great video! Definitely agree with a lot of your points, but overall I'm loving Fuji coming from Nikon. No regrets!

Fujifilm X-T1, the first camera I ever bought with my own salary. I love that thing but I hate the accessory door covering the USB-HDMI ports so much. Also, it has a 2.5mm mic jack. Nobody uses 2.5mm jacks anymore xD

I love your videos. I JUST got a Fuji XT-20. I'm a Canon girl. Just experimenting with mirrorless. These videos are helpful....but I have a LOT to learn. So many ways to set it up. I just want to put it on auto and go!

Hi Omar Gonzalez, I love your KZbin videos! I’m an amateur with a DSLR Canon and apparently thinking of switching into another better cam for some casual/street shooting. Fujifilm is first option for me to go for, then I found your page. From all your video has made me know all detail about Fujifilm. Now me decision will go with XT20, I’m saving up now. Thanks tho!

I must be doing something wrong. I have a lot of issues with the focus on this camera. Many pics I take end up being completely out of focus. The camera was focused correctly when I hit the shutter (focused perfectly on something), but the resulting pic is all out of focus. It's infuriating as I've used Nikon, Sony etc before and never had an out of focus image. When the X-T20 does get it right though, it's SHARP 👍 I've also found it makes questionable focus choices, eg instead of focusing on a car taking up most of the frame, it will focus on some tiny random detail out of left field and the car will be out of focus. Never had a camera do dumb stuff like this before ☹

From the fact that you don't always attach the grip on the camera. Maybe you should try the meike XT20G handgrip. It looks almost identically with the fuji's hand grip but just half of the price. And it's smaller than the one you are using but still give you something to hold the camera.

My hate: the crappy phone app. For lens change, try holding the camera with the left hand, grabbing the lens with your right hand and pushing the button with your right ring finger as you twist the lens. It's the best way I found.
