this video is super helpful! I’m class of 2020 and recently got into cal, im super happy but it causes super mixed feelings watching videos of people talking so discouragingly about it

honestly i needed this video! i am a newly admitted freshmen and have been feeling really bad imposter syndrome. i am such a regular student (academic wise), and i would hear how berkeley has the SMARTEST students. i felt really scared and intimidated, but this video definitely helped ease my nerves :)

Oh my gosh, me too. I got accepted into Berkeley into their early admits and I really don't feel like I did the hardest academic work load. I know it's more of my stats, but they weren't that hard. Did you stay committed to Cal? How's your time there if you did? Is it really that hard? How's your social like? I'm planning to double major in econ and public health (actually put Poli sci in my application, but in further research, disliked the limited job range).

@@trishab5815 hey! i did end up staying in cal. i am currently taking pre-req classes because i plan on double majoring in econ and media studies. the classes are hard, but studying and staying on top of lecture/homework isn’t too bad. of course, there are times where i struggle or do bad in midterms, but i know that i’m not alone. social wise, i do have friends, and it is not as cut-throat as people make it out to be. of course there are going to be people that will do anything to make it to the top, but i haven’t experienced anything like that so far. for certain classes, people will create group chats and discord servers, just so that there is a space to help each other out. the one con i will say about berkeley, is the crime. i’m from oakland, so i know my way around the bay area, and the environment here in berkeley is the same as oakland. but the crime at berkeley is on another level. we get warnmes/alert about crimes that occur either on campus or near campus, and it’s a lot. just about two weeks ago, we had a homeless person on campus that was on fire, legit set himself on fire. but overall i like my experience at cal so far, it’s definitely hard, but you make the most out of it. i hope this helps :)

@@danicanguyen7608 thank you very much! That does help. If you don't mind, can you answer a couple more questions please? How is econ? I don't like math, but I'm really interested in the economy and I'd feel it would open my job range even more. Is the math that hard? How is media studies as well? I actually was looking into that major as I was looking to explore different majors and saw media studies. It sounds very interesting.
@danicanguyen7608 Жыл бұрын
@@trishab5815 the math needed for econ is 16A and 16B, which is basically calculus. it’s not easy math, but there are definitely harder math classes out there. econ in itself has your basic algebraic equations, not hard at all. for media studies, i am currently only taking one pre-req for that class, which is history 7b. so i haven’t taken any actual media studies courses yet. but overall classes haven’t been too hard!

This really calmed down my fears about the possibility of attending Cal (esp the safety topic)! However, I am feeling somewhat burnt out from HS (along with major senioritis) so I am worried about the academics here, but I’m going to try and get myself as pumped and excited as i was before senior year so I can come to cal ready!! Just wondering tho, how is the drug culture here? I heard it smells like weed on campus. And I enjoy spending time with friends rather than party, so would you say it’s easy to avoid/not be pressured into that?
@thelifeofizzy72074 жыл бұрын
Monica c my floor in my dorm did smoke a lot of weed 😂 so it did smell bad a lot but most people are pretty considerate and if you ask them to smoke somewhere else they will! and for party culture, it’s really up to what you want to do. there are always parties if you are into that but there’s no pressure to go and there are plenty of things to do in berkeley with friends w/o partying!

This was really helpful for me too. My oldest brother goes to Cal and it has always been my dream school as well. I get good grades and I do volunteering work and I have done some activism in the past. I was wondering if there was any tips o could have for getting in. I’m going into sophomore year next year and I really want to get into Cal so anything would help!

Thank you for this video! Reading all the discouraging threads/videos kinda scared me, but this was great. Could you tell me a little bit about the internship (especially CS/software) acquisition process? Is it easy to get involved in?
@thelifeofizzy72074 жыл бұрын
im personally not a CS person but i have a lot of friends in eecs (electrical engineering and computer science). one of my closest friends got and internship at facebook this summer and tech company recruitment is in the fall so get started applying to internships early! also, a majority of interview questions are all technical :)

This video was really insightful! 'm a current junior in high school, any recommendations regarding furthering my interest in the Haas school? I've visited the campus before but that was a few years back when I wasn't thinking about college seriously, also I'm out of state (Texas) and I hear it's harder for those who don't live in California to get admitted to state schools like UCB? (Also if you don't mind me asking what were the top 3 stats (including any essays/connections) that you believe caused you to be admitted?) I also have a few questions regarding how the UCB system works with applying and going in undeclared... my dad is a Berkeley alumni where going in undeclared was commonplace, but obviously things have changed over the decades, and I'm unfamiliar with the concept of declaring majors in sophomore/junior year.
@thelifeofizzy72073 жыл бұрын
hi victoria! thats quite a loaded question hahah. i am out of state for uc berkeley... ive heard that it's harder to be admitted out of state but havent seen any data or percentages to back that up. all i know about that is that since its a state school, UCB has a quota on how many california residents they admit and obviously a majority of the student body needs to be from instate. for stats, i have a video on this, you should check it out! also i am undeclared and at UCB, if you are in the college of letters and sciences (which many students are) you are undeclared your first two years until you choose the end of your sophomore year (the most common timeline but people do declare sooner)
