HI! I loved your video! It really made me feel like we are friends having a chat about something we are both passionate about. I am interested in helping people through massage but also am unsure of how to join/create a network to allow me to go deeper into discovering how i can help people while not causing harm to myself. Could you talk about self care and schools vs self teaching and what makes a person able to value themself as a massage therapist? Do you have to start out working with little boundaries or can you set them from the beginning?

Ive been a massage therapist for 23 years. I am currently working specifically with professional athletes and musicians. I honestly feel like a lot of people have lost their interest in this profession because low paying employers, costs in maintaining your license and making it so clinical. My career is fun. To say the very least. Perhaps I need to start sharing the other side of massage more geared towards sports. Also- body mechanics is everything. Save your hands and arms- use your forearm and elbow! Make sure your table isn’t too wide and touches your finger tips when you are standing next to it.

Sorry you are hurting, I am 66 and still doing deep tissue and sport massage without pain or hurting myself definitely always advice young massage therapists to keep own body healthy with working out, stretching and good diet and not over due it for your own ability line 8 massages is usually too much for a female massage therapist.

I'm freshly graduated and agree with everything you've said. At least in the area that I live in the places that will work with you to help you grow as an LMT start at about $30-$35 an hour. Even just heard of a place that does a base salary pay on top of the pay for any massages done so you get paid even if there isn't a steady flow of clients! Yes there are near minimum wage pay rates for some places but most likely they are not a good environment to start or stay in. Hence the high rate of burn out! An entertaining video while still being educational would be the common red flags to watch out for in massage jobs! It was always a fun discussion to have at my school anyways.

That's awesome that they do that in your area. Here, it's not like that at all. I'm wishing you much luck in your bodywork career. I will totally make a red flag video!! I can think of quite a few.

I have been considering going to massage school for several years now, and just as I was getting closer to pull the trigger, and as my best friend went to school and is now completed his program and doing fairly well for himself. I actually ended up fracturing my proximal phalanx of my pinky finger and it healed with a malunion. I had to get several x-rays and CT scans and I feel like my hand has a lot more information and arthritis already setting in. However there is a part of me that thinks maybe Doing that massage therapy program could actually be better for my hand in someway. Because I am getting more exercise for it. I’ve always enjoyed learning about natural alternative remedies through herbalism as well as essential oils. I know they have different techniques where you can limit the use of your hands and also use other parts of your body like your elbows or even bamboo etc. i’m not sure I have such a good opportunity to go to school in Texas because it’s so close to where I’m at. Plus it’s a very affordable program. I just don’t know if I’m ready to commit to that yet. I would look at doing massage more like a side hustle part-time on the evenings and weekends around a full or part-time job at hopefully offers benefits

It’s definitely hard on the body to extend the life of my career I switched to working only on female clients and it helped with the boundaries issues of me clients sharing their intimate stories I married so can’t be doing all of that. I want to go go to school for massage therapy too. It’s cool to see this and working in a Hand & Stone right now definitely helps see first hand the pros and cons of being a therapist. I definitely see my self taking this as more of a part time gig and fall back as opposed to a full time career. Working as a dancer and choreographer I think that would be best so I don’t burn myself out for that. But I would love to work with people and help them with their body needs.

Even though I made $35/hour, I ended up leaving because I had tendinitis in both of my arms. Hi I enjoy listening to this video. I learn a lot about massage therapist. I am considering changing my career to massage therapist for a year now ,but I am not sure if its for me. I like working and helping people. I am 22yo and I am pretty active I go 4-5 times a week in gym. So I would say I am pretty strong and I take care of my body also eating healthy. The only thing that is stopping me is because I am blind in my left eye and I couldn't see well at night including rooms that have dim lights (nightblindness). I don't know if my visual disability would affect my chance to becoming a great massage therapist. Also my other concern is that do you think it is harder for a male massage therapist to get a job in a spa or clients? I hope you reply because I am very interested about this career and want to learn more about it. Thank you

Hi! Thanks for your comment! I've actually have met and heard of blind massage therapists! In fact, in school, we had to practice giving a massage without our sight, because we are trained to feel the muscle tissue underneath the superficial skin. It's a technique that helps you understand the different "textures" of differrnt muscle fibers so that you can access and manipulate the muscles effectively. You may find that being partly blind makes you a better therapist. Also! If you're healthy that's even better! You're less likely to burn out. Hope this helps!

I've met physical therapists that were also massage therapists although I don't know what order they did their schooling. I 100% believe it's worth it, especially if you know how to work for yourself or add it to your existing practice.

Thanks for being transparent (: On average how many clients would you say is your limit in order to care for yourself as well? One thing that I ran into about becoming a LMT is that (not sure if its required) needing to get some insurance? Im assuming liability insurance.... ? Someone mentioned how it became too much for them as a LMT because they would pay around $400 for their insurance. That sounds a little crazy to me, do you have anything to comment about in regards to being a LMT and and have insurance for safety reasons. Thanks in advance..

It’s physically demanding but also energetically, your working with different people all day long , you need to ground and protect your energy ( Reiki really helped me) or spiritual baths , to not take on others stories … clients tell you things that they don’t even tell their partners, I’ve heard it all … abuse / accidents/ depression etc etc and being aware of others personal hygiene, it isn’t always of your standard

It actually depends on what modality you do. You can do all the stretching and massages you want but it's called repetitive stress injury you're doing the exact same moves you're going to increase some inflammation in your muscles. It's definitely a physical job. Her video was very well-informed but she's leaving out a good chunk of details that they don't tell you in school
