What almost everyone DOESN'T know: The term "cheese head" was coined by a FIB (------- Illinois -------) columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. He was driving in Wisconsin and he got stopped for speeding. In his column, shortly thereafter, he desparagingly referred to the policeman as a "cheese head". Someone on the south side of Milwaukee read the column and thought: "Hey...I've got an idea". He fashioned a cheese shaped hat out of some foam rubber...sprayed it yellow...and wore it to a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game. Everyone wanted to know where he got it. The rest is history!

Can always tell when someone isn't a Wisconsinite from how they pronounce Wisconsin. Wis-Con-Sin means they aren't from around here, Wisc-On-Sin means they were born here.

I just graduated from UW Oshkosh and lived in Oshkosh for two summers when I lived off campus. EAA is one of the most popular events in the region. It was super cool to drive by the airport and see all the planes flying around and people camping for EAA. I’ve never been to it, but I know people who have and from what they’ve told me I can see why it brings so many people from all over the world

@@The3Dsmasha little bit of everything. Madison (and Milwaukee) are a different culture than the rest of the state. Maybe it's more liberal because of college students or just being a city, but the way of life and culture is different. Of course property will be more expensive than in other parts of the state and has more crime since it's a bigger area. There are some really great towns in the Madison area that are safer and less expensive. You also won't see as much of the natural beauty of you stay inside the city or don't travel very far across the state.

Most things they mentioned here are trivial. THE BIG THINGS are Property Taxes, State Taxes and WINTERS. WINTERS are brutal. Also, traffic laws are very strictly enforced in some places, even to the point you better not have your car parked too far from the curb (much less pointed the wrong way on the street).

I think the winters are manageable is you own a good coat but I'm with you on the vampiric property taxes. They should not tax homeowners who are retired or who make less than 100 G a year. They should tax income above. 200-400 G with exceptions for number of dependents, small business etc.

I have been living in Wisconsin for almost 26 years full time. I’m originally from Gurnee,Illinois. I lived in Door County Wisconsin. It is so peaceful in late fall to mid spring. My parents built a vacation home in the fall of 1979. We spent a lot of vacations in that part of Wisconsin. My parents retired in 1993 and made their vacation home their permanent home till my mother passing in 2018. My sister put the house for sale at the end of the year and was sold. The people sold the place. The current people who owned the house is using it as a vacation rental. I wish that I was living in the house instead of living in my apartment. I did live with my parents in 1993-94 with our 3 cats and even my sister,too. My sister and I did stuff with our parents over the years in that house. We had 2 cats that we brought up from Illinois. The cats enjoyed coming from Illinois to Wisconsin. They were both indoor and outdoor cats. Only one did stayed close towards the house to be close towards us. When I was in my early teens that I always hated to come up towards Door County and my attitude changed. I even made friends in Door County Wisconsin over the years. Even my father was from Phillips,Wisconsin. I even went there when I was little kid to visited my grandmother and even my uncle,too. The last time that I was there was my grandmother’s funeral a little bit over 29 years ago. I loved to see my 2nd cousin that lives there. She was adopted by my uncle. She is a Native American. I just loved her. We aren’t blood related. I treated her as part of my family since the 1st time that I met her in late June of 1993 with my grandmother.

Amen ! I'm more tempted to sell people on it, but yeah. Personally I can barely handle winter, but I also come from dairy farm background, and Dunn co. gets plenty cold although it's not the worst part of WI, and in short, we were understaffed, over worked, had sub-par infrastructure and systems to some extent, and times were really hard in my teens, during which we had that super awful horrible stretch of cold the February of 2016 I think it was. Things were a little better for my work conditions that really LOOOONG cold stretch back in, what, 2014 or 15 ? When it didn't get above zero for a record 6 weeks or somethin, and most of it was spent at 25 below ( actual or wind-chill, I can't recall but I think actual). It took years, after those VERY hard experiences in my teens, for me to be less fearful of winter. I wish I could handle poisonous creepy crawlies around, I'd move south, well, Pacific Northwest if it wasn't... ya know... . So for me the cold nearly is a deal breaker but yeah, most people here seem fine w it.

We have only one season here in San Francisco, and I’m completely exhausted from it - homeless people, poop and needles all over the streets season. Last night I was yet again awoken by someone having a crisis outside of my downtown front facing apartment, this time involving someone chaining their pit bull up to a fence right outside of our building in the rain. And the police told me that they weren’t going to do anything about it because that was animal care and control’s jurisdiction, and they weren’t open until the morning. It was at that moment that I thought “That’s it, I’m done with this place.” Yet again. At this point I just want out. Cheaper housing and less insanity is all i care about. Police that actually do their job. Sign me up.

@@livinginmadisonwiMaybe, as a lot of people shoot less often nowadays than back when, when they were shootin squirrels, predators going for the henhouse, and so on, throughout the year, year after year growing up. Also, my husband's Dad would only give him like 1 or was it 3... bullets at a time and told him he couldn't get more unless he got something. Made a good shot out of him... I'm probably butchering the story, no pun intended ! Anyway, according to my hubby, It's that there's overall less large hunting parties, with some of them tasked with driving the deer. Combing the woods and scaring them up and out of their hidey holes and towards those waiting for em. My husband's parents were older, both gone now, along with his brother closest to him. He's been usually alone out there, except the times I put on orange and tried to "drive" deer for him. The last time, I started before he was ready, and that was the only deer we saw that day. He did get a large one, thank God, the next day. He usually has finally gotten one or 2 at the last minute. For most of the week of gun hunt season ( what he does), he hardly sees any, and if he does, they're on a neighbor's land he doesn't even know who owns or how to get ahold of them, OR knows that the owner doesn't usually allow hunters to go on their land, sometimes even if they shot one who was still movin, and went into their land. So, as u see, it's not so simple. And yes, they really hide when gun season starts. After that 1st hour of gun shots and blaze orange, they HIDE. Unless you have a large hunting party &/or don't have land to hunt on with neighbors w woods or swamps who don't allow hunting, you're chances of not seeing any to shoot at are high. And it's illegal to shoot from inside your vehicle or a dwelling...or the minute after season closed for the day. And of course, that is when u see the deer. My bff however, dairy farms w her husband and they get lots of deer, and so we usually get our venison for the year one way or another. They have more woods around them, along with all those hay fields etc. , and a lot of family who have time and ability to bow hunt AND gun hunt. They get a lot of deer, and don't need it all, as they have their own beef too.

Most Belgian immigrants in 19th and 20th century went to Wisconsin. Actually the region from Chicago (IL) to Green Bay. If you have ever been to Belgium you would never again wonder where the bar density comes from. In Belgium it’s way more than in Germany or France. We work hard but we love beer and food. If you are driving at night looking for cars - good idea, looking for deers - a must. Along with other cars and deer, WI is a leader when it comes to drunk drivers and you are just as likely to be hit by a drunk driver as you are likely to hit a deer. Property taxes, they will drive you of your home.

Interesting personal fact; if you have lived in both Madison and Austin Texas a couple of times you will find that you run into the same people a few times in both places. Secondly, the mosquitos are helping you in that you have too much blood to survive a winter here with so much. Thirdly, it is one of the best educated places in the whole of the United States. The property taxes are insane. There are no real exceptions for seniors or people on fixed incomes. I drives many people out of the homes they own and discourages young people who would like to be homeowners. None of that money seems to filter to public school teachers or replacing dangerous lead pipes. Most of it goes to frivolous building projects like public school auditoriums or shiny sports facilities--- nothing that actually has to do with learning or giving young people a chance for a better life. People in local governments are usually rich people who want to filter public money to their private businesses through these unnecessary "improvements". People in Wisconsin worship sports in a cultish way. They will give these multi-million dollar sports franchises public money. It is truly sad.

Hayward is Great, but jobs are few, Land values are lower because of fewer jobs. Hayward is a vacation destination for most people with money or cabins up North. And drug use problems. But it's too cold for homeless people. Good Luck

Construction is year round here as long as the weather permits. They've been working on building & roads a couple blocks from the house all winter. Oh the humidity...yep had an argument with someone who claimed Wisconsin isn't humid most of the year. They claimed they lived here for 8 years (were from Texas supposedly). Tell that to my sinuses and migraines I get from the humidity & it can be year round. It was also humid where I lived in South Texas 5 1/2 years (but for some reason it didn't bother me). Wisconsin also had/have a large French population & some of the names are French.
@ajb.822

On the french names, yes, but some you think are French turn out to be Native American. We had a french workaway-er ( it's a help out in exchange for room and board connection site, we've hosted a few travellers) who was surprised about the French history of WI - apparently they don't teach that in France - but was confused by Prairie du Sac. Why they'd name it that. Turns out it's Native American name, not based on french at all, like I'd assumed it was.

If you're moving here from another state and from a big city Madison is going to be an easy adjustment because Madison probably has more non-Wisconsinites than any other place in the state. Madison is not typical WI. I sure never though of people doing much hunting around there. I've lived here all my life and I never saw a deer hanging on anyone's front porch. Usually it's hanging from the rafters in the garage. They don't leave them hanging for long.
