My dear brother and wife were frequent cruisers and often bought art on the ship. Their collection was extensive. After they passed, their children had the collection appraised and it was practically worthless.

This may have been mentioned, but I believe the resistance to dress codes is largely a result of airline luggage restrictions and pricing. When we took a Cunard transatlantic, it took a separate bag to carry my gowns and my husband's tuxedo...and I'm a very good packer. (I once did a 10 day cruise, complete including dinner dresses, with carry-on only) Yes, even on land, the dress of people going to nice restaurants and even the opera, has become very casual, and in a port-intensive itinerary, sometimes you're just too tired to dress up. But again, airline restrictions is a huge part of that resistance.

I agree. I carry my own luggage so at 72 I have to carry it. There’s always stairs or barriers of some kind you can’t navigate without picking it up. Checking a bag is expensive and could get lost!!!

@RandomRandomnessKCMO I agree. My wife and I just got off of a 21 day Caribbean cruise (HAL), and all we had was a small carry-on and a hand held bag each. We wash our shirts, underwear, socks etc., in the sink and don't bring a change of clothes for each day. We saw the guests in the cabin next to us come aboard with two large suitcases each and a hand bag, and they then got off after 10 days. Unbelievable. I know a lady who went for 21 days and brought 13 pairs of dress shoes as she said that she had to match each outfit. LOL.

Regarding the art, have you ever wondered why some pieces are displayed in stairwells on public decks--either hung on walls or behind glass cases? I do, too, and whenever I see artworks behind glass display cases, I steer clear of them--the cases--because I'm a klutz. Moreover, if you're ever aboard Celebrity's Solstice class ships, check out the art near the casino. Ever wonder why those pieces are there? Perhaps the ship wants to capture your casino winnings with some art pieces? Sorry, Celebrity: the first person to get a piece of my casino winnings, especially if I ever win a jackpot over 1200 bucks, is Uncle Sam, not you. Besides, no jewelry store or watch shop aboard ship will accept cash to pay for my purchase(s): Instead, these venues will put the purchase(s) on my onboard room account, so I'll have a hefty bill at cruise end and on my credit card bill.

The dress code thing goes both ways. The lines set the tone and vibe of the voyage with having a dress code or lack thereof. If you don’t want to go on a ship with a dress code, then choose a line that doesn’t have one. On the other side though, don’t be upset if you chose a line that caters to people who want to have a more casual experience. I think this is where choosing the right ship for you comes into play. My wife and I are going on an NCL cruise in Aug and plan to have our own formal night to feel fancy, even though the rest of the ship might all be casual. It just really comes down to planning and your personal preference.

I like the way the art selected for a cruise ship help sets the ambiance and 'vibe' for the ship. Traditional artwork for a traditional experience, more contemporary art for a more contemporary experience. For me, the art around the ship is part of sets it apart as a brand. To some extent, the dress code is the same. They make sense to me in that they help define the kind of passenger experience each line wants to create. With the spectrum of available options, passengers can choose with thier cruise booking dollars (or Pounds or Euros) what experience they want without depriving others with different preferences.

Plus I’ve met most of the artists whose work is on my walls. Personally, I would never buy art just for investment purposes. I could never sell the art I’ve bought. So it’s not an investment anyway. Interesting thoughts as always. My wife and I agree that we believe the art found on a ship adds to its overall ambiance and we often find ourselves commenting on it and checking to see the nameplate information. On a our first day onboard we always walk the entire ship to admire all the art and include it when friends ask about the "beauty" of a ship we have sailed on. In fact we have a hierarchy of the ones we have sailed on from most beautiful to least. Although, we have never bought art on a ship we do enjoy the auctions and have bid before--usually it just gets too rich for us. We also enjoy dressing up and appreciate a dress code as we have seen some folks in recent years push the boundaries of decency. I have no problem with casual dress around pool bars or the casual dining spots, but the main dining room seems better when people dress up. We are not snobs, but just middle class folks who save up for our trips and don't want to see things we might see at a local convenience store.

I don't have a problem with the art auctions as long as you don't think you're buying it as an investment. It's like any other souvenir. I bought my daughter a painting that she wanted while on a cruise about 20 years ago. She still loves it, it's still hanging in her living room and therefore it was worth every penny I paid. Honestly, I don't remember paying that much for it. To me, it's no more ridiculous than say paying $25 for a pair of Mickey Mouse ears. Too each, his own.

If you know what you're doing and are an art collector, you can actually score some stellar deals in the auction. Granted, you gotta' pay to play, but the auction is really just a show, a piece of entertainment. When you go down to close out the deal at your appointed time, that's when shrews negotiations can occur and if you were willing to buy mulitple pieces and you helped create buzz and energy in the auction, the park west crew will work with you and hook you up with some really attractive pricing. If you buy one piece, you're likely paying a 25% premium than what you'd pay at a land-based gallery. But you can get it down to -25% premium compared to land-based if you have a couple Gs to toss around and establish good rapport.

I love the art on the ships, but I also enjoy going to art museums and galleries on land. I don’t go to the art auctions, but art shouldn’t be purchased for investment value, but because you love it and want to have it in your life.

On top of that, if people did art as an investment that might appreciate in value as it becomes scarce, they would have to insure it. Careful: thieves will probably target you for that investment art.

I agree with you that dress codes have a place for specific events and areas; I also think since not EVERY area of the ship is air-conditioned that to be comfortable casual clothes must be allowed for people not engaged at those events due to the perspiration that would ruin such nice attire. I'm more of a music than art person myself, but I do appreciate art whether I'm at home, at work, in a hotel, in a casino, or on a ship. The campus of the engineering school I attended was chock full of art by world-class artists. It helps make a setting more human, less sterile and harsh. I've been on 5 cruises on 3 now-gone ocean liners, and certainly would not consider buying art, clothing, jewelry, or anything else like that onboard. But I considered buying art works and furniture salvaged from the ships I'd been on, after each of them was broken up for scrap on beaches in India or Pakistan. Never quite pulled the trigger on that, but the old ocean liners really did have some good stuff on them! As for environmental cleanliness in that table you showed, I was surprised that Disney seems to be the only one taking it seriously. I'll have to move them to the top of my list, from my current preference of Holland America. Might be a while before I'm on the open seas again, I'm waiting to see some statistics related to pandemic/health on cruises before making plans. There's plenty of stuff on my land-based bucket list in the meantime. And I'm not sure whether I will like the "huge floating hotels" which have replaced the ocean liners I loved.

My favorite art work on a ship is the “Commodore’s Cufflinks” on the Queen Mary 2. It is actually the spare propellers, which are mounted on the bow. They are there because it would take months to create a replacement if a propeller blade was damaged. But many people assume that they are some kind of sculpture. They do look cool.

I'm just about as working class as you can get, but the one thing I really like is the dress code on ships, when I dress up for a meal, it makes me feel like it is a special occasion, I am ex military, so understand the importance of uniform, so maybe that is a part of it, I always have my miniature medals in my dinner jacket, and enjoy the chance to show it off. It is like going to the Prom, or more in keeping for me, the Festival of Remembrance at the Albert hall. I wouldn't dream of turning up in casual dress, it just isn't the thing to do. Don't get me wrong, I am and always will be the bloke with my trousers rolled up, and a knotted hanky on my head on Margate beach, but we aren't talking about ferry crossing. A cruise is that escape from real life, a chance to be someone special. My only bugbear is the baggage allowance for a fly cruise, this makes dressing for the occasion a little difficult

One of the reasons for going on a cruise is to dress up for formal occasions. It is not going to be either Formal or an Occasion if people are just going to dress as if they are going to a burger bar. If you don't want to dress up then choose a cruise line without dress codes. Don't go on a cruise that does have dress codes and then complain.

Speak for yourself. I could list 50 reasons to want to be on a cruise ship that I care about far more than how people dress. First and foremost, it's a cruise _ship_. I want to feel like I'm on a ship, which is why people that want to minimize motion always confuse me. If you don't want to experience sailing go to a land resort, but I digress... I want to get away, eliminate stress, and relax, and what better way than to have a ship take you into the middle of the ocean far, far away. Worrying about meeting some judgmental and arbitrary dress standard is completely antithetical to that. You do you. If dressing up is your thing, go nuts, but I'm not sure why you need everyone else to do it too.

Late on here but my view is that the dress code is there, if you dont want to abide by it dont cruise, it is part of the 'contract'. Went on P&O Britannia for my 65th birthday with my son and daughter. On the formal night we dressed up, that is what is expected and meets the expectations of other passengers. The sad part was that as we sat having a post dinner drink a couple walked past, she was wearing a really nice outfit and looking dressed to kill. The toe rag with her had shorts, a ragged sleeveless T shirt and flip flops. It showed a lack of respect for his partner and everyone else. No dress code is fine but if there is one stick to it, respect who you are with and fellow passengers. I prefer a relaxed code with smart casual on an evening but if it says formal then formal it is. Respect your fellow cruisers.

@@iangill8984 Quite agree, we are going on a transatlantic cruise in a few weeks, something my wife and I did 12 years ago, and I'm disappointed that the formal nights have been reduced from three to two. For me, the whole experience of doing a cruise is about the glamour, I can wear jeans and a polo shirt any day but, it would be a bit odd wearing black tie down to my local pub.

A number of years ago I went on Celebrity cruise with a friend. He had quite a bit to drink and wanted to go to the art gallery, where this very slick “beautiful“ couple were the art dealers. He got completely suckered in and spent tens of thousands of dollars on that trip. Not only then, but in subsequent cruises and another special by invitation only events in Miami hotels, they have suckered him into buying more so-called art. They know how to press your buttons and make you feel “special.“ He now has so much “arts“ that he has it in storage units. I didn’t think one needed to be an art historian or connoisseur to come to the conclusion that most of the pieces were tacky junk.

I have only ever noticed the art when on a longer cruise. Shorter cruises, or cruises with few sea days, I really don’t have the time to walk around the ship and appreciate what they’ve got, but I DO enjoy doing it. It’s like being at a museum without having to pay an extra admission. But again, if I don’t have the time, I’m never going to do it. Two week cruises with lots of sea days (my favorite kind!) are ideal for this.

Art is the closest you’ll get to experiencing reality through another person’s eyes. You either like art or you don’t and it seems you don’t. I remember most of the paintings in the rooms I’ve stayed in and they relax me. I notice and appreciate art wherever I go. The only thing I mostly don’t like is when a painting is modern art and it’s just a sheet of black paper or some other colour. That doesn’t make sense to me but it might to others.

In terms of dress codes you have to remember that ships originally sailed with different classes of passenger. First class passengers dressed in full evening attire every night. This sometimes gives the false impression to people who have never cruised that they would not like cruising because think they would be required to dress up every night. However second class passengers only dressed up on dedicated nights may be one or two in a fortnight. In modern times formal nights are scheduled by cruise lines at different rates and people can factor this in when choosing an itinerary and cruise line. It is also possible to avoid certain areas of the ship and dress more casually on those nights.

I am an artist so I am happy to see artwork EVERYWHERE! And knowing the time and money invested in creating art I am also happy to see artwork being sold. The current 30 somethings are also more and more becoming art collectors even on a small scale. So I am completely ok with the Cruise and Art Industries working together. Frankly I would love an to see an ART CRUISE created for art lovers, art students, collectors etc where every port is a museum and gallery visit, etc. As for the TOILET issue. I am glad to hear the cruise lines utilize a vacuum system that saves water. As for idiots who flush things they should not... The Cruise lines posting a notice in each bathroom stating if any guest flushes ANYTHING other than their bodily functions and Ship provided toilet tissue that results in a stoppage that guest will be fined a minimum inconvenience charge of $250 AND any all additional Plummer labor & parts costs... Just that posting alone will discourage many guests from flushing undesirable materials. No in most cases you can't trace where the blockage came from but most guests don't know that. Just the scare of $$$ is enough to prevent the offense. Ofcourse there is always one or two idiots no matter what that will flush something they should not.

That you don't recall the art on a ship reveals more about you than others. Celebrity is my favorite line, and the contemporary art on the ships sets the line apart. Art enriches the atmosphere. Art can provoke thought and imagination. And while I've never purchased art at an auction, I'll often browse the auction galleries just to discover and enjoy the various pieces. Based on the revenue generated from the auctions, I suspect plenty of cruisers enjoy collecting as well. Let me ask you: do you ever visit a gallery for entertainment? Do you go out of your way to visit a museum? The ships are mini museums. Art enriches life. How tragic that its wonderful effect is lost on you!
