@@brandonfunke9415 we got Carpat, Megamo, Devrom and Bianki to also avoid surgery or cars. So far my fave is my mid drive Devrom, the rear drive Carpat is to much of a motorbike and dangerous to control. They are all limited to 25km, but on rough road downhill you want full control. The Megamo is ciclocross/touring and Bianki is city bike no crossbar and they are mid drive. I don't recommend rear or front drive. I got the Devrom at 50% discount since as a tall woman the male S size is perfect for me. It's blue, and I don't like the color, but I love price per setup. So comfortable now with cafe racer bars and seat spring.

Great video. I like how you went back and reviewed your predictions for 2024. Excellent job. For 2025 I especially like the tightening up of the regulations around e-bike/battery safety. Nothing here in BC, Canada yet but we live in a townhouse and charge our batteries in the house. I dread the day or night when a fire begins because of someone charging their battery while they sleep. Thankfully our townhouse complex is only two floors for each unit. I can't imagine what nightmare it could be if one lived in a condo or townhouse complex with multiple floors and a battery caught fire on one of the floors. Thus far one cannot put the fire out (hopefully we will eventually find out how to contain a battery fire) and one cannot simply grab the combusting battery pack and throw it outside. Tough stuff to think about.

Yes, if it doesn't fit into Class 1, 2 or 3 then it's not an ebike. The problem that California is addressing with banning throttles is due to most people abusing them, to use the Class 2 or 3 ebike like a moped. These are also the people who are causing the trouble and accidents on the trails. I always slow down when nearing pedestrians, and stop for horses, to not spook them. These paths are shared, and we need to be courteous to all the users. At the same time, it's not always ebike riders causing problems. More than once, I've had regular bike riders almost cause an accident on a trail, by not notifying that they were approaching, and coming much too close. It doesn't matter what you are riding, don't be an asshole.

@@Alan-l3i7d Rather difficult to do when it is a "multi-use" trail. Separate bike lanes and paths do exist, but some trails are for everyone. I'm not fond of dodging pastue patties either, but that is the situation. If we insist on separate trails for just horses, another for just pedestrians, and another for just bikes, we'll likely get none of the above, due to cost. A very good example is the rail trails that exist in most states. These are all shared use, although a few put horses off to one side..

This is a new industry. It is growing quickly and a lot of companies are trying to get in on the action. But it is inevitable that some companies will go out of business or convert to something different. Eventually the e-bike industry will settle into a few really good stable companies. It is the same thing that happened with the auto industry in the early 1900's. In 1908 there were 253 automobile manufacturers in the US. Eventually it got down to about a half dozen companies producing the vast majority of automobiles and some other companies producing a small number of specialty automobiles.

I think regulation is needed for those, but I think they should be able to be streetable with a few tweaks, plates/registration, lights, etc.

Being new to eBikes, and still in the research and learning phase before buying, I think I've developed an understanding of the different classes of bikes. What creates confusion though, is that you can have two different brand bikes that are otherwise identical, and one of them is class 2 and the other is class 3. Some bikes are affixed with a standardized class label and others are not. Can you help me understand how two different brands with identical features and technical specifications can be two different classes? And why do some have class labels and others don't?
@Albertkallal
@Albertkallal 12 күн бұрын
In many cases, the vendor simply ships a bike, and since these bikes are VERY much controlled by software? Then you get different specifications based on not really the model you are buying, but the specifications they ship with. (by changing the software). A really good example is of course bikes shipped as class 2 rated. That means max 750watts, and means a twist throttle is allowed up to 20mph. However, if you un-lock the above bike - say to class 3? Then you top speed is now 28mph, and that means it is a class 3 bike performance. In fact, quite a few bikes un-locked will do say 28 mph, but they allow the twist throttle to reach that 28mph. In most states, a twist throttle is only allowed up to 20mph, and if you want to go faster, you have to pedal. (even if you doing “fake” peddling, or what is called ghost peddling - in other words, you not really pedaling the bike, but are simply rotating the pedals). So, to reach 28mph, then you supposed to pedal. However, this area has been a bit gray, so most bikes un-locked with a throttle tend to allow the twist throttle to now 28 mph (but, they technically are not supposed to do this). One way around this is to remove the twist throttle, and have a small lever that works like a throttle - but it not considered twist. But, either way, for class 3, peddling is required beyond 20 to reach 28 mph. The other common reason for multiple ratings on the same model? Well, many vendors say rate their bike at 750watts. Then some vendors started quoting “peek” output or ratings. Often a “peek” rating can be close to double the watt rating. Unfortunately, then you now often find multiple spec sheets for the same bike - one has the watt rating, and the other has the “peek” watt rating. Unfortunately, with so many vendors now using peek rating, you actually have “poor” information as to what the rating of the bike is! This much reminds me of the stereo boom in the early 1980’s. Some vendors would rate their stereo at max watts, and that was much a “peek” rating, not an RMS watt rating that quality vendors would use. RMS = continues watt output without sound distortion, or better stated continues watts at less then some stated % distortion). Max peek watts for the stereo = max power output in short bursts - which is be quite large! So, this is exactly the same issue with ebikes - peek vs continues watt output. Same goes for say a window air conditioner or fridge. When the fridge starts up, it can pull HUGE amounts of watts - you often see the lights dim a bit in the room. So, that’s the peek watt pull vs the continues watt rating for that fridge/air conditioner. We now have this same “nonsense” occurring from many bike vendors. I don’t blame ebike vendors too much. All it took was one vendor to use a peek motor watt rating. The result was consumers buying that bike, since they thought it had a better and higher watt rating then many of the other bikes they were shopping for. So, now boatloads of consumers thus would purchase a 1300 watt rated bike over a 750 watt bike - but they are the SAME bike, just different rating being used. So, many vendors had to follow this trend, or miss out on sales. The result is multiple specification sheets for a bike. One for regulators, and one for consumers buying the bike. So, the above reason (peek burst power vs continues rating), and that of software being able to change the performance of the bike are the two most common reasons for multiple and different ratings for the same bike.

A lot of bikes are designed to work as either class 2 or class 3. A manufacturer might choose to label the bike as one class or the other. But the new California law makes it clear that it can only be one or the other. If a bike has a throttle, it can't be a class 3 bike, per California. A bike with a throttle must be a class 2 bike, limited to 20mph top speed, and no faster with pedal assist as that would put in class 3 territory. One of the manufacturers (Specialized) is making available a firmware update so you can "upgrade" the bike to class 2 only operation. to comply with California's new law (taking away the pedal assist up to 28mph mode).

Sodium batteries have lower density, and lower voltage than lithium, making them less than ideal for electric vehicles. Where they are useful is as cheap storage of excess power from renewables.

@LucidDreamer54321 11 күн бұрын
@AWriterWandering Yes, sodium batteries do have “lower energy density” (amount of stored potential energy relative to its weight or volume) and lower voltage per cell. Those are deficiencies that are being improved right now by companies such as CATL, Engelhorn Tech, Farasis Energy, TAILG, TaiSan, and Yadea. And sodium battery vehicles such as e-bikes, motorcycles, and cars are starting to become available now. The future looks bright for sodium batteries.

Look for models with shorter reach. Also consider brands that offer bikes in multiple frame sizes. You can also try looking for ones that come with bars that sweep back towards the rider, such as cruiser, moustache, BMX, Dutch style bars, or get one yourself to replace the typical straight or low-rise MTB bars that typically come on most bikes. As a shorter rider, the 170-175mm cranks that typically come on bikes in the US are probably too long. Start at a crank length that is 20% of your inseam with shoes on under the balls of your feet, and adjust from there. Cranks of lengths besides the typical 170-175 length used to cost a lot in the US and Canada, but they’re commonplace enough now you can get a set for around $20-25.

In California, any ebike with a motor that peaks over 750w is no longer an electric bicycle, no matter what it's top speed is. Any ebike that is designed to operate as either class 2 (throttle up to 20mph) or class 3 (pedal assist up to 28mph) is no longer an electric bicycle. It must be one or the other, not both. Class 3 bicycles cannot have throttles at all. If you want to ride on public roads, these ebikes can't be ridden in bicycle lanes and must be registered as mopeds, you must get a motorcycle license and ride with car traffic.

Micah, As we age, I am beginning to lose more and more of my ability to participate in most of my favorite activities. Hoping you are correct in your prediction of 2025 being a year that some bikes are going to be available to someone like myself. I am interested but afraid. One day last summer, I borrowed a new Lectric XPEAK from a friend here in Hazleton, PA. Going downhill the front of the bike started to wobble in a fashion that I was barely able to control! My speed at the time was about 18 mph and the motor was set to off at the time. Nearly dumped into the ravine beside the road. I'm thinking that the smaller 20 inch wheels of the OhWow Voltaic on which you are sitting perhaps might be more stable????? Haven't purchased an ebike as yet. They seem to be very expensive. There certainly pressure to do so. I like your insights. Thank you for sharing. Shame about the higher end tier e-bikes. I ride a Juiced company RipCurrent S model with the extra large frame. What I notice is most people don't pedal at all. That seems so lame to me when you're on a bike. Another thing I've noticed with my and my friends eBikes was the gearing being excessively tall. While that can get one a higher max speed, it became clear to me that high speed number was irrelevant to my riding style. What we wanted was lower gearing for when we got into the hills. I didn't want to just ride along on throttle, but really put some effort into my bike riding experience. We've now all reduced the front chain ring tooth count drastically. I went from 52 teeth down to 39 and am much happier with that setup.

I don’t doubt for a second that governments will throttle down e-bikes, it’s the institutional imperative of government to “get in the way” wherever people are moving. As e-bikes numbers increase legislators, always seeking an issue to get their names in the news, will try to write restrictions. A problem that legislators will encounter, an “externality “ in polical science-speak, is that athletic types around colleges often achieve highway speeds without any electrical assistance on their super-light racing bicycles.

@EbikeSchool i just looked it up online. And there were around three thousand ebike fires between twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three in the United States.. There were 267 ebike fires in New York alone in that year and more than 60 ebike fires in Houston Texas that same year. Electric vehicles, on the other hand had about twenty fires in that same time nationwide. You believe that three thousand fires in twelve months isn't a concern? If you promote a certain industry as an influencer, you will get the most respect by giving the most honest take on what's happening. With ebikes at large, whether negative or positive. People really need to keep their bikes outside away from the house if they are charging, especiallyat night while sleeping.
