You don't use the handbrake when you're drifting. When drifting, let the engine do the work. Unsettle the car without using the handbrake. It may mean throwing the weight around with a Scandinavian flick, which is where you steer the wrong way and then the right way, especially in a front wheel drive car, in which case, you have to be going faster too.

Just a note: You don't need to rev the engine in order to warm up the car, the normal revs are fine and they're enough to lubricate, warm up, etc.

Depending on the type of car a clutch can last up to 300,000 KM

Real steep hills require the hand brake to cope with rolling back; however, moderate hills can be attacked with a little judicious footwork. I keep my foot on the brake bringing the revs up to about 2000 and quickly shift into gear and let out the clutch. You'll roll back about an inch or two but remember you have inertia on your side. One thing I do when coming to a stop is slip out of gear without using the clutch. Yeah, yeah, I know I shouldn't but modern synchro-mesh transmissions will let you do it as the engine revs match the drive shaft speed. I also like to shift w/o the clutch but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone who hasn't learned how to do it. You'll end up with a bucket of gears on the ground. Bottom line manual transmissions are wicked fun!

So going on with the "hill start" point, I've kind of taken to putting the car in gear with my foot still on the regular brake, releasing the clutch to the biting point, and just quickly jumping to the accelerator to slowly ease into the motion of getting the car moving. Is this basically what was described as what NOT to do in this situation? Or does that kind of follow the same procedure as using the hand brake? I like knowing all I can about what to do and what not to do with my cars, especially my stick shift Miata since it's my first car with a stick, and I've had it for almost a year. Other than the occasional gear grinds I've had, I don't think I have really any problems in my car.

I'm guilty of number 3. I passed my test, but in my driving instructors car, hill starts were easy. In my 2003 Ford KA, hill starts are a nightmare. You need LOADS of revs to stop it stalling, and I'm talking about the massive revs that don't sound right, and then after that, i get a load of clutch judder which feels like I've crashed the car. Dad bought the car, so naturally won't do anything about it, won't let me take it to a garage, and quite frankly I can't stand it so may be buying a newer car (If I can get more work to afford it obviously).

Random Sarah Grace you gotta learn how to slip the clutch better at lower revs. unless the car is POWERLESS you should be able to keep tge revs just a little above idle and then give it gas to keep it there as you slip the clutch, thats the right way to takeoff

the throwout bearing on my 2004 focus didnt have a grinding sound, it did have a high pitched squeel when engaging in first or second gear. the previous owner probably rested his foot on the pedal a lot. but it wasnt too expensive to fix in my case

Apply handbrake when uphill, When you are sure the biting point is good enough & revs are ok to move forward only then let go of handbrake That way you will never roll backwards

I know I know practice makes perfect- but just starting out and I really don't get how you guys can drive manual and talk and everything else. Hey, thanks for the feedback! I've got a whole video explaining rev matching but it's basically when you're slowing down and need to go into a lower gear you can "blip" the throttle to bring up the revs and take the stress off the clutch. It's something that you don't need to do really, but just takes some wear off the car in the long run! :)

recently scraped a 1.4 hyundai getz with 250,000 miles on the clock and only replaced the clutch at 150,000 and the was driven to the ragged edge every day of its life with rev matching

I don't rev match when I downshift and it isn't jerky at all. I just brake down to the slowest speed for that gear and then shift and slowly let out the clutch. Is that still alright?

Yeah that's absolutely fine for normal driving! If you don't want to revmatch you don't have to, you'll just have to be very gentle with releasing the clutch.

Wouldnt that be considered riding the clutch? If you slowly release the clutch to speed your engine up that causes wear on the clutch.. Im just speculating but you can speed up your engine by pressing on the gas, or using the clutch and the force of the tires spinning.. clutches are expensive to replace.. I could be 100% wrong.

MorganFromNewZealand that honestly sounds like more work than rev matching, just shift down one or two(so long as you're not revving the crap out of it to do it) gears into a lower one before you get to the stop and stop completely in the gear. if you meant while driving normally and not stopping why not rev match? if you let the clutch out slowly then yeah it'll wear faster, but itll still last a looong time so long as you dont abuse it

can i skip gears when slowing down? for example i'm in 4th gear but i want to slow down, so i break till 20km/h and change to 2nd gear without going on the 3rd? i'm well aware of downshifting but my instructor said i don't have to do that. i have already passed my driving test with skipping a gear.

Is this bad. When I am at a stop, or on a hill when i am about to take off, like at the last car goes past I let the clutch out a bit while I hold the break so that the car wont role back when i go break the throttle I mostly do this in my car with a heavey clutch and 3L turbo so it is pretty powerful the car doesnt need the accelerator to take off unless i need to go extra quick. In my smaller car (2.8 no turbo) I do it less often

when stopped best put it into neutral and get off the clutch so the spring isnt under compression for long periods (plus you get to rest for a few seconds). If you dont recomend resting foot on the clutch where should you rest it and still be able to get to it quickly incase shit hits the fan? (only asking because i dont have a dead pedal)

Hand on the gearstick, no problem. Every car I've driven had a sprung lever for reverse lockout, and the selectors have a sprung detent holding the forks etc in a locked position. Riding the clutch, definitely bad, but you can always cover it. This may matter in emergency situations where the extra time could count. Clutch holding on a hill. Bad driving. speed matching is racing technique. Use in normal driving is useful I suppose, but not required, because the retarding force from the clutch GENTLY speeding up the engine is a useful braking adjunct. Particularly in low grip situations. As well as economy technique. It saves wear and tear on the braking system as well as the tires. While matching possibly saves on clutch wear, that has to be offest against the cost of fuel used in blipping the throttle repeatedly, as well as general wear on the engine components. I would say it's a lottery outcome.

I used to be a dab hand with the handbrake. I once parallel parked in a queue of traffic because I made a mistake and got stuck in the middle of a junction as the lights changed. I accelerated perpendicular to the queue and aimed the car at the space / car in front's rear bumper with the front right edge with mine applied the handbrake and slid in stopping perfectly square and about 2 inched off the curb. I was well pleased :) hah. I gave up after owning a bmw. The handbrake is terrible in E46's.

My new Mazda 3 has hill launch assist and an electronic parking brake because Satan. I also learned on a car with a pedal parking brake. My technique has always been: lift off the clutch just enough to get an appreciable dip in RPM, and that should give you enough time to get from brake to gas without much or any roll back. In theory, I understand exactly how hill starts are supposed to work. I put the handbrake in and I'm sitting waiting to go. Find the biting point. Higher revs than on flat ground. slowly release the clutch until I feel the car shift forward, but then when I release the handbrake, it stalls. Any tips?

Danny ray it's safer to leave the car in gear with the clutch out when going down hill, otherwise you have no engine braking. If you're going down a big hill with national speed then might as well pop it out of gear and let it roll down though

If your clutch is all the way in it won't be wearing the plates at all. It's more trouble then it's worth to pop the car out of gear going down hill, might as well keep it in gear so you have a little more control over it.

At least depending where you are anyway. Where I am I have a massive hill that goes down then back up.. it's national speed limit until the top so let it roll down, by the time I reach the top I'm at the speed limit - 40. I'd only suggest doing it if no cars are in front of you though. Suppose it's just what your driving style is

For example in my car(Skoda Octavia '15) I can't h&t because the distance between brake and gas is too big for my feet. In normal driving with a little braking is too impossible to reach the gas pedal.

I understand, my car is pretty much on the limit too and it is a little bit tricky to reach the throttle sometimes too. It's always possible to get a different pedal set and adjust the reach if it's completely out of the question with the stock set. Sometimes it's not worth it though! :P

I'd agree to a certain extent, the fact that VW basically made a certain model and effectively changed the name and badge to a seat is clear the brand doesn't exist anymore. Most seats now have the VW chassis and engine but they're a lot more reliable than they used to be

I never let my car start cold, I wait for the car to run for a bit so the AC can kick in. It gets hot in the summers, man. Also, as someone learning to drive a manual, got any tips for what to do for when you accidentally shift into the wrong gear? (ex: Shifting from 3 to 2 instead of 4) What i do is simply shift back into the gear i wanted, and i've got a feeling that's really bad.

You can shift straight back to the gear you wanted no worries, just make sure you catch the problem as soon as possible by dipping the clutch if you shift to a lower gear by accident. If you shift from say 2nd to 1st instead of 3rd whilst accelerating hard you can do a lot of damage.

Warmup a car is an old concept now it is recommended to just start and wait few seconds and go. Google search can clear this thing. Especially new car having advanced system rather than old carburetor systems need not warm up and warming harm the piston cylinder....

you should talk about how cars may feel different e.g. heavier or wider cars have a different steering feeling and larger displacement engines react to input on accelerator and the clutch (my experience is a larger engine gives you more control over the car and there is more leniency with the clutch's biting point so your less likely to stall the car). also differences between diesel and petrol weather conditions and how driving a car the wrong way e.g. 1l ecoboost 90ps corsa with handbrake turns revving to the red line and slamming on brakes will not just effect cars wear but control. and the real truth about driving is if your not in a rush you should have a comfy ride without damaging car, loosing control, tickets or hitting a pedestrian crossing road.

My old car was a 206, and whoever has driven one of those before would know how shit hill starts are to preform in them. The clutch has a 'chomp' point, not a bite (it's so fucking sudden), so you need all the revs you can get otherwise it will simply just stall. My current car has hill hold, so hill starts aren't wearing on the clutch

Warming up tip was weird one. Even when it's at optimal 90 degrees, you still need to wait a bit for oil to warm up? What do you expect, people will heat their cars to 90 degrees before driving? Modern cars (with direct fuel injection) don't need long heating. It needs about 20 seconds for oil to start flowing through system and you're ready to go.

in heaven Fuel injection means you can start it up and piss off straight away, I just really mean you need to let it heat up before you step on it or rag it at all. you should have some oil temp for that.

Well, im not 100 percent sure, but you only need oil to start flowing through whole system, it will heat up while driving. My friend never really heated his car and he is still driving more than 100 km every day fine... Some manuals for cars suggest about 20 seconds of warming up.. Obviously if you start driving like madman and change gears at 6k rpm, your engine won't last long, but cold engine is fine operating at below 3k rpm

There are bushings under the shifter that aren't really designed for constant pressure

It's not going to cause massive wear, just slight wear over very long periods of time.

Lately my 07 Cobalt SS has been throwing P0833 Codes for failing clutch switch b. Ive tried changing the switch and still no resolution. I mean the car starts , But i have it in the shop right now because the cruise control doesn't work and it revs bad when i shift. All this happened, I think because of my prior driving habits, in bad traffic. Stop and Go.

Yea thats been in the back of my mind; although very rare occurrences should you ever really have to replace the entire electronic systemPc, so maybe a short in the fuse connectors or clutch switch connector IDk.

you know that the foot brake can hold your car on a hill too, you don't have to pull the handbrake when doing a hill start just brake with your foot.

You can do either, you'd want to use the handbrake if you're worried about rolling back at all though!

My Peugeot 206 xsi has 160000 miles on the clock and is still on the original clutch and it's still ok.

ADirtyPanda97 Your correct I've had the bearings replaced on the rear axle.Was a pig of a job but probably would have been easier just to buy a recon axle.

There is no problem with resting hand on the gear shift. you're not applying any force to the shift stick so you're not causing damage. it's just a false belief. you probably cause much more wear to the gears by shifting them (this is their normal wear).

The "hill start" is fucking bs!Here we need it as part of our driving test, some places have ridiculous hills every fucking where!The damage is not that big and it's not that expensive if you think about how long it takes to wear out.And keep both hands of the fucking wheel people!

Iv not long had to change my Gear Knob as the old one was worn out. Couldnt believe how heavy the Standerd Knob was compared to the new one i fitted.

It's the not weight on the shifter it's that your slightly pushing the shifter in either forward or backwards which wear the syncros

Devin Stambolziovski yeah, it's a costly repair, anything transmission related is expensive. I had 2 transmissions go in my 2006 Ford focus (5 speed manual), 1 went after less then 5000kms, not due to my driving however, the vehicle I drove for a living was a standard and i put tons of kms on it without issue. the transmissions I put in my focus were used, i believe I got bad garbage trannys... also front wheel drive cars where all those drivetrain component are all squished up in tight spaces, arent nearly as durable as an nice for example v8 engine with the crankshaft and transmission running parallel to the length of the car, with a nice thick drive shaft and solid real Axle + diff. very happy with my 2010 crown victoria. much more reliable.

old car needed to be warmed up couple minutes. know u just turn on car wait 30 seconds and just drive calm and u will see how u won't be choking your engine with so much fuel just waiting for it to warm up. just research that u will be surprised how wrong warming it up for like 10 to 15 minutes. in short terms your making the engine inject alot more gas just to meet optimal temperature to warm up.
