I keep my hot water tank on lowest point. 20-30 mins before shower I turn it up then turn it back down when done with shower. So other than a shower, it is on low. I only wash large loads of laundry and only with cold water. I hang dry my clothes on racks in front of vent in laundry area. I catch rain water to water plants. I use emergency plug in units in the pathway of the house. They stay on low like night lights, but when being a certain distance they come on brighter to light the way. Motion lights. I only use led bulbs that mimic about 20 watts of light in each room. I have a small light on kitchen counter I keep on all night that is 2 watts. I use power strips that have individual on and off switches for each outlet on the strip. Power is off when things are not in use. I use a small solar generator with solar panel that powers the 2 freezer chests in garage. I keep central air on 70 and use 8 inch fans angled upward in front of 4 vents so they circulate the air through my one floor square ranch house. I use lowest setting which is 13 watts. I use blackout curtains and drapes throughout the house to which ever side of the house the sun is on throughout the day. The drapes are only open to the shaded side of house to let in natural light so I use no lights in the daytime. I do all work, showers, cleaning during light hours so I am not using extra powered lights at night. I have 12 solar stake lights, I think 20 lumens...bright, in front and in back of house. They nicely light up property, especially in the winter for bright reflection off the snow. I also have various solar lights within the dogwood trees that line the back patio. Lol....there are tons of things to cut costs on everything. Research.... research....research...

I don’t have many vices. I don’t drink or smoke. But I do eat too many sweets. My general rule is I only eat homemade sweets. If I want something, I have to take the time and effort to make it. It’s an imperfect system, but it helps. And what I make is generally healthier then store bought.

I agree about wasting water. My husband leaves the water running when he brushes his teeth and while he’s washing his hands. Drives me crazy:) I also hate lights being left on when people are not in the room. I started using glass jars from grocery items to put sugar and other things in instead of plastic containers.

I live by myself so i have lots of free space in my refrigerator and freezer. I keep LOTS of one gallon milk jugs full of frozen water in both refrig and freezer. It prevents you from cooling “dead air” empty space. I just got a housemate. Im old enough to be her mother. She is a student at a local seminary. She is awesome! Extra $500 a month! I can wash my hair and wash my body in 6 minutes. I thouroughly rinse out every drop of soap, shampoo, hand soap, travel size samples, etc and put in in a the hand soap bottle i am currently using. Five years ago i was wearing high end makeup. Today, i have found recommended duplicates that i like BETTER. I decided i had to cut out salon visits to cover my gray hair. I found a clairol color (6g) for under $10 at walmart and now i cut my own hair ( i pull my hair high on my head with a pony tail holder and with sharp larger sewing scissors i lop off about 3 inches. I have never gotten so many compliments on my shoulder length layer hair that i smooth with the revlon smoothing brush. I unplug every electrical appliance i am not using…kitchen mixer, lamps, etc. the only things i leaved plugged in are the things too big to move like oven, washer, dryer….things like that. I am taking much better care of my belongings to make them look better and last longer. And mentally it helps my outlook. I am paying $25 with att for cell phone service. Soon i am going to try out mint mobile for $15 a month. You tuber Prepped Princess swears by mint mobile. I have a 36 hour a week job as a housemom for a maternity job, i teach sewing classes one night a week at a college, i volunteer at a hospital retail store just to gain some more usable skills and to get me around people because i am an introvert. I have discover walmart carries the best womens pajamas called Joyheart. They wash beautifully, the fabric is high quality with no see through, the styles at on point. And they actually run big so you can size down. I own very few clothes. Probably 4 “work” outfits that are professional and came from walmart. I wear them year round by layering them with a cardigan sweater and leggings for winter. Wear them alone when it gets hot. With me mixing and matching, i easily get over 100 wearing from each peice per 2 years. The two biggest money wasters for me are wasting food and allowing my weight to fluxuate rendering my wandrobe unusable and then i have to go buy more. Even if i shop at walmart, i am not being a good steward of my finances.

To clean glass jars fully after washing them I store them (without the lids of course) in the roasting tray in the oven when the tray is full (I would utilise other rungs as well if necessary) I turn on oven for a while to sterilise them, and when oven cools they are lidded for storage in cardboard wine boxes (with the cardboard inserts still in them) as dividers.

I buy the big containers of mixed nuts from BJ’s.. The nuts come in a plastic container with a screw on lid.. I reuse the plastic containers to store rice out of plastic bags, etc instead of buying plastic containers.. We use little of paper towels in our kitchen.. Only for bad messes.. Use a kitchen towel to dry out hands.. I only use 2-3 sheets of toilet paper- use as little as necessary.. Save cotton out of vitamin bottles and reuse..

I’m with you on the towels after a shower, I too have a hook on the door. I just cut out most sugar also, I love my chocolate but realized it was increasing the grocery budget. Stopped buying chips, substituted with pork rinds I get my crunchy snack with no carbs or sugar. I unplugged the items that are not used often, I was amazed at how much it reduced my electric bill.

Moment of transparency….I used to be pretty wasteful. I was so busy I didn’t take time out to look for areas where I could cut back. One game changer for me was making a menu for the week so I could trim the fat in my grocery list. I used to buy random food items at the grocery store anticipating what I “might cook.” I never paid much attention to it bc we have to eat so I might as well buy food but it was wasteful and my grocery bill has decreased considerably. We have to be more intentional with our spending especially in this economy.

No water left running. Hand washing, I bought one of those automatic soap dispenser that I followed with water instead of soap. Perfect to wet hands before washing them. I just turn on the water to rinse them. Tooth brushing, I fill up a glass. Shower, I do use a bucket to collect water while it's heating up. I use that water to hand-wash dishes, water plants... but I love my shower do if I turn off tap while soaping, I stay for "hour" while rinsing. I make my own vinaigrette/mustard sauces so no extra, tomato sauce is transferred in a glass jar. And I only use occasionally cornichons (French gherkins/pickles) which never last more than a few days. I store everything in glass jars, all recycled as I buy as many things in glass jars as possible. Save that money!

This tip was given to me by my plumber. I was sceptacle but in the last year that i have been doing this, it has always more than adequate to complete a flush. Big savings.

Suggestion: if you ever have something stuck to your refrigerator shelves again, place a wet paper towel or washcloth on the spots, forget about it for a while (10 minutes), then go wipe it up. No more struggle or scraping. Works on other surfaces as well. A lot of the things you mentioned, I am already doing. One bath towel, turn off the water, etc. I arrange my pantry, like things together, and try to use the things I already have. Cutting back on the sugar foods is excellent, fruit and yogurt are better snacks. Fresh fruit does not always stay fresh long enough, but many fruits come frozen, just take what you need and put the rest back in the freezer. I do veggies the same. I also bought those containers from Amazon with great expectations of being Pinterest worthy organized. But I don’t buy bulk items or things that I would need them for…. Most are sitting clean, on the top shelf empty. I hope you find them more useful. The ones I use, I cut the original package (instructions, exp date) and put it in the container. I don’t drink coffee or soda, water is my thing, but I do drink tea, one tea bag lasts all day, I just add more water, microwave it…. All is good. I really enjoy your channel and look forward to the new posts. I’m frugal and happy.

Back in the day, those 7/24/365 day housewives removed the parts and washed down the refrigerator interior once per week. This way you do work through the fridge but over the course of multiple weeks rather than each week. In a modern era, consider removing and washing individual drawers, shelves, and areas of the fridge once per week or every other week. For us, when say the condiments and cooking sauces start to take up too much refrigerator real estate, I begin to meal plan around using up some of the bottles, jars, and things. Back in the day, people also defrosted their freezers at least once per year, emptied their dry goods shelves and wiped them down once per year, and did a complete reorganizing of their dry goods shelves once every 6 months. In this process, many made extra effort to eat down the contents of their freezers and pantry shelves leading up these cleaning and organizing efforts; and put extra emphasis on eating through things discovered after the fact. Working towards some sort of a similar cadence helps keep one for finding items 5 years out of date in a back corner.

Make your own pesto by using half quantity olive oil and half water followed by spinach, choice of nuts (cashew or pine or brazil or a combination) with garlic, if desired. If stored in very small glass jars (former yoghart jars) in freezer it means a large jar is not left in fridge half used and then discarded.

Save the money - my fridge will always be pickle free, lol. I save the parmesan cheese containers for storing dried foods - like rice, oatmeal, etc. When the bag is getting almost empty fill the container and I can see how much I have left. I also live alone - so I dont go through food as much these days. Fresh grapes - buy a bunch when they are in season, then freeze them. SO GOOD! They are cold but not as hard as an ice cube.

Save that money! But also be careful of “expiration dates”. Many canned / jarred products are good YEARS beyond the date (mostly used for store inventory purposes) & it would be wasteful to throw it out. If it’s not bulging / smells funny, I use it. I also repackage stuff in Mylar bags, airtight containers, etc. for long-term (2-30 yrs) storage. Use O2 absorbers or silica packets, depending on what it is. If fruit is starting to go bad I either dehydrate it or freeze it to put in smoothies. LOTS of ways to ensure you’re getting the most from your grocery budget & not wasting anything. 😊

The large economy size isn't good anymore because I can't use them up before they go bad. I really have to go through my pantry to see what I have that needs to be used.

Great tips. Small changes can add up over time to significant savings. I’ve been cleaning 1 pantry shelf a day (I have a large pantry). I found soooo much pasta. I have enough to last months. I’m going to check out using clear containers for that instead of stuffing bags into a box where I can’t easily see what I have. I need to clean my frig too. It’s amazing what you find when you do that. Not just expired condiments but produce so old it’s become a science experiment. So gross 🤢. We had to buy a new refrigerator in 2020, we intentionally chose a smaller size so we couldn’t fill it up with so much stuff that ends up being wasted.

By batch cooking one pot meals one saves the cost of energy. I freeze portions in glass (jam jars) as I don't like using plastic. NEVER fill jar to the top as liquids expand slightly in the freezing process. Plan meals ahead of time and TAKE OUT JAR overnight to naturally defrost.

One towel all week, yes. Wearing clothes then putting them away if not dirty, yes. Pantry clean out coming as soon as my adult daughter and her family moves out. Turning off lights and TV, yes. Curbing a vice, working on it!!

Something that helped me is, The Rule of Energy.” Everything requires energy, how can I be more efficient and effective in my energy usage . I like certain brands of toilet paper. Though it costs more than Scott, I ration it out. I use 3-4 squares for pee and 4-5 for no.2. I know tmi, but every thing needs to be assessed and reassessed. I reuse plastic baggies as much as is safely possible. Having a capsule wardrobe for clothes. I have clothes that used to be fine for going out into the world that are now my clothes for inside the house, when that no longer works, they become rags. I have dress sneakers, home sneakers and yard work sneakers. I keep a clean towel near the dryer and add it to the dryer to dry my clothes faster and for less energy, yes, I could hang dry my laundry but that’s not feasible for me. When the dryer is done, l take out the towel first and fold it to leave near the dryer for the next load. Then I remove the clothes. When I bought my washer, I got a front loader to cut down on water, electricity and laundry detergent. It also takes less time and energy to dry clothes after using a front loader. I got my washer/dryer on a deep sale, used coupons, store discounts (military 10%), discounted gift cards (also got credit card points for buying the gift cards) and (2 rebates - electric co. for buying a high efficiency washer & Rakuten type) rebates. This took the price below what I would pay for a cheap top loader washer. I also used Consumer Reports information about reliability, effectiveness, etc. Because I bought new I had a one year warranty, also. I also bought off Craigslist a group of used kitchen appliances for $250 that were one year old. They bought the house and bought new appliances and then decided to redo the complete kitchen. Those appliance were in great condition and lasted 10+ years. Now this just the way I think but it definitely wasn’t n the beginning of my frugal journey.

I store unwashed berries in mason jars ...depending on the berries they last from 1 - 3 weeks (use raspberry frist ...blueberries last longest). I just started making my own oat milk ...so quick, easy & cheap plus I can add a spice pike cinnamon if I like. With the leftover oat pulp I add a bit if honey and yoghurt and have an amazing body scrub/wash.

This thing about laundry, Kate. When you take off something but know you can wear it again, I fold these things and keep them all together in the same spot. Any time I'm just hanging out at home and don't need to be wearing something freshly washed and beautifully ironed, I'll put clothes on from that pile as first choice. It's not just about saving energy and washing powder/liquid, it's all about saving on the hated job of ironing.(I bet you know what I'm talking about, LOL!) [SAVE THAT MONEY!!!] Kiki? How did that happen/how did I miss this? Last I heard they were Spooky and Ghost! I'm with you on the water use - exactly the same with brushing teeth but enjoying the warm water on my shoulders and head when I'm showering. I once read an article which said the UN or WHO (I forget which) have predicted that World War III (which I hope never happens) will be fought over access to water. I think we have to treat it like it's as precious as energy or gas/petrol. Wishing you and Kaden a brilliant weekend - sorry I couldn't get to watch this during the first hour after it launched. Better later than never, eh? Such a good budget video when was it? Was it last night? I think it was! I really enjoy your lives and teaming up with T&C seems like a smart move to me on your part. 😀

Save that money! I feel like I am starting to be my dad - 'we turn off lights when we leave the room'. We are also on well water, so we only run water when absolutely needed (not leave it running as we are washing dishes or brushing teeth, etc.). Love all your tips!!

We are on a well also and often have people ask me why I don't let the water run while doing dishes and etc. because I don't have a water bill. Some people don't realize the more water you use having a well the more the pressure tank kicks on which means electricity is used and more times I have to buy water filters which aren't cheap. We live in a area that has very hard water so must have water filters
