My trainer told me that whenever I pick up a trailer, I should mark the whole damn thing as "dented" and "scratched." That saved me a few times. "No, that dent was already there when I picked it up..."

I usually set the cruise around 62, but have the ability to step up to 70 - 75 if needed to pass or get out of a situation. At 62, I get better mileage, plus it makes it easier to stop in a hurry or make an unexpected swerve. In a 1000 mile trip, the difference between driving 62 or 70 is 1.84 hours. You can waste that much time getting coffee or bathroom breaks.

Love this advice! Yesterday, a four wheeler went off the road. A driver told us on the radio, another said "In not sure how, the roads are fine! I havent even taken off my cruise control!"... The roads were barely dusted white and it was -3°c. Assuming the roads were fine was possibly the last thing that driver assumed before hitting an icy corner! If you are going to assume anything, then assume they are NOT fine! It may save a life!! Driving fast in poor road conditions does not make you a better driver... knowing you shouldn't and slowing down does!

I've always been a Cruise Control type of driver, and I second everything mentioned... Especially using on dry roads. One thing that was mentioned is going slightly slower than the speed limit. That's just good driving in general, and it works. I usually use "Flow of traffic" when explaining it, but it's the same thing. There are always people cutting close, and the only way to maintain any kind of reasonable following distance is to make sure that the car in front is always pulling away from me. Not only does that help maintain following distance, but doing that also takes some of the stress out of driving. That's a nice little side effect. Thanks for the video.

Another thing drivers need to understand, semi truck tires are only speed rated to 75 miles per hour. This means the manufacturer can only guarantee the tire safety to 75 miles per hour.

Cruise Control reduces the drivers workload, it allows the driver to focus on keeping the truck between the lines and looking ahead without constantly looking down at the speedometer. I drive a Volvo that also auto decelerate/brakes so I can set the cruise to 1 mph below the speed limit and the target braking to 1 mph above the speed limit and rarely have to think about speed management, even on hills, great system! New drivers speed, experienced drivers don’t and make more money, go figure.

I worked for a bug hauler in 95, the same guy who had the mail runs. He was a sleazeball of all sleazeballs. He had a warehouse so storage was a big part of his business, but if he saw some stuff he liked he'd stop sending bills to the customer hoping they'd forget to pay at which time he'd own the furniture. One customer had some high end wicker furniture which he sold and when they claimed on the insurance they found out he paid the claim by the pound. He ended up paying about 2 cents on the dollar for new furniture he sold at almost new price. In the late 60s the company I was working for, a steel hauler, had squealers (Tachograph) in all his trucks but he had given up using them because guys would spill coke on them and it would cost him to have them repaired. When I asked him for some cards for the one in my truck he was surprised, until I explained that they were admissible as evidence in court. I agree with you about speed controllers being a bad idea. People who have never been in a truck and have no idea what works and what doesn't is always a bad idea, as bad as people who never shoot a gun and don't like guns making laws about them.
@SmartTrucking
@SmartTrucking 6 жыл бұрын
I probably shouldn't admit to this, but we used to blow a little cement powder in our tachographs and there'd be enough moisture in the air that it would eventually gum up the tach and make it read low, or not at all. Dave

The company I'm talking about had one White with a 220 Cummins and a ten speed that I was driving one evening when I took my then wife for a ride, Hamilton to Richmond Hill. We used to have to go out the west end of the city because my boss refused to pay the toll on the Skyway bridge. From York boulevard to Guelph line was uphill all the way so getting to high gear with a full load often took that whole distance. I had just hit high gear when I got pulled over by Markel and his first question was "do you know how fast you were going. I told him the speedo said 53 mph to which he made a face. "Try again" he said. I told him the squealer agreed with the speedo and that was the truth. He got a bit angry and said "when you passed that Greyhound in the showoff lane you must have figured you were going faster than 53. I asked him how fast I was going according to him and he told me 76 mph. The next day I told my boss because I was sure he would find out unless he already knew and he said that he was sorry he didn't give me a heads up and that that truck had been clocked by radar at 98 miles per hour. I know it sounds kind of bullshitty that a 220 Cummins can do that bub Bob was not given to bullshit.

I was able to control the 4 wheeler but a valuable Lesson learned. 32 years with a clean drivers abstract. Experience is a good teacher. Don't over-rely on the features in your vehicle and lose engagement.

I’ve heard more than a few drivers say that they believed these trucks governed at 65 or whatever the company deems is a safe speed for their trucks are death traps. I can’t say I fully understand why they say it but they do. I suppose it could be because at a speed limit that a particular state says is safe for their roads the trucks can’t even do it anyway and somebody always fills the gap they keep between cars or makes some kind of radical movements in front of the truck cause we are moving slower than the other traffic. Who knows? I drive slow and I work slow and try to keep as much room as I can from other cars. So far it’s served me pretty well.

The European trucks that I drive here in New Zealand have both Cruise Control and a driver set Speed Limiter. I use the Cruise Control on the open road set just below the speed limit and set the Speed Limiter for in town and construction zones. Nice weather means road construction season. My company truck is 62 on the floor and and 66 with cruise. So even if not using cruise I will turn it on just so have that extra to pass with, Pretty bad now because most large carriers are governing at 65 so creates real issues with passing. My truck has a bendix sensor on the front so can not tailgate or records.

Hello, Im an international trucker in Europe and here in Europe, all truck have speed limit (90km). We have a chaotic truck traffic in Europe, accidents every day, idle we didn't have the speed limiter, companies would pressure truck drivers to speed up to get faster to the client. Here in Europe wouldn't be a good thing not having a speed limiter

About gaining time; driving through Germany You may drive fast lane 140 kmh (ca 95mph), but that craves many coffee-rests. If You find a truck going 65-70 mph (100kmh) You may just follow it, but take fewer stops. I tried both ways, result was ca 10-11 hours on the same distance. There´s sometime a 3rd quick lane, but don´t use it. The Porsches and else will be close to crash Your car´s behind.

My experience as a mere four wheeler has taught me these same lessons; cruise is for dry pavement only, and if one has to interrupt the cruise control, one should turn the switch off rather than stomp the brake. However, I'm not your average four wheeler: I drive defensively and I can drive 3000 miles in a day. That's why I am considering getting in the saddle of an 18 wheeler.

I've had cruise control on my truck since 1990. Just like you Dave I drive about 3mph UNDER posted speed limit 4 the EXACT reasons you specified. 4 wheelers are ALWAYS speeding. I prefer having the fools way out in front rather than up my butt+ cops (good cops that is) can nab the speeders. Plus cops are *usually fishing when they ask "do you know how fast you were driving sir?"* Most ppl will admit guilt to cops. I *won't admit ANY guilt as it's my 5thA RIGHT.* I was stopped this way 23yr ago. "Yup had my cruise set 3mph UNDER" & cop turned & walked back to his car and THAT was THAT...

As a truck driver, I never use cruise, because I think it's so much safer to drive with it off. When you drive a heavy big rig (semi) (especially if you have a heavy load) you don't want to take unnecessary chances of something going wrong, such as falling asleep at the wheel, or other unforeseen event. I don't even use the one in my car.

I drive a glider truck logging a 2015 t800 Kenworth 550 caterpillar 2050 torque will top out around 100 miles per hour but I rarely drive over the speed limit by very much it's just nice knowing you to have this nice knowing you have it in case you need it. I drive slower in the rain especially on the interstate or in high traffic. I was a former over-the-road truck driver for a few years and we had speed limited trucks would run 62 miles per hour with your foot on the floor I don't agree with speed limited trucks under 76 miles an hour.

When I'm in my car I rarely ever use cruise control. I have a 60km commute (60km to work and 60km home) and a lot of that is highway but for some reason I almost forget I have cruise control and just use my foot. When I'm driving at work, I only use cruise control on highway or wide roads. The road might be 2-lane but if each lane is only 3 meters I'm keeping it switched off. No, our trucks are limited to 90km/h (55mph), but they're usually 24 meters long (18 meters if they're semis, but with link they can be 25 meters), 2.5 meters wide not counting the mirrors, 4.5 meters high (4.0 if they're not Swedish or Finnish) and can weigh up to 64 tons or 140 000lbs. Semi trucks with a single rear axle can weigh up to 40 tons while with double rear axle they can weigh up to 44 tons. Container chassis (trailers for containers) usually have their rear axles further back and the trucks that haul these are usually slightly extended as well, so those can generally weigh up to 50 tons. At least my could when I drove those combinations.

I have to agree with you when it comes to governing speed. Especially governing below the posted speed limits. Not only does it make it hard to safley get around the slow movers like motorhomes doing 20km/h below the speed limit, it makes the truck a moving road hazard. 4-wheelers are a big enough issue on multi-lane highways doing the speeds they go. But get them on a narrow 2 lane road like the ones I run up and down in northern British Columbia it gets extreamly dangerous. They end up getting trapped behind a governed trucks who are governed to 90km/h when the limit is 100/110km/h and they are unable to pass in the safe zones they start doing stupid things and passing on double solids blind corners. I also think automatics are a plauge in the trucking industry. Can't count how meny trucks in the winter have spun out on hills that my 18speed has no problem bare footing up, all because the computer decided to drop 2 full gears when a half would have done. keep up the great videos dave!

Northern indiana here, I only use cruise control in the months without an R in them. Risk of ice with all R months. Just snowed last week.

I’ve got the old school cruise: pull the hand throttle out about half way in the big hole. My truck will only run about 68 anyway.

I'm not a trucker, but was wondering what you truck drivers think about new trucks and adaptive cruise control that automatically speeds up and slows down to maintain the following distance. I would think it would be awesome to have on interstate driving.

4 wheelers need to learn too, the faster you drive, the quicker things happen. I always drove a couple mph slower than traffic, they would always be moving away from me. Easier to keep that safety zone.

I kinda veered off the topic for this video, anyway, I play a game called American Truck Simulator where the PC disc will allow you to plat it like a game, it will let you combine a mouse and keyboard, or if your a serious gamer with a lot of money will let you attach a kit for I think is $300.00 that includes a steering wheel a clutch and brake pedal, and a shifter and will let you drive like a real truck! , My friend has it on a 50 inch flatscreen and it looks like your in the truck, so I triedi it out an was doing ok then my friend said miss a gear and look what it does so I did it gave me a grinding sound and the shifter shook I am guessing it was a force feedback shifter, good practice but I do not play it enough to get that kit now, this game has 3 ways to park a trailer, Artificial Intelligence traffic pick up and drop off points, weather like rain, random road events, construction site traffic detours,and roads being worked on with construction lights.

My 2020 Freightliner Cascadia has a "governor" at 75 mph, which is fast enough in Virginia........where our highest posted speed limit is 70 mph.

Also cruise control can also put you into a slide in bad weather on a curve.

I and other operators wonder why cruise will pull harder than the pedal. Nothing sucks more than speed limiters. The frustration of not being able to get to a certain speed is very dangerous.
