5 Things We Do In The Netherlands We Would Never Do In The States! When Tammy and I moved to the Netherlands from the US we knew we were in for some changes! From safety in the Netherlands to food/grocery delivery in the Netherlands and everything in between. So here is our list of 5 things (really 6) we do here in the Netherlands that living in Southern California we would never do.

Here is another thing you would never do in the US. Uitwaaien. It is so Dutch. Hard to explain, but it is going to the beach for a walk in the Fall/ Winter usually, when there is a good wind. You would never expect anyone to be on the beach at that time, but surprise! Walk along the shore with the wind whipping around, incredibly refreshing. Ask you Dutch friends.

Traditionally (like in Italian restaurants), pizzas are not served pre-cut. The pre-cutting was introduced when pizzas became more of a fast food thing, starting in the US (obviously... 🙂).

Just gotta get a pizza roller to slice it! I use it all the time. Most of the pizza places dont cut your pizza only the American kind of places like dominios or new york pizza. Enjoy the pizza's Eric and Tammy 🎉 my favorite is still the pizza Hawaii 🍕🍕 🍍🍍 but with salami with it.

Wondering why your pizza gets delivered not pre-cut shows that you look at this with an American perspective. Pizza is an Italian dish, not an American dish ;-) So instead you should look at how a pizza is served/delivered originally (In Italy).

About the pizza's being uncut: It really depends on where you order it from if they pre cut it or not; You can always request it though in the comments. The thing is with certain pizza's, usually authentic Italian pizza's, if they pre cut it and then deliver it by bike or scooter, the toppings of the pizza can move around more easily, resulting in a messed up pizza when it arrives. You can buy special pizza cutters which is a round rotating blade on a handle; Even Albert Heijn sells those for a couple bucks.

Thank you for your adorable videos! My wife (American-Swedish) and I (Dutch-Swedish) love to watch your videos and she will look at me and say: "See?! I'm not the only one who finds this weird!" :) But today I laughed about the pre-cut pizzas. Never had a pre-cut pizza in the NL and not here in Sweden either, unless you go to an "American pizza place". Here, you only cut other people's food if they are children or very very old. :) I mean: people do have a knife at home, right? Or a pizza cutter? Or - like our friends- a special pair of scissors that is ONLY to be used for cutting pizza. 😂 Keep up the good work with the videos! We love them.

Love the vlog! I have no idea why it's so satisfying to hear people from "the promised land"' point out all the merits of our little country. Seems to me many Dutch people like that. I love visiting the States, there are so many great parks and things to see, but returning home is great. Anyway, on the "going out in the rain thing" I just needed to repeat a saying that you most probably heard many times but just for the odd reader that hasn't: we say "you are not made of sugar". If you catch some rain, you will not melt. We are not too happy about it, it's inconvenient to get soaking wet, if you cycle to work in the morning and you'd have to spent a long time walking in wet clothes it's not optimal, but nothing a good rain suit won't prevent. Did you ever witness that scene when it starts raining all of a sudden many bicycle riders will stop under a bridge or overhang, start digging into their "fietstas" to find the rain suite? See them dancing around, trying to balance when putting on those slightly tight over-pants. Very fashionable 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂

Hello Tammi & Eric. Another great video. Weather: here in the UK, we are supposedly living under a blanket of rain according to US folklore In the UK there was a grand gentleman, now unfortunately deceased Alfred Wainright, who wrote loads of footpath guides and books for the Lake District, he always said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”. it's normal not to have your pizza pre-sliced here. Most people here have a pizza slicer in their kitchen and do it themselves. That way you can have the slices any size you want. Also, the pizza arrives in better shape if it's not sliced in the box. A whole pizza just slides around the box but doesn't really make a mess like it could if it's pre-sliced.

That's what we do! It's gonna rain? We still go out. Het stopt vanzelf een keer (it stops by itself sometime). We live by this saying: "Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain." And the Dutch are professional 'rain dancers' 😂

Italians in general don't like cutting their pizza in points, they eat it with fork and knife (in restaurants) unless there is a street vendor, then it may be different.
@sorenlilienthal1368

Exactly! Americans are used to eat pizza directly from the box, cut into sixths and just with their hands. (Most) Europeans shift it to a plate and eat it with knife and fork. Sometimes we cut it into radial segments too and eat it with our fingers, but not always. 😎 With the festivals in the Netherlands, it's of course a fact, that the country is 1. somewhat smaller than California and 2. has a good public transport system, that makes it easy to get anywhere, as you have observed several times. There's a difference between a 2 to 3 hour car ride (not uncommon in the U.S.) and a 30 minutes train ride. Greetings from Berlin/Germany!

By default if you order pizza from an American fast food chain (Domino, Papa John, New York Pizza) they will be sliced, though when it's very busy they sometimes do forget or you get very irregular size pieces. If you order from an Italian restaurant the pizza will not be sliced, which is the same as how they serve it in the restaurant itself.

I assume the pizzas you ordered weren't of the Calzone type ;o). In the past I only ordered pizza from an Italian pizza place (usually went to pick it up). Uncut as I wanted it. When you cut the pizza and then get it delivered, it's usually a lot colder and the box is a total mess. Just have a pizza cutter in the house, or use a standard knife or whatever. Only ever had "American style" pizzas at the work place, and they were always floating in the box, especially the New York Pizza ones were famous for that.

When you talked about the pizza’s I can understand it’s different . About 28 years ago we visited Miami Florida. When looking for a place to eat we saw this pizzeria but the price of a pizza was huge. But it was the only restaurant we liked so we went back and ordered 2 pizza’s. The waiter said: are you sure 2 pizza’s??? They are very big. He even showed us the tray it was served on, but that was just the size of the pizza’s we’re used to in the Netherlands. Finally he gave up and we got our 2 pizza’s. Cut in pieces, something that surprised us. And they were huge! Not in diameter but at least 7 cm thick. When we looked around us we saw whole families with 1 pizza on the table. We ate 1 pizza and almost exploded. And 1 piece of the second one. Just because we were too stubborn to admit the waiter was right. Pizza culture is very different indeed😅

Yes swap the red bull for Aldi golden power. Way more affordable and one of the two best tasting energy drinks. Lidl being the other one. I used to have to live on a tight budget. Now I don't need to do that anymore but I like having extra money and the food on a budget is just as good. Go to the market when they set up or break down. Buy the slightly damaged fruit for next to nothing. Getting money is better then dumping it so great deal to be had. Now cut up the fruit and put in freezer. Put frozen fruit in blender with some milk and you get a great and healthy milkshake on a budget. Want more tips? ... Another advantage is that inflation hits me less hard because I spend way less. Percentages are crazy like that

A lot of supermarkets have a space/cooler where they discount products who are about to go over the (arbitrary) max date of sale. Go early and get inspired for dinner. In cities with a hotel or culinary school they have restaurants where they train and use special prices for customers who come to eat (and thus help with training (no dear I am not cheap, I am proud to help educate 😛)) Same goes for hairdressers schools too. If you pay attention you can live like royalty on a limited budget. If I think of more I will add, eating right now. Baked potatoes (0,50€) carrots (0,50€) and meatballs (2,50€) to feed three person's. 😁 Also if you want some different content.. go to a food bank, the salvation army, or a kringloop. I find it inspiring to see how people help each other. What a lot of people don't know is that the salvation army has a department that helps people reintegrate when they come out of prison. A friend used to do that work. He wasn't a Christian, that used to be required before (grandma was a salvation soldier, so I know they were much more strict in that sense)

Hi there Tammy and Eric! Another great video absolutely pinpointing why the quality of life here in the Netherlands is so good. The Dutch way of life is laid back, "doe maar gewoon". Zooming in on your question about the pizza, most delivery sites will have the pizza cut in 8. However, to be sure, just ask for it (or get a pizza wheel 😆). I like the observation, "when the sun comes out, the Dutch come out". Maybe it doesn't rain that often (OK, forget July), but we have tons of weary gray overcast days. So when the sun does shine, we enjoy every moment. Before I forget, picknicking. Having been to the US many, many times, we have seen plenty of occasions where Americans went to State parks, and enjoy a family bbq outside. My family in Minnesota does it every summer. Safety, another item where NL scores so much better than the USA. Main difference: total lunacy on guns.

Just love ❤ it how you guys embrace the Dutch and European culture! That's how you really get to know the place you're at. I did so when I lived in the States and loved my time there (long time ago 😊). Alles heeft z'n charmes. Keep up learning Dutch! You're doing great already. By the way: have you been to the Zuiderzeemuseum yet? It's a must.

Pizza slicing depends on the company AND how it’a delivered. For instance there’s a company that uses smalll cars, then it’s surely cut, but when they use a bike then it’s semi-cut for obvious reasons. Some sites have the option how you want to have it sliced, but almost all sites you ask it in the remark or extra or special wishes note part. So by that being said, it’s up to you !!

I've read somewhere that while England is know for the rain, it rains more in the Netherlands. The frequency is higher in the UK and the amount is higher in the Netherlands.

Pleased to hear you got your cards! Congratulations 🎉 Pizzas are almost never cut far as I know, only dominos does it and New York pizza (badly cuts) For the rest I’ll take my cutter and do it myself. Nice to hear that you feel safe here. ❣️

Eric & Tammy, on a slightly different note… Your videos are funny and well done. I especially applaud your efforts in trying that impossible language called Dutch! I make my way back to the NL from the USA at least once per year, and even for me as a native speaker, it takes a little bit to catch up on the language. 👍🏼

A lot of what would be called finger food in the States is eaten with fork and knife here, some even thinking it rude if you don't. Do you think this may be another reason for not slicing up pizza beforehand?

It's so funny you mention the picnic in the parc! I moved from a little village in the middle of the Netherlands to a Rotterdam and the picnicking in the parc is really a city thing 😂 I think it's because you cannot bbq on your balcony and not a lot of people have a garden to picnic in when you live in a city... so this appears to be a city culture 😊

Rain in The Netherlands can last for weeks, or for 5 minutes, so you will have to go out when it's raining at some point. That's why everybody here follows the weather reports so closely, and why we are so obsessed with the weather: it can literally change in an hour from very sunny and warm to very rainy and cold... edit: also, on the cut pizza: some restaurants do this, but not all of them. I would recommend just having a pizza cutter in your kitchen drawers, just in case.

Thanks for the additions! Hence 'generally'. 😉 Though I had oliebollen in Alkmaar in April this year. If I remember correctly, I got them at one of those 'Oud-Hollandsche Gebakkramen' (traditional Dutch pastry vendors, for those interested). I realize Alkmaar's city centre is just outside of the West Friesland region, please don't get upset with me. 😉

Pizza delivery / take aways in my neighbourhood on the southside of Rotterdam seem to slice them but they aren't distinct slices as I usually have to slice them again. Also, re the rain. Seems you two aren't made of sugar anymore huh?

When I lived in Colorado for a year I started missing the rain. I always really disliked rain when I had to bike somewhere. Sticky pants. But rain refreshes. Dust disappeared. The plants and grasses become green again. And the fresh smell outside. Love it.

It depends on where you order: should you order at a Domino's for example then it'll come pre-sliced. Order at an Italian restaurant, it most likely will not be pre-sliced.
