Planting papaya is a circle of 6ft diameter works well. you can have 4-5 plants in that circle. in center of circle have a pit of 3ft diameter n 3ft depth and fill it with organic material to decompose, this will act as source of fertilizer for the plants. in the understorey once can grow ginger, turmeric, taro. In the same way one can have banana circle, just that one has to manage the new pups by transplanting.

You can prune the top to stop the growth and have short fruit producing trees. I've done this many times.

Yes you can, but the trunks are hallow so you need to put something over it so water doesn’t collect in there. In my opinion it’s better just to start a new one but if it’s working for you that’s great! 😊

Cut paw paw plant back and place empty can on top of stump. Tree will regrowth. Also bury a small chunk of concret/broken brick in with the plant for the lime.

Most important for papayas is to have great drainage. Papaya quickly gets root rot in wet soil

@@M3LTUP If temp of soil drops below 50F and soil is soggy - papaya dies within 48 hours. Out here in California, a lot of people lose their papayas in winter when they plant them in native clay soil. Cactus mix works very well for papays in a container. I grow them on old compost piles or mounds.

Mine use to grow like Crazy when I lived in Lower Louisiana --- I buried left-over Fish Parts in holes about 2 feet away from the Trunk, they loved that -- I did nothing more cause we got plenty of rain where i lived. Nothing but H20 and Fish left-overs.....

😄 you may have to water them if you have an extended drought. Lots of mulch covering the soil will help tremendously. We had one drought that lasted two months last year and everything survived without watering.

We get drinking water from the local spring, and collect rain water for showers and washing dishes. Same solar set although we are thinking about upgrading soon so we can run a freezer. Thanks for the comment 😊

Thanks for another great video! I have a concern and am wondering if you can shed any light. I am planning on moving over in April 2020. I stay with a friend in HPP when I visit and Papayas appear to ben in abundance there. His are on very tall trees but uses a picker to grab them and twist them off. I have looked for property between HPP and Fern Acres. It appears there is an elevation line that Papayas (and many other plants I want to grow) stop growing. I did not notice any Papayas on any of the properties I looked at in the higher elevation. Does that sound right to you? Please forgive my ignorance but I am just learning. Do you know your elevation? I have tried to find information online about what grows where but have not found anything specific as of yet. Again, thanks for all your videos. They are all so informative and entertaining at the same time. You two are adorable together.

The general rule here is that you can grow just about anything in this area under 1000ft. with the exception of a few things. That being said all of the same things including papaya may still grow above 1000ft but maybe not as good. The higher up the worse it gets. I don’t have an exact cut off point as to where they stop growing and it even gets more complicated with different microclimates, but I hope this somewhat answers your question. 😊

Your Both very funny. My friend is growing in Florida to sale she told me to only use the bottom seeds of a papaya and scrape them into water what floating is no hood so take out then lay out and take a gray seed's to plant and toss the rest. After she waits tell leaf she digs and cuts maine root back and plants two together for support but she is growing short tree's . Have you done this and is she right? It was easy for me to mango by taking out of shell and plant. I planted pineapple guava and i have three years left tell fruit. As i so need to eat and wash my hair to keep.

😃 if we showed the whole orchard the video would be two hours long lol. These days the chickens are doing all the composting we just throw everything in their cage and they take care of it. We only had pig damage one night since the first episode. I think the dog scared it away cause it never came back.

It’s a deep mulch system so the finished compost goes to the bottom. Still experimenting with it but seems to be working good so far.

it's said that when you pull the young plants (4-5 inches tall) from dirt, if it has a long root stock, as opposed to a root bundle, it's a male, and do not replant it.

The soil in my yard is not very fertile, so what kind of fertilizer should i use to grow big papayas, besides using chicken manure which is quite expensive in my area - should i use general purpose fertilizer 16-16-16?

Hi Mike, this may be a late reply but an alternative is cow/horse/steer manure will also work. The biggest thing you can do for papaya is mulch heavily with organic matter (grass, bark, wood chips, leaves) as it breaks down it’ll make your soil fertile without the need for fertilizer. Also make sure the roots gets good drainage because their roots rots easily. Good luck!

I love you two, you're so AWESOME, thank you very much for the tips on the Papayas, I have a large one, about 5 feet tall, but it desperately need a bigger pot or planted in the ground, the only thing a neighbor told me was to water it very much, now thanks to you guys I know a bit more and a second Papaya sprouted, but its a baby barely 12 inches tall. I chopped my papaya and it grew back, was shorter and I can reach the fruit. I plant the seeds in pots and grow them over the winter in my enclosed porch. Springtime I plant out and they have time to fruit here in central Florida. The roots grow massive in the ground. I'm hoping when they die off this winter the roots rot and feed the soil. Hey Michael and Paulina, When my wife and I lived on the Big Island, we grew papayas and I did something that you didn't mention. To keep my papaya trees from getting too high and hard to pick the fruits, I used to cut off the tops and let them side branch. I would cover the cut part with a coffee can to keep the tree from rotting. Have you guys tried this?

Perhaps you should consider growing the red lady or Dwarf Waimanalo varieties. Both have very low growing fruit. Seeds are inexpensive at ebay.

No idea, we never buy them at the supermarket. Farmers markets sometimes sell them 3-5 for $5 depending on size and variety. They’re one of the cheaper fruits found for sale and they’re always in season.

We go by smell and feel. If it smells very sweet and is squishy and turning dark then we pick it. We're still learning as we go but so far this seems to be the best way to know. We've picked some too early and it was sad. We picked one that had turned black and was cracked open and it tasted the best!

I highly highly recommend ordering seeds from aloha seed...the genetics are incredible and you wont waste time with questionable genetics from fruit. We have dwarf trees with monster fruits.

The cassava and taro I usually mash and the sweet potato I like to cut them Small and cook with a little olive oil. As for not being fruitarian I guess the short answer is it worked for us in many ways but not in every way.

Have you seen Mcdougal lately? He has lost his mind! I wouldn’t listen to anything that guy says. Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much about why it didn’t work out for us because it was different for both of us, meaning it might be different for you or anyone else. The important thing is you listening to your own body and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t just keep blindly following that path. For both of us it was health concerns though, if that helps any.

Urine is an excellent fertilizer for papaya. Also, plant beans or peas at the base to climb the stem of the papaya, and to add nitrogen to the soil.

Urine and other high nitrogen products are good but I have found that they need the other macros as well P&K

@@OffGridHawaii urine is a complete fertilizer with all three components, when it's diluted. You can always mix it with ash to increase potassium. My papayas thrive on mulch and urine with very little else, in horrible baren clay.

The ratio of urine is generally 11:2:4 so way high on the N. Papaya prefer a more even ratio. So by adding the mulch you are evening out the ratio because mulch is high in P&K. Mulch plus urine is great 👍🏽 👍🏽

@@OffGridHawaii exactly. Mulch makes a big difference. But only urine is extremely good for papaya too. Not sure if you've tried it, but I would encourage you to do so. Our papaya fertilized with only diluted urine (no mulch at that time) were nearly 10x larger and considerably greener and more resilient to drought, than their siblings that did not receive the urine (but received everything else the same.

@@OffGridHawaii so good! They go great with finely sliced banana flower hearts and kangkung. All stir fried in a flavour paste of chilli, plenty of garlic and a few candle nuts, along with a few lemongrass stalks and kaffir lime leaves 😙👌

Have you thought of pruning them. Top them off so to speak. The trunks will get thicker. And keeping it topped off it, will still grow but stay at a shorter height , so you can reach the fruit easier. A shorter papaya tree is not unheard of. It will make for a stronger tree.

We did get one comment earlier saying to do just that. I guess my only concern is that the fruits might not get as big but I’d be willing to experiment. 🤙🏽

I don't know if it's your papaya breed, but it seems like not enough sun (?) because it's growing tall and leaves are far apart.

easily the hardest plant ive ever tried to grow in my cool climate they just fall over with base rot, argh lol p.s. how do you guys feel about having to take b12 supplements? i hate iiiiit waaaaaaah! lol

It can be, but we only tend to pee on the ones close by. They also really need the lots of rich soil and mulch.

Apparently I was wrong on the pruning. Apparently because they don’t grow lateral branches, papayas don’t take to pruning. What was suggested was grafting. In the case of needing a dwarf papaya. See MIgardener channel on this. Sorry I gave bad advice.
