I've had border collies my whole life and my current girl is 22 months. While it's true that they need/like lots of exercise, a big mistake that border collie owners can make is to give them too much exercise. You just end up with an over-tired, restless dog. The goal shouldn't be to tire them out physically; it should be to keep their brains busy.

This is our 3"rd Border Collie. The breeder told us she was the quietest in the litter, I said good, as my wife and I are retired and I know what they can be like. My first dog, both her parents were registered working dogs, she never slowed down. Anyway's Molly is content, being where ever we are. If we're outside, she wants out, if we"re inside, she has to be in. We let her run loose outside, she never strays off our property. She'll guard the ducks in the pond, and chases off a Blue Heron we have eating our fish She has tons of rubber toys in the house, but when asked, she'll put them all away in her toy box, for a treat of course, lil.. Molly is 19 months old now, we couldn't have asked for a better dog and she"ll let us know if she hears something strange going on outside too. She lives car rides. She"s part of our family.

@@sunayanamukherjee1653sure! I don't know what info I can provide, except I always reward Molly with treats. They're eager to learn and smart and love their treats. I've been buying pumpkin/chia. We've always let her know when she's bad too. We've never laid a hand on her, but did threaten her with a fly swatter once when she went out on the road. All I have to say is Fly Swatter now and she's as good as gold lol. I think she's observed me swatting a few around the house and the noise scares her lol.

Just lost my cross border collie 14/01/2023 at the grand age of 15 years old, it hit me so hard because his companionship was my rock every ticking hour we shared together. My old Collie Sonny passed away on the 26th of November 2016 and not a day passes without me thinking of him. Anytime I ever returned home to an empty house and was feeling sad or lonely he was there at the front door waiting for me and those feelings just evaporated immediately. I waited for about 18 months before getting a new dog and unsurprisingly I got another collie. He's called Sammy, and although they're almost identical in looks their personalities are totally different which is great 'cos I didn't want to feel like I was replacing Sonny. Sammy is more sensitive where as Sonny was an absolute alpha. Best breed ever created in my opinion and as far as I'm concerned it's not even open for debate. The dog lover's dog.

We adopted our border collie from a shelter without knowing what they are like. We fell in love with her looks. She now gets us outside at least twice a day and we take long walks while she runs around exploring. We are fortunate to live in a place where she can run without danger. She is sweet, affectionate and is part of all we do ( including vacations). What a gift!

My BC is 8 years old, but he thinks he's 2. He's never stopped running or flying high to catch his Frisby or ball. I talk to him like a talk to humans, and he understands everything I say to the point it scares me. Someone once commented that he trains me, and I fear that is the truth. He worked out years ago, that if he drops his Frisby or ball two meters from me (instead of at my feet) he can run the 50 m to regain catching position while I step the two, to pick up the ball. And he always catches on-the-full. Crowds watch him show off on the beach, doing agility and following hand instructions. If he has to choose between a bowl of yummy food, or his ball, he'll go the ball every time. And I've never needed fences. He knows where the invisible fence lines are, and never ventures beyond them, and he can't cross a road without my instruction. Once I forgot, and kept walking, and when I got to the next intersection, I realized he was missing, still waiting at the last crossroad, trembling with anxiety. They truly are amazing dogs.

It saddens me to see BC's bred for their looks, (the caramel and chocolate colors,) and the 'smarts' are being bred out of them They were bred to work, and you MUST work them and keep them mentally challenged. I just lost my best friend, a border collie who was 16. He was so intelligent and actually had the traits of a service to dog. I miss him terribly and will never be the same. I could write a book about all the things he did for me and all the things we did together - we are even singing on Twitter! I hope he's in Heaven singing with the angels. Our boy, Sasha, was a Golden Retriever, Border Collie mix until he crossed over at age 14 of lung cancer. He was up for adoption at age 2 by our neighbors - through no fault of his own. He was perfect in every way. I can see the warnings you mentioned about what a Border Collie does, but our Sasha had a very happy disposition without nipping, biting or requiring much supervision. The only thing he did not like was being left alone at home. He considered himself as a human member of the family also. They are by far the best breeds on our planet. He was/is a very evolved species.

Our Obi is 5 months now, an energetic pup. There is something very important I don't see mentioned anywhere. Your dog needs to sleep. 16-18 hours when they're young. Border collies sometimes forget this, because they want to keep going untill forever. Give them rest too

My Border Collie is 7 years old. We've had her since she was an 8 wk old puppy. She came from excellent breeding. She needs two exercise outings a day and to be included in the family. She can't be left alone outside or she'll chase birds and bark all day and ruin the yard badly so we commit to exercise outside the home. Do be careful what dogs you socialize them with when young- she was good with other dogs until the day she got attacked by one and now she can't be around other dogs unless she knows them well. She hates strange dogs approaching her at the park. So I have to keep her away from dog parks especially as so many owners there don't know what they're doing.

I have an 8 year old female and 3 year old male and both are very chill, happy to spend the day asleep on their beds either inside or out. They both enjoy their morning walk and play together a lot but I don't think mine are any more work than most other breeds. Mostly, they just want to be with their people, they do need to be trained but love to make your happy. They really are the best dogs.

I have a female border collie and she is 3. She is exactly like your male. She would rather play then eat. When she was 1 she was looking for her frisbee and it was in my room in a chair. I said, Rosie it's in the chair in my room. Wouldn't you know it she went in and barked at the chair to tell me yes, here it is. Clever girl.

My border names boomer. Is very trusting with strangers, rarely barks.. his thing is fetching a ball and or any toy he can fit in his mouth lol.. he’s more scared I find than my lab. And boomer is a male, my lab is a female. He gets stressed while riding in the car. But he is the most LOVING dog I’ve ever had in my life. He’ll cuddle up really tightly

My border collie is 3yo. She is the most amazing dog I have ever known! She truly understands the situation more quickly than I do at times. She herds constantly and that includes kids in a large lake. If one kid drifts off, she will swim over and grab the back of his life jacket and haul him back to the crowd. Amazing! She also instinctively knows when someone is ill. I could not ask for a more empathetic companion. All that said, you WILL be out of the house WAY more often than without a border collie. And, THAT is a benefit I needed and cherish!

This is exactly what we had in mind. Our collie, half bearded, half border, is 12 weeks old now and we intend to walk her three times a day, around 8am for 45 minutes, same around 3:30pm and 30 minutes around 9pm. On weekends we are looking forward to longer walks with picnics in the beautiful Irish countryside. I hope, that will be enough from an exercise point if view. Brainwork will, of course, also be provided.

I've been involved in BC rescue for nearly 25 years. About 27 years ago, my 2 BCs (red & white, white and black ticked) were alone in my back yard while I was at work. Since I hadn't given them a job, they decided we needed a tunnel under the lawn equipment shed. They each dug from different ends (as best I could tell) until they met up in the middle. By the time I got home the tunnel was completed and both dogs were covered in mud from nose to tail tip. I have never left any of my BCs without a job since!

Our Border Collie is 11 years old and has always been on the calmer side. She can go for as long as we go or as short as we go and is ready to settle down. Once she was boundary trained, we never had to worry about her wandering off if she mistakenly got out and she has never bolted out of the door. She is amazingly loyal and can tell when I don't feel good or I am stressed out and is very nurturing.

I have an 11 year old border collie/Australian shepherd mix and she hasn't slowed down one bit! She is helping train another border collie/Australian shepherd mix we rescued that was unwanted and a struggling runt. I have always loved this breed and tend to wanna save the mixes. They make amazing jogging buddies, family protectors, farm hands, and overall jack of all trades. Here's to the collies who never stop working for their families! Cheers!

@@chipmunkred1519 My BC responds to a calm, sweet voice. It upsets him too much if we speak harshly to him. If he does something wrong, I tell him "No, don't do this" in a calm, tender voice. Then I give him a lot of affection to reassure him I still love him.

We just adopted our 1.5 year old BC - she is a beautiful, well mannered girl, a little bit tentative and hides under the sofa bed - we leave her kennel open and draped a blanket over it - she will go in there freely. She is very loving and likes to be petted. After watching this video I think we need to take her out more. She likes to be outside and stays very close to our house. I took her for a walk one day and took a new route to see if she would recognize our house and sure enough she went straight to it.

@@johnjarrel2522 JackBNimble lived to be 17, his mother Tess 16.2, Gypsy 14.8, Bo Peep 13.11, and Gem 13. I think my parents spoiled Gem a bit while I away at college, but my dad fell in love with her (he first told me to take her back to the shelter) when he realised she knew how to make anyone feel better or happier. I had named her Gem the Empath after the alien lady on "Star Trek" in '79. I was going to name my first BC T'Ami, a Vulcan female name, but she didn't like it and wouldn't respond so I named her Tess and she wagged her tail. I had to give her a middle name for her NASDA Registration so I added Siobhan Connor. Gypsy (my first r/w with a right blue eye and left brown eye. The others were bl/w with brown eyes) and Bo were cousins/BFF 1 month apart, though Bo Peep died first.

They're awesome dogs for the right owner. If you're not prepared to put on the work, don't own one... Please! They're incredibly intelligent, sensitive dogs and must be stimulated daily. Mine is now 16 and she was a rescue. She is an incredible dog, my best friend. But I made sure that I provided her with everything she needed. I've always wanted a Border collie so I researched the breed a lot to make sure I could provide a happy home. And the reward has been incredible. My girl is slowing down now, but what a friendship she provided me with. But I cannot stress enough that if you're not prepared to put in the work, please don't ruin the best breed ever.

Great post. Exactly like me and my dog. Although all owners love their Border Collie some should not own one. Taking it for a walk around the block for an hour when you get home from work after it's been locked in the backyard alone all day is not going to cut it. They live it but they shouldn't own it.

I’ve always had border collies and I’ve never had a problem, they have always been loving calm and brilliant with children. My present one is just 5 years old and is calm clever and loves people shows no aggression to other dogs ever but avoids them especially little yappy ones as he has been bitten by them , I could never have any other breed. However I’ve never left them alone for too many hours in the day and they always had lots of exercise chasing a ball. He does like to round us up into a group though 😂

I got mine from a young woman who lived in a apartment in a city , same mistake many people make . Great dog , good owner , wanted a loyal intelligent companion but she was a office worker who didn't drive outside the city center . I never was able to keep the dog indoors . She was not destructive, just always had to investigate every noise , at very high speed and everything in the house would hit the floor First hour home I used her to round up cows . She was little hesitant but just needed positive reinforcement. Used to drive herds of cows all over and I never had to leave my truck Man tried buying her once , got very aggressive about it . I finally told him 3000 $ . That afternoon she went missing. I found out where he lived fifty miles away and went there , she was tied beside his step . He told me she followed his 1/2 ton and he was afraid she would get hit by traffic . He didn't protest when I took her , but I had my rifle in my hand I have had dogs just as smart , but never one as loyal or as good with cattle I used to take her to town and she would stay in my truck , unless she heard kids playing. If she was gone I would just look for kids and that was where she was . Most children didn't know who I was , but they all knew her by name Teen age girls along the street would call her by name when we drove past, Ranch where I worked was site of lot native ceremony's and all dogs were banned , except her , she got a special pass Got lots of pups from her , they were always sold by word of mouth the day she came into heat

The points in this are generally true. The BC needs physical and mental activity. Very long ago, I was given a very handsome, intelligent male BC puppy. He became a true companion. When he passed, I lost my best friend. +40 yrs later, I miss him still. Cannot pull myself together to have another dog.

Firstly, I am a cat lover. My last panther boy passed in Sept. 2021. He was my last, and I'm just too old to start over. That said, we inherited a 5 month old BC in Feb. 2022. She is now just over a year old and with much aggravation and patience she is coming into herself. She would be way better off with younger people than us at just over 70 but we are doing our best. She is loved. And she gets to see her original owners regularly which makes her just about turn inside out. Our son and his family were the owners and they clearly imprinted on her as a young puppy. She did not do well with their 2 very young children and the children did not do well with her either. So, here we are with a dog who thinks she's a cat. Yes, she does! And we are very tired!

I have 3 Border Collies , Momma Blitz 11, Son Stubbs 10 and his sister Lily 10. I also had their father Angel and his Mother Kellie. Before I retired 20 years ago as a Sport Fishing boat Captain Kellie went to work with me on the boat every day and became our docks Mascot. Every Professional Sportfishing Captain and their crews on our island loved Kellie. When ask she would go down the dock hop on the boat you told her to go to out of 28 boats walk up to the boat bow and chase off the pelicans that were sitting on it. She never hurt them as they always flew off the second they spotted her. The Pelicans like to poop on the bow of the boat and if you don't wash it off soon it will get into the fiberglass and stain it . Plus you don't want to have you're charter for the day come up into you're bridge and have to look out over a stinky bow full of droppings. Kellie knew all 28 boats by their name and as soon as she removed the birds she would run back to our boat. Charters who brought their kids also loved that she was onboard so the kids had someone to keep them busy while waiting for a fish to strike. The Border Collie in my thumb nail photo is her son Angel he also loved the ocean and loved to jump off the dock to swim rather I had time for him to do it our not he loved the water. Angels Dad Bam Bam also loved the water and the pool. When people ask me if they should get a Border Collie I always reply "Only if you don't mind your dog being smarter than you." I also tell them you have to give them a job because if you don't they will find something to do and you probably won't like what the job they find for themselves. You will come to know what Unconditional Love is with a Border Collie. I just hope I'm at least half as good of a person that my Border Collies think I am.

I have had several Australian shepherd, border collie and Queensland heeler. My Australian shepherd Toby was the smartest of all of them. Although my heeler Lucy was the greatest escape artist. But the border collie we now have is the most loving dog. She loves every human being even if the human doesn't like dogs. (Don't trust them). She constantly wants attention and loving and gives it right back.

we fostered my mom's friend's bordercollie mix for a few days and my heart has been stolen. i think a mix is especially good because he can have the traits of a bordercollie but maybe not as extreme. this dog was extremely intelligent, kind and loving. and he was basically a matriarchist 😂 because he feared all young men and easily trusts and loves you if you're a woman because he was a street dog before and something must have happened to him. the way he was so quickly so loyal still makes my heart melt. my brother must not feel the same way because all he did was bark at him lol

I have my fifth border, but he's my first male. I'm finding a few differences in behaviors but his athleticism is over the top. Also, I've never found any of my previous girls to not be affectionate, but his affection is (again) over the top. My wife calls him the 'velcro dog'. He won't allow you to stay mad at him.

@@AnimeGuitarist21 I learned from my BCs that when they REALLY wanted to be loved, they would come directly to me for it. Before I knew how important it was to respond, I used to ignore them. But over time, I came to realize that they were coming to ME for reassurance... which only I could give to them. With my last one, I made sure that I immediately stopped WHATEVER I was doing and took time to rub him behind the ears and scratch his neck while I told him how much of a GOOD BOY he was. I kept talking to him through the process while he just stared up at me.... like he was drinking it all in. I found that it paid real dividends, because he was SO LOYAL and SO connected to me. In fact, my wife took a photo of me while I was working on my printer (just off the floor at the bottom of a bookshelf). I had one leg extended backward. And Cody's head was nestled right in the crock of my ankle. He wanted to be THAT close to me. While there are times when BCs may appear to be distant and aloof, there are other times when they REALLY want to connect with you. It is that side of them that is like NO other dog... almost human-like. I still miss mine terribly.

I would like to add a point or two: 6. Give them enough exercise, but don't overstimulate them. Even a border collie gets tired, but most of them don't show it. There is a saying in my country that means "After tired comes stupid" and that is very true for (young) border collies. You could think that they have still too much energy left because they are acting up when in fact, they are way over their point. Training them over this point too often (especially when they are young) will lead to a very hyperactive dog that doesn't know how to rest. If you are not good in sensing the early sign of tiredness (and it is very hard because each dog is different) keep a close watch on the clock. Even a border collie needs plenty of rest. 7. Teach them to endure boredom early! That's a thing you should do with every dog, but it is very important for a border collie. Even a border collie's life shouldn't be 100% action. A good way that worked for us was giving our dog a treat every time he lay down on his own and relaxed. Otherwise, he would try to "herd" the cats (very stupid idea, but you can try) because they are constantly trying to find a job even if they just finished their agility lesson. 8. Border Collies are great in almost everything, but impulsive control isn't their strength. They can get frustrated quite quickly if they don't get what they want NOW. There are easy exercises you can do with your puppy, but remember rule 6: Impulse control exercises are VERY exhausting for all dogs, so even though they didn't run through the fields for 2 hours, 10mins of those exercises WILL make your puppy tired if you do it correctly. 9. A very good recall is essential for border collies because of point 8. It takes time for a border collie to control all their impulses, so make sure that they come back immediately if the twentieth rabbit breaks their concentration. Most border collies don't "hunt" like "chase, kill and eat" but they love the "chasing" part. It takes time, especially when there are many things that could distract your dog.

I have a pure bred tri color male Border Collie. When I picked him as a pup he was the pup that stayed in the background while the other pups were jumping at the fence, having a laid back Border Collie makes a big difference if you want them more as a companion than a working dog. I've had lots of dogs before but this is my first Border Collie, the first thing I noticed was how easy they are to train. They are so smart you will be amazed at how fast they figure things out, there intelligence is matched by their loyalty and kindness. At about 8 months is the first and only time he tried to herd me by nipping at my heals, it only took getting into trouble once for him to stop doing that......that's how eager they are to please you and to train. I live in a rural subdivision 1/3 acre lots and Dusty is never on a rope, there's no fence and he stays home all day if I'm gone, a couple months ago I was late, it was a dark, cold rainy evening and there he was soaking wet sitting in the driveway waiting for me instead of on the back porch were it's dry. Amazing dogs.

My girls were happy to walk whenever I was ready to go, especially if I was going to the shopping plaza near me, a park with people, etc. We don't have a dog park near me, but I could still walk them to the park nearby. My Tess and her son liked to catch balls and frisbee-like discs and play "Border Collie Soccer"- no rules, just fun, together. They and my 2 later girls-Gypsy Rose Lee and LittleBoPee-have joined my first, an Aussie/BC mix-Gem-over the Rainbow Bridge since '18. I miss them all.

Im a first time dog owner, border collie at that. I live alone so i have to leave my dog alone unsupervised for the duration of my work. When i recieved my dog, he was 3 months old. At that age, i felt horrible having to leave him alone. So i would have my mother come by my house 4 hours into my work and spend time dog sitting my pup for an hour then she'd have to leave. That'd leave my pup about 4 hours my dog stays alone until my arrival. When i finally arrive, i immediately go see my pup and start bonding and playing with him for 2 hours, rest for an hour or 2, then play again with him until i have to go to sleep. On my days off, i spend all day with him and take him on car rides. He absolutely loves car rides. Fast forawd to his current age, hes 13 months old and has gotten used to be alone while im away at work. My mother and i keep and eye on him on our security cameras in case he trys his escape arts. Ill have to admit, my dog did develop some bad behaviors that thus video said we shouldnt like my dog hates others dogs but loves meeting new people, as long as he doesnt meet you for the 1st time at my home, he'll take you as an intruder. But on neutral ground, he'll try to give you licks. My BC is an addict on fetch and futbol. He'll always throw his toy balls at me telling me to throw it. With the futbol, he'd kick and push it with his head at me wanting me to run with him with the ball. I never taught him the futbol game, he just learned it by watching me and otger people when we go to the park. He now learned my commands with only my hand gestures. I'd point to him where i want him to go, and he knows excatly what im commanding him to do. I did a full play session wordless and he got most correct. As for the unsupervised part for my dog, i have a sunroom with full screened windows to constant rotate the air to prevent bad smell, a roof for shade and rain protection, a doggy door for outside access with a designated spot for his potty business as well as outside to enjoy the breeze. If it gets cold, i got him a igloo style dog hoyse, i have a thick blanket on his floor in his house and i place a flap with old clothes to trap heat. I put a heater above his dog house and i monitor the heat to make sure it wont melt the house or make inside his house unbearably hot. His house stays toasty at 75° and i have the heater hooked up to a autotimer where it turns on and off every 2 hours during night. For summer, i have an elevated mat bed so he chooses whatever he perfers.

I was warned about there energy. When my b.c. was 6 months old , I started on 3rd shift. Gone for 8 hours then come right home and sleep ( for hopefully 8 hours) she was in her cage while I worked , and the lay quietly on my bed the whole time I slept. Shes the best!

I had one growing up and she was with us throughout my preadolescent and adolescent ages into my young adulthood life. They are very high maintenance dogs because of their very high intelligence and they are extremely energetic creatures. They need to be constantly stimulated and allowed to participate in activities that you’d do. Having lived with one before, I couldn’t imagine anyone getting one and just leaving it at home to get lazy and uninspired.

I have one. He's massive for a Collie, he usually towers over other Border collies and being at a healthy weight for his size, he's 5 kilos heavier than most Collies. He's not excessively nervous and he doesn't nip or bite, except when he's overexcited, but he has no off switch. I do a lot of sports and I take him with me. He can do a long running session, then a walk, then get home and ask to play ball in the garden. The only way to get him to settle is to make him understand it's time to lay down.

The collie shown with the young boy is stressed and unhappy that the child's face is so close to its own. The dog is yawning (a calming mechanism) and turning its head away as far as it can. I feel this should be acknowledged in the commentary - IMO it's implied that the child is interacting correctly with the dog.

i've had 2 rescue b.c.'s, and they were both wonderful. one was a pup a neighbor found in the middle of the road a few blocks from home, but although they put signs up all over (back in the '80's) nobody claimed her. one showed up in a neighbor's yard about 20 years ago, wanted to stay and play with their dog (wouldn't leave), and they couldn't find the owner. i got another one, this time actually from a rescue, and i still have her. a few years ago she got spooked by fireworks (july 4th) before i got outside to bring her in, got out of the fence, and was hit by a car. the people kindly took her to a vet, but i discovered that it was a lousy one. the vet told me she was pretty much ok but needed to stay a couple of days to be sure, no broken bones so no need for x-rays, and when i got her a few days later the bill was $300+! i had to borrow $, so i repaid that (took a month) before i could take her to my own vet. found out she'sd had a broken pelvis and more, that she would degenerate over time (bones had healed improperly), and my vet was always amazed at how well she was doing until late last year when she suddenly could no longer walk and became paralyzed in the back end. she scoots along the floor or, at other times, uses a doggie wheelchair. she loves being lazy and laying on my bed or being in a room where any people are. she hates to be left alone, which never bothered her before, and she can't be left outside by herself.

I've had 3 border collies over the past 40 years or so. The first one lived to be 17 and I presently have a 5 and a 12 year old. You can't over emphasize how much they need off leash, full throttle, outdoor exercise (in a safe place). Best results are with a morning and an evening bout of activity. A couple of other points 1.) Never make the dog feel that the leash is a punishment. 2.) As with people, Never lie to your border collie as they will never forget and the trust is gone. eg. If you say come in the house and get a treat, give him/her a treat. Another point is that many of them will react to medications like Nexgard or other flea/tick/worm pills or treatments as well as monosodium glutamate (MSG). Both can cause convulsions.

I had a BC and to say i had no idea how to train handle or understand our Tess is a understatement. She was loved cared for given everything she wanted but due to my own failings i think she did miss out on a lot of things. I had dogs before but they were just mongrels with very basic needs. But the BC was a different matter all together. Its not easy to confess this but i do think that if your thinking of getting a BC be warned he she will demand all your spare time and the time thats not spare also. I would love another Border Collie but i dont think i could do her justice.

Found a puppy border collie mix on a farm that were incredibly malnourished and almost dead. After a week, the vet. told us that he d would probably die as he was full of parasites and disease. Somehow he made it and turner out to be my best compagnon ever. Can t even imagine that he ll die some day. But beware: super high energy dog that needs a lot of stimulus and work. If provided, they are probably the coolest breed out there. I do huge forest walks every day. Loves to play fetch/frisbee, and we ll do some orher hide and seek games. What i ve noticed: mine is insanely robust, has never been sick. Insane stamina and demands it. Very good family dog. Just be cautious with small loud children. He doesn t bite but their instinct is exactly as described in the video. Also very good protection dog that would a slamming door 20miles away😂

They will learn certain things IF you repeat it over and over to them “Let’s walk” “Stay” “Ok go” “No” “Good boy / girl” etc etc are basic learned verbal commands. They will know your voice and command along with the tone for good or bad conduct, so talk to them a lot when teaching them.

Wow, great memories of great dogs. Early '70s, a good friend had a black and silver Border Collie named Archie. Great dog, loving and super smart. Some how got the chance to sire him out with the pick of the litter. This pup was named Domino. Great dog but loved to jump on it's hind legs. We thought it was cool but he was doing damage. He was eventually put down. Sad. Knew a truck driver who did deliveries for where i worked years ago. They'd just gotten a pup that wanted to do the same thing. Told him the story with a 'tell him to stop' at the end. They just want everyone to be happy. i dunno, the smartest dog on the planet.

Work on trying to tire their brains rather than their bodies. Learning new behaviours. Work with them on gun dog training, do scent work, try obedience, put together heel work to music routines, create a performance to show off their tricks. Do a little agility, add in some hoopers, perhaps a tiny bit of fly ball. Do regular gym conditioning exercises. Teach them to walk slowly over cavaletti on a verbal command. And once they have learnt all these behaviours alternate them but keep on doing them mixing up active days with more thinking days. And when you do take them for a walk allow some down time off lead but also allow some sniff time with no pressure on trying to cover distance.

Had a collie as a child, my brother and I used to go and play cricket and the dog was the sole fielder, she even caught me out once. She could escape through the cat hatch but not get back in that way, had us wondering for a long time how she was getting out. Great pet, though was fully trained when we had her, so command's like stay sit and heel she was fully aware of, at the time we just thought Barbara Woodhouse could teach dogs through the TV. she came with a house our parents brought, the owner was going to have her put down if we didn't want her.

I've had 10 border collies in my lifetime. I currently have four. My nine-year-old is a certified therapy dog. I just had my 1-year-old instinct tested so we are going to be doing stock dog work with him. The other two I haven't quite found what their niche is. But we love doing lots of active things like hiking, swimming and throw in the ball and frisbee.

Verbal TONE is all that is needed to correct a birder collie. A harsh tone if they do something you disapprove of a loving tone when they do something you DO approve of. Never hit them, TONE is all they need to correct them to know good or bad.!

My last Dog was a rescue Tan and White Border Collie, she was hard work at first because she had been in the refuge twice. But she came around and was a very loyal Dog. Also you should vary their walks because they are so intelligent they will easily get bored and misbehave if you don't keep their walks fresh and interesting.

I have had Austrailian Shepherds, a Wheaton Terrior and a Boxer. After we lost our last Aussie (she was my heart) we rescued another Aussie he was 10 months, and a Pyrennes/Border Collie she was 3 months. Our Pyr/BC was born in a kill shelter and her parents and siblings were rescued. Darla looks exactly like a Pyr, body wise, but has the black & white coloring of a BC. She has the best of both Pyr and BC, our 4 grandchildren have lived with us since before we got her so she is great with them, doesn't realize her size (95 lbs) at times especially with our 4yr old grandson they are eye level, she loves the 7 month old and vice versa. Darla's best friend is her lil sister Maddie an Anatolian mix (we lost Rico our Aussie we rescued 6 months after we got him from a lung deformity. We were all devastated, Darla especially, within a week we rescued Maddie for her) and our mini horses Blaze & Socket all play together, they groom each other, have the zoomies running all over and she loves long naps and her favorite thing is eating snow and hanging out in it. I cannot get her to fetch, or anything athletic. Once in a while she will paw at a ball that makes noise or run after a stick but never brings it back, she is like, "you get it" lol. The BC comes out occasionally, with escaping via human error, loves to chase the hens and cats, hoping that will lessen as she ages because our barn cats love dogs & people! She has pinned down several chickens not to hurt them but to pluck their feathers & play, I think it's their quick movements that appeal to her, but we didn't want that so we moved the coop out of the yard. She has cornered a couple of our cats too but not trying to hurt them either, but the cats do not know that! The cats just excite her for some reason, she sees them all everyday all day and it's like the first time everytime! We have never had a fenced in yard on the farm (except the pastures with the cows), did not need them with all our other dogs. All in all, she is a very happy almost 3 year old, a loving dog that we love unconditionally. The Pyrennes/Border Collie mix is a wonderful combination!

I grew up with Border Collies & agree with all of these. The one exception is #5. Our Border Collies ran free, but we were on a farm so they had lots of room to run. We never had one of them run away. This rule is probably true if you don't live on a large property. Another thing to watch for is that they will play/work to exhaustion. One day, we moved misbehaving cattle for 6 hours (9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.). When we got home, Lady (Border Collie) took a long drink of water, got in her dog house & didn't come out until the next morning. She also was working cattle 5 minutes before she had her 1st puppy (she disappeared & found her in the back of his truck with a newborn puppy).

Collies love playing ball & catch and will run for miles. in every sort of weather. You will wear out hiking boots with them if you exercise them properly. They will also be your best friend and sleep on the bed. They also understand every word you say and are a real joy and much fun to own.

You can over exercise a border collie and this will lead to stress. The border collies on the farm where I lived only worked for a very short time every day and were not expected to be on the go all day long. At sheep shearing time when they did need to work long hours, they became stressed and refused to eat.

Generally not a problem if they're fed in the morning. If they're accustomed to work it is not stress that stops them from eating, they're generally just tired and can't be bothered. Feeding them in the morning short circuits this as they're "fresh". Mine only work solidly for 2 weeks early in the new year (and it's HOT!), they cope just fine. But like you said - the rest of the year they only work for very short periods.

The collies where I lived wouldn't eat at any time of day when they were working. Sometimes you could get them to eat something by standing over them and calling them back from any distraction. According to the Van Isle Veterinary Hospital, 'what many people don’t realize is that one of the main factors that contribute to overexcitement is too much physical exercise. A highly aroused dog is stressed. Stress is usually thought of as negative stress or distress. But there is another type of stress called eustress, which is positive stress with potentially negative implications. In human terms, we feel the effects of this stress when highly exciting situations occur, such as winning the lottery or buying your first house. The emotional response to negative and positive stresses are different, but the body actually responds the same. So what does that mean for our dogs? It means that exciting situations still create a physiological stress response in our dogs. This stress response causes physical changes in the body, which releases stress hormones into the bloodstream. These stress hormones don’t just go away as soon as the stimulus has passed. It can actually take up to 6 days for the stress hormones to leave the system, provided no other over-stimulating, or stressful situations occur in the meantime.'

Half true. My collie is 13 yrs old, choose not to socialise with other dogs himself (had oportunities from young age but not much interest in other dogs. He was never an escape artist, he barely likes to go out in garden himself. Yes, he always needed lots excercise and to stay busy but one hour walk a day and some games at home make him happy enough.
