My 8yr old Alaskan Malamute was very quiet one morning - so quiet that I stayed home to keep an eye on him. As I was watching, he suddenly collapsed. I immediately called my vet and bundled the dog into my car. Once at the vet's, he collapsed again. A quick x-ray seemed to show an obstruction and he was rushed into surgery. It turned out that he had a mesenteric torsion - his intestines had twisted. Fortunately, the skill and fast action of my wonderful vet saved his life. 4 days in the hospital and a 6 inch scar later, I was able to take him home. I had another wonderful 6 years with him before he succumbed to old age. Bless all the dedicated vets and all they do.

I’m so happy u were able to see the signs during the day. We immediately took our baby to the vet when we found him but there was nothing they could do. His stomach had also twisted but because we were all asleep, it had stayed that way too long. 😞 we miss him so much.

I had to fly East for a couple of days last week. My partner (Nat) was looking after our two st bernards and called to say our younger 6yo was dry reaching a little bit. I said to keep an eye on him but he does that on occasion. She then said he looked a little uncomfortable when he laid down. I said take him to the vet immediately and don't leave until they have checked him for bloat. First vet said it looked like he may have eaten something so keep an eye on him. Nat voiced her concern to another vet who took him out back for xray. Next call was confirmation that he had GDV. Three days in ICU but no necrosis so it looks like a full recovery (stitches out next week). It really did show the need to know the warning signs.

We just lost our beautiful Golden Retriever to GDV. He was a 90lb 5 yr old beautiful healthy dog and we were devastated. He was at a kennel as we were traveling and we got a call in the middle of the night that he passed away. He was sent to out local vet and they determined it was GDV. I never heard of this but please be aware this can happen to larger breeds. My family is so upset that this happened bc it was so out of left field. I appreciate this video to educated our dog loving community.

This is really helpful thank you for the clear walk through. Our pup is in surgery now and while the vet/surgeon described everything you said, it is helpful to confirm that what they’re proposing makes sense. Only other thing I would encourage other people who might be reading this is that if you take your pup to a vet and they question your concerns and push back - find another vet. We took him to a vet 2 weeks ago and they dismissed our concerns, now my pups in emergency surgery…

This is such a bad thing for dogs that I wish anyone that pick up a new puppy or adopted a dog where notified about this. We just lost are 13 year 3 month doberman pinscher to this and it was devastating to my wife and I to put her down as surgery would have killed her because of her age . Let me tell you you, this surgery will cost between $7,500 to almost $10,000 it is not cheap. We are now in the process of getting a puppy doberman pinscher and when she gets neutered she will have this procedure performed at the same time to prevent bloat. They told us this is best time to do this surgery while your pet is getting spayed or neutered they're already in there it's more cost-effective to do this surgery.

First time I heard about this was this morning. Noticed my dog had a swollen belly and wasn’t’ breathing properly, so took him straight to the vets. Thankfully they diagnosed him quickly and now just been told he’s out of surgery. It’s horrible and every dog owner should know about it and the symptoms. I knew something was wrong but never realised how close we came to losing him today. Just hoping he will make a full recovery 🤞🏻

My golden retriever is 1 year 8 months. I'm so fortunate that I discovered this info on KZbin yesterday. I was feeding him twice daily immediately before he would run around outdoors. Now I know to split his meals into several small and not right before exercise or at least cut back. He's a huge water drinker too. I'll monitor this. Oh so thankful I found out while he's still young. Oh I purchased a large slow eater maze bowl. He's slowing down and as I said I've split his meals into smaller portions

I think my dog had this recently. I researched it extensively and could not find anything that matched the symptoms as closely as this video. I did bring her to the vet but they did not do x-rays or diagnose it. So I spent 36-40 sleepless hours with my dog literally believing she was going to die. Symptoms were expanded chest, stomach. She vomited multiple times the first hour or two until her guts were empty. Then Intermittent "dry heaving" , rapid, repeated heaving that sounded like a chain saw that was cranking but wouldn't start. This would go on for 1-2 minutes. I started massaging her chest and noticed incredibly rapid heart beat. It went from normal to 10 times the regular rate while she was heaving. I thought her heart was going to explode. I started hugging her, massaging her ribs, lungs and chest medium pressure and talked to her gently while this was happening. It helped calm her heart rate and heaving almost immediately. It was almost like I was "squishing" her stomach back to normal but not so hard as to hurt her. This was a big help in calming the fits/seizures but it did not cure the problem, nor did it decrease the frequency. So, massage her lungs, chest, belly with medium pressure while talking to her. It may have saved her life. Now that I know this is likely the issue, if it ever happens again she's going back to the vet immediately. I was terrified. I didn't eat, sleep or go anywhere. She was incredibly miserable and wouldn't eat, drink or even move unless I really encouraged her. She would lay down after 2-3 steps unless I kept her moving.

My dog’s only risk factor besides being a large male German Shepherd age 7 was separation anxiety. They tend to gulp air when panting a lot. I think anxiety causes it more than anything else. He never ate fast, elevated, or exercised before or after meals. And he had full blown GDV with torsion. He survived with ER intervention and he’s still alive 4 years later but ill get my next dog a prophylactic gastroplexy when its young. That’s the only sure way to prevent it.

We just lost our 13 year old weimaraner to this. We knew she was at risk so we followed instructions to keep her meals small. She didn't gulp down her food, she tended to be a slower eater. As she aged, she couldn't have bites of people food anymore as she was prone to pancreatitis. She had some other age related health issues, but nothing directly linked to her stomach. She was active up until the day she passed. We literally let her out to potty in the morning and left her in the lawn while we packed up our vehicle to go kayaking, and when I came back in, I saw her pacing by our back door panting the heaviest I had ever seen. I assumed she was overheating so I let her in quickly to be in the air conditioning. However, right away I saw that she was hunching her back and her belly looked super bloated. I knew this was very very bad and knew this would be the last time I saw her. My husband rushed her to the emergency vet 40 minutes away, but she didn't make it there. She passed in the car. We are adopting again and getting the preventive surgery when we do the spay. I would never want to own another weim without having that done. Its such an awful and traumatic way to go.

My dog....He showed ZERO signs of feeling bad. I went to bed at 11pm....I happened to wake up at 1am and he didn’t come to investigate why I was walking down the hall...I got back in bed and still he wasn’t around so I got back up to check on him for peace of mind. I found him in a corner of the living room. He was breathing but not responsive at all. I had played fetch with him less than 2hr earlier. He never eats large meals and he doesn’t eat fast. He was 3yr old. (German Shepherd )His bowl is not elevated. He doesn’t chew things or eat things he shouldn’t. My dog died. Had I not woken up when I did, my kids would have found him the next morning. We are devastated....zero warning. Zero signs of sickness or distress. Just dead in the night. Vet says it was bloat.

Just a week ago I went through this exact scenario with my flatcoat retriever, luckily I was well clued up on GDV and called the vet with exactly the information you described.Flora,finger's crossed is doing well although still pretty ill. Thankfully she's a young (3year old)very fit dog who gets 3 hours exercise every day,perfect weight,. From the time she started retching till time she arrived at the vet was roughly 25mins.i also call en route to advise them my concerns. I'm so glad I done my research on the breed as I wouldn't have had a clue about the danger flora was in,and I would have lost my best pal.Everyone please please please follow these steps,they will save your dogs life.ive now spent a week sleeping on the floor with my flatty,,only another 3weeks trying to keep her quiet,I've forgotten what a bed feels like ,happy days 😂

GDV with full torsion happened to my dog .. he almost died but I rushed him to emergency overnight vet.. I knew what was happening and how he needed immediate care. he had a gastroplexy and splenectomy.. he survived without any consequence, but it was bad and a long recovery.. my dog is a German Shepherd rescue, male, and was age 7 when it happened. He never ate too fast, or exercised after meals, his food didn’t have oils as top ingredient (he ate Fromm most of his life), but he has always suffered from separation anxiety his whole life since adoption.. nonetheless, I will ALWAYS get the prophylactic gastroplexy in the future when they are young if I do get another dog in the distant future!! It would have been so worth it. My dog is almost nearly 11 yrs old now, and he’s doing well though he has stage 1 chronic kidney disease diagnosed over a year ago and which luckily hasn’t progressed any in the past year since he’s been on a special restricted diet! But, that GDV/torsion was so damn scary, I’ll never risk that again with a future dog ! And I have a friend who had a dog (Golden Retriever) die from the condition while kenneled when he (the owner) was out of town. It happens a lot to large breeds.

It will definitely prevent it! If he did survive the acute condition and I hope that he did, he will be ok in the future. My dog and I went through the same emergency. I’d opt for the prophylactic gastroplexy for my next dog when they are younger!

I've seen people just add a ball (larger than can be swallowed) into the food bowl. It slows down the eating as it gets in the way and they have to constantly move it around with their nose to get the food underneath it around it.

I just lost my best friend (Golden Retriever) to Bloat (GDV). I did not know about this until I googled it on my own that night after we put her to sleep. I wish I would have known about this beforehand. This video is one of the best I've seen about this topic. She was having mobility issues from a bad leg after falling on her stomach and down the stairs and then I raised her bowls thinking it would help her to not have to bend her legs so much. I think it just ended up giving her severe bloat at the same time. We decided to put her to sleep because my Mom didn't want her to go through what our previous dog went through, but our previous dog had a ruptured spleen that ended up filling her stomach with fluid. This was different than that. It seems like the dog we just put down had a bloated stomach from gas buildup, not from fluid buildup. The vet said that it might even be from a ruptured tumor. I wish that we would have got an x-ray just to make sure that her stomach wasn't twisted, but we didn't think about it fast enough. My Mom just didn't want her to suffer. This video is so helpful. Everybody that owns or works with dogs should watch this video. Please don't make the same mistake that I did. Please, keep your dog's bowls on the ground. Dogs are designed to eat with their heads down, like horses. Amen.

He was 13 years old when he contacted GDV one morning at about 3:45a.m. Within an hour he was in the emergency room. The vet told me that although I had pet insurance, it didn't cover this surgery and that is have to come up with 10k before they'd operate. At the time I was homeless and couldn't afford the surgery. my 5 year old rottweiler wanted suddenly to throw up and in a couple of moments his abdominal area got 2x as wide and i rushed him to the hospital and after a procedure that saved him he started pooping blood... it was caused by the preasure in the stomach pushing against the organs and he went in emergency surgery where the doctor took alot of blood out of his abdominal area, cleaned his stomach and put it back in the corect way... unfortunately after surgery he died a couple of hours later because we couldnt get blood transfusions quickly enough and his own blood couldnt clog up... right now my soul is broken... but what i can do is give some small advice that i wish i knew... dont let your dog eat or drink water from bowls that are at ground level, elevate them to his chest height, dont let him eat much, its better more small meals a day, dont let him drink water after he eats, dont let him play right after a meal or get agitated

@ConeOfShame

This is a question I'm getting all over the place after this video, and it's a great one. Here's the deal: There seems to be a correlation between large and giant breed dogs eating out of elevated bowls and them getting GDV. The research isn't strong enough to say "Eating from these bowls CAUSES GDV," just that "GDV tends to happen to dogs eating from elevated bowls more often than those who do not." There are probably a bunch of different factors involved, but elevated bowls are one to be aware of. Elevated bowls are GOOD for some medical conditions (like arthritis that makes eating from a bowl on the floor harder, myasthenia gravis, or mega esophagus. My point is, I'm not panicking about them, but if your dog doesn't need one, I'd probably go without.

My 7 year old Silver Labrador just last week got GDV in the blink of an eye, he was acting like his normal self all day if not more energetic than usual then I had left the house for about an hour and came home to immediate symptoms, he was bloated without having eaten anything all day and wouldn't lie down, wanting to go outside every couple minutes to try vomiting and crapping but couldn't do either, after about an hour of him progressively getting worse and beginning to moan in pain I knew something was wrong, he has had his fair share of injuries in his life and all of which he didn't seem to feel any pain (paw getting run over by atv, snout has been sliced open many times, fallen out of a truck headfirst, etc.) but that night he was in some serious pain, I googled the symptoms and the first thing I read was GDV and that it needs to be treated right away, so I picked up my mom and we went to the emergency vet clinic and they told us he had GDV and showed us the X-ray of his empty stomach filled with gas, along with his intestines, and showed us his spleen hadn't been where it should be... Vet told us he needed immediate surgery that would be between 7 to 10 grand... Dogs are equals in our family so luckily with a few phone calls to family members we had the money and were on our way to surgery where he spent a couple hours, then about 24 hours recovering in which time we couldn't visit him as to not excite him too much... according to the surgeon we had gotten him in just before chances become much lower, so he got out with just a gastropexy... If we had been a little later like most folks apparently are, he likely would've had to have his spleen removed along with parts of his stomach. We are so happy to have our boy back even in his cone of shame, he's back to his old self already and continues to be the jackass that he is.

Can bloat be caused by swimming and "eating" the water? Took my BC to the beach yesterday and he likes to play in and eat the water, his stomach looks bloated now and his energy is way down from what it normally is. He is still okay, walking and moving around but I think just needs to rest. Also, got any tips on how to prevent this in the future?

this scares me, I have my 1st Doberman 1 and 4 months. I feed him in the morning and leave him in his crate for 2 hours, he drinks once he comes out and goes outside. then at Night I feed him for the 2nd time and leave him for again 2 hours, he goes out no water before bed. he is my Servers dog so I worry about him greatly,I wanted to know sometimes I take him out only an hour and half after he has been feed, is that too soon? or it should be OK, I don't bring him out early unless I need to or he is going to lay next to me on my bed. or ride in the car for half an hour or so

My dog’s only risk factor besides being a large male German Shepherd age 7 was separation anxiety. They tend to gulp air when panting a lot. I think anxiety causes it more than anything else. He never ate fast, or exercised before or after meals. And he had full blown GDV with torsion. He survived with ER intervention and he’s still alive 4 years later but ill get my next dog a prophylactic gastroplexy when its young. That’s the only sure way to prevent it.

Wish o knew this long ago, yesterday my dog had to be put down because she had this problem and she was old. And the vet recommended to put her down, based on her blood test results... which she had too many issues and she was really bloated. Avoid this early on, there's non worse than loosing a friend.

I have a friend that lost her girl to bloat about 3 weeks ago. They had been to the ER vet earlier in the evening, xrays did not seem to show the stomach flip so they did some treatment to relieve the bloating, but the owner had to rush her back about 11:30pm because the dog's (Merry) condition had worsened. Emergency surgery was done, the stomach had flipped but not the spleen, so the stomach was tacked, and 2 days later Merry went home. But she kept getting some bloating which was somewhat relieved with something like Gas-X, however a couple of weeks later they had to rush Merry back to the ER vet, her stomach had flipped again, despite having been tacked, the stitching had been torn loose, the spleen also twisted, and they had to humanely euthanize Merry. Is this a common thing, that even after the stomach has been tacked that it can still twist?

My dog had bad gas since the past few days, today he had trouble with movement. We have him a human anti-gas syrup and rushed to the vet middle of the night. In his ex-ray, all was clear (maybe the anti-gas helped). Now we gave him some shots and laxatives to ease his stools. Now waiting for morning, we would take him to the vet again

My 8 year old miniature Schnauzer just had a dental cleaning done with 7 extractions. She's currently on clavamox because Dr said her WBCs were a little high and they didn't know where the infection was coming from. My dog also has a heart murmur, so to help stabilize her BP, she's on enalapril. After the dental procedure, they prescribed her Rimadyl for 5 days for pain. She hardly eats anything, I'm assuming because of the antibiotic, but she seems very bloated to me. She is spayed, so it can't be a pyometria... What do you think the problem is? I apply pressure to her stomach, which is firm and she grunts like she has trouble breathing. Help!

I've got a Doberman Pincher, going to be 2 in January, and I've looked into this long before we even got her. I was wondering what your thoughts are on getting a female dogs stomach "pinned" while they are getting spayed. I wanted to do that for Nora, but the vet didn't offer that service when we got her spayed. Also on a different subject, I have a 15 year-old Dachshund who's teeth are just awful. He doesn't like any chew toys or dental bones, and due to hia age, he can't be put under for a teeth cleaning. Do you have any suggestions for elder pup dental health? Or maybe do a video on It? Thanks!

My wife and I are about to receive a rescued 4-year-old great dane. Much thought and planning have been put into this, so I am looking at getting a bloat kit. Do you have any suggestions on applying it properly if need be? Wrong tube, how to measure, the liquid medicines that seem to be offered with it? Thank boss, you do great work!

So it's not recommended to add oils to their food either?
@ConeOfShame
@ConeOfShame 7 жыл бұрын
Good question. I often recommend fish oil for different skin or hair coat problems. It's loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids. I think the point here is more "Don't buy crappy dog food that has oil as a key ingredient." Ingredients on dog foods are listed in order of their weight, so if oil is at the top, that means this is some oily grub. We don't exactly know how the oil content plays into the condition, just that it was a finding that correlated with the illness. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

All my life I’ve raise, showed, owned large/giant breeds. For at least 30 of those years I’ve fed from raised bowls. I have never in those 30years of feeding from raised bowls. There is absolutely NO proof that raised bowls causes or attributes to bloat!!! So, on this point I 100% disagree! Actually in 51yrs of owning dogs even prior to using raised bowls, never had a case of bloat. Here’s the thing and I’m not a vet...however, being an owner of large and giant breeds, i think the following are key in preventing bloat. First and foremost genetics are a factor. Make sure you talk to the breeder (if possible) and find out if their dogs have a history of bloat. I believe one of the main keys is making sure your dog eats slow, if they gooble food quickly, there’s no need to purchase a special bowl. Get a large rock or even a canned good and put in your dogs bowl, they have to eat around it and it slows them down, feed several small meals a day, have them rest for an hour after eating, a lot of large/giant breeds tend to drink a great deal, make sure you monitor their water intake and if they are drinking an excessive amount at once, take the water way and have them rest for a while before being active/playing. Personally, I’ve had dogs that eat like they’ve never been fed before and i have dogs, such as now, I have a Caucasian Ovcharka and a Great Dane, they both are very slow eaters, to the point i free feed, they have one bowl and I fill that bowl once a day. It’s not a huge bowl, it’s your typical large bowl, that fits into a cheap walmart plant stand. They go through 30lbs of food in 2.5 to 3 weeks. So, from that you can see, they aren’t eating an excessive amount. Both dogs are also kept at a lean healthy weight. Anyway, the biggest reason for my comment is to share what i know as an owner and to state the fact there is NOTHING that backs using raised bowls as a cause of bloat. 30yrs of using them and i will continue to use.
