Stacey, this is the BEST explanation and summary I've seen on the new USDA Hardiness Zone map! I just shared it in my "Community" with my fellow gardeners on my own channel. Thank you so much for putting this together! ❤

The zone change probably won’t affect how I garden but this is the best explanation I’ve heard. Thanks for the breakdown. 😊

Thanks so much! The updated zones really don't change too much, and you know yours is going to stay hot, haha 😄☀

😅 I went from a zone 5 b to a zone 6 a according to this new map now. I have been sweating over some Japanese sky pencils I planted this summer that was tagged zone 5 but conflicting online info saying it was only hardy for zone 6 I have a 50/50 chance this winter and hoping they make it through!

They should be okay! Of course, it always depends on how the winter plays out but they definitely have a good chance of surviving through and getting more established for the coming years ☺

I always tell my nursery partner that we’re more a 7a instead of 6b but last year we experienced a -7 night. It burned a lot of evergreens because right before that we had about 4-5 days of 60 degrees.

Your weather sounds as moody as ours here in West Michigan, haha. Fingers crossed for a mild winter this year!

Won’t be relying on the changes - was zone 5b and I live on the border of two suburbs like two streets away . If I plug in my zip code it’s 6b but if I plug in my neighboring suburb, it’s 6a. If I zoom in on the map , the green shading is hard to tell if it’s zone 6a or 6b. Won’t be changing my planting habits but I’m gonna be more daring to try some zone 6 plants . Have to keep in mind that there may be winters that can be colder than the new zones

You are in a funky middle area but you definitely have the right mentality with it! Worth trying some new things out but not going overboard with it 😂😄

I've been in 7a for years, but we've had several nights in the minus teens the last 3 years, so I consider myself to be in 6, regardless of the map.

The plant hardiness link doesn’t work very well.

That link is the USDA's, if it's not working you could try to open it in a different browser 🙂

Always giggle when I see how this map cuts off the reality that Canada is right there….on the north side of the long, long upper line! We Canadian gardeners up here share hardiness zones with your northern states! In fact, southern Ontario, which is right across the lake from you in Michigan, and just a boat ride across the lake from Ohio, and New York State. What makes more sense is to show North America…geography, anyone??
