Great video!! Thanks so much. For people who want a quick recap: 1. Computer is better than phone or iPad 2. Plug internet directly into computer if you can (not wifi) 3. ZOOM is preferable to Skype or FaceTime 4. Buy a nice Webcam (Logitech Brio or Logitech C920/C922) 5. Must have a notation program.

Thanks for mentioning the software. I already use musescore to write melody, but I'll use it to teach chords and write some cool exercises. Having a webcam that you've mentionned is important too - a good dedicated microphone something to think about as well. Also I would't have thought about ethernet... Another thumb up for that!

This was really good. Thank you . I have been teaching online for a week after 15 years of one on one. It's starting to work since I followed your tips. I switched to Zoom in the last couple of days and I like how stable it is and how easy it is to adjust the controls. For a musician, used to dealing in hardware technology like keyboards and pianos and recording, it is a very intuitive way of working compared to Facebook which I was also using. This stuff is going to keep getting better, so let's all embrace (in a virtual way) as a musical community. Stay safe and many thanks. Richard in Australia

Recording calls with Skype can be done with a little extra app called Call Recorder. It works great. Whenever you launch Skype it opens up as well and it records your whole conversation (audio and video) without you having to do any extra clicks. As far as notation programs are concerned, you should check out MuseScore 3. It is completely free and works great. The developers keep adding new and useful features. I am on old Sibelius user and I switched because I didn't like the new subscription model of Sibelius, not to mention the initial purchasing costs.

Thanks heaps Daniel ... Ive been meaning to make up missed lessons for my students for so long ... now it seems I will be using it more soften . Good to know about the better quality cams .. but what about audio ? Most of my students I get audio cut in and out ... Im guessing due to the inferior computer mics ?

Hi Daniel, do you have any tips on lighting please?
@DanielSeriffMusic
@DanielSeriffMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. Thanks for reaching out. When using the Logitech Brio, I don't add any light. I have a lot of natural light in my studio right in front of my face. The brio allows you to control the brightness. If I'm using nicer cams, I have some large LED lights with soft boxes on them. In that case I adjust my camera's ISO and am able to create a really nice look. Tons of reasonably priced lights on Amazon. Just make sure you aren't backlit.

While I love being F2F in our lessons, the online ones are really good too because you’re showing me multiple things at once... I was surprised at how valuable the zoom lessons have been. Basically, you’ve got the online thing DOWN!

Good video Daniel! Just a note on Skype is that you can actually record the visual and download it within 30 days. It's not good quality though! I've never tried Zoom, gonna check it out... Skype has been working great for me and I've been teaching online for about 5 years now. But if Zoom is better then I'l be swayed!

Do you use a DAW for your electric or just have your amp sound come through the same mic you speak in?
@DanielSeriffMusic

It depends. Recently I have used an app called "Loopback" to mix the audio from my DAW as well as the live mic in the room. If you have a great mic, you really don't need to run it into the DAW.

Just a question about increasing the sound quality on Zoom for the 4 instruments I play and teach...drums guitar, bass and piano. I need to be able to find and download their app called: "Software for Audio Processing " to get rid of the "compression " the "echo" and all background "white noise" that happens in they voice and group meetings that they mostly are equipped to do. Until I solve this mystery , I am unable to demonstrate playing live since the sound is terrible and massively compressed. Zoom has not been helpful at all in sending me a download of this app. All I get from them are misdirections and deflections as if they do not comprehend what I am requesting from them to send. If there are higher level and higher quality "sound solutions" please do let me know as I have many students desiring their lessons at this time.nd I am set up to deliver. I also have a pro ZOOM HD2 video camera which records very well. I'm wondering if it may be used easily to set up on it's small tripod to provide an even better image and learning experience. Thanks for your help.

one very important aspect of teaching online is the fact you can´t play with your student at the same time, is there any app out there that solved that issue already?
@DanielSeriffMusic
@DanielSeriffMusic 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you completely. There are no apps that work, unfortunately. In my course I talk a lot about workarounds. The biggest thing is that you just have to create backing tracks that support the students. I find it actually gives students more responsibility to thoroughly learn their parts.

@@DanielSeriffMusic Hi Daniel appreciate your time - really didn't expect a response - but thank you. Forget MIDI - put it the wrong way. Was meaning a USB guitar interface direct to computer. Last time I was doing it was with a Guitar Rig 3 and a sessions i/o unit. That was a while back. There's a bewildering array of units on the market was wondering from your experience what you'd recommend.

Oh cool! Yes...I believe the best is the UAD Ox box. Expensive. Best value - Strymon Iridium or HX Stomp. Some have dedicated usb like stomp for direct. The iridium doesn’t but you could run it into a simple interface like a focusrite or Presonus.

You are absolutely on a completely different planet to me hun. $100 an hour which is about £70 English money! There is absolutely no way I would get anybody to pay £70 an hour for a guitar lesson. Where I live people cannot afford £20 an hour for a guitar lesson!!!! I thank you for doing the video but it’s taught me nothing about the pedagogy of teaching online. All it’s taught me to do is go out and buy a load of expensive new gear! I teach online using an iPad and I email any resources to them before the lesson. Chances are that the student will be using a crappy old tablet or phone and they won’t have a laptop so they won’t be able to take advantage of the screen sharing anyway. Also they will only be viewing it in 4k if they have a 4k device. All I can say is you must live in a very affluent part of the world!
