Glad to see the Audio Technica ATM710 rated as the best high end microphone. I own it too, and I use it when performing outdoors, while accompanying myself with the acoustic guitar. I engage the high pass filter and -10db pad on the mic, add a foam windshield, and it sounds extremely balanced, no muddy or harsh frequencies.

Breath noise is also highly person dependent. It can be reduced by opening the airway and minimizing nose breathing.
@josku5 Жыл бұрын
About the breath noise, I’d say not to do what you showed. If you sing into the mic at a 90° angle it usually changes the sound with cardioid or supercardioid polar patterns. A better way to do it would be to have the mic pointing at the corner of your mouth from either side. Then you don’t breath straight into the capsule but the mic points directly at the sound source.

Thanks for this very informative review, good reference 👍 . What confuses me is there are tons of reviews in YT and forums about the best dynamic mic, and surprisingly when you see a concert of popular band- sometimes you them using that cheap Shure SM58 hahaha I remember there was even a Bruno Mars video singing on SM58 😅 Unfortunately, I already own few dynamic mic with good reviews before I saw that haha I intentionally avoided that cheap SM58 mic only to discover it is widely used by pros. Maybe since almost all of them are using high quality hardwares like preamps, mixer, effects, etc- even the cheapest mic can sound amazing.
@PluggedinAV Жыл бұрын
The thing with SM58 is it’s been around for years so lots of old school artists and technicians use it just because it’s what they always use. In my opinion the 58 has been surpassed by modern technology and you can now get cheaper better mics. But for some people it’s just a case of sticking with what you know

Hi, I am looking for a mic that matches my vocal tone. My wife and I sing at our church and our kids serve as well. My vocal tone has a mid to high timbre and I guess a 'muddy' phone will suit my vocal type. I also can project but I find that I have to almost kiss the mic when I use my Shure C606 (I have a really low budget LOL), and when I use my wireless Dynamic mic I can stand a little away and be heard and be a bit more relaxed; although it picks up more sound other than my voice. Mind you, I sing and play the guitar and I find it difficult to use my Shure unless I use a boom mic stand. Also, I have a XLR wireless transmitter for the mics, and I notice that the Shure C606 does not have a good pick up when hooked up wirelessly. What I was hoping to get from this video was what type of mic is matched with different vocal timbres AND what type of mic (dynamic vs condenser vs cardioid, et al.) is best for certain vocalists (backup singers, main vocals, etc). I have been looking, but I need some more info if you can provide. Thanks a bunch. BTW my dream mic is the Shure S55H =)

Hey, it’s pretty difficult to make recommendations like this. It’s really worth trying some out if you can. I would say rather than choosing a mic that is opposite to the sound of your voice you will probably find it better to find something that is the same ie. A ‘muddy’ sounding mic will just make your vocal sound muddy rather than work with your tone. I would choose something that works with a mid high tone. A mic that has more going on in the tonal range will give you scope to shape that vocal more where as a mic with less in that range will just give you less control over your vocal. You could take a look at something like the SE V7. It’s dynamic so will help with control and also work with a louder voice. But worth trying it if you can
@dadaUnts2 жыл бұрын
@@PluggedinAV I guess you're right. My thinking was that the 'muddy' mic would compensate for my vocal tone. I was just looking more into the larger diaphragm condenser mics so I can be more free compared my 'kiss the mic' situation with my cheap C606. What could you recommend for condenser mics, and are they suitable to what I am about to use it for; at church - which is not a studio type of atmosphere.
@PluggedinAV2 жыл бұрын
@@dadaUnts A condenser will pickup more stage noise so it depends on what else is going on around you. I really like the Audio Technica ATM710 but it will pickup other things around you

The handling noise is much worse than a 58👍🏻

@Plugged-in AV Thank you. That's really bad. Is it way above 100 Hz? Because use a 100 Hz Highpass anyways.I really liked the tuning of it. Then I will check out the se V7 next. Great video but more details about the single Mics would have been nice.

You should include Shure Beta 87A and Sennhesier 965 Wireless capsule. I have the Shure Wireless SM58, Beta58 and Sennhesier Wireless EW e815, e835, e945, e865. My best is Wireless Microphone system is Sennhesier EW G4, E865 capsule. I put in the e965 Capsule on order. To be honest only two Professional microphone companies are out there are Shure and Sennhesier. Sennhesier is still developed and made their product in Germany and USA. Shure microphone equality has been degraded since the last twenty years, poor quality All made in China and Mexico. Shure product used to be Made in the USA in the 80', sadly to see their products are poorly made. I would stay away from Shure product from experience. Great Video.

Holding a cardioid mic upright is not desirable, the capsule was designed to work optimally from the front, not the side. That is actually bad microphone technique.

Thank you for putting together this review. I'm sure it took a lot of time. I only wish you could have quantified each microphone in each area, added a weighting, and then added an overall "value" category. I personally am partial to the Audix OM2 and OM5 and Sennheiser e945. I absolutely hate the SM58 and Senn e835. As a brand, I favor Audix and AKGs. I would also add a disclaimer in your review to say that condenser mics may have more detail but dynamic mics handle better dynamics and loudness levels without distorting. I also find dynamic mics to have a more linear response than condenser mics -- IMHO.
@JodiCurtis11 ай бұрын
dynamic mics have proximity effect, and are definitely not more linear, every mic dynamic or otherwise has its own filter circuit so this is just completely wrong. Higher end condensers produce much more linear sound. Most people don't want a linear sound, there is always a desire for a slight or moderate high frequency bump for vocals, with bass and mids sculpted by the mic designers. The DPA D:Facto 2 Mic at £980 is as linear as it gets, and the DPA 4018 even more so. But this is going to need EQing for the artist on stage. He also missed sibilance, vocal distance to shape the bottom end, and how dynamics might need to need a powerful voice, and will have unavoidable 10db bass proximity effects if you sing quieter, or a £150 cloud lifter to stop hissing, and condensers which sound the same 6" away but may pick up or feed back, and require you to almost be touching the mic to get a little bass lift.

I haven't gotten my hands on a PR35 just yet but I've used a handful of Heil mics and own a few myself, highly recommend (except the PR48, it's just kinda floppy). Glenn Fricker is/was very happy with the PR35 which is IMO a great endorsement. From shootouts I've listened to it's pretty dang solid, but $270 is a bit much for me.
