5 common things you will hear or may have already heard about betta fish. Making a video in the future about the basics to betta fish care and how to attempt a community tank with your betta!

Yes! My Betta was in a cup at Petsmart, and I couldn’t wait to take him home to his 3 gallon tank. Once he was ready and in, he was moving around everywhere! He’s so happy there and I can’t help but feel super happy as well! :)

When I upgraded my half moon, Fizz, from a half gallon to a 3 gallon tank, he chilled in the corner he was near when he went in, then as soon as he found out there was actually a lot more room to move he wouldn't stop zipping around at max speed for the next couple hours

I went in the store to buy my betta fish. He looked depressed in the tiny tank he was kept in. He was scared of everyone, and stayed at the bottom of the tank. I bought him, and took him home and he went into his tank. It was amazing to see how he immediately started exploring the tank, and looked like the happiest betta alive. Now, he is living in a 10 gallon mansion with a small snail, and I don’t regret getting him. I am only young, and take great care of him. Trust me, I did my research before buying him. I want everyone to realise that betta fish aren’t ornaments or decorations, it’s a life.

I had a beta fish without research, but that's because my Aqua was a gift for my birthday, as soon as I got it I did research got him a better tank than the one he was given and better food better decor and real plants for him! Thank you for setting things straight! Pet shops owners often forget that they sell animals and not only "things". They have a responsibility to educate the public in order to provide the best living conditions for the pets they sell. I wanted to point out that Betta Fish do not live in puddles. Originally they lived in rivers that became so small during the dry season that they left only pockets of water in which the Betta got caught. The strongest would survive the heat and lack of oxygen until the rain would turn the puddles back into a river. So they are not meant to live in puddles they are only built to survive a small amount of time in puddles. They are now an endangered species and their poor living conditions are being pointed out by animal activist. So, YES if you can’t spare 30$ for an animal, you should definitely not by one.

When we bought our beta fish the lady at the store asked ZERO questions didn’t even ask the size of the tank or any other fish in the tank if we have had one before nothing... she did ask us tho if she could help us... sigh good job we knew what we were doing with a beta... our guy (Skittles) he’s red and blue and teal/green he perked right up in his new tank. He is so much happier in his tank than in the cup and we only have a 2.5 gallon can you imagine just how much happier he’d be in a bigger tank?! We Are really toying with a bigger tank and making it a community tank. But we will be doing our research before that happens.

@@ChrissyWhispers1 you should definitely get a Plecostomus with a betta or any other non vibrant cleaner fish. It's a perfect non aggressive mix and will give your betta the perfect friend

@@nickishadows9513 most plecos get too big for any tank smaller than a 30 gallon, the smaller species are a minimum of 30 gallons, so unless you're keeping your betta in the 30 gallon, maybe recommend a 10 gallon with Cory catfish 😅🙏

I was at petsmart to get hamster bedding and ended up walking out with a tank that came with a filter and stuff, I decided since our petco is wayyy nicer than our petsmart I would stop by petco for a betta but I saw the sad sick Bettas at petsmart and some were dead, most were sick and I fell in love with one who had almost no fins left yet he was the healthiest one, I took him home knowing he wouldn't make it long and slowly I nursed him to health and his fins are gorgeous and full and he is soo happy and gets excited when I walk up to the tank and "play" with him. Now Bettas are my addiction. I've been a fish owner for 5-6 years but man Bettas are soo sweet and have such big personalities they are different from any other fish I've owned

From the small betta cups, to the 30 fish in the 20 gallon divisions of the fish walls, multiple hamsters in each habitat. It's horrible but we get the jobs to try and give them the best lives we can while they are there and to get them good homes.

I have actually hissed (quietly) at an end cap display of containers marked "Great for Bettas!" that had a lower volume than the water bottle I was carrying. My arch nemesis is those teddy bear bowls. They're tiny, like everything else sold specifically for bettas, but what do kids do with teddy bears? At best, they carry them around everywhere, and at worst, take their aggression and frustration out on them. Most fish don't do well travelling, so imagine the trauma of being sloshed around constantly, let alone flung around and bashed against a wall/floor. If you wouldn't keep a German Shepherd in a tiny crate all day, don't keep a fish that way. 😢

Personally, I like to give my Bettas a minimum of 5 gallons per fish because it breaks my heart to see them in little cups. Also NEVER put them in a tank with guppies. They think they are other Bettas and will attack them. I feed them flake food but supplement that with bloodworms and brine shrimp. The oldest Betta I ever has was named Thanatos. He lived 7 1/2 years. A little prank I sometimes pulled on him was putting a mirror up to the glass and whatch him get all puffed up for a fight. It was hilarious but he would calm down after the mirror was taken away.

Maybe mine were not mellow, but they never bothered my other fish. When I had Thanatos, he was in a 50 gallon community tank when he killed my guppies but never bothered to hurt any other fish, even the little neon glows who sometimes pestered him. Perhaps some Bettas mistake big fancy tails for another betta? Though Damion's tail didn't set him off(fancy goldfish)

I have a tiny cramped apartment but can still fit a 10 gallon. Maybe if you get one that's more tall than wide? They also make 3 gallons. But remember, the smaller the tank, the harder to maintain ideal levels of nitrates and such.

Theyre stupid. They are fish. Not people. They do better in larger setups, tiny tanks and vases are stupid, as is keeping them in the cup theure bought in, but in the store, they fight too much to be kept together and they take up too much space if u have 20 fish in individual 5 galon tanks. They should be treated well but they arent people. They die. Its sad. Its usually not a tragedy unless u really liked yer fish.

This is so sad. I think I was lucky when I bought my betta fish a few weeks ago. He seemed healthy at first glance but I think he had mild fin rot. Thing is those cramped little tanks at the pet shop don't have heaters in them. There's been a lot of cold spells where I live so I have no idea how those fish coped with that since I know they like warm temperature. Plus they could see the betta fish in the tank next to them. I assume those fish must've been flaring at each other a lot, more than what's good for them. I think I was lucky because I got him before the cold weather really started. I gave him a few salt baths and have found to my delight that he's responding to bettafix. He's in the biggest tank I could find at the pet shop: 10 litres. Even though he's still recovering, I think he's happy with his heater and filter and all the space he has now.

Lol I've been keeping Platys in my 2.5 gallon after I made the first mistake of getting a goldfish from Petco. Both of those things are equally a mistake. Went and got my Platies from PetSmart, only putting two in to avoid overcrowding, and they are living just fine. The size of the of the tank only depends on how often you should clean it. I clean out my gravel almost every day, if not every other day, to ensure there was no food lost at the bottom. I keep my water clear, and do occasional small water changes with a small cup, scooping debris up from the top, and replacing with tap water I purified. Platies are happy and healthy. Don't always take everyone advice about tanks, because they aren't always right. They say 10g minimum for even one Platy...but I have two, and they are so happy, and have such awesome personalities

I have never had an aquarium. A week ago I was in Petsmart buying stuff for Rollo, my Rat Terrier, when I saw a fish in a small cup. I figured this is all the Betta needed and would be cool to let him live in a clear glass small vase I have. After putting him in the vase he would just set there and I could tell he was not happy. I then decided to do research on Betta's and found your video plus many more about how to keep a Betta. I thought about his for a day and then decided to take care of my Betta, Clint his new name. I bought him a ten gallon tank, silk plants and a couple of ointments for the tank, along with heater and Whisper pump to clean the water (Wow I really done my research, most in a couple of days.). When I released Clint in his new home, he came alive. He started swimming all over the tank and didn't stop swimming for an entire day. Now he is happy and I feel much better about myself.

my poor Betta can't swim very well. I rescued him from walmart. could barely see him in the water and some asshole put him in the fridge with the milk. so I brought him home and brought him back to life. but sadly, his spine is crooked and he can't swim correctly. barely at all. quick spurts to the surface, so I keep the water about half way so it's less of a journey. but he's happy otherwise. good size tank, clean water, plenty of food. he's special but I love him anyway. :)

Andrew Yong I've already had him for a good 5 years now. I've tried vitamins and I've taken him to the vet. they said he has a crooked spine. he'll never be able to swim well. but he seems pretty happy. I'm moving soon and I'm upgrading his tank so he'll be happier soon. :3

My beta (I still have him!) Was about 6 to 10 months old when I got him, and he's been alive for 4 years! I've had him in a 1.5 to 2 gallon cylinder shaped 1 foot tall tank for a majority of that! I have owned about 3 bettas before him, and he's lived the longest, and he's still doing very well! Love this video

Since I bought my betta from the store, I put him straight into a larger tank like yours and he grew bigger within a month and is really active now comparing to when he was in a tiny glass square. I even hold food over the tank and he will jump out the water and try to get it. Its so cute.

As a Betta lover and breeder I have to disagree with some of your information. The most common place to find wild Bettas is stagnant water. meaning any slow or still source of water. They can be found in rice paddies, shallow creeks/streams/Brooks, or in deeper waters as long as there is little to no surface agitation and current. You are also not correct on the bubbles. The male's will blow bubbles and build a bubble nest when they are content and ready to mate. once the nest is completed they will chase and harass (sometimes to the death of) the female until she willingly goes under the bubble nest where they then embrace and procreate. Bettas and Paradise fish/gourami's (which I also Breed) are closely related to each other and are relatively from the same area with almost identical needs. Also you can put male's with male's and females with females. The key is in keeping siblings as they work out a pecking order. Same for the gourami's. I've been dealing with both Betta's and Paradise Gourami's for over 20 years.

I knew the bubble nests were due to breeding desires! That's why I mentioned it doesn't have to do with their level of contentment about their water conditions, it doesn't mean "happy". But I understand what you're saying about where they come from! I wasn't trying to say they didn't come from these places, but that they didn't come from tiny little puddles. Creeks and streams may be shallow but they do normally have a good length to them, more than a puddle like people assume. I've never sucessfully kept males together but I know a few people who do! I figured most people watching this were people who just want a betta for their kid or something to keep without much work, and most those people won't know where to get sibling bettas. and I know females can live in soriority tanks together, but again some people have trouble! so I didn't want to go into all the details of "if" and the technicalities of it, rather just let people who want the basics know it isn't the most common success in the whole world. that's awesome that you've been caring for them for so long! +Taylor Nicole Dean I totally get where you are coming from. You were trying to cover basics. Many pet stores now sell fingerlings with genders labeled. If you get them young enough you can still raise them together as long as you get a few. The more young ones you get together the easier it will be for them to work out their dominance and not fight unless you add in one of opposing gender. My favorite ones to breed are the mustard gas because they are beautiful and the colors are endless. My main breeding pair is a female black and gold mustard gas and a male green and gold mustard gas. Their offspring have been lovely to have. But the only down side is that technically all my fish and inverts end up food for each other. But that's what happens in a 300 gallon self sustaining aquarium. Everything breeds and feeds on what is available. 😖 I still take the prettiest and healthiest to their own tanks and breed them and sell off the rest of the babes. In all honesty the care of each fish is different as they all have a mind their own. Even I occasionally run into disgruntled fish that have to be completely alone. Those tend to become food for the bigger fish as they don't have the risk of being too hard to care for.

Also I'd like to add that just because some fish CAN live in very poor conditions in the wild doesn't mean we SHOULD keep them in poor condtions in our tanks. It's amazing how some animals have adapted to extreme environments, but they will be much happier in captivity given better conditions to live in. I like your advice on this topic, bettas along with goldfish are 2 of the most abused fish in the hobby.

I try to take the best care of my fish that I can, and I had one in a 5 gallon tank once, which the cat knocked over. We didn’t know that it was the tank that got knocked over until about 5 minutes later, where I found my betta fish on the carpet, and desperately tried to get him into a new bowl so I could fix the tank. He survived and lived happily for another year after that. Amazing how he stayed out of water that long, and still made it. I’m really proud of him lmao.

I feel so bad. When my parents got divorced my mom promised me and my sister we could each get a Betta fish. She got us these tiny bowls because she said that's all they needed and we put rocks and one plant in them. Surprisingly my beta lived for a bit over 3 years. I've now had 3 hamsters at my dads house and my sister has had two and we've done soooo much research. My current Syrian hamster (Misty) is living in the IKEA Detolf with lots of toys and houses. I adopted her from a small pet store (not a chain one) and they treat their animals very nicely. I always say that it's so cruel to put an animal in horrible living conditions but I did the same to my Betta. Rip Georgie, I'm so sorry ❤😭

I am so glad I'm not the only pet store worker that understands these fish. I have worked with so many people that tell customers the exact opposite of what they're living conditions are actually proffered to be and people always come back up set because they're fish is sick or dead. The worst part is one of the people is a manager so people just assume he knows everything. Keep educating people as much as you can and encouraging them to do they're research. I take that part of my job seriously and I dont know how some people don't. I always do my research when I come across something unfamiliar because you cant always trust what others say 100% they may not know everything which can come across as a shock to some but were all human. Pixel Cat well Beta fish are not shy, beta's are actually just very territorial and this is the reason they don't work very well with other fish, and a lot of the time you can make a community tank involving like she said 1 Beta in a tank at a time, but this community only usually succeeds by slowly adding fish one or two at a time with the Beta helping it get I guess you could say a bit more comfortable with the fact other fish are in the tank with it, just don't add to many fish. However there are some fish that are absolutely not suitable to live with a beta, some of these fish being other beta fish and other territorial fish.

Gabe G They are shy, but some of them are more aggressive than others. The shyer ones will fight if they feel threatened, but chances are they will swim away and hide. Whenever I walk into a room, my beta of five months will always hide behind his massive plant. With most fish species they will fight, but if they are clearly outnumbered or outsized they will hide. I luv betta fish. My first betta was named Gillbert. He was dark blue and I loved him so much. Reagan Bowling That's amazing! Veiltails are gorgeous! I currently have three bettas, one of which is a platinum , elephant finned veiltail. His name is Platinum. Sooo original. I know. My Blue Crowntail is also called Blue if you were wondering. But I saved them all, from fin rot, Blue from Walmart, and Platinum and my aggressive female Huntress from Petco. Platinum's ventral fins were curled up and black from fin rot, and he had some bad tearing. It's good to know there are good betta owners that actually know what they are doing.

Oh no that’s normal!! people who work in the animal science and vet medicine industry (like myself, currently in vet school!) often refer to Bettas as puppy/kitten like fish, they genuinely enjoy playing with people, will often sleep on things, “lay down” and watch you or whoever is in the room, they’re very curious and sweet, some people even teach theirs tricks!!!! They all have wonderfully unique personalities and they truly have feelings, emotions and wants. Every morning I wake up both my Bettas come out from hiding to say hello, my one Raiden likes my finger (plus being pet to!) and the other enjoys staring at my face for some reason😂😂 & they both like when I sit down next to their tanks and do my work or play games they genuinely like hanging out/just being near you

If it weren't for my veiltail, Vitbi, I wouldn't have cared at all about fish and continue to avoid my chore of the once a month water change for my dad's 20 gallon community tank. It started when I went to a carnival, and unexpectedly ended up with four goldfish which people gave me after they had their fun walking around with it in a tiny bag and decided they didn't actually want to care for them. So I go home thinking that all they need is a bowl and a few flakes, but I checked online to make sure, and boy I'm glad I did (kind of)! I was in panic! Min. tank size is fifty gallons(FOR ONE FISH)! They need water changes! Proper diet! Maybe even a pond! Me going up to my dad and saying all this stuff like a madman..he didn't really buy it. "Why would she suddenly care about these fish when she didn't even care whether or not I fed them?" he probably thought. He believed in the common goldfish myths of them living in a bowl and living only a few days. No tank.. can't drive and I have no money.. just a crappy decorative vase my mom used to fill with candy at my sister's sweet sixteen. I decided that waking up every morning and afraid to find them dead, and the do an ineffective water change was too unbearable. My dad had suggested I put them in the tetra tank, but I said they produced ammonia which kills non goldfish (I used to think that only goldfish produced ammonia), so I decided to pour the little guys in there and hope for the best. Day by day, one would die. Before the end of the week that I had brought them home, they were all dead, proving the common few day lifespan goldfish myth. Fast forward a few months later at an event at church my mom tells me: they're raffling a betta fish and she got me some tickets if I want to try my luck. I put all of them in to the bag labeled as "fish." I remembered the horrible goldfish incident and almost immediately get my phone and do some research. Min. tank size: 2.5 gallons....fine then it'll do in that glass gallon jug it comes with. I decide I have yet to prove my dad wrong and actually raise a fish successfully. BOOM! I win the raffle! I immediately run up and get the jug and ask: where's the fish? (they had said that it was too cold for it to be in the jug for now). They point to the man who donated the jug and fish to the raffle. I ask again: "where's the fish?" He hands me a five dollar bill and gives me directions to the nearest pet store. Wow. I approach the bettas in their cups. All of them observe me and then would begin to cower in the corner of their cup when I looked directly at them....all except one: a dark purple fish who had been following me around from his cup. To this day I claim that he had chosen me and not the other way around. He stays in my room and I spent about 3 months fighting to get him in a proper tank. First time I ever cried over a fish (never mind one that wasn't even dead, but I felt for him like any owner would with a dog, cat, ect.) Now he greets me when I get back from another miserable day in 10th grade from his five gallon tank (he grew to be a bright purple and pink!) and I know the most I ever have about fish keeping, and I have yet to miss another water change for both the 20 gallon tank and 5 gallon. So glad someone knows what they're talking about! My boyfriend actually had a really weird betta fish. He had him in a 10 gallon aquarium with some mystery snails and shrimp. Thankfully, his betta didn't attack anything. However, the betta sat in the corner of the tank flaring his fins and challenging anything that came near him. We thought he might have felt threatened. Temporarily, we put him in approximately a 1 gallon tank and he got really active. A day later, we put him in a larger tank by himself and he went back to sitting in the corner, but with his fins down. We then put him back in the smaller tank and he became very active and alert. This seems to be the only situation where a betta actually seemed to thrive in a smaller environment. Weird.

I bought a Betta fish because I wanted to take it out of the tiny glass container it was living in. I thought I could give it a great summer by putting it in the fish pond where it could have a summer adventure. Sadly, it disappeared after the first week. I wasn't sure if the bigger fish ate it or it just died. Close to the end of September when it was getting cold, I pumped the pond out as part of annual maintenance and suddenly there was a bright blue Betta in the mud at the bottom. I could not believe it. The temperatures have been on the low side but he seemed fine. I've brought him inside for the winter. Now I have to follow the instructions on caring for him, until spring. I had thought I would only have him for the summer. I just wanted to liberate him. Now he owns me.

The betta was living at its finest to be honest. They are known to live in muddy creeks that become low in water. That's why you found it there, that's why you never spotted it with other fish because males are solitary. Sometimes real proper research is needed in oneself to confirm lies and truths. When I was buying two Bettas (for my two empty 5 gallon tanks) the petstore lady asked if I have ever had them before. I nodded and said I had them for 6 years and one lived 3 years. 😂 she was horrified when I said I had one for 3 years. She said well their not supposed to live that long and she asked me 50 question very angry. She was so angry when I told her I had one in a 5 gallon tank saying bettas hate big tanks and should be kept in tiny containers. Kathy H There are incidents where a fish can die from being moved out of terrible water conditions into good ones. Not saying it's ok to put them in tap water, or that they should stay in bad water conditions, but if they have lived that way for a long time, they should be moved gradually. Also, if you do complete water changes, it ruins the nitrate cycle they have going for them. When a fish is put into completely fresh water, it causes a nitrate spike which kills them. So, they should always have a bit of the water from before the water change mixed with the fresh water.

I miss my little Betta, Ronald! He was so active and friendly! he would greet me when I would come in the room (he swam to the front of the tank and would watch me). I kept him in a 20 gallon tank with a few cory cats and that little betta swam around every square inch of that tank. Not all divided tanks stress out the fish.i had a 30 gal divided in two with a black divider with small holes (I made it myself) and the only reason one killed the other was because he got smart and jumped into the other side I found my Halfmoon half dead and he ended up passing away but now my veil is happy in his big 30 gal! The Halfmoon had tissue and fin damage and the veil only has fin damage (happens November 19 2018 a recent loss of my Halfmoon I've had for 3 years)

A tip about if you do want to keep more than 1 betta fish at a time in 1 tank, get a larger tank. A good rule of thumb when keeping care for betta fish is 10 gallons of water per fish. Yes a smaller tank can house 1 fish easily, but 10 gallons is preferable for a happier life. If you want 2 fish get a tank that can keep 20 gallons or more, 3 fish =30 gallons (29?) and so forth. I adopted a betta fish and had him for 3 years. I fed him once a day and he was pretty easy to take care of. He did enjoy the bigger tank I got him after a few months. I cleaned his tank 1 a week because I didn't have a filter and used a few drops of tank conditioner. He grew to be one of my best friends as I named him Charley Blue. I think having a betta fish showed me that taking care of a living creature was a big responsibility even when as small as a fish. I HIGHLY recommend you to get one!

My beta fish story: So in 5th grade, my science teacher had many fishes and snails. to describe the teacher in little words, she looked like she lived in school and was very cranky and rude. she had at least 5 50 gallon tanks, and some fishbowls. Weirdly the snails were in the tanks and the fish, which were mostly beta fish, were in fish bowls. At the beginning of the year, she had 6 beta fish and at the end of the year, she had 0. One of the fish was not fed and ate 2 fish. And the rest of the fish died because she never cleaned or fed them. I wrote her a letter saying that the fish shouldn't be treated like that and that they deserve a proper home, she literally gave him to me the next day. My betta fish was beautiful and I named him Muvi. He died 1 year and a half later. I tried to care for him and I fed him his favorite meals, cleaned his tank every 2 weeks. I would buy plants for him, but because he was so mistreated before, he died. RIP Muvi

My betta lived in a 10 gallon with 2 snails to keep the algae down, he is 9 years old, and I eventually didn't have enough time to care for him. I ended up giving him to my local pet store for him to find a new owner. 😊 People, if you have a betta or looking into getting one, please note that they live for a long time. If you can no longer care for your betta or any fish, please do not flush them down the toilet or put them in your local stream. Give them to a friend or a pet store.

Betta fish can live up to SIX years in a healthy habitat, I have had one live up to seven years in a giant vase tank without any filter or heater when I was a kid. I'm ashamed to say we had a fish in that habitat for that long, but we did clean the tank constantly and fed it the best food available. But anyway, the point is habitat and food are everything. Betta fish are amazing, and it really upsets me that most of these beautiful resilient fish live their lives in these tiny cups on store shelves...

Alexa Swiatkowski it's so they can establish a pecking order. Having two fish to chase and squabble with means not one fish isn't taking the brunt from the more aggressive fish. If you have an even number then there is more chance for a fish to be singled out.

thank you for all those information. we have a male betta fish that was in a bowl for almost 4month... we had him right after we move in an apartment and he was with us for the whole time we spend time in that apartment thats why when he died it was really sad for us all coz he became part of the family. but now i understood that they dont live that long. now that we are in a house now, we got a 3gallon of tank and bought a new one. hope he'll live alot longer than the first one. they are just adorable.

I recently rescued my betta fish from a local Petsmart. He was fatigued (laying on the bottom of the cup) and had a bad case of fin and tail rot. His rotting is getting a bit better and he is currently in a 10gal tank, happy and healthy.

I am a pet store manager and I can't tell you how true this all is, except for me I don't find people are wanting to know everything, rather that myself and my staff try and make sure customers know everything because they're often clueless. I told a customer to go for something bigger than the tanks I have to keep them in (we display them in 2L tanks that I have to sell, but we clean them frequently and they're definitely bigger (up to 4x) that what I've seen them sold in, and this customer came back days late to make a complaint about me because she thought I'd talked her into more than she needed. I had told her the truth- that I personally think they should live in something bigger than what we display them in- and then I'm guessing the internet told her otherwise. a small tank you need to completely clean out every week, a properly filtered tank with more water you should rarely have to do that to. People also forget heating, these are not cold water fish. If you're house drops below a certain temperature, you need a heater. The amount of customers I get over winter saying their fish won't eat, is lethargic, or died... I wish people would stop using animals as an ornament instead of a living thing.

I don't work at a pet store but I try to make it a point to address people that seem interested in Bettas to find out what they plan to do. I've turned off a Mother with her (very demanding) son after telling her that Bettas need a filter, heater, plants (pref.) and a decently sized tank. She curled her nose at it and told her son no and left. I felt so relieved. I can't believe how uneducated people are and how readily many pet stores bind Bettas to a fate in a tiny bowl. I don't even understand why those "Betta bowls" and such exist, they shouldn't even be on the market. But I'm overall very disappointed with pet care here in USA. I'm from Europe and the minimum requirement for a hamster there is the same size as a rabbit cage here. I've wanted to buy a hamster but I fail to find anything that is even remotely adequate here (bunny cages have the bars too far apart, that's too dangerous for hammies that are just as liquid as cats are). The few times I've seen Bettas in a store in my home country they were in approx. 2-3 gallons by themselves.

People tend to buy fish for just decorations, especially Bettas because of their display in different colors, and wonder later on, why they died, when they're "sturdy fish." I own 3 Bettas, each on different 1 gallon tank with a filter and a heater on all three. I know it's not a big tank, but Walmart were making them just be on their own, dieing. I fell sorry for all three, and honestly, one of them was already gray and dull in color. I bought them, and each a tank and heater with the money I was going to use a console. And boy, am I glad I did that. They're all thriving, and the gray one had it's color back within 4 days, and is the most active swimmer. Bettas are intelligent fishes as well, and Everytime I come home from work, I go up to their tanks, all three swim up to me, and do a little "dance" flapping their tails. And I know they're happy, and full of life. I will be sad when they die naturally. They are hard to care for, but people don't realize, the work it is to take care of an animal...period.

This was a great video and it was great to hear these common myths addressed. I have had my bettas in small tanks when my living space was limited, however I always worried that my betta was basically bored in such small spaces. I recently adopted a new betta (years since I last had one), a small, female. Veiltail. At the store I put some serious thought into how big a tank I wanted to get her, and as luck had it there was a sale which allowed me to easily get a 3.5 gallon tank for her at $1 more than a 1.5 would have cost. It came with a filter, and the following day I purchased a small heater for her tank, plus she has lights. I do not regret any of it as she has been more active and seemingly happier (very zippy at least) than any betta I have ever cared for in the past. I can no longer imagine keeping a betta in smaller than a 3gal unless it was for a very temporary reason. Now that I have rambled: Thank you for posting this video addressing these myths. I have heard them tons of time and it is sad how many go by them.

Just so you're forewarned, I wrote a novel. XD @@desireeguzman6535 Most of the beneficial bacteria that keep tank water clean live in the filter media, not in open water. This is also why "just change the filter pad once a month and you're good" is a lie, though usually these things are said by well-meaning people who honestly don't know better. Pre-conditioned water, river/lake water (that misconception is out there too), and cycle-in-a-bottle products aren't going to be an insta-fix, and may do more harm than good. You might get lucky with that last one IF it's very new and has been stored properly, but don't count on it. I imagine the sales rep also wanted what's best for your fish, but - and I hate to sound cynical, but it happens - large corporations are generally run for profit, and you can get a lot more money out of someone who's buying new fish/filter cartridges/chemicals every few months than you can get out of someone who drops $300 on a high-quality habitat and then keeps their fish alive for years. I have no doubt that this has an effect on training and policy, though the people drafting them might not even realize that they're swayed, and the people on the sales floor know what they're told. ----- cycling advice below ----- "Cycling" a tank means growing a colony of beneficial bacteria of two kinds: ones that eat ammonia (fish waste) and make nitrites, and ones that eat nitrites and make nitrates. Ammonia and nitrites are super toxic to aquatic animals. Nitrates are toxic as well, but not NEARLY as much, and these can be removed easily with regular water changes (or aquaponics, but that's a whole venture in and of itself). My preferred cycling method (not because it's quick, easy, or fun, but because it does the least harm of the methods I've heard of) is to buy a liquid testing kit that matches whether your tank is freshwater or saltwater, get the tank, filter (replace disposable pads with permanent filter media, sold in bags or milk-like boxes), heater, and decorations set up without a fish, and go buy a bottle of ammonia. Not just ammonia-based household cleaners, since they have all kinds of other things mixed in to make them safer for humans, but just diluted ammonia. I've only ever found it at Ace Hardware, and it's in a very plain bottle. The bacteria that you're encouraging to grow are already in the air and water, just in very small amounts, so you don't have to buy anything special to get them started. Use a much tinier amount of ammonia than you would expect to bring the water's ammonia levels up to 4ppm (parts per million, as shown by that liquid testing kit I mentioned earlier). Test the water every 24 hours for both ammonia and nitrites, and add ammonia as needed to keep it at 4ppm. You'll eventually start seeing nitrites showing up. You can start testing for nitrates at this point, but if nobody's living in the tank yet, you can safely wait on this, since liquid nitrate tests will give you a workout that may have inspired the Shake Weight. Keeping dosing the ammonia to 4ppm each day. After a while, the nitrites will start to decrease, which means that the second kind of bacteria is getting established. Then you should definitely start testing for all 3 chemicals. Once the whole system stabilizes at 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites, and

Marc Geolingo Female bettas can be kept together just fine. It's just not fully recommended and often people would rather not take the risks of harming their fish because of how territorial they are. Though it can be done if you provide enough space and make sure you monitor them very closely.
