Getting a different species works most of the time. Its because bettas were bred for a long time to be "fighter fish" making most of them aggressive. Different species are much less likely to be aggressive since they were never bred to do so! Other than that, a densly planted tank, a tank at least 15 gallons in size, getting a female, plakat, and stalking the tank lightly. This all really helps raise your chances with domesticated bettas

Only advice I can give that wasn’t covered in the vid is to get a female betta Males are naturally territorial and were even bred to be more aggressive while females tend to be a lot more peaceful, though it’s important to remember that every betta is an individual with their own personality and even female bettas have the potential to be aggressive, even if it’s unlikely

The bigger and densely planted the tank, the betta (badum tsss). Bettas like space and plants, and the more territory you give them, the less likely they’ll be aggressive with tank mates. Try and avoid shrimp as tank mates, as bettas love to chomp on them for food. Females can be kept in “sororities” (multiple female bettas) with very little hassle, so if you want multiple betta that’s the best way to go.

Both my females did not like their tank mates (or each other) my first addition, Delilah, just tried to eat everything but soon realized that they weren’t food, so now she just inspects everything. My second betta, Blueberry, did NOT like the female betta or any of the other fish, so while she finished her quarantine, I added some shrimp for her to get used to, then I added her to a breeding box in the community tank, yes, she still tried to square up the fish and flared at everyone but after two-three days she calmed down completely and is now the perfect addition to the new tank. In my opinion, you just gotta give them time to realize that “fish are friends, not food”
@_AquaArt_
@_AquaArt_ 10 ай бұрын
Wait- so you put both females together? Betta fish can’t be together, unless it’s in a female society but even then you gotta have at least 8-10 of females in a densely planted, at least 35+ gal tank so they can make a hierarchy. Putting just two will cause them both to be super stressed. Making these betta societies are super hard and delicate. They mostly only work if they were raised together as siblings. Other than that introducing them together is super difficult. But I’m glad everything is good now!

I also do a little test where I put my finger to the glass, if they don't swim up then they're a more shy fish, if they start flaring or getting aggressive then it won't be good for tank mates, if it swims up but doesn't flare that shows they have a good temperament

So I find that some people who breed bettas do keep them together in such a way they can actually be with other bettas and even other males. You'd probably have to find a private breeder. I unfortunately have the cup bettas at our local pet store. I always found that the ones who look quite depressed (inattentive even when you touch and pick up the cup) are far more mellow than any actively swimming around in the cup. I normally pick those less active bettas anyway as a way to rehabilitate them. I had a betta I kept for 3 years before he passed that was basically a cat stuck in a fish body. He rather than wait for me to finish sprinkling pellets would attempt to jump out of the tank. He enjoyed chasing my finger along the glass and I even taught him to play around with a ball at the surface of his tank.

We're lucky in the UK, a lot of fish stores keep male Bettas in larger tanks with other fish, so you generally know they're ok with other fish. Even if they're kept alone they're in bigger spaces than the cups they're in in the US..

I had a Betta (Clark) with 2 platies (flare & mustache) but at the time Clark was 7 years old. He was quite friendly compared to other bettas I’ve had in the past but his favorite thing to do was to sit on his best friend (Kermit the African dwarf frog). Over food and such I fed them in 2 locations. The platies stuck to some natural rocks and the others near a lily I had in the tank. I don’t know how they all got along but up until Clark and Kermit’s deaths they remained peaceful.

My LFS doesn’t sell Bettas in cups, they buy them in young and put them straight into a community tank with other fish. Over the decades I’ve had 5 Bettas from there, and they’ve always been super peaceful, even if I go for the super active ones! I think they do have a more territorial nature, but nurture is super important too.

My betta when I initially got him was quite aggressive for a few days, this was an already well matured tank he had been put into with only ottos corydoras and endler guppies. He had no issue with the ottos and I don’t think he even knew the corys were there but the endlers with their brighter colours and darting behaviour I think stressed him out initially. A few days later and they’re all friends the guppies know not to bother him and give him a wide berth and he just goes on his way. It’s been four months now and he’s grown into a pretty cool looking galaxy betta

Oh also! For those who don't know, the tank was already set up with tank mates for a reason. It's easier to introduce a betta to an already established community because territories are already figured out, and the betta will find a territory within established parameters. If you have a tank with a betta first and THEN introduce fish, the betta already sees the tank as his whole territory and it will be a lot more stressful for everyone involved as they try to find a way to re-establish territory. There's a higher chance that your betta will eat the newly introduced fish

As a teen I was really into fish keeping and i had this big beautiful greyish-purple plakat with yellow fins. Loved him to pieces! I cohabbed him in a tank with a small school of Otocinclus in it, and all seemed fine. It was a pretty tall tank where he'd stick to the top, and the otos stuck to the bottom. I never saw any conflict between them. That is, until I woke up one morning and he'd murdered every single one of them. Needless to say, he didn't get to cohab with anything other than snails after that. He eventually developed dropsy and, despite all my efforts to help him, he sadly passed away 💔 RIP lil buddy, you were a little murderous but I still loved your spirit.

My betta is ready to throw fist every time he sees his own reflection in the tank glass. That same betta, just accepts fish after fish as his new subjects. Unfortunately I had an issue with a khuli disappearing during a water change, & my betta preceded to search of off the khuli’s hiding spots looking for him days after. He’s since stopped. He just seems to enjoy watching his tank mates & looking for food in his duckweed. So far he’s had Guppies, Khuli, Cory, Blue & Crystal Shrimp, & Thai Micro Crab tank mates. He gave up on hunting Shrimp after he couldn’t get the biggest one down. He was really trying to eat it whole & alive. He’s super chill for a betta. He’s a halfmoon dumbo.

Tetras usually turn nippy when they’re stressed or there aren’t enough of them together; keeping a large group keeps any aggression focused on each other Neon tetras are otherwise very peaceful but I’d still suggest keeping an eye on them, as even if they don’t nip the betta they may still outcompete them for food Guppies are best avoided as their long flowy fins get mistaken for rivals and lead to aggression, and they might even end up nipping at bettas for the same reason Imo the best tankmates for bettas would be peaceful bottom dwellers like corydoras and loaches loaches, which keep to themselves at the bottom of the tank and are usually ignored by other fish

I made sure to have a test run to observe Zuko's reactions to the tetras and vice versa. I had an extra tank to separate them if ever they don't get along. So after days of observing them together, I saw they're peaceful with each other. They lived like that for how many months. Until one day I found all the tetras floating and their stomach ripped apart. I'm suspicious of Zuko because I can't think of anything that will cause that. 😅

Wait- so you put both bettas together? Betta fish can’t be together, unless it’s in a female society but even then you gotta have at least 8-10 of females in a densely planted, at least 35+ gal tank so they can make a hierarchy. Putting just two will cause them both to be super stressed. Making these betta societies are super hard and delicate. They mostly only work if they were raised together as siblings. Other than that introducing them together is super difficult.

Had a female beta that can typically live in a sorority or community tank and she ate my khuli loaches like noodles. 😢 Was a 55 gallon planted tank sometimes they are just Uber territorial.

I used a 10 gallon tank for two types of tetras, snails, shrimp, and a beta. They did great! Until the beta are the shrimp…

I had a betta with corydoras, endlers, and a bluefin killifish. He was always quite peaceful and only had problems when l tried to introduce a female betta. I think I just got lucky

ive only been gettin females because i prefer the short fins and nobody sells the wild ones that werent selectively bred siamese fighters… always have been very peaceful, even with a guppy, but ive always carefully picked fish that have very muted colors, the only colorful thing in there woth my current bb is the chilli rasboras, the tank is also pretty large. I hate fishbowls. its very colorful and shes pretty popular in my family which definitely helps hold my sanity together when my mom wanted to grab baby discuses and put them in ten gallon tanks when i first started the hobby

Mollies and platys can be with bettas just as well as bottom dwellers or guppies its how you set your tank up and it depends on how many fish you are adding to what size of tank. Bettas don’t do well with fish like tiger barbs or ciclids cause they’re fin nippers. Danios , tetras , mollies , platys any community fish can be good with bettas dont listen to the media hyping up betta aggression i have 2 community tanks all thriving realistically any fast swimming dominant fish you wanna avoid cause bettas are also dominate

I used to own a lot of bettas and other kinds of aquatic animals. For me one male, and an odd number of females (3,5,7+). Of course do some research to provide the right tank size… don’t need females fighting for space also for the females, make sure their colors are not brighter than the male. This is if you want only bettas. Side note: if possible breeding is a concern just make sure to take out the bubble nest when feeding or cleaning. Side, side note: some good fish to have with bettas are Cory Catfish, Kuhli Loaches and Snails. Careful of the Snails, they will breed like crazy.

I wanted a betta who might eat some endler fry...instead I've got the reincarnation of a Buddhist monk who likes to watch the funny little fishies swim around him. It's ridiculous. The endler fry is fascinated by him and they keep checking him out, he just does not care at all.

I have had 2 Betas. One passed because I didn’t know how to properly care for them (Which I am still guilty of) and he froze to death because I didn’t have a heater. RIP bubbles. My second one died for unknown reasons. He was a well cared for fish, with all of the proper equipment but he could of died of: Overfeeding Sickness Toxicity in the water RIP Finley, They we’re good fish. Finley was navy with gold fins, and Bubnles was see-through with a pinkish tinge

i eventually want to get some tetras for my betta but i don’t know how my betta will react to them, my betta has a snail as a tank mate and loves the snail so i think this is a good sign, and i heard that light colored bettas are more submissive and dark colored bettas are more dominant (and aggressive) and my betta is all white so hopefully this means he will be able to cohabitate!
