Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! If you've ever been lost in the woods, you'll wish you'd paid attention. I learned all this back in the 70's while in the real boyscouts. I was an Eagle Scout. You cannot rely on your compass if you put it on a rock or if its close to a metal object, knife, gun, zipper, necklace, ring, etc. While hunting I've been turned around more than once. This knowledge let me get back to camp or close to it every time. Thanks for all You Do! Once again Good Video!👍👍👍 God Bless!

I am glad you are going to get your son full time. as a father, I know how important it is to spend time with your kid. my son is now 23 years old, and we still try to spend as much time in the woods together as we can. he's really grown into a good young man. I believe the woods time is in part has helped our friendship. not only are you giving him skills he can use for ever, you are building his memories of good times with Dad. excellent job.

I've watched all your videos for years. But it's great for you to do these for multiple reasons. ALWAYS good to have a quick refreshers and also for the new people just getting into it, where you can direct them to your more in depth videos. The two most difficult things to engrain into my mind are the map, compass, and ranger beads while traversing up and down steep terrains. And the second is learning the knots... Even though I was taught them both at a young age in boy scouts, the teachers never clicked with my style of learning. I do understand your style of teaching....as crazy as that may seem. Everyone learns differently. And I am so happy that you will now have your son with you and away from the left west coast! Absolutely OUTSTANDING AF! CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm always amazed at the stories of people who go hiking out in the wild without carrying even a very basic compass. And then they literally lose their bearings and can't regain them. And that's when it becomes a game of life or death that many tragically lose.

Great news on your son. I don't know if he's going to follow in your footsteps (figuratively speaking) but he's going to be a well-trained young man. A great asset for any team. This was another tutorial and more notes to write in my composition book of Corporals Corner lessons. I was just out this morning practicing using my Suunto MC2 and the Ranger beads. Besides the colorful (bright orange) way point marker, I carry a small roll of aluminum foil streamer that I use in my garden; supposedly to scare birds away, keep them from eating newly planted seeds. The foil glistens and helps when I do the 90 degree traversing around a lake or other obstacle and I don't want to return to retrieve the way marker. If one direction is a bust I use the foil markers to return to my original position. Although it adds weight to my pack I like carrying either a monocular telescope or a small pair of binoculars. What?! No bacon in this video? For my breakfast I made bacon in flour tortilla wraps with strawberry jam from those Denny's packets.

Our bush is thick so we often count box side-steps too. And, if leapfrogging often the moving person can go right past the landmarker if that person has an azimuth ready to guide them back on track. Gives more options for moving through rough ground. Though, last landnav course I wore neutral colors and had a camo backpack so was hard for my partner to see. Next time I'll carry something blaze orange.
