Back in 1989 or '90...we we're going into the field (Camp Pendleton) for 4 or 5 days and knew it'd rain. So we bought a bunch of cans of Scotchguard..and sprayed our shelter halves, 2 or 3 coats....worked like a charm! Water beaded up 'n rolled off. USMC, 1/4, wpns co., 81s plt, 1988-92

When I left the military, I left with all my ALICE equipment (ruck, LBE, canteens, ammo pouches, field dressing, butt pack, and even a gas mask) plus a bunch of small items like the entrenching tool, k-pot, etc. A couple years later I got a tax refund and on the check was a deduction for $150.00. I got charged for all the gear I never returned. The best $150 I ever spent, lol.

LOL, as I read your entry I was gonna say they’d get round to it. I was a Marine rigger. I controlled a lot of expensive and highly desirable gear like the brown leather jackets with fur collars. We kept a close eye on those I didn’t want to end up paying for any unaccounted. One alone could cost upwards of $300. Semper Fi Sarge Out….

Very good video. I was a medic at Ft Stewart and I would go to the field constantly with Charlie company. I was lucky. I drove the M113 ambulance and slept inside on a litter. No shelter half for me. The grunts used to say I slept in a hotel. Great bunch of guys, they took care of their medic. Plus, I was in at the tail-end of C rations which came in a little brown box. The food was in cans. So, in the winter, I would heat up my franks and beans on the M113 exhaust pipe. Nicely heated through but the can was as black as coal from the diesel smoke! Hardcore. Those were the best of times. I have a million stories.

About the trench,I was taught to use the lose dirt to create a berm on the inside perimeter by packing it down. Also,find the lowest level of the area and extend the trench away from the tent by at least 5-6 feet so water drains away and doesn’t pool up. Maybe I’m wrong,but have always done it that way.
@DisgruntledMarineTheGrunt
@DisgruntledMarineTheGrunt 2 жыл бұрын
As long as the canvas over shoots the edge of the trench for the most part it's fine, he even said this, and yes you're supposed to extend the trench at the lowest point for drainage.

A "military nostalgia" overnighter, outstanding AF! "Pre-nostalgia" would have involved C-rats...not as big a "menu," but there was always a handful of P-38s, the accessory packs came with a 4-pack of cigarettes and the peanut butter tins were often converted to ashtrays. The damp-proof matches were pretty good, and little stoves were made out of the big cans. The tiny Tabasco bottles were treasure, but near civilization things like herbs and spices could make C-rats pretty tasty. BYOB (bring your own bacon), though...it went well wrapped around the beef patties. Thank you, Corporal, for becoming part of my Sunday routine, and, as always, "rock it like a Corporal!" Edit: what flavor of bug juice did you get?

This reminds me of the military surplus wall tents we had in boy scouts in the early 1960s. The kids had to pick up these heavy canvas tents and those huge wooden poles. These things were nightmares for 12 year olds. The scout leaders were all wwii veterans and these tents and uniforms triggered something in them, and they expected a lot from us. It was both a privilege and a pain to have them around.

Back in the late 1970s I was working for the Army as a civilian at the Natick Labs where they were developing the process to make MRES and developing the process to use Radiation to preserve meats and such to be packaged into the meals. We would ship a machine to a meat company as part of the design process every few months so they could process some for sampling by GIs. The Lab also had test chambers that would simulate both Arctic and Dessert conditions for testing uniforms and accommodations for survival. We were also developing equipment to be used for combat by retrofitting existing equipment with newer weapons.Just to give you an idea how “C” rations got replaced. Thanks for another great video. If my memory serves me the soldiers used their ponchos to make each half and slept opposite head to toe to use the space correctly. Even family tent camping we always dug rain trenches around our JC Higgins canvas tents.

I carried a WW2 era entrenching tool as the handle was so much more comfortable. I've eaten MREs from 2016 with no problem. I still have LRRP rations from the 80s because that's what we ate as well as the old MCI meals and yes we carried tobasco sauce. I carried a sprinkle holder that had multiple compartments so it had salt,pepper, season-all, onion powder, and garlic powder.

when I was in the army we were told not to use the e-tool as a hammer because metal on metal 3 times is signal for gas/biologial attack.

Just got back in the door from my three day with my dad. Have to brag on your rapid ridgeline because it was a lifesaver when it began raining buckets the moment we rolled into camp. Had bags hung and a tarp framed over us in 5 mins. Excited to watch today's vid (and here's to Chili Mac! Enjoyed it twice this weekend myself). Outstanding AF as always Corporal 👍🔥

Ahh. The good ole days. Carrying around the shelter half. Back before battle buddies. You never knew who was gonna be on his half. As usual, you instructed perfectly how to set up the shelter half.

Hey dude, I just saw your rant on this video I’m watching where people are messing with you, particularly other bush crafters. I just want you to know, we hear you, but it doesn’t deserve the attention you just gave it. I am military too, and I could tell a true veteran or a poser almost every time. You are no poser. Maybe a little high and tight, but no poser lol. We enjoy you, they don’t matter. We do. We love you man. Keep it ripping brother.

You convinced me to go camping again after many years of being out of conscription. I have the same kind of shelter you and me had, but I have never tested it. Just as well that I have a couple free days to test it out. Oh, and a little land navigation course is a good thing to brush up on when you haven't used those skills in a while. Great video and a good teacher.

There is one guy on the internet who doesnt care about the MRE date. All he cares about is getting it out onto a tray, nice.

Old skool is alright with me. I k ow that smell. I still have a shelter half in the garage. Your skills lessons are always spot on. You can never get enough refresher time for navigation and the basics. I saw this episode in the car. I had to pause a lot. That makes it worthy of a second watch for sure. Then let Corporal's Corner run all afternoon in the background as I clean house.

Outstanding AF! You are the first KZbinr to show the rain trench! I learned it years ago with tipi's at music festivals, it saved me having a cold and wet weekend! And many other people appreciated it too! I get so much knowledge from this channel, keep doing what you're doing!

Lay the entrenching tool flat on the ground. Put a fuel source (trioxane or C4 or fuel tabs, sticks and twigs etc.) In the middle of the triangular handle, light it and put your canteen with water in it over the flame and heat up water to heat up your MRE, ramen, shaving/hygiene, coffee...hot water in the field was awesome (I was in before the MRE heaters). Digging a small void for a fire or the fuel tabs helps. Semper Fi Brother!

Former army food inspector here. Yes that is an actual MOS, look up 68R. We would inspect various parts of the military food system of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corp. Of that food system, we would inspect and believe it or not, extend the shelf life of MRE's. The little red bullseye in the outside container is the time temperature indicator (TTI). When the MRE reaches it's shelf life we would first look at the TTI and if that little dot in the middle was black, look no further, throw that junk out. If it was still red, then we would take a sample size of the whole lot and inspect each individual component. We would extend the shelf life from anywhere between 6 months to a year. I figured I'd write this out in case anyone was curious.

🤔 I can’t lie I miss my Molly gear. I also miss my M16A2 ( don’t miss the tent that thing was bull💩). Doing all that woodsy-stuff / bivouacking was definitely good times. I was doing I loved to do and getting paid for it. Now I have much better gear but I can say I earned that expensive stuff because I learned the hard way. And you’re correct you never forget the smell of the tent ( or the tuna MRE 😂 ). Thanks for the video, I wish you success with your KZbin endeavors.

The standard issue pup is my go-to for solo camping to this day, used it during 90% of my Military career, even after the we were issued the new tent systems were issued. I'm surprised you left a few things out to make the pup even more comfortable. The standard Issue Bug net was designed for the pup as well as the cot. The poncho I cant remember Atm if its one or two but is designed to act as the floor of the pup as well. According to the FM for the pup Otter wax should be used on the pup to waterproof it thus preventing the seepage you spoke about. The military version of the Colman 502 with heatdrum turns it into a hot tent for winter use. The pup has a host of simple modifications to make it even more comfortable. Such as modding an extra set of poles to become a cross bar for hanging lights and more. Or along those lines braided 550 stretched across the two uprites for the same outcome. Theres a host of others

Corporal, I just wanted you to know that I teach a Survival Skills class through the bible at my church every semester for the last 3 years and I recommend your site as one of the go to sites for the parents and the kids taking the class. I especially recommend the knots videos and the rest of your site. I have actually seen some of my students with your gear. Keep up the good work, God is watching out for you.

I've got every bit of that gear and more jammed into my office closet. I bought it all when I got out in '92. Now after this, I have to pull it all out and use it again. All my high tech gear will be pissed...but I'll get to relive that smell! Thanks for that...SUBSCRIBED.
