I’ve been avidly watching your videos for the last few months and you’ve taught and inspired me so much. I’m an older beginner and just started uni at the age of 41, studying for an art history degree. For one of my assignments I had to create a piece of art for an exhibition - which frightened the life out of me - I wanted to study art not ‘do’ art. But through encouragement from my lecturer, and your fabulous videos, I’m now enjoying creating my own art at home and I’m absolutely loving it. Thank you so much.

I have always painted or colored. As a child an older sibling convinced me that I was not "allowed" to be artistic. This was another sibling's activity and our parents were not going to be able to "support" me doing it too. Last October my youngest sister and I spent four days on the coast doing art and really connecting through it. She was surprised to find out I painted and why she didn't know. We now share art in a new light and it means so much to be "enabled" to enjoy art. This video spoke volumes to me, for me. I am 55 and I paint.

Oh yes, #5. I started really getting serious in my 40s and I have stumbled around for a decade until I finally decided to make this happen. We are our own worst stumbling blocks sometimes. Thank you for inspiring me!

True. Every human being has a creative capacity to make the world a more beautiful place. No matter the field they can make it an art. To be in love with what you do is an art. To love it enough to work really hard and explore it deeply is the bedrock of creativity. We can all make art. Talent is not what makes an artist. Determination is.

As usual such great advice Louise! Something you once said really stuck with me. You said what if everyday a fabulous masterpiece was just delivered to your door. Is that really what you want? That made me realize how much enjoying the process was the most important thing. Thank you!! You are a fantastic teacher

And thank you for number 4. I’m 38, I’ve just stop with my side hustle job to paint more (as a hobby but with the hope one day I can be an artist). So I made the choice to keep my comfy day job so my free time is dedicated to paint (and my family). It’s so nice to hear the stories of late bloomer. Did you already make a video about your journey as an artist ? I would love to hear your full story.

It's not either or - talent or hard work, but both. I could do 10,000 hours of practice on the cello and I still wouldn't be able to play well. You need some innate ability and a lot of passion to do the work required. Thanks for all you share so generously.
@ThisPaintingLife

I do not believe that self-expression requires innate talent. I think it requires a drive to do it, which lots of people don't have, but almost anyone can express themselves in paint just as almost anyone can talk. It's not like being a basketball star, which of course requires innate talent as well as hard work - we all have the ability to express ourselves although some may find it easier and more natural than others. I've taught thousands of people to paint so I feel confident in this :)
