I just got a Katana gen 3 head a week ago. I got the regular head instead of the artist version because I wanted the built-in speaker so I could have a portable amp to take with me on road trips. I’m on a road trip right now and I’ve been playing my electric and acoustic guitar through the head with the built in speaker in the hotel. It sounds surprisingly good. When I’m back home, I can plug the head into a regular speaker cabinet to get the best tone out of it. I got the Bluetooth accessory which allows me to stream audio into the amp and customize amp settings from my phone. It’s really flexible and a lot of fun to play with. I really like the push mode on this amp line. I have an Axe-FX 3 and FM9 which I also like a lot. The Katana is another great option. As far as equipment is concerned, this is a great time to be a guitarist!

Hey there Leon. I'm looking to upgrade from my 80s-00s rack gear and tube amp heads into a more modern rig. The thing is I've always stayed away from practice amp sort of stuff because it seems like a dead end relative to just getting a more portable gigging rig and using that to practice. The thing is you've proven that these new Katanas sound great. The problem is it's very easy to go up the chain and get the top end Katana stuff, but I feel like a lot of that money spent on a Katana could be put into a used Axe FX/Kemper/Seymour Duncan Powerstage/FRFR speaker system for a more modern rig that's also highly portable (my old 90s rack is on casters). The logic here is while the used Axe stuff may be a few years old and cost more up front than the Katana the Axe can do more. And often the upgrades between each generation are incremental. Also, if you gig through the stuff you practice through you're probably going to be more confident than if your practice rig differs from your gigging rig. Any advice? Your thoughts are much appreciated. I especially liked your videos on old rack gear from the 80s/90s like the Mesa Boogie Triaxis that was popular when I started playing in the mid 90s. There might have been an ADA MP-1 and a Marshall JMP-1 or something in there too from back in the day. Classic stuff. I'd still use it because I know that gear but I have no clue who would fix it if it broke down. Pretty much everything on the used market is probably decades old and heavily gigged. Cheers!

Bought the Gen 3 Head when it became available end of June as my 1st dive into amp head. Have no regretted it since. I don't even have a cabinet yet but it already seems to have a million different uses. I mostly use it as a practice amp with the 5 inch speaker and sometimes with headphones. The idea was to having something where I'm not on my computer all the time. Love the videos. I find I get more insight and ideas on how to get even more out of this amp.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, and say thank you LT! For making the time to put out great product demo videos. Good on ya mate, and God bless!
🙏 love these little tips, since my spark died, I can't decide...the gen 3 or the gen 2 ex, for a slightly cheaper (sale) price ? To be honest Leon I get a kick just from researching product spec's a full week before purchasing 🤣keeps my hype and inspiration high.

Prob the best bang for your buck amp around but to my ears( i see one used every sunday at a gig i regularly attend) , they lack the openness of valve amps. Guess its in the set up, you are getting some tasty tones!

How does it feel to play when compared to a tube amp? Is it drastically different or negligible? Thank you for these videos on Gen III. I am considering ditching my blues jr and pedal board in favor of an all in one like the Katana.

I’m still most excited for the Bluetooth editor option. It’s worth the price of the dongle to be able to adjust my global Eq for live performances or to tune it to the room without needing a computer and cable! I love my mkII 112 it seriously does everything i need it to especially with 2 foot controllers .

Here's a tip... DO NOT use this amp live until you connect it to a computer and download patches from somebody that spent a significant amount of time tweaking settings, preferably a MIT graduate who minored in Music Engineering (read:Tom Scholz?). I got the most hideous requests from my band mates last night, from "thicken it up" and "turn it up" to my favorite, "sounded like a drowning cat". This was at a weekly gig in a pub where the set list ranges from Midnight Hour to Red House, Roadhouse and beyond. I just need a simple pushed tube tone with a little reverb and maybe an occasional delay mod. I was using a Swamp Ash PRS (new X-mas gift from Wife) and a Boss GT-1 efx box. (Yes, the Boss was set to Combo Amp output). I get hired because I am a capable gigging guitarist, I don't get hired when I make gear mistakes like this. Fortunately, it being the Saturday before Christmas, the crowd was fairly light and drunk, so no problems there, but I got no confidence moving forward with this amp in a live setting. I bought the additional $150 floor controller, which can ONLY manipulate the settings that you programmed in earlier. The presets for that are garage band central and unusable live. I then figured I would use the smart phone app to last minute dial in some tone, only to find that you also have to buy a separate Bluetooth Module to connect to the amp. In total, that is why the amp was "affordable". It is an additional $200+ to get it stage ready. It is like buying a car with parts missing. Sorry for the rant and I LOVE this channel and benefit incredibly from your awesome videos. You have bailed me out on gear solutions for a long time now. I think that this is kind of a LE version of an amp and should be relegated to the bedrooms of folks that do not have a multi efx processor with a headphone jack. Is there anyway that you could make some of your killer presets available for us to download?

So you can't "update" a MKII to the features on the MKIII? Gotta buy a whole new head? Bloody disposable amps... I suppose one day it will make a good door stop
