What a great video on petunias! We've had spectacular success with the Supertunia series, especially following a regime as you outlined. Over the past few years I've been dabbling in starting petunias from seed and have had the most success with the Wave series. I plant too many to justify buying potted plants. This is the year they will all get drip run to them and after watching your video, I'm going to add a reminder to my calendar to fertilize weekly and fingers crossed it'll be the most colorful year yet!

Wonderfully informative video..no obnoxious music and to the point. I’m north Texas, and last summer was way too long, with record-breaking heat for weeks on end. I drastically trimmed my potted petunias quite a few times and used a weak solution of fertilizer almost every time I watered. Had to water sometimes twice a day, if the pot felt very light. Thanks for such a pleasant video.

I've had really good success with wave petunias of many sorts. If you search the "Healing waters" combo seed, it's one of my favorites. Super easy to grow functional hanging baskets with almost a single seed. This year I'm doing those, as well as wave, easy wave, tidal wave, and shock wave.

I grew supertunia vista bubble gum last year. One tiny plant in each very big pot. They grew very large and filled the pots. I loved them, didn't need to deadhead them. I live in brutal dry heat. I had to water them twice a day but I only fertilized them once per week with Proven Winners water soluble fertilizer. They did exceptional. I did also grow seed Petunias in other pots and they didn't do well at all and stayed tiny. The supertunias were well worth the $9.99 per plant.

You brought up something very important that’s been my experience more than once. I bought what I thought was one plant and upon up potting or putting in the ground I have several rooted cuttings in the pot. Even with shrubs. I recently bought 3 miniature roses at Walmart and each pot had 4 very well rooted cuttings. So now I have 12 potted mini roses. Same thing with a First Editions 2.5 gallon Crape Myrtle there were 3 and Proven Winners pint Rose of Sharon there were 2 in two pots. As you mentioned here an 8” pot of Petunias could be harboring a couple extras. Keep an eye out when shopping and when planting, you may find some bonus plants. Thank you for a great informative video!

I ❤️🩷❤️ Supertunias! You almost can’t go wrong with those beauties. This year, I also bought two “regular” pink petunias. They were each in their own hanging basket. I would prune them and water them nearly every day (and fertilize weekly), yet despite my care and attention, they would start fading and didn’t seem happy. So I transplanted them together in a plastic window box I had in my garage. I also took them out of the 6 hour daily sun spot and placed the window box on our patio which faces east and only gets morning sun. They let me know by the very next day how happy they were in their new home and location. 🌸🌸🌸 I often call myself an intuitive gardener. I tend to learn as I go, because oftentimes experience and common sense go a long way in gardening. But I’ve also learned a lot from great channels like yours and others. 😊🙌

I found one at farmers market after researching online. I really wanted three plants but being hotter than usual, at that price point, plus shipping it just seemed too ridiculous . I was surprised to find one local and even though it wasn’t thriving I bought one anyway. It’s struggling. Very fragile compared to a Supertunia. I didn’t think about the lighting I have in the area I planted these glow in the dark petunias. They glow in the dark…so I’ve not seen this cool glowing feature. I even brought it inside in a pitch black room before planting. I saw maybe a hint of glow? Or I just pretended so I didn’t feel so bad about spending $60 for a plant. Petunias & Moonflowers are two plants I will not live a summer without. Thanks for your post🌸

@UpNorthGardenMI10 ай бұрын
So the humidity is probably more of an issue than the heat. Thanks for sharing that tidbit... every region has little climate variables that can have such a big impact. If you are able to keep the moisture right, do they do okay... or do they tend to always peter out in the humidity for you?

I always grow vistas every year. I fertilized once at planting only and always had beautiful full flowering petunias all summer into fall. Last year I followed your advice bought 3 Supertunias, a liquid fertilizer and watered it with fertilizer everday half the strength each time deadheaded religiously and to my surprise not only did I have the saddest and most sparsely display of blooms but one of my plants just petered out completely mid to late summer.😢. Now I’m going to chop it up to perhaps a sick bunch of supertunias but I was completely bummed because I always loved the hummingbird action and although I had a few stop by I didn’t have the normal massive gathering of hummingbirds. But never fear I’m trying again because I love Petunias. ❤

I grow my petunias from seed. They can take forever to germinate, so I winter sow them to get a jump on the season. There is a wider selection for a lower price when they are grown from seed. One way to keep your petunias producing is to be very proactive about dead-heading. Also, give them a hard pruning mid-season to keep those blooms coming and keep them nice and bushy. I use both a liquid and slow release fertilizer as well.

I thought that the nitrogen or whatever the plant really loves, seeps out of the plant if it has more than it needs, and that's what attracts the aphids...maybe I am wrong.@@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI10 ай бұрын
@@Blake.Cooper I found a study from the University of California that says extremely high nitrogen can encourage aphid reproduction (most of the the bloom-boosters are high phosphorus). So over-fertilizing could contribute, but I think most of the time with bugs, some years are just worse than others. If you were waaaaay over-fertilizing, you could cut back; but once a week should get the job done without adverse effects. You'll have to report back... or if you're feeling adventurous, you could fertilize one container a lot more than any others and see what happens.

Miracle grow is good for Putunias in mix it with water the is ok right that the problem I have live in a condo the side they are on they get sunlight but bye 100pm there is shade from my condo so maybe should move them to more sunlight and try that nice video I try move them to more sunlight
@UpNorthGardenMI7 ай бұрын
They will usually bloom more with more sunlight. In the future, you could try some plants in that spot that require a little less light like begonias or New Guinea impatiens.

I live in the NW; I have almost given up on petunias because of the budworms. Have used the spray but not once a week. I will try again this spring. I love the baskets but have been discouraged by these worms eating the flowers and end up with leggy green vines and little flowers

Good luck! They're not a big problem near me, but I've had several people tell me how ruthless they can be. :(

If the plants are still alive, you could trim back any damaged area and give them fertilizer more often. Expect it to take a few weeks to bounce back. If it has mostly died off, I'd start over.

I'm in the UK and have my petunias in the flower bed rather than containers, and it rains fairly often. If it doesn't rain obviously I water them daily. Do I still need to fertilise them often? At the moment they just have the slow release Miracle Gro pellets and I was planning on repeating that every 6 months as per the pack instructions.
@UpNorthGardenMI5 ай бұрын
If your temps are between 12-21 Celsius, the time release will help (above that and it probably won’t last as long as stated on the package). I find I get a lot more growth when I also use the water-soluble. If you’re happy with how they’re growing, then I wouldn’t change anything. If they’re not performing, I’d try the water-soluble. Note that the variety of petunia is important to consider as well - there are a lot of compact varieties on the market.

@@UpNorthGardenMI you're a star, thank you so much. I'll add a bit of liquid fertiliser just for the petunias and see if it makes them grow a little more - they haven't got as big or as flowery as others' that I've seen but they look healthy. Thanks again, great video by the way.

I'm just trying the new Firefly petunia so the information here is invaluable--thank you! While a smaller petunia (8-10"), I'll give it more legroom than I think it'll need as I tend to feed. A lot. Constantly.

@UpNorthGardenMI7 ай бұрын
I haven’t grown those two, so no specific info. I will say that any time you have doubles, you may have to keep an eye on the spent blooms… some “bury their dead” and are easy while others can drop damp blooms that could cause a problem in some conditions.

Actually petunias like a low phosphorus number so bloom boosters are high in the middle number
@UpNorthGardenMI10 ай бұрын
We use Jack's petunia food early in the season when the plants are young... but switch to the regular bloom-booster so we're using the same fertilizer on all the annuals (makes it easier both for watering as well as explaining to customers). The petunias don't seem to mind the extra phosphorus at that point. Thanks for the comment :)
@maynardgreenhouse10 ай бұрын
@@UpNorthGardenMI true it does get tough to change out feed for different varieties. We switch back and forth from 20-20-20 to 15-0-15 every other feeding. I also started to add nutricote in every pot. It’s time consuming but it makes a huge difference. Thanks for the reply. Love your channel

Officially propagation is prohibited of Proven Winners plants (and many other patented plants from other companies).

Very informative! I've had tremendous success with my purple wave petunias! I'm extremely diligent when it comes to removing the blooms when they're spent, so I think that helps. I have yet to grow one of those massive baskets, but I'll keep on trying. I collect the seeds and grow them again each year without having to shell out all that cash at the box stores😊. Now my cup runneth over with them so I pass them on to friends and neighbors alike. Here in Maryland, the Summer heat and humidity gets unbearable. But these Wave Petunias thrive as long as I keep them well watered. They've also been surprisingly tolerant of the temperature drops in the fall and continuously bloom til I pull them up at the end of October. I'm gonna subscribe in hopes that you can help me achieve the stunning trailing variety hanging basket of my dreams.
@UpNorthGardenMI7 ай бұрын
Sounds like you’re on the right track with your Waves. Have you been fertilizing with water-soluble fertilizer once a week?
@CharronOliver7 ай бұрын
@UpNorthGardenMI yes, I do fertilize with Miracle-Gro but only about twice a month. I'll bump it up to every week. I think you may be right about over crowding without too many plants though so I'll reduce the number I put in each pot. I gave one tiny Petunia to my neighbor and watched as her one plant grew to be twice the size of my window box that had 6. So less IS more!

@PixieDust1208 What varieties are you growing? Most of the newer varieties hold up much better (Supertunia, Headliner, SuperCal). Petchoas are especially strong. Also varieties with smaller flowers are often better in rain.
