I love growing petunias from seed and they are so much easier than many would think! I love the Wave Petunias and start them each year, I try a new color each time. I have had some blooming inside on my light racks during the winter and did great and it was fun to have petunias blooming while it was snowing outside. I am also a zone 8a. I have been impressed with dollar store seeds too. I love Swallowtail seeds, I have bought from them for years.

I've grown petunias for 4 years now. This year doing lots of different kinds of wave petunias. I've had such positive success with waves that I don't even want to try other kinds. There are enough to keep me growing that series. Tidal Wave Silver is the one I'm excited to see for this summer.

I'm so happy you liked the Superbissima so much that you are growing them again. I'm giving them a go this year, they are so interesting! I grew the purple tye die last year. They look like they are plugged in. The colors are incredible! I find petunias to be fairly easy from seed. I too get them from Baker and Swallowtail. Ps thanks for reminding me to start them in a couple weeks!

I've been growing the bulk of my petunias from seed the last few years too, definitely saving some money and fun to watch them grow. I'm primarily looking for spreading ones to fill the borders of beds and love the Easy Wave Series from GeoSeed. Great price for quite a few seeds. I've been trying to figure out the best time to start my seeds in zone 4a as I want them to be as big and bulky as I'd find in a nursery as soon as my last frost happens. And a tip I have is to pinch out those first buds, or even the second ones. That promotes branching for more full plants!

New subscriber! I am loving your content. I started petunias for the first time this year. I only bought one pack from True Leaf Market. So far, I've had about 80% germination rate. I am trying to be conservative in my purchases as this is only my second year starting flowers from seeds.

Thanks for subbing! That is an awesome germination rate! Mine are doing well too!

I've been growing them from seed for 4 years now. I had gathered seeds from a wave petunia in 2020 and have used those same old seeds until this year. I am sure they'll still germinate! It was interesting to see all the different shades of purple and pink the purple wave can produce. This year I got Dolcissima petunias from geoseeds. Starting in a few weeks.

I have to say that seeing your petunias from seed had already inspired me to use that method this next season. I like that there are so many different varieties than we see at the nurseries here! PW are fine, but it seems like we get the same varieties every year 🤨

Petunias are tougher than we think and can take lower temps. I started my Baker Creek petunia seeds in August and had petunias for my Fall containers (zone 8a). We've even had a couple of lower overnight temps and they didn't care. Look for frost hardy varieties to make sure though. Love the ones you've chosen 😊

Alright here’s the deal. Petunias are expensive near me too. I got a pack of 15 wave (lilac pinkish toned) petunias this year. Judging by what you just said, I have to start mine in January: I want nice healthy plants to put into containers in my front porch which gets sun from early/mid morning in spring and I need a hardy sun tolerant plant for early summer. My coleus loved this space and I’m forced to mix it up center porch. What’s weird is that not 5ft to the rear of this porch and I can only plant sunpantiens in one container but not the other because there’s not enough sun so I have potted ivy on one side, coleus in the center - sunpatiens 5ft from that pot and then its full on sun.
@shesamadgardener Жыл бұрын
Yeah I want large plants when the time comes to plants them … that’s why I’m starting so early … plus if I mess up, I have time for a second run at it. All of my propagated coleus is doing great by the way!

Very good video! I’m getting ready to start a bunch, also. This is my first season planting seeds. In another comment, you had mentioned filling 50% of the tray with water. Do you leave that water in the tray or do you let it soak and remove the rest of water after 30 minutes or so? Also, after germination, do you water them the same? My biggest anxiety is the watering and making sure I do it right :) thank you!
@shesamadgardener9 ай бұрын
I leave the water in out of pure laziness … it’s really best to allow the water to be soaked up for a little while and then dump off the excess.

I saved Echinachea seeds this year, and I tried an experiment just to see if the seeds were going to be viable. I put them in a paper towel in a plastic bag and into the fridge. After a couple of weeks, nothing was happening, so I decided to take them out of the fridge and put them on an east facing window sill. Within a couple of days they started sprouting!! Since it was just an experiment, I was going to throw them out, and then my husband said I should pot them up. Go figure, he's always telling me to throw out extra plants. So yesterday, that's what I did. Clearly, I'm going to have to keep them alive until next April, but I only potted twelve, so we'll see.😊 We have a steep hill at the front of our property that we're going to try and fill with coneflowers and Black-eyed Susan's. Now I feel confident about spreading the seeds and seeing what happens. Good luck with your petunias, you succeeded once, you should do well second time around. 🙂

Hi Judy, I’m so sorry you are feeling down … I struggle with those feelings too. I hope you are finding some joy in gardening for at least a few moments each day. I take my humidity dome off once at least 50% of the seeds have germinate.

Hi Amanda, I have to ask you a question. I'm growing petunias and I am bottom watering, but the roots are not to the bottom of the container yet and the top stays dry. Is that OK? I feel like I should spray some water on the top. Thanks!!
@shesamadgardener9 ай бұрын
Hmm, try adding more water with each watering … I typically see the water come to the surface and darken the soil … as long as you continue to bottom water, I think you can also do some light watering from above.

Good morning! I have similar issue with my seeds - starting them “on time” and waiting too long to bloom. After watchinf your video, I want to give a try with starting petunias early. My only concern they may become leggy. Do you have any recommendations if seedlings become leggy while still need to be in the house?
@shesamadgardener Жыл бұрын
Fixing leggy seedlings is a battle … most of the time it doesn’t work. Just keep the lights close to the sprouts and they should stay short.
