I realized I gave 5 tips while wearing a T-shirt that says “seven”. No intention of trolling anyone here 😂 enjoy! G.

I picked the guitar back up at 52 and have had to tread very carefully with my hands. Rule #1: If your hard starts to hurt, stop for a while. This is excepting the case where it is simple muscle fatigue. This is especially the case if there is tendon pain or pain or warmth in the joints. DO NOT PLAY THROUGH JOINT PAIN, JOINT SWELLING, JOINT WARMTH, or TENDON PAIN. You'll get the endurance over time mostly because your hand movements will become more efficient. Great to see somebody discuss this topic so frankly. You'd think hand injuries don't exist watching most people!

I like playing without a metronome so I tend to alternate. I really do not prioritize it that high for anything other than finished music. I should use a metronome/drum track more often. It's just that when I'm noodling around and picking out new melodies I don't like the time constraint on me all the time.

@@benearhart1224 noodling around / playing & practicing are different things, don’t confuse. My tips here are for practicing strictly
@benearhart12243 жыл бұрын
@@firetv Hey do you see it as a different type of practice to follow the metronome versus developing the correct timings for the partial notes (1/8, 1/16, etc)? Here is an example: I can play 16th notes by falling into a counting rhythm "1, 2, 3, 4" on the beat. But i can also play quarter notes, then concentrate on perfectly dividing that, then doing it again. Once I get that on one note, I then move it around. Is there a name for that because it's really not related to the metronome. it's the derivative rhythms taken from it. Right?
@jfo3000 Жыл бұрын
@benearhart1224 If you mean setting the metronome at, for example 140 BPM, playing quarter notes on the beat, then twice as fast on eighth notes, then twice as fast again on sixteenths, all without changing the metronome speed I'm pretty sure that's called "subdividing the beat". I practice this way, it's what performing music is about anyway, changing up the rhythm. I believe this rhythm changing while repeating a particular lick is called "speed bursts" by lots of players. Ben Eller likes this approach, it works well I feel.

Excellent advice on areas to focus on during precticing... I don't always warm up enough... or practice scales enough... I mostly just practice my favorite riffs and look to learn new ones... I'm going to change it up again... I know it will help improve my playing. I get bored too quickly doing warm-ups, scales... but need to practice practice practice. Thanks Gus for doing the videos... you help keep people inspired... speaking for myself anyway. Keep up the good work!

Great advise Gus, I find a good thing to help warm up your hands is to wash your hands under warm water and massage the finger joints, then hand stretches even before picking up the guitar, then I will run the scales cheers I love the channel and the content

Thank you it's very helpful! would you make a video about your approach how you make riffs?? also about how you practice chords... i focused mainly on soloing for the past years and i really lack the skills to come up with some nice melodic chord progression or cool riffs...by the way i'm doing a cover of Force Majeure very soon but the part vinnie moore plays is really hard core haha.

Thank you so much for the tips, I'm 5 months practicing again after 8 years of not playing from my teenage years (aside from fking around vs practicing). It's so cool I'm already doing the finger/spider walking to practice coordination and mechanics to warm up like you say, that has re-ally really helped. I'm so going to practicing the trills and hammer pull offs along with sweep picking. With a metronome I'll eventually be sick at shredding but luckily also because of you. Thanks! 🤘🎸

Please do an in depth video of warming up and tell stories of injuries you have had or struggle with. Also, do you ears ring at night when everything is quiet? Has your hearing been impacted by playing loud shows every night when on tour? What kind of hearing protection do you use when playing live? Killer video by the way. Very informative. Thanks.
@firetv4 жыл бұрын
Alan Elias only time when my ears ring at night is if I played a show where the sound wasn’t good at the venue. Generally I avoid listening with headphones much, and don’t listen to music loud at home, only on stage ;)

I decided just recently that enough being lazy, that I am going to learn how to play fricken guitar finally. I'm aggressively learning songs that i would normally be intimidated by, like Queensryche and Ratt. Well now I can even play those stretch chords in Lay it down. And Queensryche I don't belive in love. I just hung in there and did the work. Now my problem is how do I get up to speed on solos. I can't fly around the neck like most good guitarists. So I'm doing drills that get both hands locked together sort of like your drills, just not nearly as fast or as technical. Also I made a goal to learn the E minor pentatonic all over the neck. I used to know only two shapes and little pieces of others. Now I almost know the whole neck. So for me it's very psychological. I had to make up my mind to get good. A goal. A big goal. Now I'm watching lots of videos how to get better. And I'm learning new songs every day. Thanks for your help Gus. You are such an accomplished player and sooooo fricken humble. I watch your channel every day. Thanks for everything. I'm very inspired to get good. 1/4 your level would be huge for me. Maybe impossible. We'll see.

One of the nicest people I've ever met. And a cat lover. I do that - I play compositions for about an hour a day - maybe 1.5 hours. I work in 30 minute chunks. And then I spend one session working on something new - a new chord, a new scale, working in a mode etc. Vary tempo - that's huge. And with metronomes, if it gets boring, use a drum plugin and work out over some beats. (Can't wait for the Blackfire pickups, Gus)
