I have 2 advices : The first is love ...you have to build memories with your boxes, each of them is unique, and the bound between you 2 is unique as well ; when you have that, you truly love your gear and you don't need to do tricks to re-fall in love with them ; then when you love them, you don't want to make them jalous or replace them...for example I only have one poly synth in my heart and so far, even if I really like another poly I won't replace my true love, no way !!! The second advice might not work for everyone but works really well for me : I only buy gear that I can carry to a gig, basically my live setup is my studio setup as well ; so maybe it evolved a bit over the time but it's pretty steady for years now, I only buy things I truly need, and I don't get bored at all :p the only exception is a spring reverb...I love her too much but she is too heavy to carry, most of the time :) So yeah, love your gear and you won't have the idea to cheat or divorce them, and if you do, this has to be a well thought decision :) that's how I manage GAS :p Cheers

What cured my GAS is trying to master Ableton Live 10 The shit is endless lol
@onceuponasynth6 жыл бұрын
lol it's funny you say that because last week I actually read the entire live 10 manual (all 700 pages lol) and it was actually surprisingly fun. It kinda made me want to sell all my gear lol.
@C1c4da6 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I did actually. I finally had enough money for a good laptop and ableton live And I sold all my gear lol. Now I just have a push and a midi keyboard and I feel like its all ill ever need to make the music I want to. I always thought the strong point of hardware synths and stuff was that they were built in a way where they are intuitive and you can actually "play" them and not program them. But if you just take some time to save some midi mappings you really like for a controller then its the same thing.(almost) If I ever miss hardware ill look up the piece of kit I want and ill read the front panel and make a midi mapping that is the same as the kit or an effects rack if I need to with a similar soft synth. So that it feels the same. And I don't miss my gear at all really because sampling, granular, and wavetable synths are my favorite types of tools. If I was an analog junkie in the past id probably feel different though. Not that I could afford to be one anyways lol I never read the entire manual but that's really impressive. I learnt most of what I know through ned rush(Great youtuber and artist) and mr. bill. theyre both really talented and creative I like them a lot. Some hardware out there cant really be replicated through a computer like a lot of modular/weird circuit bendy type stuff. But im okay with that because I feel like theres always something new to learn with software as well.
@onceuponasynth6 жыл бұрын
Nice, yeah that sounds like a nice cleanse. I fantasize about selling all my stuff just so I can focus on music again lol. But I'm afraid I'll regret it. Ableton Live is super powerful and yeah I also want to focus more on sampling and manipulating audio, which opens up so many doors and doesn't require any 3rd party plugins or hardware.
@C1c4da6 жыл бұрын
@@onceuponasynth you should just do what you think is really gonna make you the happiest and least stressed. I found that the problem personally was with me not being satisfied with what I was making and not knowing when to stop or when to progress. it wasn't in the gear or the DAW. But yeah ever since I started messing with sampling and doing all sorts of weird stuff to audio i find a lot of the time I won't even use a soft synth lol. Anyways GAS sucks. I think it's because with electronic musicians one part of us loves music and the other part of ourselves loves sound design.

A great way for me to cure gas is to try and mimic the gear you want with what you've already got. For example if there's a module you want to purchase because of it's special sound. Try and get that special sound with the modules you've got. This often leads into tip #5 with unusual patching when it may take 5 modules for you to make the sound of that one module you're looking for and that is in my experience a very nice way to discover the potential of your current setup.

I've been doing this lately with Reason. I'll build something on ModularGrid, and then go.. wait.. Can I mimic what I'm trying to build here using rack extensions in Reason? Fun exercise and occasionally results in a new technique or track in Reason.

Great topic. Great suggestions. I am new to hardware so I went on a rapid GAS spree for the last year. My intention was to build a small studio with enough gear to compose live tracks (so five synths and a pile of pedals). Along the way I spent more than twice what I needed to. It has slowed down dramatically since then but still creeps in occasionally. It is compounded by my personal desire to excel in whatever I do. My philosophy: 1: Hang onto any new synth for at least three months. That's how long it takes me to start understanding what a synth is capable of. Demos and reviews cannot teach me this. Only hands on time. The exception is if I use it for a weekend and gain no satisfaction from it. 2: Multi-track. Like you said, making a whole song with one or two synths really shows me what a synth is capable of. Nearly every synth I have didn't open up until I started going outside the box with it. This goes hand in hand with my first point. Time and familiarity transform a fancy box into an extension of myself. 3: I am a minimalist by nature. If I don't use something in the studio for a few months I evaluate getting rid of it. Usually it goes. This doesn't help with my flip rate, but does keep my total accumulation to a minimum. 4: Focus on art. Like you said. For me this involves ignoring channels that only focus on showing off new gear. I now see them as soulless marketing platforms for synth manufacturers (there, I said it). Instead I follow channels by artists who make music with gear they know and love. They inspire me to be creative instead of buying shit. It's a work in progress but I'm getting there.

The most powerful and money saving gas-curing technique is to imagine the full process, that you like some new gear, research and read and listen about it, then imagine that you prepare to buy it, imagine the process of buying, feel the moment, when it's in your hand, then imagine, that you are constantly using it everyday. Eventually, you still get used to it and likely lose your interest to it.

Two things I find helpful: 1. When a new device brings new sounds or new ideas, try to implement those ideas on old gear. It puts new life into old instruments. 2. Try to remember that new gear is like new fonts... and the value of a book is in the meaning of the words, not the shape of the letters. However, that said, it does help a lot to have gear which is flexible enough to facilitate a wide variety of styles... and if a piece of gear consistently gets in the way, it may be a good idea to switch to something with less friction. So if getting music out of your gear feels like squeezing blood from a stone, replace that old Casio with something nicer.

GAS is troubling to overcome with so much content. I’ve set app limits on Reverb, set daily reminders on my phone to focus on tutorials of the gear I have, but often I still find myself scrolling for new gear. I like tip #3 because it's about mastering your mind. If you want to be happy in general you really need to learn how to trick your mind and thoughts into a different reality. Sometimes though (however rarely it is), actually making the right purchase is a cure for GAS too. Im getting better with my G.A.S. Im at the point where i have just about everything i want for my set up. I hate my Harley Benton Bass and want something better, but i try to make the best of it, and for other gear, i just want to get a ribbon mic, and a D.I. Those things would complete the list of equipment to try all the techniques i want to, but im trying to make due with what i have at the same time. I used to have a ton of gear that I accumulated for almost 10 years. Built an amazing rig for myself, then i lost it all about 3 years ago (long story). The past 3 years ive been working towards rebuilding, having a guitar rig again, instruments to play, a computer, mics, an interface, a midi controller, etc. just starting completely from scratch again, and in that process of rebuilding it turned from regaining tools, to just straight up G.A.S. I have enough gear back to where i could create some beautiful music, but i still have that urge to get that next thing that will help me "achieve" that tone im looking for and having a hard time just getting back to making music and having fun with it. Im getting there tho, slowly, but surely, and being broke helps with preventing myself from ordering more and more. Lol.

The sub phatty souded great, but poly is a must. And the 0-coast, well it was worth sacrificing for the Digitakt.

This is kind of what I do as well. I disagree that it’s a way to lose money. Sure if you always buy the very latest gear when it comes out and sell it six months later, you will lose money. If you instead buy gear that is a few years old (or even vintage stuff) your resell value is a lot better. It’s like buying a new car - as soon as you drive it off the lot it has lost 20% of its value. Unlike old cars, old synths are still great!

I know one dude who is GASing around until he buys the gear. He can’t read the manuals, so he just pushes few buttons and sells the gear within few days. If groovebox is intuitive and easy to operate, it can stay for a few months. Even if he says that it’s perfectly fits his needs, it will be sold. I see that he does not do something really deep, just few presets and standard beats. And that’s sad. Buying gear to buy gear, to trade. I was like, “dude, open your own store and sell music stuff, you will always have access to new gear”, but he can’t accept the fact that he buys and sells instead of learning and making music.

#7 BUY OR DOWNLOAD SOME THIRD PARTY SOUND BANKS. (Maybe you said this, my kids are talking over top of you). I downloaded your free patch banks for the Deepmind. I enjoy about half of the sounds you created. Some of them are very interesting! I also bought the GEOSYNTH and ANALOGAUDIO1 sound banks for the DEEPMIND. All three sets of sounds give me some sounds that are unique and push me in different creative directions. Even though I have been designing sounds for over 30 years, I find that other people have a better handle on making certain sounds than I. Others unique sound designing and musical listening experience causes them to make sounds I might not ever even think about designing. I was surprised at many of the sounds that others were able to coax out of the DEEPMIND, especially some of the brass and strings . . . A few get into the Oberheim and Roland Jupiter territory.

All fine and dandy but... you presume that GAS always sparks from us not appreciating/caring/wanting the gear we currently have. Well, it's not always the case, almost never for me at least. I just want new stuff to play with along with the gear I already own. I think that GAS (in any field, not just music) simply has to do with a need for novelty, for change, exploration, noving forward. For many of us that is deep within and hard to fight, probably not even right to fight against. It is true though that you can find the new in the old, and save some money and time in the process ;)
@onceuponasynth5 жыл бұрын
valid point, you're right it's not just about not appreciating what you have, but also just wanting cool new things. Nothing wrong with that either, I'm guilty of wanting new things too, and sometimes the new things teach us new techniques or inspire new song ideas, so getting new gear isn't necessarily a bad thing. But yeah ultimately it's a balancing act, cause for me I realized I was buying more gear than I was making music lol, so that probably wasn't great.

Hi, i'd suggest also to master the basic concepts of music production, for example how a synth works, how a compressor works and so on and no brand involved, so that we can adapt those concepts to the software and gear we already have, another suggestion from me is to be very careful when watching youtube, instagram, facebook and similar channels dedicated to audio gear, especially the ones where there is the unboxing part, because this is how they want to tempt us. I think GAS syndrome is a bad thing, especially when i see people with not enough spare money buying gear just for the sake of a selfie to be published on some synth community.

I'de rather spend that money in a piece of gear that has no real fun (like patch cables or adapters or audio interface) things that actually add functionality to the workflow

The only thing I miss is Logic Pro because I can edit the onboard plug in instruments , but with the right apps available onboard your device even with “garage band “ can be weaponized to the point of kinda surpassing Logic while having a very simple but elegant interface that’s totally native and Mobile ! I think desktop computer lust is the real problem because it just plain dies and becomes an obsolete boat anchor after a few years 👽

@@christoroppolo8742 Wait...why not have Logic? It's buggy as hell but it's only $200...If you can use it, get it!

Buy the new gear with the money you earned with your old gear. Nothing earned , no new gear. This may even convince your significant other.

Tip one describes how to grow really tired of any gear you used to love, forcing you to buy something else to replace it. Tip two kills the fun of using anything at all, especially when it comes with many pages and nasty menus. Tip three is cool, may be inspiring, but you'll need the additional gear used in the videos to get similar results then. Tip four... who are you to tell me of what motivation my interest in gear has to be? Tip five will lead one to figuring how other gear you don't yet own will allow one to get the aimed results in much better quality. Bonus tip is fun too, it lets me figure how other gear would allow for new, interesting ways without being so distracted by the gear I already own. Not helping man, not helping at all. :D

Every now and then GAS hits the fan and it gets smelly... Just wait for 3 months untill you buy what you think you want/need. Buy cash. Buy used if you might flip a piece. Less gear can be better. Modular is a well...a very deep one. If you're a gassy person, modular is not recommended.

Showing your face is good, but find another solution with the micro. It's too big and the overall appearance, this doesn't look nice. The are better possibilities.
