Thanks, I'm exactly in this situation for more than three years. Target is one minute 5 balls but failing after 5 to max 15, sometimes 20 seconds and have not seen progress last year. I thought about giving up last couple of weeks... But just recognised that my 552 even not run a minute... Good point, learn to walk first. I'll give it a try again.

Yeah! Honestly it feels like once you can do 5b cascade, learning future number patterns becomes much easier. It’s still really hard, but you aren’t fighting to understand the timing and rhythm as much as when you first learn 5. It creates a nice foundation of understanding!

Hey Taylor, great video as per usual and i always get excited seeing your videos. I got another mention about learning the 5 ball cascade. I personally found when people are learning or at that 5 ball endurance level. They seem to overly focus and breath too fast or not at all. Slow steady breaths is an important thing to look out for while maintaining all the other tips that you mentioned. The quicker the breaths. The less endurance you'll have dropping one of the balls. Juggling is therapy, a distraction and a form of meditation. The slower the breaths. The less time you think about breathing and focus on all the balls that are in the air

This came up at the perfect time and is everything I needed to hear. I’ve been dialing my 5 ball flash for a couple weeks and can do it from either side now quite consistently but have only repeated the pattern a handful of times. As exciting as that is it’s debilitatingly frustrating plateauing so hard. Going back to the 4 ball exercise I’m seeing a ton of inconsistencies and it of course shows up in the hot potato exercise as well. Thanks for being arguably the best KZbinr to teach juggling out there 🙏🏼

Thanks for this (and all your tutorials and videos really, so interesting and useful)! I didn't start working on 5 for now, but it's been my next goal... Now I'm more confident into not rushing it and will definitely work on 552 and hot popato before I really try anything else. As i didnt start yet, I don't know how much it could be helpful for 5 balls learning. But what always worked for me when trying to learn difficult stuffs was setting easier milestones that feel like real accomplishments. I'm always working on different stuff at the same time too, so that I don't only get very frustrated on the one I can't do right bow, but also see progresses elsewhere. It has to stay fun. For example, it took me weeks to get a consistent 3 balls shower, but in the midtime I learned and practiced takeouts, burke's barrage and bettered my 4 balls fountain. This is how I intend to learn 5 balls: using the milestones that you advised, continue learning 3 and 4 balls tricks along the way, and taking the needed time 😊

Lots of high quality tips here that I'm really glad you mention. I think there are three main things that those that improve the fastest are doing correct. 1. Analyzing what they are doing. Basically being aware of what they are doing and how they could do better. This you mention great! 2. Practicing a lot, ofc. 3. Practicing at the correct difficulty level for YOU! And from my experience, the younger you are, the bigger the chance is that you're reaching a bit high and the older you are, the bigger the chance is that you get stuck in the mindset of that everything has to be perfect before you level up the difficulty, or that you simply don't believe that you can accomplish a certain difficult task. (Just running 5 balls vs. 3-4 ball drills for example). For the last one I understand the points you're making about the drills, which I think is important. But I don't think just going for tons of 5 is "the least effective way to learn it". I think a lot of specific practice is very important. BUT!! As you said, there's little point to JUST practice 5 if "you drop every 5 catches". I know you're kind of saying this, but just to clearify, do both! Not just 5 balls (if you're at a low level), and not just 4 balls drills (especially if you are at a quite high level). You have to practice what you want to learn (5 ball cascade), but remember that the lower your skill level is, the more important these drills are! Great video Taylor, again! :)
@TaylorTries6 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you agree with the tips! I know you’ve done a ton of work to get as good as you are so it’s nice to hear your feedback. To clarify on your last point, I didn’t say just ‘going for tons of 5’ is the least efficient way to practice. Though I do think doing 3 and 4 is a more effective way to learn 5, I don’t think you are necessarily inefficient if you only work on 5 ball stuff, as long as it is done intelligently. The exact thing I say is “muscling through five is the least effective way to learn it.” When I say muscling through I mean that just throwing 5 balls over and over without any intention or structure is the least effective way to learn it, and I believe that’s true (aside from perhaps just not practicing at all). Warming up, doing smart exercises, and intentionally analyzing and making adjustments is key in my opinion. That can be done with just 5 ball work, but I think including 3 and 4 ball exercises in that is an even more efficient way to do it. But all of that is better than ‘muscling through’ with mindless trial and error, in my opinion that is the least effective way to improve. As I go on to say right after that, “Do it more intentionally, build yourself up.” I think you and I are saying the same thing, so I just wanted to clarify that 😄

Hey Taylor, thanks for sharing! I talked to you briefly at Mondo this year. I learned to juggle from your tutorials and have been subscribed on both accounts for a while now. I think you made a lot of great points in this video, and I can definitely apply these tips to my juggling. 6 has been pretty rough for me. I've been stuck on 57 catches of 6 fountain since March. It's been about a year of seriously training it, and I would often go months before improving by even 1 catch. I practice tons of siteswaps with 4 and 5. But lately I've been varying my props and have only been training 6 balls about once a week. I will try to start practicing every day again like you said. I know you mention 3 cascade with short dwell time and 552 as being the best exercises. I think they're great for learning 5, but I think practicing tricks like 534, 5551, and 55514 are helpful for getting rhythm down with 5. They were for me anyway. I learned 5 balls from your tutorial. With 5 rings, I made quick progress without having to practice that much by going through lots of siteswaps. So I would go through 3 and 4 and practice each basic site swap that has one 5, then two 5s, etc. So something like 522, 51, 531, 5511, 55500, 53, 534, 552, 5551, 55514, 55550. But different approaches may work better for different people. Despite having ran 5 balls for 1 minute and 42 seconds, and being able to do a whole bunch of siteswaps in and out of the cascade and even run them for a bit, I feel like I've got a ways to go before my 5 cascade feels totally locked in solid. But I still think training tricks like 645, 744, etc in and out of the pattern is very helpful for improving control with the base pattern. Honestly I think there's so much to be said about this and KZbin comments may not be the best place for a lengthy conversation. But could you make a video on tips for 6 fountain? I think it is so much harder than 5 cascade.

A lot of people never learn 4bmm, so you absolutely don’t need to learn it first! I honestly recommend working on them both, they’re both hard and take a long time, and they’re different enough that they won’t interfere with each other’s learning progress!

Juggling 5 balls holds kind of a weird place for me, as I did things "wrong", I think. E.g., I didn't figure out the under tricks / exercises until after I learned to juggle 5 balls. But I remember my intense juggling phase being, effectively, "I want to learn this trick", then metaphorically beating my head against a wall until it worked, then getting bored and moving on to the next trick. And 5 balls was easier, conceptually, than a variety of other tricks. Just a matter of getting good throws with good timing. But I also remember a _lot_ of time kneeling in front of a door, tossing the balls up, dropping everything, picking them up, and going again. Being able to get a consistent, accurate throw that's a bit higher takes a _lot_ of throws. Anyway, if memory serves, I was doing five balls after about 3 months of intense practice, and then seven balls after about 2 years of intense practice, after which I stopped being quite so interested in doing intense practice. As spending 15-20 hours a week on juggling is quite the commitment. And both of those would be at the stage of having the basics down, not any threat to win a local endurance competition. But I was _definitely_ learning lots of other stuff during the same time -- I was working on 3 and 4 ball tricks, and then would work on five balls, and it'd be an every day thing. So getting to five balls after two years of solid, but non-life-consuming practice does seem like a very solid pace. Anyway, I liked the advice here, and it all seems good, even if my experience wound up being different, for better or worse.
@TaylorTries6 ай бұрын
Everyone’s experience is definitely different! And your experience brings up the important point that time is a strange way to measure progress. Someone can say they learned 5 balls in a year, or two years, or three months, and the amount of actual hours within those time spans might be very similar. The year person might have practiced a half hour a day, the three months person might have practiced 3 hours a day. One person might also have way more experience with coordination activities, for another person juggling might be the first activity that involved throwing and catching for them. It’s definitely all relative! I do think regardless these tips would help anyone improve faster, but they certainly aren’t required to learn 5 😄 I didn’t do a lot of them when I learned 5, but I also had similar benefits that you seemed to have, like intense motivation and drive, more free time, and even physical flexibility and energy. Those can all definitely increase the speed at which you learn a pattern in juggling ☺️

@TaylorTries6 ай бұрын
Nope! They are completely different beanbags. The Propworthy ones are meticulously designed by me, whereas the Zeekio ones were slight alterations to the original Zeekio beanbags. The Propworthy ones are intentionally less tight/full so they feel broken in right away, and they are also more durable. The new material also feels different, hard to explain exactly why but it’s a little more textured. The ‘Grip’ version is also really grippy in a wonderful way ☺️ Hopefully I can make a video on them soon!

Hello Taylor and thank you for your advice which helped me a lot with 5 ball juggling. I started juggling very late, just before retirement. It took me several years to get there, now at around 60 throws. Needing all my concentration, I only count from time to time, in packs of 8, with the sound of each ball caught. My question is: what do you think of this video entitled "I learned to JUGGLE 5 BALLS in 25 DAYS for the ATHLETIC GAINS" by Thomas Underwood who, knowing only how to juggle a little 3 balls, would have managed to juggle for 10 seconds (>44 throws) in 25 days? I left him a comment expressing my doubt.
@TaylorTries6 ай бұрын
It’s certainly possible he could have achieved that, depending on his previous coordination experience (if he’s already learned a ton of other hand eye coordination activities it helps drastically), but even then it would have taken a lot of practice. So he may have put 10 hours a day in and gotten 200+ hours of practice in a month. Who knows! He also could have known three and four beforehand and fudged his progress for a video, because it’s a better story that way. Media and storytelling is never 100% true, especially that which is incentivized by money. I think the important thing is to not look too much to other people for comparison, especially on the internet and especially when it comes to progress or skill. Be patient with yourself, and keep checking in on your progress and evaluating where you feel it should be for you based on your life and experience. And if you worry you aren’t able to accurately measure your progress, seek guidance from someone who understands it well ☺️
