That first tip is super important! I used to do this years ago. I would buy sets full price, or for an awful discount, just to increase my inventory size. It wasn’t even close to being worth it and I’ve got many of those lots still in my store years later.

These are HUGE tips! Great video. Like you said at the end I mostly use my BL store to make a little bit of money but mostly to help fund my own MOCs and minifigs I want. Its been great for me just being able to in a sense "recycle" that same money onto new LEGO that I want. The more I sell the more I can buy!!!

Great tips. Thank you. I was wondering how you value a store. I run an independent LEGO shop online called The Missing Piece. Recently I was approached to buy a BrickLink store. I’m interested in purchasing it but I have no idea how to value the store. This store has just over 90,000 items in around 6,000 lots. I have visited their office. Everything if nicely organized in drawers and containers. I would be purchasing everything. Website, piece and fixtures. Any advice?

Hi Dustin! Because you are buying the entire business, they should be able to share information as to how their past sales have been and stuff like that. If they choose to keep some of that information hidden, that would put up a red flag for me. It is hard to give a store a value just based on the fact that they have 90,000 parts in 6,000 lots. You also have to know if they are new or used pieces, and know what parts they do have. Do they have mini figures, technic parts, etc. You also need to know if they have a customer base, or if that is the reason they want to get rid of it, because they are not getting enough sales. Make sure to know the numbers side as well and hopefully they will share that with you. If I were to say a number but DO NOT take this as the right answer, I would lowball it and offer $4,000. I doubt they'd go with that low of a number for all the parts and drawers, and website, but without additional information, I wouldn't feel comfortable spending any more than that. Another question to ask yourself is if it is worth your time to continue running their store, or are you going to implement all of their parts into your store? Just some thoughts, but its a great opportunity, and one to take advantage of if benefits you and them both.

I consider myself to be a very honest person so when i say things like "great video" for whatever reason I mean it. I'm going to open a store sometime in next few months and u and bricktsar r the reason I feel comfortable doing it. I watch pops block shop but he is more about ebay on his videos.. And leg bros is mostly just mini figs.. So yea, u guys r definitely the reason I feel like I can do it

I agree on tip #1 of don’t just go buy Lego. As I start to run out of new sets to part out, I buy bulk lots of used lego to supplement my store with. Then when good sales appear, I switch back. This way I’ve found I’m never short of pieces to add to the store.

That is smart! We've had discussions as to whether or not we want to get into selling used pieces, but we haven't yet done so. It's smart to just have a bulk lot of used LEGO sitting around though to be able to keep adding parts even when sales are low. Might steal that idea. 😉 Thanks!

Just know going in used parts are a whole different beast. You’ll get a lot more variety, but it takes longer to sort and you’ll get plenty of lots with only a few pieces. But I like sorting, so I don’t mind. And there’s always plenty of bulk lots everywhere.

@@ryana6409 I think, new and used parts are even two different business models: * On selling new, your main cost are the parts. A part out value of 3 is considered good, which however you know before buying. Also you have a rather low number of possible lots (Lego themselves has only about 12k) and the part value will probably only go down, because the part is currently available by an increasing number of sources. Also your typical customers are either MOC builders (buying insane numbers of the same piece) or minifig collectors, who are looking to pay less than the whole set. * On selling used, you main cost is the work (and partly the storage). You never know what exactly you'll get and need a lot of work sorting and removing trash. But this gives you a part out regularly between 5 and 10 and another group of customers: Collectors, who want to complete their sets, for which you may have the only fitting offer in a whole country. Because even giant stores with ober 30k lots aren't even close to having "everything".

great tips, how many parts would you say you need in your store to be doing this full time, I estimate around 500k with a good variety of lots? what would you think?

Good question! I have done some research, and I believe between 600k and 800k is a good amount to have to do BrickLink full time, though of course that depends on all the pieces you are selling and the way your business plan is set up, etc. I will talk more about this in the next episode of BrickSide Chat! There are a lot of variables but we could probably get a return rate on average or for every 1000k profit you need x amount of inventory on average... be valuable to lots of sellers I think as they get started, realistic.
