I recently rediscovered Nancy Zieman's videos on youtube. Some of your viewers might be interested in her pivot and slide method (Sewing With Nancy - Fitting Finesse (VHS, 1994 search using this) which centers on fitting for the upper bust measurement which governs neck/armhole and easily alters for FBA, waist, hip width, waist lengthen/shorten in addition to sleeve circumference. There is so much good content out there. It is so nice to have KZbin...it teaches us how to do everything thanks to talented content makers such as yourself.

Excellent tips! I have been relearning sewing for my "new older body". It was easy when I was young and everything looked good. I have the sewing techniques down, so now I am learning which styles I like now for my body. Really the challenge for me, now.

I think you are absolutely correct that “big 4” patterns have become much more generous in the amount of ease they are building into their patterns. I’ve been sewing for over 50 years, and I can tell you that it was not always this way. I can no longer depend on my body measurements to select the proper size the way I used to 10 or 15 years ago. Things have definitely changed. If you simply use your body measurements, all you will be assured of is having enough fabric to go around your body, which is definitely not all there is to a garment that fits.
@sarahd18172 жыл бұрын
Sewing a mccalls top that laces up the back. It should be fitted in order to lace. Right? Instead, I had to pull 4" out of the waist to keep it from overlapping. My measurements didn't mean anything.
@SparkyOne5492 жыл бұрын
I’m underweight but am a 10-12 according to the patterns. I measure the pattern itself and find that it’s too large, too much ease. Many times I can do a size 6-8 which is the smallest and still have some ease.
@1wholovestrees2 жыл бұрын
I think you are right on with your statement. I’ve been sewing as well for over 50 years, back when dinosaurs were young. And the big four pattern companies were very very different from what they are now. Butterick was always known for its slim lines, along with Vogue with McCall’s and simplicity being the more looser fitting ones. But now everybody wants to be looser fitting, and we all are now wearing sacks.

Good for you, Lindsey! Your message of taking the time to measure ones own body as ACCURATELY and FREQUENTLY as possible must be impressed to everyone who sews garments! Taking the time to sew a muslin is invaluable and I still do it after sewing for over 50 years when I come across a new pattern. I’m a plus size on top and a solid size 12 in the waist and hips and must ALWAYS make an FBA on every new pattern I come across. The time I spend doing so is worth its weight in gold for the fantastic fit I get - something that is not to be found in ready-to-wear. Great video full of information that all sewists can use. You always have such heart information. Thank you! I wonder, what are the most important length measurements you would recommend? I have been working on circumference for a while and am realizing that my length and proportions may be some of my problem. Especially shoulder to bust and bust to waist. I also have a high round back and forward sloping shoulders. If I take my garment and life it up at the shoulder…. It really seems to fit better everywhere. I’m just not sure how to make those adjustments as most information is circumference. Thank you for any advice, ❤️ Diann
@InsidetheHem2 жыл бұрын
So, you’re on the right track. Bust to waist length will hide a myriad of other fitting issues. But if you want to address shoulder length, you can just slice through the bodice between shoulder and high bust and shorten that way. Just be sure to do the same to the back and any plackets, facings, sleeves, etc.

Do you have thoughts on fitting the waist of a pattern when your under bust is smaller than your natural waist? Would you still recommend placing the waist at the natural waist or the smallest point on your body? Thank you.
@cliftonmcnalley84692 жыл бұрын
My most valuable fitting tool is my phone. Being able to set the timer and step away from the phone for the photo will result in the best quality of photos. Selfies taken in a mirror while holding the phone are typically useless for the study of fit as lifting the arm will distort any fitting issues. There is no possible way to study the fit of a garment if you are holding your phone up. I would strongly disagree with not looking at your own body if you are truly struggling with fit. In my youth, my rise was too short, arms and legs too long, and waist too small. Even though my hips were a bit larger than indicated on a big four size 12 pattern, I only chose a larger size when making a pencil skirt. All of the alterations were simple for me to do on the affected pattern pieces. Easy peasy. Not so any longer. Had I not taken the time to study "proper human posture" and compare honest photos of myself to that posture, I would have given up. In order to fix a fitting problem, I have to identify the problem first. Once identified, the fit of a garment can disguise flaws and accentuate assets. George Clooney and Cary Grant - two of the sexiest, most debonair men to grace the silver screen - both have/had horrible postures! But their tailors know/knew how to cut their jackets to disguise their flaws. Women can do the same when making their own clothing. But in my mind, it is necessary to identify those flaws in order to hide/correct them. If you have a person IRL that can nip and tuck you properly for all of your fittings, you may not need to study your own posture. But - if you're doing this on your own, how are you supposed to fix something if you don't understand the problem? I once helped a man asking for fitting help on a tailoring blog who was having a very difficult time fitting his trousers. When he showed photos of his legs, I recalled running across his condition in my posture studies. No one else was offering much assistance, I think he even stumped the professionals. I pm'd him, explained I wasn't a doctor, but I suggested he look into a specific "syndrome" and that he might find that a more traditional trouser cut might be a better choice for him. It was an awkward thing to do for/to a total stranger on the other side of the world! He answered me back, thanking me profusely for my input because many people in his family had the same problem and now they all understood it was simply genetic! Nothing to be done other than just to deal with it. Knowledge is power.

Amazing testimonial. Thanks for sharing. I will say that in doing my pattern review videos, where the camera is straight on and I can’t hide any fit issues, I will notice more than when I look in the mirror. Moving around gives a more natural posture than when we stiffen up in the mirror.

I never had to worry about shape and fitting. All the sized pattern Brands perfectly fitted except for Vogue. You never knew with those patterns from Vogue and they were expensive to buy. Now that I am much older and have to cope with the wear and tear of the body, I need a Tailor's Model but I cannot find a cheaper example to buy. Do you have any good suggestions? I live in Europe. Evelyn, welcome to the amazing world of garment sewing! You will find a wonderful community. I began sewing my own clothes a few years ago and I love it. This video is SO important because these fitting issues WILL present themselves and you WILL be tempted to throw in the towel. My advice: start with patterns that are forgiving in terms of fit. Look for patterns that don’t need closures. Then start to add in one new feature every time you sew and practice that separately on fabric scraps before doing a muslin. (Darts, pleats, ruffle, zipper, button holes, different seam finishes, etc.). All the while, you will be learning how to get the fit you want every time you sew. I found vertical body measurements to be the most helpful to my fitting issues because I’m shorter than what most patterns are drafted for. I usually have to shorten above the armscye as well as above the waist of a bodice. Now that I know this, it’s so much easier to get a good fit. My point is, hang in there, take advantage of the sewing community to learn about the fitting challenges, take it in steps, and don’t forget to enjoy the process!

Hi, I am Shelly Lemons. I had a lumpectomy in 2019. Fortunately the surgeon did not have to cut into my breast since the tumor was so high but it did effect the shape. I explain as off center or he gave that one a lift. I’m between a B-C cup on the small size but a steady 38 band size. I tend to measure up for comfort. Am I doing it correctly? How did you get a form in your size?
@louiseeckert15742 жыл бұрын
I had part of a breast removed, too. They suggested buying a bra that fits the larger breast, and putting a single or double small pad inside the cup on the smaller side, to make each breast the same size. So easy, but even my 30yrs of sewing didn’t think of that solution!! Louise, Australia 🦘

First time watcher here. I have never seen a body form like that. Very similar to my body. There are no measurements though for that tummy - so how do you measure and fit that?

You can pad a standard body form to mimic your shape, then cover it with a thin jersey “body stocking” you make. Big boobs? Put your old bra on the mannequin and pad out the cups. Big bum or hips? Just pad out the mannequin. Louise, Australia 🦘

@@Northandsouthsewing I'm glad it worked. I've been meaning to make one. It totally makes sense that you'd want an upgrade, considering you make everything! Wow, that is really impressive!! I hope to get to that point one day. #goals 😁

Hi, Carrie! The DittoForm is pricey but a game changer. Ask Carol, DF owner about her payment plan options. Would also make a great gift! Just saying! Hehe!

Great tips! I just want to move your straps in on your top so they don’t fall off of your shoulders. From another narrow shouldered girl. Lol

I don’t think I’m narrow shouldered. I think this pattern placed the straps too far to the outside. I don’t usually have these problems with straps. Will discuss more in my patter review vid!!

What holds sewers back? 1) Bad patterns. Patterns are OFTEN not off the rack quality fit. Solution: Use pattern review website. 2) Sewing machine. New home sewing machines are very glitchy. Solution: Get a good quality, older (pre 1980) machine for $30, take it to a skilled sewing machine mechanic who can correct timing or anything else. Viola! Now you're cooking.

I guess if a dress shows cleavage, legs, back, stomach, and just plain doesn’t cover the body, IT DOESN’T FIT.
