My advice would be (and that is what I do too) plan several holidays to the UK and visit one place at the time. In 2019 I went for a week to Colchester. In 2022 I went to Birmingham an d This October I will be going to London. With a bit of luck in 2026 I will go to Wales or Scotland. This way I really have the time to see everything I want. And have a relaxed holiday. I am living in the netherlands btw.

Wales also has beautiful mountains to walk up, if your fit.😁 Tenby is a favourite. Pembrokeshire has fabulous unspoilt beaches.

if your spending a week in london its worth getting the london pass works out at around 30 dollars a day The London Pass allows access to over 90 attractions, including: POPULAR ATTRACTIONS • Tower of London • The View from the Shard • 1-Day Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour • Thames River Boat (Uber Boat by Thames Clippers - 1-day Hop-on Hop-off) • Windsor Castle (afternoon entry only) • Westminster Abbey • London Bridge..you can get fewer days but works out more expensive daily..even better if you buy when on sale .they last a year but once activated they start counting down so use or lose.

Birmingham, my home town (though moved away now). I'm so, so glad you've said 'don't just go to London'!! It's ok, but people miss out seeing some lovely places by just going there, or spending a majority of their holiday in London.

I can understand your Daughter on Castles. I think most intact and lived in are proberly in the UK. I may be wrong, But Warrick is a good example and one was amazed by.

Check out Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. It was the site of many English/Scottish castles since the Anglo Saxons arrived in around 500AD. Why English/Scottish? The border moved a lot and it's right on the border. 40 miles north of Hadrian's Wall. It defended against invading Vikings, Scots and other Germanic/Norse tribes. The ruling family were known as 'The Fighting Percies', Percy was the family name given to a Norman general by the Norman conqueror William 1st, also known as William the Bastard as he couldn't prove he was a king's son. Although I'm from this county and am probably biased, I still think it's one of the most stunning bits of unspoiled countryside and coastline (the coast is protected from 'development'. Fuck you, Trump, despite what you tried) and is one of our greatest castles.

Another tip would be is check if you need to fly in to London. Some of the airports out of London have flights to America and other countries or you could fly into say Amsterdam and take a low cost airline to a airport nearer to where you need to be

Fun fact. It seems like Wales has the most castles in the UK, but actually, it has the second least with 600. Scotland has the most with 1800, followed by England with 1500, and Northern Ireland with the least at 85. However, all the castles in Wales are densely packed together in a small space, resulting in Wales having more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe. This is what makes it seem like Wales has the most castles and what makes Wales the best country in the UK for castles because you can see so many in only a short time and distance. However, for the total number of castles, the Republic of Ireland massively beats all of the UK with around 30,000 castles.

Wales has mostly authentic castles, whereas Scotland is full of pretty 19th century follies pretending to be castles.

My tip: you don't _have_ to drive. It can be useful for getting to rural spots, but public transport within and between towns and cities is pretty good, if a little pricey at times. There are bus routes through some popular rural areas too - I'm thinking - locally to me - open top bus through the New Forest; Jurassic Coast bus route, etc.

Northern Ireland isn't a country, it's an occupied part of the country of Ireland. The UK held Ireland as a colony from 1200 to the 1900s, but after the revolution from 1916 - 1922 most of Ireland gained independence and formed a state. As part of the terms of a peace treaty under threat of even more genocide by the british army, the UK kept a grip on a section in the north. Then they sent their armies to terrorise the catholic people there to maintain an apartheid like state where catholics didn't have equal voting rights. In the UK saying "Northern Ireland is a country" is a political statement, not a neutral one. Even though it is a legal reality, it is similar to saying, "Crimea is Russia". Many people agree that Ireland will be reunified in the near future due to the incompetence of the current government to maintain their colonial holdings. Their empire is shrinking! We are winning. Solidarity with Gaza.

If you think visitors to NI are remotely interested in your bitter take on the history of the province you are entirely mistaken. I am Scottish, but I know I would be wasting my time if I whined to visitors about the Highland Clearances and how beastly the English have been to the Scots over the centuries. For goodness sake, give it up. Tourists don't want to be lectured about past historic injustices. They really don't care.

@@lorddaver5729 Troubles history and the history of occupation and resistance is a huge tourism industry. There are many museums and tours, and people with and without Irish connections travel to Ulster and want to learn about history. I’m sure many people do actually agree with my take
