We adopted a heavily abused cat from a cat hoarder home. The SPCA had almost decided he was not able to be adopted but saw a little spark in him. He hid from us for 2 full days in his cupboard. He got into a shoebox that was inside another box. Eventually he started smooching our hands from his box. He bit us a few times while we adjusted to his limits. He would panic and back track. 2 years on he jumped onto my lap for the first time and settled down. He loves kisses. His tail shivers when he gets excited and he will run at his favourite people. So glad got to show him what love looks like.

Hi! So here's a little tips from an foster mom: if it's too late and the foster cat is already under the bed, couch etc: Just lie down to the ground, to your side at some distance of them. Don't look at them but speak to them. Tell them a story in a calm, maternal voice. Maybe pretend to sleep a little too. Slow down your heartbeats. After a few hours or days (if so, make sure they have all they need under this hiding spot), depending, put some really good cat food on your palm and just put your hand wide open at the entrance of their hiding spot. Do not reach out to them but pretend to sleep. Breath slowly. Once they're comfortable eating in your hand, you can try to wiggle a toy or a soft little ball to invite them to go out. I've done this with strays and wild young (2 months to one year old) cats and it worked well. It just take a lot of patience. 😅

Gonna try this. I just fostered a senior cat whose owner died from Covid, the instructions I received from the state was she is technically being ‘quarantined ‘ here, and to not let her sleep in my bed. It’s a small apartment so I let her out in the living room and under the couch she goes. Luckily she only has 2 hiding places really: couch and desk. If I needed to I can get to her. Once I find her in one spot she usually just transfers to the other. But the roommate traffic keeps her hiding. There is some progress, or a glimmer. She hides all day and explores at night, finishes her food and does her business. She’ll occasionally pop out during the day but hides quickly. But at night or now from her caves she has let me nuzzle the top of her head with a straw, and my hand. I leave my room door open and she checks out the windows, meows, scopes out the room. She doesn’t really go for the treats I got her, or hand feeding she just kind of turns her head away.

I’m gonna take some of this and apply where able! I just adopted a 3 YO male Maine Coon who unfortunately sought shelter under my couch in my living room. I’ve given him his litter box, food and water as well as the carrier his previous owner brought him in. So far, most progress I’ve made is by talking to him in a soft, somewhat maternal voice and keeping my eyes closed, talking towards his safe place. I got him to come out and look at me this way, and he would slowly reach out and extend a paw which I didn’t know what to do with so I just kept talking. Baby steps, we’re two days in and I can’t imagine how confused and sad he must be. Can’t wait to show him how much love I have :)

My favorite thing to do with older fosters is to read to them! I just go sit in the room while they nap or rest or check out the window, and I read. What ever I'm already reading, fiction, non fiction, Bible, stuff for work, news, I read OUT LOUD to our guests and it does wonders for warming up our tenuous relationship.💓💗💖💞♥️❤️

Really great idea, because cats and dogs do respond to our voices. And reading to them is very calming to them. I noticed they like a certain kind of Jazz music too, when I am busy and listen, they find a spot to watch and relax.

I had a bookshop in Ohio wherein shelter cats were fostered and then adopted by customers. More than 50 were adopted from my shop over the years. I then wrote a series of novels about the experience (Shelve Under C is the first) to encourage other shops to look into fostering dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. The business that took over my location continued to foster, thankfully.

For anyone considering fostering during this tough time, I'd like to tell you that I have found more joy in my animals than anything else during these stressful times. They are way more entertaining than television, I could watch them for hour's and not get bored. They just give me love and laughter every single day. Let's get these animals into foster homes! You never know, you might just make a friend for life.💓

We took in two kittens, we think at the time they were about 5 - 6 months old. We found them in an old garage on a property we bought, I started feeding them, they were obviously very hungry. I became their "meals on wheels" LOL That's what I would say when I pulled up to the garage, they would come running! I would drive 12 minutes twice a day to feed them. They began to trust us and let us pet them, they loved the attention! I had to wear gloves because I have an allergy to cats, plus they were very dirty and COVERED with fleas! They had worms too. Eventually we caught them in traps, very carefully and very quietly. I think they are called Have a Heart traps?? Took them to get spayed, they are both little girls, which we didn't know until then. The idea was to take them back to the property and let them go, but I couldn't do it. We had built some trust over a few months, I didn't want to think we abandoned them. So being the sucker that I am for animals, brought them to our house, we set up the back porch for them. (enclosed porch) And after watching this video, we did everything right! lol They spend their days going in and out of the house, they are mostly in though. (just to porch, not outside) And now they have been here over a year. Olga is a beautiful black and white cat, I guess she is a Tuxedo cat? Her sister Oogy is part Calico and something else. Not beautiful, but she is pretty cute. They look SO much better! Their fur is SO much better! Softer and shiny and healthy. Bright happy eyes.... to look at pictures of them when we first found them, it's pretty sad. They both LOVE attention, they come when you call them, they are playful, they let me brush them a little, they are still skittish though, noises scare them easily, a home with kids would not be good, but they still won't let us pick them up, i THINK other cats would be ok, how would I know for sure? They seem interested in our cat, Kitty, but Kitty won't have any part of another cat. Kitty was left behind when my parent's neighbors moved away, she has been with us 9 years now, she is about 14 .... this is her forever home, and I have to say, she is THE BEST CAT EVER!!! We still say to this day, we don't know how anyone could leave her, she is SUCH a good kitty! I am still hoping to find a home for Olga and Oogy together, I want to make sure they will be loved and taken care of. It's hard to find cat people, I think most people are dog people. Anyway . . . thank you Jackson for your videos and all you do!

I’m new to fostering and started to foster just this year 2021 in Sri Lanka. I got stuck here in Sri Lanka during travelling the country due to the travel restrictions and since I’m seeing all these cats and kittens suffering outside fighting for food and shelter, I decided to help. It makes me so happy. Thank you Jackson for all your work and free education to make it possible for people like me to get into fostering without the fear of not knowing what to do 🙏🏼🐱

We just adopted two littermates - an orange and white boy named Spot, and a calico girl named Patches. We got their base camp set up in our spare bedroom - their litterbox, food and water bowls, and a box with a towel in it.This is their first day with us,we can hear them from the living room if they start meowing. They spent a lot of time underneath the fish tank stand sleeping, and paying with one of those round cat toys with the tracks and balls going around it.Patches is a little shy right now,and Spot is more of a mama's boy.

We took in a senior cat to give him a better life … he’d been living in a home that the owner had left 4 years ago … she would go in every week or so to leave food. He’s been with us 3 weeks and is still hiding in the master bedroom, under the bed. He now runs around that room but doesn’t come out. (Our home is all open … there are no doors.) He has bonded with hubby but will only come to me when I have food.

We already just got 3 cats within the last few months. The first cat we adopted from someone not taking care of him. Nero, he is now a slightly plump cat (protective against liver issues later in life because of the struggle to eat, the body fat buys them time as they wither away if I understand that correctly) and he's bigger than the other cat of the same age. The second cat we found dying on our door step covered in mange. Rubbing his ears and mange with Olive Oil and skin lotion or Aloe wasn't ideal, so I ended up rubbing his ears and stuff with Coconut Oil and his ears would get so soft, and he liked it, and like drinking the coconut oil, and the dead skin would just flake right off. Coconut oil all the way. Check your dollar store if you have to, $1-3 dollars is enough. Lucian is a few months younger than the cat Nero left behind, but Lucian is the same size lol. That cat that stayed at the home we rescued Nero from just wasn't getting fed properly. Glad we saved Nero. The third cat is Nero's brother and the old lady that had him (his name was Sammy, we renamed him Dante to go with the theme the other 2 had) couldn't really take care of him, so we adopted him into the fold. This was the hardest cat. Isolated him in my room, where he had a litter box. I tested boundaries and he was not too happy. At one point when I was holding him he started clawing my shoulder, so when I tried to put him some place high and safe, he slapped the crap out of me. Pap! Pap! PAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAP and then right under the ear. I put him down and when I did that thing where you put your fist near him he'd bite me. After 2 days he was still not too happy to be around me, but on the third day he broke, and missed me so bad. Now he sleeps next to my head at night and purs full blast. Now all 3 cats follow me around the house everywhere, sleep together, play together, fight together, groom each other... If I feed them and then go downstairs, they follow me down stairs. When I come back upstairs they start eating their food again. They are all crazy cats. An autistic boy named Nero after Devil May Cry character. Lucian was supposed to be our first son if we ever did have a kid, Lilith or Lina was going to be our first daughter, and we went with Dante because the main character from Devil May Cry series is Dante. So there ended up being a theme. We just don't have money or resources for a new cat to foster and we have a dog and that gets tricky. We're going to get a cat tree soon, we just haven't had much excess cash. Can't believe anyone read all this, but then again people love reading about other people's animals.

Absolutely! I read the whole thing because your story is fascinating! I'm so glad you rescued the kitties and take great care of them. On behalf of the entire feline community, THANK YOU!!!! 😻🤗💙😻 Edit: Also, cat trees are great but they are expensive. You can build them a tower of boxes, books (but they need to be all the same size width and length- thickest at the bottom), or even a pile of blankets or some clothes... Anything to get them further from the floor and they will appreciate it. Even better if you put it near a window they can look out! 🙂🙂🙂

You can also check Craig's List for used cat trees. We've has a couple of them and we picked them off the curb for free. They we're both in great condition. So yeah, give your local garage sales a try and take a drive around on garbage day, you'd be surprised at all the stuff people throw out in excellent condition just because they don't want it anymore.💁

Sadly here in France local shelters have closed (SPA) because they fear abandonment because people fear they spread the virus and dump their loved pets :(. Also I have found out that putting canned food onto your hand when we first got our kitten made her crawl out from under the bed and be more trusting towards us ;)

The shelters will need donations now please more then ever. Keep in mind you can also still adopt. It is a bit different now considering the circumstances. I absolutely adore fostering cats, especially adult cats and cats with special needs. I'm on my fourth cat in 4 months and she's a medical foster because she needed a spay and TECA surgery before she is even remotely ready to go to a new home. She's currently recovering from her TECA surgery and is doing well. Three of my fosters have hid from me for some amount of time and my trick to helping them warm up to me is basically leaving them be and just occasionally talking to them. The biggest challenge I'm facing now is that I've recently acquired a 6 month kitten that will be mine who's ready to leave her base camp after only 3 days!

3 weeks ago I actually (accidentally) started fostering kittens for the first time EVER! These 4 little babies were born in a dangerous place and would not have survived there if they'd been left with the mom (I'm contacting rescues about how we can catch her when this quarantine is over), so they are now my foster babies. They are the reason I've been binge watching you and The Kitten Lady for the past 3 weeks! I'm SO glad I found the Kitten Lady videos as soon as I got them home because I didn't know how to stimulate them to go potty and I didn't even know what questions to ask a vet/rescuer over the phone! I'll tell you what though, they are all healthy little mojito kitties! In just one week they are going to the vet for their shots (I did talk to the vet and they said to wait until then for their first vet visit based on some questions they asked me) and one of the kittens already has a new family who have fallen in love with her through photos/videos. I am now in love with fostering kittens and I'm eager to continue fostering whenever I can!

I am typically an optimist, but I do have one fear. That is, when people start going back to living life, they may give up on these fosters. Suddenly they don't have as much time for them. My hope is that those people will fall in love with the very pets they didn't really consider anything more than a quarantine companion. I hope many of the foster parents end up adopting... And I think many will. Actually, it's the ones that are adopting that concern me because fostering is, by it's very nature, a temporary situation. But if you adopt, make sure you're in it for the long haul, please. I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and sane!!!! 😻🤗💙😻💙🤗😻

We had two boys come from us from some kind of scary place, I don't know what. I didn't see one of them for THREE WEEKS. He stayed in a covered bed the whole time. I had to play hours with his brother before I even saw his nose peak out. It was another three weeks before I could touch him. But I was so richly rewarded. He became the most snuggly sweet little boy. I became friends with his new family and even went to visit. He and his brother are now happy little princess in their new home. Fostering is so worth every moment and every setback.

Jackson .... You said that the adoption is going down in the US. On the contrary, in Sweden the adoption during the pandemic goes up significantly. I have contact with several shelters across Sweden and the people there have up to their necks to handle adoption applications. I have to mention, though, that not everyone may adopt a cat or a dog in Sweden. There are strict rules over here to safeguard animals’ rights and health. One can’t just pass by or call a shelter to adopt a cat or a dog. One has to first fill in an application and provide a lot of information. Then, you get an interview, so the shelter management determines if you have the mental health and the financial capabilities to qualify for adopting an animal. After that, 2 representatives will come to visit your home to further qualify you and the place. If approved, it’s not over yet. Then, you get the animal to stay with you for approximately 4 weeks to see if things work out. If the things don’t go in the right direction, you don’t get to keep the animal. The application fee (~50 Euro) won’t be refunded. One last thing: I don’t know about the US, but adopting a cat from a shelter in Sweden costs totally between 150-250 Euro (application fee included). The animal doesn’t come for free even she/he is from a shelter. This adoption process takes time and costs money, but ensures that the animals end up in good homes, as having a pet comes with great responsibility. By the way, there are no (absolutely ZERO) homeless dogs in Sweden, but it’s estimated that there are around 10,000 feral/homeless cats out there. Keep up with great videos!

Jackson, thank you for being in this world. We need people like you- kind, gentle and knowledgeable. Just to let’s you know, a white cat- Jurand, came today to my family as a foster cat. I called the shelter and asked them to allow me to foster the cat that in their opinion most needed a home now. Jurand hasn’t got a tail, he isn’t a kitten, and he might seem “ordinary”, but in fact he’s the most lovable creature in the world and I’m going to prepare him to move on into the world when he is ready, so that I can help another beautiful creature. Best regards, Jo

I've been fostering kittens during this quarantine. I'm only on my second litter of kittens while still having most of the first. They were all found outside and need socialization to get used to people. It's not easy, the kittens don't want to me touched and some of them need eye medicine that I need to apply and the newest batch has worms which was pretty gross when I saw vomit with worms in it. My first litter have come to the point of associating me with their wet food so they all purr and come running when I come in their area. Being able to pet them and have them purr and rub on me is rewarding after weeks of them running away from me.

He wasn't a shelter cat though he was a kitty from a litter, but he missed his mom and his siblings... It's weird to remember that kitty, since the cat died over a decade ago.

I can't foster. If I do, I will just end up adopting. I fall in love too easily. Instead I adopted 2 cats from the local shelter who are the more undesirable ones. The one has FIV, which scares potential owners away from them and the other is shy to the point of being nasty to new people. Integrating them with my other 2 cats is going well so far.

My foster had a very rough life. Stomatitis - teeth removed. Probably punished for eliminating outside the litter box. I have a feeling she was locked away in crates or whatever. She hated the isolation when I brought her home - probably thought she was being punished. She still hates boxes. Will not be picked up - runs and hides, sometimes even when I pet her with two hands. She’s even skittish at meal times - I think she was ambushed while eating. She never goes into base camp anymore. Doing so much better now - walks around like she owns the place. Loves to play, loves petting. I hope I’ve come close to normalizing her.

She got pregnant on the street, had a kitten the day she was brought in, and raised that kitten til it had a forever home. And she still has such a big mom instinct and such a loving personality. I wanna try having foster kittens to help them, but I also kinda hope shell help care for the babies

QUESTION! If you're adopting a cat that was very malnourished, should you still do meal times or is free feeding ok while they get their weight back? When do you start doing meal times? This week I adopted a cat that was severely undernourished. She spent 2 weeks with a foster before coming to us and she's really put good weight on her since she was rescued. However, now that she's finally actually eating, I don't know if leaving food out for her is ok, or if we should set some time limit on it, like a month or when she hits a certain weight. (We're slowly transitioning from the shelter's dry food to wet food cans and she's eating happily). She's a year and a half and looks like an 8 month old kitten.

Just a month ago sent a cat home, who was with me a bit over 8 months. When he came to me, he was so scared of humans that he was only comfortable with me out of the room. Every time I would enter a room to feed him or clean his litterbox, he would hiss and growl and get as far from me as possible. I have no idea of what has happened to me before he landed in my home, or what his story is, but when I started, I tried to at first bother him as little, as I had to (only to give food and clean the litterbox) and to get him at first used to my voice, so I would just sit behind the door of the room where the cat was and read a book out loud, and I did that for two weeks, until I didn't hear any more hissing at my voice, even though he didn't see me. Then I entered the room and sat on the floor and continued the same thing, but then he could really see me, every day he came closer and closer to me, to check me out, because curiosity won. Every time when I so much as moved my finger or something, he ran to the corner of the room where his snuggle bed was, because he was so scared. It took months to just get him to be used to me only and I had a few moments when I was just so sad and sorry for him, like I wanted to help him so bad but ran out of ideas how to help him, but then I came up with an amazing idea (warning! it won't work for everyone, so don't really try it if you are not sure what you are doing) my female cat is super friendly (she always "adopted" the kittens I fostered, by cleaning them and "teaching them" how to be a cat), so I introduced him to my female cat and she helped him understand that not all humans are bad, that some are very nice for getting the best food, tasty treats, to play with and to cuddle. And on the fifth or sixth month since he came to my life, he finally showed me what kind of a cat he really is, he wanted lots of attention, just by talking to him, if he didn't know where I was, he would meow until I went to him or called out for him to come and find me, like, he did a total 180 degree turn to better. According to the vet he must be about 7-8 years old, and has been homeless for a long time, if not his entire life, he had no microchip and he wasn't neutered (which all got done when he was under my care). But now I have to recover from this kitty emotionally, because I tend to get attached to an animal, that I have been taking care of, so fostering is a bit hard for me, not the fostering itself, but the moment when you have to say good bye to the animal, who has been living with you, loved you and bonded with you. Every time I have sent a cat home, I feel like a piece of my heart went with them and it takes some time to recover until I feel that I'm ready to take another homeless cat in. And I don't really like to foster kittens, don't get me wrong, because kittens are more likely to be adopted, but what about the ones that are scared and terrified of people? They will be most likely put down, even though with some time and some work you will get a very adoptable cat, but shelters don't have the resources for that and most of the people won't give them a chance, so that's why I have specialized on "feral" cats, I get them socialized and used to people and other cats.

My adopted cat Chicken was given up on a week before her 15th birthday by owners that had owned her for her whole life. They had finally had a baby only to find out - the baby is deathly allergic to cats! So I got my lady on her birthday off the kill list (15 year old cats with no teeth aren’t very adoptable). A lot of health issues and a grand later, she is happy and healthy and very snuggly.

I am glad I saw this. While I am not foster but adopting, ". Tommy" has had a rough life. I have done 4 of the things you suggested already and hope he will trust me soon. (I have also used the slow blinking and yesterday got one back - better than nothing). I am writing here because I thought it was interesting that back in March, 2020 you mentioned that adopting was not happening much. Well I respectfully disagree. I have applied to 4 different cat adoption services, only was contacted by 2 and was consistently told that they were so overloaded with people wanting to adopt because they were staying home more, that it might be months to process adoptions. THAT WAS 4 MONTHS AGO. I just got my cat less than one week ago! You just never know how things are going to work out. haha

Our foster cat got so scared moving to us, she got constipated. We felt so bad for her. And she got into the tightest space possible. There a gap between two panels underneath the counter. She found it, pushed it open and hid underneath the counter - behind the panel!! I went in one day and I was like... where is she?!?! We got her out, blocked it off and she found another hole, leading above the counters!!! So once again, behind panels. At that point I felt like giving up on her. Combined that with her not eating and pooping for several days and I was really thinking it's not going to work. It was a slow process to get her to trust us, but she opened up more and more as soon as we let our male cat into the room. She threw herself on him and wanted love, but he wasn't too keen so smacked her away. From that point on, it's been progressing forward. I won't say she's perfectly trusting of us, she's not. But we've come to the point where she's coming up for cuddles, she's scent marking us, meowing for food and even sleeping outside of her safe space. We had a lil cube with a cat tunnel where she spent a lot of the time. That's still her "safe space". That's hers. So when she migrated from the kitchen to the rest of the apartment, we put it underneath a nightstand next to our bed. She sometimes goes under the bed, but not all the time. We're going to move in June and I'll definitely block off her bed access then. We're going to get bigger shelf and be able to "catify" the space more, both with more shelves and cat trees, but also a big bookshelf and so on. And also, we decided to keep her. Couldn't let her experience another move with different people again.

Just fostered a cat from the Rspca for the quarentine here in the UK. Less than 48 hours in and she's doing well. Coming out after 8pm to explore whilst we have dinner and watch TV. She ate for the first time this morning which felt like a big step. She has managed to squeeze herself under a chest of draws but will leave her there till this evening then try and block it off so she uses her cat tree (we have put the towel that was in her carrier in there so it has her sent). Constantly worrying we aren't doing the right thing but it seems like you just gotta go with the flow and let her acclimate. Any other advice welcome. Had cats all my life growing up but never fostered. Excited. Happy. And in love with our little one.

Kitten update! 7 days in. She now eats two meals a day. She enjoys watching us and the world out the window from level 2 of her cat tree (it's still covered so she's still hiding). She comes out and eats meals a day (breakfast and dinner) And tonight she played with us for the first time. (We have a string on a chop stick). Just shows that if you follow jackson's advice you can give your cat a loving, safe and catified home.

We are now day 12. On day 10 she was coming out in the evening anf hanging with us as we watched TV. She would lay in the hammock on the TV. And even ate chicken from our hands. However yesterday my partner maybe being a bit eager approached her yesterday morning and tripped over the cat litter tray. This freaked her out. She has now been heading from us for 2 days. Not eating at all or playing with us. We are really gutted that we had made so much progress and now it's all gone back to the start. She isn't in her Cat tree she is back under the book case. But that's okay. We will carry on from the top. Get her back to where she was on day 10.

What a turn around. Day 17.shes back. She sleeps almost all the days but she relaxes in her Cat tree rather than hiding. She doesn't eat till dinnertime and we are not sure how to change this. I'm just happy she trusts me enough to touch her for the first time.

hey. so i took a kitten off the streets, she was sick, had an abcess below the jaw, ears infected with some bacteria and mites, also she got some hairless spots on her body because of a fungus and she has an infection to one of her eyes. took her in (I already have a tomcat 1,5 years) and began to treat her. the treatment for her ears, eye and skin took like two weeks. when i found her, she was on the strees for like a week until i was able to foster her. she was soo loving, she was comming to me when she saw me, stood in my lap sleeping peacefully, making biscuits, buuttt when i was finally able to take her in and treat her, all the magic had gone away. she is avoinding me now, meawing when i take her into my arms and tries to escape. i am wondering if i should adopt her or give her to adoption. now, i wonder, will she ever return to that loving behavior towards me or that ship had sailed? because i already have a cat that is fussy about staying into my arms. he's that kind of cat that wants to be loved with the eyes :))

This is the situation in currently in. My spayed female is not accepting the unspayed foster we brought home last week. I know it's only been a week, and I've been doing everything I learned here. I didn't realize bringing an unspayed cat home was going to cause such a fuss. I do now. They have separate spaces, etc and at this point I have them eating together without the door between them, but that is the only time my cat is civil to the foster. But they were friendly at first meeting until my cat smelled the foster's butt. Then all hell broke loose. It's frustrating because surgeries at the shelter are on hold because of the shut down so I don't know when this cat can get spayed. She's a wonderful, friendly cat, and we would adopt her in a minute if the two cats started to get along. I don't know what to do at this point.

That said, I did adopt a beautiful new kitty barely two weeks ago, because I needed some comfort in this time... I'm hoping her foster parents were freed up to help out another kitty! Edit: I also paid double her adoption fee because she, and helping out other animals, are worth every penny.
