This video shows 5 tips on how I grow several varieties of salad plants in just one small raised garden bed. We cover lettuce, spinach, and other salad crops to get the most out of a small space in the garden. Thanks for your support!

I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

1. Grow at the right time of the year. Grow in cool temps 2. Small regular fertilizer feeding Watered down weak feeding 3. Keep watered. Not dry ...not too wet or standing in water 4. In small bed grow what you like to eat ... pluck out most of those you eat less of. 5. Harvest regularly .... eat often... will continue growing...then let them grow to seed.

...but will they ripen if l pick them?
@jeanniewahine5443
@jeanniewahine5443 2 жыл бұрын
@@dianemuller9983 you can pick the outer leaves at any time to eat lettuce, there is no ripe period. However, if you are referring to letting the lettuce reach a full head (for heading types), then removing the outer leaves may delay the heading a little, but not a lot, as long as you don't remove too much at once. You specifically remove outer leaves and not the new, center tips, so you don't stop the growth.

I grow a lot of loose leaved salad crops, way more than the family can eat. As you said, key to continual harvesting is to keep pruning/trimming leaves. Even if we can't eat them, the chooks will happily eat them ....or they go in the compost bin.

Great vid mate. I've got a strip in my raised wicker garden bed of "5 colour lettuce" I got from Bunnings..... FOUR years ago! It just won't die. I hardly touch them other than picking the odd bits for us or the ducks n chickens! We get the good leaves and the birds get any the bugs may have chewed on! I think I've maybe watered them with seaweed solution a few times but that's it otherthan the odd monthly watering Amazingly lucky with this stuff 😀

Thank you for being so ready to share. I'm going for diversity in case one fails, so kale (red russian, black tuscan and a green one), corn salad, tatsoi red, sorrel, wild rocket, parsley, oregano, chives (existing from summer), nasturtium, a lettuce blend (from seed), beetroots for the leaves first, and swiss chard. I am having fun growing seed ready for succession. I saw and ice berg lettuce last week for $6.50 and I knew it's time for growing, and learning all I can in this time. Seedlings are in short supply but starting with a few and then seeds for their succession. If all else fails I am going to have fabulous leaves in my stir-fries, soups and salads! Having hope and being busy in the garden is good for our well-being, and eating green is good for our immune system. Let this Covid19 time be the making of us all.

Thank you so much for the information on lettuce. It's a crop that my family absolutely loves, but we've had issues growing. The 5 tips definitely came in handy this summer because I did research and find lettuces for warmer temperatures. The best tip was the feeding/fertilizing in small amounts.

Thanks Mark, I’m learning a lot by watching your videos. Can you please do a video on saving and storing the seeds?
@Terrorcooky1
@Terrorcooky1 2 жыл бұрын
On his channel you find a series of (i think 5) videos on how to save different types of seeds (dry, wet, fruit trees...) and he talkes about the storing if I remember correctly. I think he used clear bags and stored them in something like a file cabinet for most of them. But therefore the seeds really need to be dry, otherwise they rot. Essential might be that they are stored at a dark and chilled place so they dont get the feel that it is the right time to start growing.

Before I got a greenhouse I had snow on my lettuce granted it only lasted for a few hours but it survived and we continued to eat it [very tasty]. This happened 4 or five times during our winter months. This was done in hydroponics, but this is not the normal for crops in ground. As a old farmer and continual learner I appreciate your right on advice.

This is just what I was looking for - I learned a lot! Nice video and helpful tips! I had not realized how much the salad garden needed to be fed during the season, I had tended to feed on both ends of the season instead. I will also keep that watering up, funny - I think of this with fruit producing but backed off a little on the lettuce. The season timing was a Powerful tip as well - some items are just more forgiving. Thanks for taking the time to do this Awesome Video ! So timely!
