Very true, though we do have the option of firing off a few more frames without spooking our quarry. I often take a "safety shot" first then frame up properly, send my eye around the frame, and slow myself down before I hit the shutter again - and the second shot is almost always better.

This advice needs to be taken to heart by ALL hunters, regardless of their weapon of choice. The rifle hunter is being bombarded with ridiculous marketing and television that displays the “full potential” of rifles, being used on game at 800, 900, or 1000 yards. This is simply unethical for the same reasons you spoke of with bow hunting at beyond 40 or 50 yards. Wonderful, simple and applicable hunting ethics from a man who clearly knows what he’s talking about. Thank you! This encourages me to keep learning how to be a better hunter each time I get into the woods.

Best advice I've heard in a long time. Agreed 100 percent on everything you outlined. Add one thing. Read the terrain. I live in hill country with ridges, hollows, and flats. Over a period of time I have learned to read where game is most likely to travel. It works, but it took a lot of snow days, getting up early and following deer tracks all day. Studying the animal and knowing your surroundings is the biggest part of the game and the most enjoyable. Anybody can sling an arrow or pull a trigger.

I got my first recurve (45#) last Christmas. I've been practicing since then, during lockdown. I have room to shoot up to 30 yards in my back yard, but I noticed it really does take the arrow a long time to cover that distance. Since then, I've been practicing between 5-20 yards and plan on learning to "get close". Excellent tips!

Great points all for beginners. Listen to this guy. I started with a Crosman 1377 pellet pistol and a 45# Bear Alaskan bow and learned to get close and killed a lot of game with them. When I got older and moved up to a .22 I filled my bag limit on squirrel almost every time I went out. Then when I got to where I was deer hunting I fill both my buck and doe tag every year on opening day typically. This all stems from points patience and time in the woods...

I got my first recurve bow today, and I also got my first pair of moccasins - all because of watching your videos. I am planning to go camping and scouting the first 5 days of July, and will be taking my bow and my muzzleloader with me. The muzzleloader is for wild pig. As far as the bow, I'm planning to primarily just practice with it in the woods, but if I come across a rabbit, and get close enough with a good shot available, I'll sling an arrow its way.

Agree on everything except moving fast to cover ground. Where I hunt if you move fast you move loudly as it’s all deadfalls and thick brush. Careful movement and smart use of binoculars is what works for me. Everything else is right on! Good video

Most bow videos if not all say to practice at long distance not to hunt at long distances, if you can shoot well at 60 or more meters in practice your going to be a very confident at 20 meters and having confidence in your ability to shot a bow is a massive factor when comes to hunting with a bow whatever sort of bow it is.

With a heavy arrow 10 grains per pound of draw weight, if you hit a rib or the shoulder blade, a blunt or not very sharp broadhead will not give you the penetration you need to hit the heart or pass through both lungs. A solid and razor sharp broadhead will cut through a rib bone and, depending on what animals you are hunting, usually pass through the animal entirely so you have better blood trails and the animal will expire in a much more humane manner

I remember reading from one of the pioneer bowhunters notes who studied American Indian bow hunting with the actual tribes. He keep hearing about one Indian who never missed a deer and in fact only carried one arrow when he went hunting. He finally had the apportunity to meet this renowned deer hunter. As they talked about deer hunting and what equipment he used and after a lot of interaction with the Indian he finally thought to ask him at what distance he shot most of his deer. The Indian indicated the distance by stretching his arms out, a distance of approximately five feet.

I love to get close. During the hunt or in the off season. I often get so close i could almost reach out and touch the. Closest kill shot was with a compound and under 10 yards. I do miss a lot of opportunities because I sometimes wait too long

Poundage is not really an important factor, what matters is how fast does your bow shoot that arrow, how heavy your arrow is for penetration, how sharp is your broadhead, how close to your target you are. There are many youtube videos out there that will prove that poundage is not really a big factor.

arrow head weight, arrow shaft straightness, wind, and the direction the feathers are pointing. Skill matters a bit as well, so does the tiller of your bow.

I was injured to the point of disability in 2016. I hunted with primitive equipment and was about to take the final dive by giving up the trade points and going to stone. I have little trouble closings distance to less then 25 yards ,usually, I can draw 45 lbs but my comfort range is now 40lbs . A fat cry from the 58 I hunted with before. After almost 5 years I no longer hold out the hope the metal in my shoulder will let me get any better. My question is is 40lbs enough to ethically take deer and hog with stone? Oh, thanks for the resources to learn how to make stone tools. The squirrels and rabbits of ga don't like you! I appreciate your contribution to my recovery.

best of luck on your recovery! 40 lbs is a bit light for my taste with stone points, but if you shoot a fast flight string you can get some extra fps. A lot also depends on your draw length. If you can shoot a 500grain arrow about 140 fps you should be just fine

Hey Ryan. I’m going to a WMA this week, and it’s my first time. I’ll be using a laminated recurve, and I am looking for both pig and deer. Any tips on locating hogs during the cold weather? I’m completely new to hog hunting, and was wondering how to quickly locate them on a vast piece of property.

just cover as much ground as possible to find really fresh sign. Pigs relocate a lot so recent sign doesn't mean too much. You want to look for sign made hours before and start combing that area

Number 5 is dead on, couldn't agree more. I am convinced that knowing how to get close (without feeders and such) makes for a better hunter, period. Knowing how to naturally attract a deer, to call one in. This is what its all about. It just makes for a better hunter, a more skilled hunter. Here's a controversial statement: successful primitive/traditional bowhunters are in a class of their own...the cream of the crop.

Appreciate this one a lot. It took me 8 seasons to kill my first deer with a bow. Since then every deer I've killed with any weapon has been under 30 yards. A kid at the school where I work was bragging about killing a deer at 175 yards. When asked about my dee, I told him it was a 4 yard shot. He asked why I would want to be so close. Because I can.

I agree with everything you said on this video about moving around covering ground and getting close But I think there's one thing that was left out and that is a target-rich environment really makes a big difference. You get a lot more chances to practice getting close when there's something to get close to. When you hunt in places like the South or the Midwest where there are a lot of deer or pigs there's a lot more opportunity to get shots or to stock on animals. Where I live in the Southwest it is very difficult to get close to Deer especially getting within 50 yards is very very difficult. Opportunities deal rise but they are few and far between. In this instance I really think it's important to be able to use your equipment accurately further than 20 yards. I would love to hunt in places where you can actually get less than 20 yards from animals and maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me in my experience getting within 50 yards is almost impossible.

a target rich environment does really help a lot, but the principals are the same either way. For me, hunting in Florida, it's definitely not a target rich area either. No where near the populations like the mid west, but I am still inside 15 yards of deer fairly regularly here in FL. Some terrains, like out west, do make it much harder as well. When I lived in Montana for a couple years, I had the best luck getting close to deer about 50 yards before or after a creek crossing, while hiding in little stands of willow or red osier.

Ryan, is there any way to get river cane plants to transplant down here in South Florida? Im trying to re introduce them anywhere I can as I've read that they were almost entirely made extinct by early European settlers and that they used to grow pretty much everywhere. I'd love to see them make a comeback. Tried ordering 5 plants from a nursery in TN but they arrived DOA.

they can be tough to transplant. I have found you have to have a pretty sizable root ball to go with them. They don't propagate nearly as well as bamboo.

I can do either but I prefer to use my rifle. I just don’t like to see an animal suffer and my 300 Win ends the suffering in seconds not minutes. I’ve seen some terribly wounded deer by archers. Walking around with an arrow stuck in them. Sad.

It blows my mind when people raise their bow above their heads and draw then level it to shoot ,if you're going to hunt you've got to draw straight from the body ,and most hunt with bow weights they cant hold and think that if they draw a 80lb bow they can draw a 80 longbow or recurve and guys like us know this isn't gonna work, I always tell people stop thinking oh I can shoot that 80lb bow if they can because I'm stronger ,nope doesn't work like that start with 45lbs and go from there or even lighter weight but you've gotta train

HuntPrimitive yeah it’s crazy here unfortunately . Gods honest we’re a live north Northumberland am surrounded by the duke of Northumberland’s land the place is over run with roe deer tons a them . But they are for the land of the gentry to stalk and shoot here not us peasants lol . used to go lamping for rabbits with the air rifle but quite often you would switch the light on the fields would be alive with green eyes looking back then a mass stampede through the field woods etc and scare everything away they would rather let the rabbits catch mixy horrible man made disease used to cull them then let folk responsible folk at that go and harvest them so sad really but what a you to do . Hopefully win the lottery and my daughter n myself a moving to the states lol . A wish . The worse hunting story I've heard, a guy on youtube said he was bow hunting for a moose, and the moose was facing toward him. He thought he could shoot it in the chest and right when he let the arrow loose the moose opened its mouth and the arrow went right down its throat, and he never recovered the moose.

Ahh ya no on the fast, good on the rest. I like your channel but you do hunt private reserve pigs a lot. Come & try Alberta hard hunted game & bucks weigh 400 lbs. They are a different beast entirely. Dean Partridge went in & setup cameras on a 200 + Saskatchewan whitetail they knew was there. That buck never returned for over 2 years! I can't count the times I have moved my body before my head past a rose clump only to have a giant buck or bull elk or moose bust me as he was watching from a cut in bush 50 feet away & at times close to where I parked truck. I have killed game close to truck simply by not rushing into a new area or scouting.
