@Cassandra only sprinkle fine soil on top of the seedlings. If you're planting too deep don't make finger holes like Mark did in the video. You'll plant them even deeper if you have issues with that now. Just fill your pot with soil. Soak seeds in water for a few hours. Water the soil in the pot first. Drain seeds from water and rest them on top of the soil in the pot. Place some fine potting mix over the seedlings. You only need about a half an inch of loose fine soil over seedlings. I then use a spray bottle to mist water on the top of the soil. Just moisten it to set it. Mist seedlings with the spray bottle. Never water directly onto seedlings. They are delicate. After binge watching this type of videos for maybe 7-8 months I have started growing some veggies in my flat. No balcony, just on the window in long deep pots. I have a constant supply of big cucumbers, lots of spices like basil, thyme, mint and dill, then I have romaine lettuce which I keep on cutting the big leafs from and use in lettuce, kale , an avocado and also lavender because I heard it smells amazing fresh 😬. I have to say when I started it everyone around me kept saying I'll fail from day 1 , so don't give up 😋 if you start a small garden on your window

Since I first watched this channel, I have become a seriously avid gardener. I grew up on a 1/4 acre block in Adelaide and we never went hungry for fresh food - we had a nectarine tree, million dollar peach, apricot, loquat, navel orange, valencia orange, grapefruit, four almond trees down the back behind the shed in the chicken run - and the old man had his market garden. We helped mum cut up the beans to jar up, help make the tomato sauce and chutney, slice up the peaches and apricots for the Fowlers Vacola preserving outfit, not to mention the jams, all stored in our little cellar under the kitchen floorboards. Lost the knack over the years but now my hands are never clean of good old mother nature's soil. This channel should be compulsory viewing for young kids today. They might learn that there Ardmore wholesome things to eat than sloppy hamburgers with artificial sauce.

I can't bear getting rid of seedlings so I plant them out underneath my pine trees (not the best soil and a lot of shade) thinking if they don't make it, at least they will feed the soil. Well, I did that to a couple of kale seedlings and now I have full blown kale plants in between my pine trees 🤣

To add to #5, when you thin out the extra seedlings from a cell, instead of pulling out the extra ones, use a small pair of scissors to trim the unwanted plants off at the soil level so that you don't disturb the soil for the healthy one you want to remain. Also the roots from the unwanted seedlings will break down and become nutrients for the remaining seedling.

Hi mate I love your channel. I want to share my experience. I live in the Philippines, temp 30C (86F) all year round, so this might be irrelevant to many of your viewers, but here goes. I was SOOO disheartened that my seeds never came up; I planted them in coco-peat and perlite, with a spot of vermicompost and left them under the bathroom sink, fairly shaded. Nothing came up at all. Ever. Yet most of my seeds direct in the ground germinated. Last week I said to my wife that I was going to plant the seeds then just leave them outside in starter pots. Within 24 hours I had 95% plus germination of radishes and carrots. I think that direct sunlight is ok for germination - it sure surprised me,

Hi Mark. Thank you. I grew spaghetti squash in Sydney in spring and summer. Two plants. About ten fruits. Easy. Slice length ways. Put face down in baking pan with cup of water. Bake. When knife goes thru skin easily is done. Use fork to scrap out. Needs flavour added

Thanks for the video Mark! Its our second year growing veg here in the UK, last year we were blessed with a magnificent early summer and all our seedlings flourished. This year, the late frosts have harmed so many of the seedlings, which we've found out the hard way!!

Another good point is to soak those seeds first then place in soil. I use soil from the previous year to raise seedlings. They come up in about 2 days. Maybe 3.

I live in the north of England and we can get some late frosts. I can cover some of my plants but not all. I tend to sow anything I know I might need to delay planting out into a small pot rather than a seed tray. Then I can put compost at the bottom with a layer of seed medium at the top. If I need to leave them longer before planting out, I know the young plants have the nutrients from the compost.

This year I’m only using peat moss to grow my seeds. Here in Northern California we have a lot of fungus spores in the air from the ocean breeze carrying it over so any material that has nutrients in it will impact the seeds negatively. Then I use a seaweed liquid fertilizer and feed them when they have sprouted 2 leaves. I keep them in their containers until temperatures outside is above 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the evenings. That’s when I transfer them out. I totally understand what you mean about those sneaky freezes in Spring. So I have learned to wait until May to transplant them. Thanks for sharing your tips.

I always had problems with mold, no matter how expensive the seed rising soil or how careful I was. I now put my seed raising soil in the microwave or in the oven for a bit, heat it and then let it cool and it works just like a charm. When they are a bit bigger I add a bit of root booster to make up for what I killed with the heat.

Glad even with all your experience you still just use an old screwdriver to make a hole and dib in! Some good tips here, learning is doing! I find the little greenhouses help indoors to stop the heating drying the seeds out when it is too cold to propogate them outside.

I have a growing season of about 5 maybe 6 months here in Maine, USA. Last fall I built an indoor grow room with grow lights in my house. Most seeds can be started 4 to 6 weeks before outdoor planting. Even Cannibis, which is completely legal here, can be grown here and the largest plants i grow take about 7 months to bud for harvest. Sometimes I move the plants outdoors and let them grow taller. I find myself with 15 ft plants when I do this.

Nice, I'm a little further north in Canada but I'm hoping to be ready for some indoor growing over this winter... So far I just start things indoors in spring but I've yet to get a grow light and really try more long term indoor growing. Trying covered raised beds this year for a little extra heat, and I'll convert to a shade when things get warmer. Good luck with your growing this season! Any basic tips for setting up indoors?

@@TheMistyBlueLounge if you are adding a room or using one you already have make sure to cover your walls and ceiling with some sort of reflective material. I used thermal emergency blankets. They have grow tents but rooms give you more space.

In the northern hemisphere it's Edamame planting season :) I just plant mine in medium-sized pots and they grow to their full height. I can also space them appropriately to avoid spreading diseases fro one to another.

yeah i just killed some of my tomatos transplanting them like in the video i might have been a little tough on them. But in the end they will all die together if i don't split them up. They are already 5 inches tall, sadly it's not warming up fast here still in the 30s at night i really need to get them out in the garden.

This was really great advice! I made a newbie mistake this spring with my yellow onions. I started them from seed, which I'd never tried doing before. They grew amazingly well for about 3.5 weeks and then I noticed they were not as nice looking. I thought, oh no! They are too small to transplant into the big garden, they were about 3 inches high at the time. Well...I just kept them inside and continued to water them every few days. They got spindly on me. I finally realized Umm...yeah Rachal time to transplant these poor things! I did, and boy oh boy it was touch and go all last month with them. I am happy to say that while they don't look as robust as my red onions (I planted from bulbs, much easier!) they survived my mistake! Thank you for stressing on that fact of transplanting them while smaller and not crowding them so much.

I agree Mark, is worth the money to buy good soil for seeds, they are like our kids, they need the best start in life that you can give them. I bought 2 40 litre cheap multi-purpose compost but you get what you pay for, it was absolute rubbish so guess I will just dress my lawn with it.
