Thanks for all the great tips. A garden without birds would seem incomplete.

I love that you are teaching about this. thank you.. one important thing, please note.. Baby birds need caterpillars, as they are soft, and most nutritious. So, we need to plant for butterflies and lovely moths, many are specific to certain plants. People can get a list of the Native Plants specific for their area. Doug Tallamy has made many KZbins on the subject. Please see and enjoy. Thank you again.

I so totally agree. The best way to control garden pests is by increasing natural predators in your garden, be it birds or hedgehogs. And they are so lovely anyway....

House sparrows are enemies of bluebirds. They will destroy their nests and kill even adult bluebirds. My neighbors think it’s cute that house sparrows use bluebird boxes for raising their young and now there’s a huge flock of house sparrows running the show. Feeding house sparrows is a mistaken kindness if you want to establish a flock of bluebirds. Great video!

How can you prevent them though? I live in the Midwest and I attract all kinds of birds but won’t the same food attract them all?
@dankeener3307
@dankeener3307 4 ай бұрын
It’s true they’re attracted to the same food. The best thing to do is not allow them access to bird houses. Options are to provide houses with a 1-inch hole for smaller birds to use or if you provide a house with a larger hole keep removing the nest if sparrows take over. To be successful the whole community needs to join in. There’s the challenge.

YES! They are the best bug control ever. And they are so cute. Over the years we had so many feathered friends in our garden and never had a problem with bugs, aphids... Imagine the little robin, first year alone, second year two of them at the birdfeeder, one year later mom, dad and a little one! What a joy I had. Later I found their nest in the yew hedge. Thank you for this very informative and well arranged video. Your garden looks stunning! Best wishes, happy gardening and stay safe, Hanni.

I'm so glad you mentioned to wait until spring to clean up. I wait until late spring because I know that beneficial insects like ladybugs are hibernating in my bark chips and leaves. I watched Orioles coming for long strands of grasses to weave into their nests. One thing I learned is that birds have a pecking order and so only so many birds will feed at the feeder while the others wait for their turn. Providing cover for them close to the feeder allows me to see those birds waiting in the wings for their turn.

In Wisconsin they are available at stores like FleetFarm and Farm and Fleet. The brand in the current FleetFarm add has the API (brand) one on sale. I also have another on a tall wood box that is more shallow for the smaller birds. Birds here enjoy the water all winter long. I would think most bird food supply stores also have the heated bird baths.

I am thinking about getting Winterberries, but I have dogs. Does your dog get into the Winterberries or any other berry type plants?
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim. Our dog Grace did want to eat the winterberry when she was a puppy. She is never outside alone, but it's definitely something to think about. Holly might be a safer option since the leaves would deter our dogs, or place the winterberry in a location your dog does not access to.

The birds at 2:28 are called house sparrows and they’re super invasive in North America. If you ever sees them using a house, plug the hole immediately. I know it’s sad, but they are very aggressive and kill our native birds for the boxes, so it’s very necessary.
