This is a fantastic video! About 20 years ago I built and put up about 6 bluebird boxes in hopes of attracting bluebirds. Instead, all the boxes were inhabited by tree swallows. I quickly came to appreciate and love them, especially for their eating of flying insects. I've seen a few bluebirds in my yard here and there in recent years, so I think I'll build some more boxes and tailor them more for bluebirds. I don't mind too much the other birds taking them because I love having all birds around, but I sure would be extra happy to have my favorite song birds move in. Thank you for making such an informative video!

You can find info on how to keep tree swallows and bluebirds away from each other. Sometimes you have to remove the swallow nest a few times, they will build elsewhere, bluebirds will have problems doing so.

Live in Colesville, MD, 2020 pair of Bluebirds visited my garden mid February providing birdbath and provided dried mealyworms feeder. Bluebirds built completed nest in front yard in a pvc Gilbertson nesting box on March 26 and layed 1st egg on the 28th. With 5th egg on April 1st. The 5 eggs hatched on April 15. The 5 nestlings fledged 19 days on May 4th. Female completed 2nd nest May 21st and layed 5th egg May 27. Bluebird nestlings fledged 15 days old June 25th.

Have been having blue birds in my yard for years . This past May 19 I was fortunate to see five nestlings successfully take flight! They have stayed around as the parents have already started another nest and momma bird is setting on about 4 eggs. Keep seeing the young ones flying around in the yard from trees to bushes and back to the first bird house even. They like to perch atop the birdhouse. Believe when this second brood has successfully left this second nest...they will build once more in the first house. It’s common for total of three broods from March through July! Lovely birds

I'm waiting for a clutch to hatch any day. 5 eggs. Another fellow bluebird 🐦 house just had a bunch fly off. We've had two different famines renesting in our houses for years. I assume it's the same families living in the houses every year. Ours are eastern variants. I live in North Alabama.

Thank you for all your time and hard work putting this Video together for us. I've been making Bluebird Nesting Boxes for over 10 yrs now, I advertise them on a local community website, it gives me a great feeling knowing, I'm making an impact on their successful reproduction. Just in my yard with 3 Nesting of 14 fletchlings, last year one didn't make it out of 15. And for all the Great people that have my Boxes, that's a lot of Bluebirds. I'm so Blessed to be able to make an impact increasing their population. A birdbath, please keep it cleaned for them, I'm going to say, besides a Nesting Box, is the best attraction to start birds to visit your area/yard. Birds will find food, somewhere, somehow, WATER definitely will make them a regular visitor, and Yes, birds Love to take a bath, sometimes it's a PARTY to them. THANK YOU, to everyone helping feed and house these gems of life. Home Tweet Home. Ted Richardson Masonry Plus Florida.

It's really great for the little chicks when they become developed enough to be fed them . It's pretty funny watching the fledglings learning to feed themselves. The only thing is that we really need the bluebirds to eat as man bugs and larvae as possible. It's great to feed them dried meal worms in the winter especially . Other birds like them too Cardinals, Robins ect .

Great guide on attracting Bluebirds !. I actually pair two boxes each season 15 to 20 feet apart, not so much to take care of our English house sparrow problem, but to allow tree swallows and bluebirds peacefully co exist in over lapping territory instead of them competing with each other for the same nest box. It works here in the north east. As far as feeding bluebirds goes, I feed dried mealworm year round from an enclosed feeder. They eat from it year round. Winter when food is scarce and breeding season for the nestlings. They also will take crushed egg shell in the breeding season from a platform feeder.

Thank you for this extremely informative and concise video. I have a pair of Bluebirds flying back and forth from one box to the next, it's so funny watching them as they cannot decide which one to nest in. They literally spent an entire day going back and forth, 2 hours on top of one house, then in and out if the other, I think they were deciding on the safer bet as we have several cats roaming around. I did end up putting up a flimsy garden fence around the post to deter the cats from climbing the wood post, they won't be able to stand on the thin wire. Birds rule at my house - Parrots, chickens, and wild birds....God's little creations 🐦🐥🐓🦜!

Sealed it tight to stop drafts except the floor in case rain gets thru the entrance hole. Filled it with cattail fluff for insulation. I have 8 boxes already and adding more to my 8 acres. One of our our bluebird pairs abandoned a house after she laid 4 eggs, moved to another bluebird house and had 5 more eggs last year, which they raised to fledge. we don't know why they left the other house, they made the nest, had the 4 eggs and then abandoned it. we have bluebirds every single year, and there are lot of myths out there about them, such as they do not need to be in the open, or in open fields, the houses do not need to be white, they will nest in a house on a fence, and they will abandon a nest with eggs in it. ours like the house in the garden. lots of bugs to eat.

Thank you for the video. I live in Southern Indiana. I usually have bluebirds at least in one of my three houses but I spent all of March and half of April removing house sparrow nests and finally gave up. My neighbors have spotted bluebirds in the area as of the beginning of April but I could not get them to nest in my boxes this year. I have not seen any in our area so far though. I am wondering if the abundance of house sparrows are keeping them away. I will try some of your suggestions that I have not tried before. Wish me luck!

Great job..learned a lot.especially the use of your shed. As an ex big time pigeon guy when I was a kid, have fondness for their cousins, the doves. I have doves that next in my Leland cypress trees, and do not want them injured. Do u see all that get trapped in your trap? Any solution for this? Thank you, very much for doing this video

We are looking forward to reestablishing our bluebird population to our yard. We were so sad to find 4 male bluebirds had frozen in our birdhouse during a two week extended period of extreme cold weather this winter. We will try your ideas. I am wondering about your thoughts on a roosting house this winter.

I am having a difficult time attracting bluebirds to my yard. None have ever come to the bluebird feeder and the mealworms are always eaten by starlings with an occasional wren. My parents live about one mile away and they have so many bluebirds. My yard is open and is more ideal for bluebirds versus my parents' yard which has heavy woods behind it. I guess I will keep trying to attract them with mealworms and put out some bluebird houses in a couple months.

That is exactly my experience. We have had a couple of bluebirds feed early in the season, and then the starlings just take over.

This was a wonderful video! Thank you! I have a couple questions. I live in the Binghamton area of NYS in a development. Do you think it would be impossible or nearly impossible for me to get bluebirds in my yard? I have quite a few feeders out, as well as a birdbath, but the houses (human houses) are quite close together, and the only fields are up the road a way. Also, can you please give the address of your store? My sister lives in Kent, NY, and we’d love to visit your store at some point. Thanks again for the informative video!
