First time my 9 month old puppy heard thunderstorm she couldn't stop barking. Nothing worked to calm her down. So I thought of changing her mind out of it. Since she likes to eat and finding stuff, I took out some paper cups, placed a small piece of treat inside one and let her find it. It worked really well, we kept doing that for almost 30mns and she didnt notice the thunder anymore. After she felt tired and just went to sleep.

TheCakeAddict thats a great idea! My pup is also 9 months old and had a hard time with the fireworks yesterday. Looking for treats would be fun for her, too.

I have a 7 year old Akita who has been absolutely petrified of thunderstorms his whole life. I have tried EVERYTHING from thunder shirts, crates, oils, vet prescribed pills, loud music to drown out the thunder, having play time to try and give positive/distracting time during the scary times. Yup you name I've been there and nothing works, essentially all I can do is put him on a leash and force him to stay by my side during the storm, I pet him and talk to him to let him know I'm beside him. I'm just saying this to let the desperate people out there know that sometimes there is just nothing you can do and you just have to live with a scared dog

@TheDramacist2 жыл бұрын
Train the fear out of them EARLY ON. Some owner's efforts to comfort their dog actually makes it a lot worse. For example, changing your voice to a high pitched, repetitive tone when you hear the fireworks/thunder can misguide your dog into thinking you're anxious too. Think about it; high pitched, repeating words sound very much like whimpering! Avoid! Saying "OOoooOoh noooo! Fireworks?! It's ok it's ok it's ok come here come here herehere babybabybaby," is going to give your pup anxiety. Keep your voice steady, slow and soft, NOT excitable. Dont even acknowledge the fireworks or thunder. Dont look at the dog when the noise strikes. Meeting their gaze when they're fearful actually sends them the wrong message, that the noise is something to be fearful of. If the fireworks continue without a pause, just wait a few seconds and move in a steady, slow and deliberate way. Your dog will be watching you if they've hidden in the same room. The dog's response is partly learnt by picking up on your energy. Dont utter a word, dont look at the dog and dont pause what your doing when the noise starts. Wait a few seconds after the first bang, flash or rumble before acting. Dont pick your dog up, dont go to the windows or doors. These things put your dog in defensive mode. Instead, get a toy, some treats and get your dog working on earning a reward instead of just hugging them under a blanket. Keep them busy. If they break off due to more noise, ignore it and continue with the task/game. Dont get angry. Don't drag your dog out of hiding. If they wont willingly engage in the game, change the game so that the desired behaviour is more attainable. Like have them give you their paw for a treat or groom them in their safe place/hiding place as best you can. Reward with treats and praise if they independently move position in a way that makes grooming easier. Like moving towards you or showing their belly can be praised gently and calmly. Plenty of treats should be to hand! It's also important to establish a 'safe place' for your dog, preferably as a puppy by crate training. But they can learn at any age. A crate with a blanket draped over it makes a secure den. I personally prefer the fabric crates because my terrier once got her foot trapped between the bars of a metal one when she was a bouncy puppy. Luckily I was right there to see it (and hear it! 😭). Fabric ones are also lighter, easier to move, more affordable and more comfy if you want to squeeze in with your puppy during training. Seriously! Going to their den for treats and toys is a great way to teach them the crate is their safe space. Go look up videos on crate training. Before long, your dog wont care about fireworks.I can walk my 3 little dogs at night and not worry about a surprise Nov/Dec/Jan firework display! They dont give it a glance, but they do expectantly want a treat!

We have a homeopath that helps our dog because she's becoming stiff in her hips, probably due to stress, and around New Year's (when fireworks are allowed in the Netherlands) she gave us something that helped her enormously. I don't know what it's called, but every time she was shaking and really stressed out we could let her sniff it, and she calmed down almost instantly. So homeopathy is also something you could look into when dealing with stressed animals! Actually, our cat was also a lot calmer because the dog was calmer :)

So far, my 9 month old puppy has been ok with thunder and farther away fireworks. Unfortunately, last night (4th of July), we happened to be outside for a potty break when our immediate neighbor started setting off fireworks 😒 so it was extremely loud and she could see the bright red light whizzing through the sky very close to us. Understandably, she freaked out and was losing it during those very close fireworks and had a hard time the rest of the night. What worked for us (suggested by my awesome SIL) was grabbing treats and doing some simple commands: sit, down, shake, look at me. It distracted her and allowed me to give her treats and praise for doing something good, and seemed to comfort her without reinforcing a distressed reaction to the loud fireworks.

Chopper still struggles with loud thunder even though I have tried as much as I can to desensitize with recordings of thunder and treats. Also the crate doesn't help. So, what I have found helps is to break the anxious mind. What really focuses him is heeling. So, I'll ask him to heel a few times around the house and then back to place (his bed) and he's no longer anxious. I may need to do it a few times before he finally fully breaks through that anxeity and relaxes. I do this when he's afraid of something in the enviroment as well and while he's working. We also do a lot of confidence boosting things. A confident dog is not a scared dog. He's not as bomb proof as most would like in a service dog candiate but we work with it and thunder is really his biggest issue. Everything else he really takes in stride and comes to get used to it pretty quickly. Im not sure why thunder is different. But we work with it.
@McCannDogs6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Sounds like you’ve made great strides with Chopper! Giving him a task is a good way to associate his organic response with a responsibility/job that essentially distracts him. The idea that he can be safe and sound, and fulfilling a responsibility is helpful for him! We will often do something similar with a dog who stresses high to a noise or event. We will simulate the trigger and clap and cheer. With some dogs we will simulate the trigger and play a game of tug with them. Soon they’ll lose their initial “flight” response to that trigger. And they will have it replaced with a positive association. He great part is that you won’t forever have to clap/play, or play a game of tug with them every time that same stimulus happens. Because their negative response will have disappeared entirely! ~Ken

McCann Dogs Ah, that makes sense. I am well researched in all methods of dog training. Balanced training works best for Chopper. I wasn't sure why this heeling him works but just found out that it did. Chopper isn't the perfect bomb proof service dog canidate and I know that but he has made amazing strides and does a great job and I'm proud of him for that and we'll keep working on making him more bomb proof as we go along! Thank you for the information as that helps a lot to know why it works and be able to apply it to other things.

My dog was never scared before then lightning hit a pole like a half a block away from us and since then he has been super scared. Now he gets so scared anytime there’s Thunder. He starts to shake, his heart beats quickly, and he starts in a corner looking terrified. I want to help him so I am looking for ways to do that.

Cuddling with my dog to make her feel safe makes her feel better.

Watch Cesar Millan videos on this ! Exercise your dog vigorously before fireworks. Do not feed until after storms / fireworks start so that good wet food will distract their nose and mind because they are hungry. Condition them well before holidays with alternating calm and loud music until they become accustomed to drums and horns, etc. Keep calm and do not baby them. They want leadership from their person... demonstrate that you are not afraid and do they do not need to be, either!

Can you mention what essential oils can be used? We have an elderly dog and she gets so nervous even with the sound of rain, without thunder, and we can't manage to calm her dow. Even siting on us, tightly bundled in a blanket and us talking to her softly and petting her, she kips trembling and hiperventilating.

Fortunately my guy is pretty chill with thunder and fireworks, but my friends lab had a really bad scare from a nearby lightning strike when a pup, and now trembles anytime loud noises occur. Seems like PTSD as I have military family with it. They’ve recently begun to treat their PTSD with CBD (non-THC) with really good results. Any thoughts?

Well I did totall opposite of they say todo. I couldnt set there and let them shake, do grabbed them up and we cuddle together. So my dogs are 9 & 7 and have never been in a crate. If I put them in one here at the house they would scratch like crazy to get to me. I mite could try the vest thing.

Cuddling will certainly help in the short term! But it won’t be much help in the long term! I hope the Thunder shirt is helpful for you, Duane! ~Ken

I found that my hound calms with swaddling and close contact during thunder storms. She's just petrified from the flashes from the lightning.

My 12 year Shih Tzu is so afraid of storms. Nothing helps. She poops and pees if I put her in a crate and steps in it. she pees all over the floor every time it storms. Even if I take her out to potty before the storm, she still poops and pees in the floor. She keeps me up for hours if it storms in the middle of the night. I’m desperate for any help. I’ve been dealing with this since I got her. I’ve had her since she was 3 months old. ☹️

Never had a fearful dog. My current spouse has two. We have a new puppy and he has been stroking and “soothing” during storms, which I feel is causing the bad anxiety. Help!!
