You can totally use 'regular' LEDs or CFLs/T5s and other kinds of bulbs like HPS or MH as a grow light. Grow LEDs are normal LEDs, just more powerful that we would normally use in our homes. The minimum required for a medium sized plant to thrive is maybe 1500 to 3000 lumens per square foot, depends on the cultivar, so a single 8w or 10w bulb won't do much difference, you need to get higher amount of watts ( or use multiple smaller bulbs/ LED chips). Every white bulb is more or less full spectrum (slightly differs because of colour temperature, usually from 2700k warm white to 6000k cold white). Any source of light can induce photosynthesis as long as it has good PAR output (photosynthetically active radiation , the range between 400nm-700nm that plants absorb and are able to use for photosynthesis). Coming from indoor medical cannabis grower with 15+ years of experience :)

I very much enjoy your videos. Very straight forward and easy to understand. A helpful tidbit I have found is that when moving plants from outside to inside for winter or vice versa for summer, make sure the temp is the same outside as inside. It will help tremendously!

The other day I prepared my plants for the coming winter season. I moved the sensitive ones away from the window, because of a cold draft and I brought a grow light to help them grow during the cold season and I inspected and cleaned the leaves 🍃. And I also have the humidifier on during the day. I'm glad that I did everything you mentioned in this video.

I have to agree about the added clips. I've recently discovered this wonderful Channel, and I come here in VERY large part due to SMP's personable presentation. The added clips are superfluous 😊 Having said that, maybe just sprinkled here and there. I hadn't actually noticed them in other videos (so I don't know if they weren't there, or if I just didn't notice), but I had noticed comments regarding that in this video today. When I went back to review this one for the information, I did notice them, especially the more noisy ones. However, if it works for **you** as the channel creator, carry on ☺️ - I will still be watching these videos for the wonderful information and beautiful photography!

The idea of not watering the plants as much during the winter is only a great idea if your central heating doesn't create dry air. I end up watering about twice as much during the winter, because so many of my plants grow over top of radiators (unfortunately, most of my windows have radiators under them.) I just have to be very vigilant about the watering to ensure the watering is correct over the winter.

Same situation with the radiators for me. I think last winter I had to water mine once a week. My mom insists that I have to do it twice a week. I'll be buying a moisture meter so I can figure out what my plants need because this year I'm having issues.

We've just come out of winter in the southern hemisphere and I lost three plants. As soon as the temps drop below 15°c some calathea, fiddleleaf figs & maranta turn up their toes. I'm ready for next year with a plastic storage box and heat mat. I'll also check plants for minimum temps before I buy any more. Thanks. 👍

Mr. Sheffield... I find ur videos very helpful. I like gardening.. But not a perfect one. I want share my experience with one plant u were referring to... the one with orange stalks ending with broad leaves.looks like a kind of agloanema .. U said there is little information available on it. The plant I bought from a nursery had a small inflorescence on it... When it dried I crushed the pods which were looking like cardamon pods... And dropped in the soil... After about two months I c several small saplings coming up. I am excited. I live south India.

I love my water meter...when it's accurate. I've had some problems with them. I think it's because many of my plants are succulents, grown in a very gritty mix with much more pumice than soil, or even soiless mixes. The grit seems to interfere with the accuracy of water meters, and of course, succulents cannot tolerate overwatering. I also use various topdressings on many of my plants, both for looks and to deter fungus gnats, so that complicates using my finger to check whether a plant is ready for watering. My favorite solution, free if you like Chinese takeout food, is to use a clean, dry, wooden chopstick to check for moisture. For succulents, I can get the chopstick down to the bottom of the pot, and if it's still clean and dry when I take it back out, that tells me when to consider watering again. For other houseplants, I can also use a chopstick to check the top couple of inches of soil if I don't have a working water meter on hand.

For me it's the opposite. Because of the lower angle of the sun, the reflection from the snow and forced air heating, my plant keeping and watering routine doubles in the winter and i use half as much supplemental light. Only extend the use by a few hours for a few areas to compensate for the shorter days, rather than most areas for most of the day. I have only ever had one plant go dormant throughout the winter, the rest usually experience the most growth of the year.

You’ve definitely got some unique circumstances. Where do you live?
@whiskybrush3219

@@SheffieldMadePlants Central Alberta. But my situation is kind of unique i suppose. In the country, so no neighbours, and no roads in sight of my house for 5 kilometers, so snow as far as the eye can see, making for brighter light in the winter on overcast days, than a sunny day at noon middle of July. It's compensation for the terrible positioning of my house 🤣. The 80's were singlehandedly the worst decade for house construction i tell ya! They plunked a house in the middle of nowhere, on the side of a forested hill (so no sunlight coming from the west in summer ) made it face it north east and put in no south facing windows to take the edge off the heating bill . 😳

@@kbm4409 Just keep in mind that going with those kinds of lights, if its anywhere remotely at eye level, those lights are incredibly bright (regardless of the brand you go with) and will dim out the rest of the room. if the ones you choose do not have a reflector hood, you might want to fabricate one yourself. I have added a retaining edge on my plant shelves for this purpose but that's not always handy.
