Can you make it a three part series and give some of your favorite recipes for making meals out of winter squash? I will be harvesting quite a lot this year and would love some ideas for how to cook it so my family doesn't get sick of eating it all winter!

Years ago, we found a sturdy wire rack shelving unit. We keep it in the basement, as our winter squash storage. My basement isn't damp, so they last their full storage life. I've had Sweet meat and Marina di Chioggia both last a full year on those shelves.

I grew Waltham butternut last year and as an experiment I haven't touched them.. I have them all in the basement in pristine condition. If I handed you one, you'd assume it was from this year.

I’ve got two butternut squash that are about 12 months old now. I’ve had them so long I feel like I should give them a name; like slap a “Hi, my name is _____” label on them just for fun.

Thank you. Finally, have the information I've needed for a while I absolutely love butternut and buttercup squash But storing it was the problem. I had purchased quite a number of winter squash at the last farmer's market Now I know it will keep in the coolest room of the house.

This year I grew winter squash for the first time in my new front yard food forest. My harvest was very poor, two butternut squash out of four plants. 😂 So I bought 8 butternut squash from Costco, $2.50 each and will use your excellent tips for storing them. Of course I’ll try again next year as I continue to improve soil fertility, and try different varieties.

Squash is such a great crop to grow. It does take some space but it's pretty easy, I just let it ramble amongst my fruit trees. And it lasts a long time in storage if you take a few precautions like you've shown. I look forward each year to squash stew when the weather turns. mmm.

Sweet meat are my favorite pumpkin! I didn't know they'd keep so long, I always cook them faster then that. Sadly, mine didn't do well this year, but they usually are very reliable.

This was super helpful. I'm definitely going to try at least a couple of varieties of squash next year now that I have these tips in mind. Harvesting my pumpkins this year was so tricky because we got a hard frost, and now have had weeks of unseasonably warm weather. I ended up picking them quite early and they've been ripening on my cabinets inside 😳

Any hints on what to do with not yet mature enough winter squash that was hit by frost? The squash that did not turn soft came into the house. I realize they will not keep long term but am hoping the flavor wasn't compromised so I can freeze or dehydrate them. Talk about getting sick at the wrong time!

What about the pumpkin and squash the you decorate with outside on a porch. Can you still eat those after several weeks outside?

I have a mystery winter squash growing in my garden. It started growing late in the season so I don't know if the fruit will ripe in time. Starting to look like possibly pumpkin.

The sweet meats can produce anywhere from 10 to 25 cups of cooked pumpkin, so it can take us a few weeks to get through one pumpkin. A Burgess butter cup we can easily eat in one or two meals and Delicada we usually eat 2-3 in a meal.

I've harvest 16 big squashs over 5 months. Well, I cannot keep it long , because in my culture, when you have abundance veggie/fruit, we will share it with my neighbours and family. I will ask them if they want it whole or smaller cut cause not every family like squash. The longest time keeping it is 5 months cause I hide it😅.

Winter squash are my favorite crop, but I struggle to keep them on the vine until it dies back because squirrels start sampling several weeks before. Any ideas? Our yields right now are too small for us both to get our fill.

Wouldn't it be possible to sterilize the squash with some strong alcohol like vodka or isopropyl? I'm not sure if those have a lower contact toxicity than bleach/chlorine.
