My Marina Di Chioggia squash is only just picked and already looks like it came from the Qumran caves 2000 years ago! I had one the other day and can't say how glad I am that the squash is an Heirloom whose seeds I will plant in 2023 - as it was delicious.

Have a hand saw for the kitchen for doing the first cuts on those big/hard squash. It's just so easy to open them that way.

I watch them here on YT because here in the US we do not have them at all. Unfortunately, YT takes videos down at times, so it is always a challenge to get back to what I was watching. My areas of interest are pre-victorian, so Monestery Farm, Secrets of the Castle and Tales from the Green Valley are my go tos.

We just cooked our first sweet meat of the fall and turned it into some pies for our thanksgiving! It makes the best pies!!! And the kids all argue about who gets to use the axe to open it up😉 at the end of storage mine always have germinated seeds inside so i was expecting yours to as well! Im going to try find a cooler spot to store them this year. I learned a few years ago that on top of the kitchen cupboards was a bad choice!

My great grandmother always made her pumpkin pies with this squash. And yes it was better than costco pie. I grow sweet meat every year and find success using an electric knife to cut through it. If I don't need to save the seed then I cook it in a turkey roaster in the oven whole and let it cool before removing the skin. My other most favorite winter squash are Burpee's Bush Butternut, Honeynut Butternut (for single serve size) and autumn frost. My daughter and I traditionally make a very large batch of squash soup each year and she put's it in the freezer for quick and nutritious meals. I just finished my last cup full this morning. Mmmm. Winter squash is a must in my garden. A little shout out 30 min. south in Aurora, Oregon. PS I really want to participate in seed swaps this year. Any advice on that subject?

One option for getting into these hard winter squash is to start with baking them whole, then carefully cut it open after cooking and gently remove the seeds and the strings, and use the flesh. At this point, cutting into a Sweet meat is easy enough, but I have roasted full winter squash before, and that is an easy way to get into a winter squash if cutting the raw squash is too daunting.

@permiebird9372 жыл бұрын
@@lilangel97712 Hubbard squash, which includes Sweetmeat, are harder than pumpkins or spaghetti squash, with a very thick firm flesh, that is difficult to cut. I've tried pumpkin carving tools before, and broke them on raw Hubbard squash. The squash's hardness is part of it's long storage strategy. Even when they start to rot, that can be a slow process too.

It doesn't need to be refrigerated, but do you have air conditioning or is it normally relatively cool there indoors? I'll be where it is in the 90sF (35+C) most of the year.
@permiebird9372 жыл бұрын
In Portland, 90F is rather hot, and happens intermittently over the summer, with normal summer temperatures in the 80s.Most of the year Portland is cooler. It only heats up toward the end of squash storage time.
@ParkrosePermaculture2 жыл бұрын
It can be quite warm here in the summer. We do have air-conditioning but I don’t run it very often, typically just a few times in very hot weather. I find that the Squash like to be stored a little bit below room temperature but not refrigerated and not really somewhere cold. The floor is a good spot. Our breakfast nook where I keep most of mine face is north so it is not a sunny place and cooler than the rest of the house. It also is a converted laundry porch, so the floor is poorly insulated. I also store Squash under my bed

@jacquivowles75782 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the microwaves help in keeping it - just kidding- it looks delicious. I find a very thin very sharp paring knife the safest option for cutting hard skinned pumpkin - we don't have sweetmeat here but the thin blade works well with all other varieties - it is not trying to force the sections apart just cutting through them. I too love Ruth Goodman's series - it helped so much last summer when I was preparing fruit for bottling [canning]. Have you done a video on how to ensure your ppumpkin/squash seed is true to type? I remember saving this seed before I knew how and next year's crop was not a delight.
