Curious, what do you think is easier to understand - British or American English?

British RP is not bad, I have actually enjoyed listening to a couple of tech courses led by a Brit in very clear English. But in general I prefer American. I also prefer reading -ize to -ise ;)

Seriously, these tips are GOLD. You have to master these tips by heart if you want to pass the ultimate american english conversation litmus test. The test is called USED. Many people unknowingly took the test and many people failed miserably. Some even cried. Go find the test in movies, talk shows, and interviews. USED is an abbreviation of... - - - Understanding Sam Elliott Dialogues. With subtitles turned off, this excellent actor who starred in some of the greatest movies on the planet is THE bane of english as 2nd language students around the world.

As a native English speaker, I often use these "contractions" when communicating via text with other native English speakers. As you said, though, it's definitely a no-no in more formal communications. It always depends on the situation. It's always fun to be made to realise what you're doing. ;-)
@englishtoexcel

Yep, we absolutely use these contractions in texts! I also use them in informal emails with friends and family, for example.

That could very well be true. Also has a lot to do with the exposure you have to the language - many people in South American countries have more familiarity with American English, due to the cultural exposure and close proximity of the US.

@englishtoexcel
@englishtoexcel Жыл бұрын
Los nativos hablan siempre con contracciones - inclusive en simposios, presentaciones, reuniones de negocios, etc. Las únicas veces que no se usan sería en contratos y communication muy formal y oficial - por ejemplo communication con el gobierno, documentos académicos o investigación. Deseo esto conteste tu pregunta.

Another popular contraction is omitting (of?) the subject/pronoun in fast speech. 'Fancy some ice-cream?' 'Gotta run now, see you later'. But the context makes the subject self-explanatory. It is very gladly adopted by the English learners whose mother language has rich verb conjugation (like Italian or Slavic - where each grammar person has its own flexed form) and pronouns are normally skipped.

Yep, absolutely. I'll be making more videos on this subject in the future, lots more tips/things to know and be aware of here.
