Tip #0 is exactly why I made the bass line as a freshman. I was bassoon player and met the drumline captain at a local church safe space hangout thing over the summer and he immediately told me he was going to have me on bass. He recognized my name, knowing he'd have me in the drumline, and as a drummer, he knew how bad most drummers were at reading music and was excited to have two oboes and a bassoon to fill out the bass line.

Fellow bassoon player here...I also made bassline during freshmen year because tech was nice enough to give me it...played pretty well for first year percussionist.

@@tokyo4678 Yeah, my drumline Captain ended up being one of my best friends through high school and into college. Took me under his wing with both transitions with him being two years ahead of me. Really appreciate everything he did for me. Ended up playing bass for three years and got to move up to tenors for my senior year.

@GeoFitz4

@@Taylor_Reasons Sorry, not everyone goes to a rich school that can hire a bunch of techs to help the marching band. We had two band directors and a couple volunteers to do everything. So, yeah, maybe the Captain didn't make the decisions all by himself, but he had a lot of influence on who went where.
@Taylor_Reasons
@Taylor_Reasons Жыл бұрын
@@GeoFitz4 we just have one drum tech and an assistant band director who decides these things for us. My schools nickname in our area is “the budget band”. So you don’t need a bunch of techs and money to have the right people decide who’s on the line

Good Morning!       My name is Seth Boyle (13), an aspiring drummer. I have been drumming for 7 ½ years. I went to an honor band in January, and met a really cool kid named Simon Young who introduced me to marching drumming. Problem is, I didn't have a phone, and I couldn't contact him. We talked a lot about you, even though I didn't even really watch you. And I know he watches you a lot. I have spent the last months becoming a lot better at marching drumming, but there's no one who can even play drums at our school. I want to showcase my skills, discuss marching and drumming stuff, and be able to challenge each other.       Now for the request, I would really appreciate if you could do any sort of shoutout on any video, just so I would be able to contact him. It sounds pretty desperate, but when I can't talk to anyone about playing drums, and have no one to challenge me, it makes me want to quit. If not, that's fine. I would appreciate any response, but I understand you're busy. Thanks for your time!        Still wondering why tenor practice pads are so expensive,       Seth Boyle

As an instructor, the most important characteristics I look for in students when I'm putting an ensemble together are ALL attitude-related. Students who are friendly, positive, and cooperative, who show up early, who stay late, who love to work hard without complaint and who eagerly seek feedback- those are the students who make the cut in my groups. In terms of musical focus, I'm looking for full, confident sound quality and good rhythmic interpretation with a metronome, but that can all be taught and refined! At auditions, my primary focus is to identify those students who I can teach and develop over the course of multiple years- for me, the audition process is more of an attempt to gauge a student's "teachability" and attitude than it is to gauge their musical skills!

You are one of the main reasons I got good at drums now! I made the tenor line my first year in drumline from being a trombone, then made first in the county in concert snare, did well in district, and this year at tryouts I made an almost perfect score. (which was the highest score lol) Anyway these are just some of the achievements I’ve made from watching your videos. Your videos drive me to try to be as good as you one day. Thank you for what you do

Go on social media and track down EVERY SINGLE STUDENT IN YOUR SCHOOL. Copy/paste a message to each of them, something like "Hey (person), we're looking for people to join drumline. There is no experience required and it's super fun! Our next rehearsal is (date/place). Let me know if you have any questions...(etc.)" This will be a lot of effort, but I can 100% guarantee that it will increase the chances of people joining.

I had this issue as well. Last year, we only had three in drumline. So, I made an insta page specific to drumline and posted multiple times, urging people to share it to their stories as well. Now we have nine people. Doing something along these lines should help.

Well things have changed since I was in my high school drumline. First...only drummers/percussionists played on the line. No bassoon players or flute players. haha. Seriously?? We had an award winning line and they couldn't have qualified anyway. Second we valued attitude and work ethic over technique. Like in the movie, folks had to love the sound of the cadience rather than themselves. If they were a little weak on sticking we could teach and coach them up. Can't coach attitude. It took a lot of work and effort to be a strong tight drumline. Only the best need apply. Same with our band. Our director after try outs did not hesitate to tell people "hey you aren't good enough this year. Try again next year". Motivation to work harder and get better. Now probably everyone gets in. Can't hurt anyone's feelings.

Tbh my dream is to become a band director, my band absolutely sucks ass, The drum rims are 15+ years old, rusty as shit, never cleaned, never maintained, the drumheads are shit quality, wrong type of marching drums, no cymbals (😭😭), only one of the basses have muffling strips, no aerophones? (🤨), and absolutely old drums. And yes they are older than me, LITERALLY 20+ YEARS OLD. (Yes this is irrelevant shut u-)
