I was the only bass playing it. The drill had us moving forward like quite a bit so I was crabbing. The snares and the tenors were almost 20 yards away from me because we were in this massive arc set. It was absolute hell to line up. And I couldn't really see them either because it's bass 5. Trying to listen to the one snare playing, and come in on time with them, and seeing the drum majors being on time but a little ahead f the sound getting to me made sure I always sucked at my entrance, coming in too fast and too early. Very beginning of the show, and it’s a very noticeable mess up since it’s xylophones, they cut through anything! I slow down with the measure but it sounds *awful* Here’s the show, I’m on the far left. Always struggled with that entrance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oafQpaqjrr2HrKs show starts around 3:30

As a trombonist, I sucked mainly at flats and naturals. I used to always play Ab's instead of normal A's. After a couple years of being constantly told not to play Ab's. I finally was able to play pieces correctly until this year when I had a part of a piece in Ab, so I started getting constantly told to play the note right again. Long story short, read key signatures correctly.

You mentioned about the distance and timing issue. I just realised my first ever (and so far only) show that I marched in (we never finished it because of people quiting) had a part that actually was even harder than having a tenor solo coming in right after a turn to the front. In one of the sets the percussion section actually had to split up to both sides of the field facing eachothers backs for a good 24 beats until turning 180 degrees to march back to the center. So besides the distance and therefore sound delay getting bigger and bigger with each step we not only had no sound reference, we also had no visual for those 24 beats on either the drum major or eachother to keep it together.

6:10... I think it's a better transition from a wind, string, or keyboard instrument to percussion than from percussion to wind, string, or keyboard instruments. If you start out knowing notes and key signatures, then going to a percussion instrument only requires you to learn drumming techniques like rolls and such. It comes with the added benefit that you know right off the bat how to play a song if you get put on a keyboard instrument like marimba or xylophone

I couldn’t read music till my junior year, so basically two years of marching band and indoor learning music by ear and only using the sheets for the sticking lol. Another one is I’m naturally left handed but I forced myself to learn how to play righty when I started learning drum set. I really only played rock and metal till high school so when I did flams I did them however it was comfortable for me (all left handed with the grace note essentially at the same height at the accent). Flash forward to high school I made the snare line and I went a whole year without ever realizing there was a difference between left handed and right handed flams. They fixed the grace note height issue but somehow never noticed my flams were lefty. Enter sophomore year and we got some new staff who marched and taught the Cadets and one of them noticed I played all my flams lefty. He was like bro right handed flams have the right hand higher. But again I didn’t realize righty flams have the left hand as the grace note so basically my left handed flams were correct but right handed flams ended up being malfs. Needless to say the entire drum staff was dumbfounded 😂

i remember doing the african bell carol between me (congas) and another percussionist (bongos) also had a choir concert that same night and I was sick (strep) and it hurt to talk for like 2 weeks let alone sing, it was a rough concert

My most vivid memory at sucking at a drumming thing was the first time I tried to play quarter notes on the hi hat while playing the bass drum on the & of 2. The idea that my foot could do something in between notes my right hand was playing was something my brain was not ready to process. Also, it took me until my sophomore year of college to get my left hand to do and look like my right hand when I played.

I just started high school and got snare. It’s awesome but I know that Some things we play I’m not very good at some parts. Mostly flams and paradiddles. But I’m gonna keep working on being better and practicing every day.

Good Morning, (among other things i've sucked at) - a few years ago our band was playing Shostakovich's 5th symphony for our annual concert. I was playing cymbals and had 128 bars rest from the start till I had my first note. I came in 1 bar early. I earned the nickname Tim-Cym from our director

I play a lot of instruments, but for the band I'm a saxophone. I've been wanting to learn percussion for a while now, especially drumset/snare/tenor, and recently picked it up so I can join marching band as a percussionest next year. This video made me realize that I have a long way to go, especially since I'm mostly teaching myself... this is going to be rough.

I play saxophone for band too and I always wanted to play percussion but it seemed so hard
@pikameer83253 жыл бұрын
@@VIVISALT It's a lot of rhythm which I've never been good at reading off of sheet music haha. Honestly just buy a cheap pair of drumsticks and a practice pad and start learning. There's tons of good KZbin videos and sheet music out there. I started by watching beginner drum tutorials, learning exercises, and improving my rhythm game (check patterns help a *ton*) and I'm going to start learning the 40 rudiments next.

Hah I’m a trombone who learned baritone to march, but I love drumline and am learning percussion stuff from all of them because it’s fun. It’s definitely rough. I never underestimated the percussionists and all the work they do, but ahah I cannot do it. It’s… interesting. But imma keep working at it until I get good.

@@adrienne9962 yeah exactly man!! It’s rough haha, and I don’t even know how to start learning tenor at home. Right now just going through yt videos for snare and whatnot. If you have any tips that would be greatly appreciated lol.
@adrienne99623 жыл бұрын
@@pikameer8325 yeh, tenors are the thing I realllllly want to learn but I have no idea how to start so I’m basically doing the same thing you are. I’m starting off with the snare stuff and finding random things videos. What I really need to do first is learn how to read drum notation, because it’s hella different than a wind instrument lmaooo

8:26 As a junior percussionist who played Armenian Dances this year, it physically hurt me to hear other people try to play and constantly mess up.

from uk... thanks for the video... its mad the USA and UK have absolutely the the same ways of teaching drums... nobody should be put off by the hours and hours of practice... my one and only teacher was ex-military... the sheet music was finite, but at the same time he allowed the mistakes... improvisation is key to developing you're own style and marching bands (so to speak) take it out of you... yet it builds the first building blocks to develop your own style... so many people ive taught just want to bash away... it doesn't work like that thanks again, if you could do all that with footwork you'd be an absolute god!😄all the best

I played African bell carol in 7th grade and I was put on vibes, I didn’t know the part until the day before the concert when I asked my friend how to play it and I memorized it.

I didn't know how to really count correctly until like my late junior year of High School. And I started playing drums in school in 6th grade. And I never stopped until I graduated high school.

Biggest thing I had to learn out of the 20 years of playing drums, is that drumming is a constant learning process. I still challenge myself to this day on things that are outside of my comfort zone.

It is for precisely the reasons you stated that I require my middle school percussionists to learn mallets first. And, you have to be bad at something before you get good at it. Persistence is the key! As for myself, my first year in SCV ('84) playing tenors, I came in really late (June) and spent the entire season playing catch up. I sucked for a while. Better in '85.

Eric Whitacre piece, I think Cloudburst Tuba solo. I'd marginally nailed the part a bunch of times on a horn. A year later, we're on tour and I'd had to sell that good tuba to pay rent. I had an ebay horn, which just WOULD not play the stinkin A at the top of the staff in tune to save my life. Not even remotely close, didn't matter how much I worked at it. I gave in and passed the part to the "more experienced" dude, who had been given a free pass for the trip to help fill in our sound. Still a bit bitter about it, but I just couldn't do the part with the hardware I had. The horn sitting in my lap right now is a different beast, and the part sings freely. Most of the time' it's about you and how much time you take things to the woodshed. Somethings are the gear. Treat your gear well; and it'll have your back.

I sucked at everything and ALWAYS had to practice, practice, practice. I ended up playing the drums for the high school jazz band while still in junior high lol. Marching quads I didn't suck at, but I HATED marching season. I liked concert. I did all the auxiliary parts lol.

I remember learning mallets with in my freshman year, my percussion instructor and we were going through the notes. I will not forget the time he was going through the notes. He asked me what each and every note was and I was getting the hang of it. A B C D E F G H! He stared at me and I realized my mistake. We had a good laugh and now I have an idea on four mallet as a senior.

I started marching band in the 8th grade as a tenor in the stands but mallets in the show. The. My 9th grade year same thing but our director wanted me to learn to march with lighter weight so tenor in the stands but snare marching. Then tenors for everything the rest of the years

We had too many percussions in our middle school band so I always got stuck on the mallets. So my drumming skills actually ended up being way way worse than my mallets skills lmao. I really sucked at playing those repetitive ryhthms on the "and" of the beat, of every single beat. So easy to get out of tempo on those.
