Moodboards (can help with compulsive spending) 3. Accountability buddies (friends work best) 4. Therapy (helps to reframe how you think about yourself) 5. Constant reminders (calendars, alarms, …)

I'm a bigger night owl than Chelsea described (going to bed between 1-2am and waking up between 9-10am would be a dream for me lol), and I agree that does make things a bit less productive in life. I will say tho at least three are improvements in technologies that help people like us out in mitigating that. Little things like online banking (I can't remember the last time I've stepped into a bank), online shopping, grocery delivery, online tax prep, working from home, etc. I still desire to make myself into more of a morning person tho, every day is a new battle!

I feel you on this. I actually prefer to sleep in the daylight. I used to feel ashamed of this but then I learned some of us descend from night watchmen. We would have been the people who took watch over the village at night. It’s hard because the world doesn’t operate for our natural body rhythms but I don’t feel bad about it anymore. Most of my family are night owls and we aren’t lazy. We have jobs and we work hard, we just prefer to do it later in the day, even late at night.

Realizing that I relate to Chelsea's old self to a horrifying degree was the wake up call I needed. I’m an introvert with ADHD, but I didn’t know I had ADHD until a little over a year ago. I just thought I was lazy, stupid, unmotivated, and just not capable of achieving the things I wanted. Turns out there’s a reason for that, and I can fix it. While I do have neurological reasons that make life a little harder, I have learned to find the right supports (meds and therapy and a LOT of self acceptance) that help my mind catch up with reality. I love the way you phrased that - our mental perception needs to catch up with reality. I’m becoming a morning person, I’m more realistic with what I can do with my time, and I’m less afraid of setting goals. I do think I am still type B, in the sense that I’m not motivated by external rewards, but rather I am motivated by my own expectations of myself. Instead of wanting to be the best among everyone else, I just want to be the best I imagine myself to be. I think just having that awareness has made a major impact on my quality of life.

Congrats! I have my first appointment with an ADHD specialist in a couple weeks, but I might also have autism so idk. I was wondering, if you feel comfortable sharing, what did you realistically learn in therapy for ADHD? I have some bias against therapy from going undiagnosed for so long and having multiple experiences with practitioners that gave unhelpful advice.
@allisonbuettner39342 жыл бұрын
@@amentrison2794 I had been going for several years as needed, but in therapy leading up to and after my diagnosis, I learned not to judge my thoughts and feelings. I’m a very logical person but I also feel things strongly, and often I’m too hard on myself. I’m working on being neutral about things instead of thinking “wow, you’re stupid, why didn’t you already know this?” or “you’re so lazy, why can’t you just fold your laundry?” now I say to myself, “here’s a chance to learn something” or “it’s just laundry, I will get around to it.” I’m also learning how to work with my strengths and not keep trying to force a square peg into a round hole. If something just is not working for me, like a morning routine, I can just change it. I don’t have to mask my symptoms and try to be like someone else when my brain is different. I also lean in to when my brain wants to hyper-focus, it can be a strength when applied to something I am interested in!

I’ve noticed that my “i suck at math” attitude stems from math class ptsd 💀 like it wasn’t the easiest subject for me and teachers didn’t really spend lots of time individually w students to help them progress so i felt like i fell behind and was just somehow moving along w the rest of my class. Come university and I have to take calculus and statistics for my major. I held off calculus till my senior year. Stats was incredibly fun and I was somehow? Great at it. I memorized the formulas and everything because I attributed everything to the stuff I was learning for my major. It wasn’t “math” class. When it was time for calc, I fucking sucked horrible on the first time. Then i buckled down and I was actually doing well!! It was so weird because growing up i always thought “u just suck at math” when it’s like “no u just need someone to explain it in a more clear and relatable way for you”

Love this! I became a runner by slowly challenging the notion that I wasn't a runner by slowly building up the amount I ran. Did I feel like a runner when I only ran for 20 seconds at a time? Not really, but by intentionally working towards that goal I was able to turn myself into a runner. It's so tempting to just stick with what feels natural or easy, but that's not how we grow.
@meaganalexander2088 Жыл бұрын
Same!! I no longer say that I could never be a runner, because by definition, a runner is someone who runs! 😂 Am I the best? No. Am I really fast? Uhhh no. But am I making steady progress? Absolutely :) when we look at energy attributed towards our goals as an investment for the future instead of food for motivation, we trick our brains into believing we can already do the thing. Why would I need to “find” the motivation if I already know inside that I am more than capable of accomplishing it with time? We’ve got this. 🙌🏼

Super interesting. And a variation is that many of those that 'know' you don't want to recognise that you have changed. We live many many years (if we are lucky) with many inputs and investments in our time. To think that we are stuck somewhere back in our childhood, young adult or even later personality is ludicrous. Parents in particular struggle with the fact that their children have changed. Wanting them to be what they are used to, and sometimes begrudging, or at the least not understanding, what they have become. And life keeps morphing, especially if there is a level of self awareness. We quite simply do not stand still. Which can give hope to those who do not like where they are now.

Looking back, I used to be in complete denial that caffeine in the evening contributed to my late-night habits. Furthermore, eating late and nighttime snacks can also push back your circadian rhythm. Significantly, there was an emotional aspect of enjoying the solitude and productivity I could achieve late at night. Lastly, I think that brain-space of pushing past sleepiness can be a drug (just like pushing past hunger is for some people). I had a minor identity crisis when I realized i was not karmically a night owl who was incapable of changing...but i eventually got over it.

The tips on reminders is game changing. I totally have that exact issue with reminders

Thanks for the tips Chelsea because procrastination is my middle name and it got so bad, when I was going to what you all would consider community college - I dropped out because I always waited till last minute to do each project or homework. At my age, I haven't changed - waiting till late minute and having to scramble to figure out stuff. And yes I use my reminder app and calendar at least but the other tips would definitely help. Best wishes

Check out WaitButWhy blog and his series on procrastination. The author is a full blown procrastinator and his insights really helped me as well.

Chelsea, would love to see some informational videos linked about using spreadsheets in detail. Or like a live class or something!

Ahh haha, I don't even own a home but before I rented the room I'm in, I asked for the dimensions so I could also plan the interior as you did. I also think of myself, in a shame-y way, and from others telling me in the past, that I'm "type B" but I don't enjoy thinking of myself like this. I have been complaining about things being boring at work and me lacking money, wanting a freelance gig for over a year and haven't redone my graphic design portfolio yet. This helps me feel more seen and push forward with it. I'm the worst procrastinator, but I definitely can be organized, it's the consistency I'm trying to grow towards.

Oh my gosh adding birthdays to my Google calendar has been huge. I even started adding reminders for when friends have moves or big life appointments they're nervous about etc so I can send them an I'm thinking of you

Recently began using reminders to do daily check ins with myself during the day to try to get in tune w/my feelings and hunger cues. I found that i mindlessly eat at certain times of the day and have had such a hard time stoping! After just a couple of weeks of doing this and asking myself some very specific questions I already feel more aware of my hunger (or lack thereof), and have lost 3lbs.

Love that notebook! Chelsea, we love to see it! 🤣 As a legally blind gal, recently married, I'm trying to figure out how to be more handy around the house - with the attitude of, what can I do? A lot more than my limiting beliefs lead me to think! Thank you for this video and sharing! I fractured my foot the other day(a bad fall) and I was like, I hate sitting stiiiiill but then I realized I could catch up on TFD!!!! Helps me realize that the boot is temporary, it could be worse, and this is literally an excuse to consume lots of media.

@Thefinancialdiet - Be careful about TJ Max, they often have to license deals with brands such as for example Elie Tahari, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger in where they manufacture the clothing and have the license to put the brand's label on it, or the brand makes specialized clothes (at lower quality and value) to sell at these off price retailers. All while putting the department store inflated MSRP's on the tags, to make customers think they are getting a steal.
@kaiwryn2 жыл бұрын
People seriously underestimate what percentage of the stuff at TJ Maxx (and other discount retailers) was made specifically to be sold there, and manufactured to a quality standard accordingly. Selling last season's clothes to TJ Maxx so that the brand can cut their losses on clothes they've already tried putting in the sale section is not the same as inking a deal the provide significant quantities with the intention of turning a (presumably healthy?) profit.

If I am being honest, the only thing that worked for me when it comes down to changing my behavior towards goals, finances and life perspective was to be so deep into depression that the only way out was to get rid of it.
@xxmorningxstarxx2 жыл бұрын
I was also a chronic procrastinator and avoided a lot of stuff. I was really mean to myself over it and hated myself for being so lazy. Turns out my biggest issue was I was depressed and anxious. Once I started to treat my mental illnesses, I was able to get better at handling tasks as they came up. I'm not perfect but that was a huge turning point for me. Personally I find using a planner and bullet journal help keep me organized (I like to keep my personal and work tasks in separate places).

I had a similar experience in changing my personality. At work we all got extensive personality assessments, after which they shared the with me all the documents outlining the qualities, strengths, weaknesses, etc of my personality type. But they ALSO shared about all the other personality types. After reading through the other types, I realized how superior the "living experience" was for one or two of the other types. So, I decided to start practicing those qualities. After a short while, those positive traits became incorporated into my personality. :) As you say, it can happen. Good for you too! (Love your videos, thanks!)

I will say, I'm not American, and a lot of the self help content on KZbin tends to really push the toxic, live to work, work is life, productivity is self worth, type of American hustle culture. Neither do I want nor understand that. So it's refreshing that Chelsea, though coming from the same environment and context, manages to not fall into that narrative, at least a lot of the time.

1. Therapy saved my life. 2. I wasn’t ready for the Spongebob reference but it made me SO HAPPY. 3. If one form of therapy doesn’t work, don’t quit! There’s so many kinds and you should be able to find one that works for you.

I really enjoyed the “authentic self doesn’t always come easy” bit. I think we forget that there is less resistance to sitting on your couch than going for a walk, therefore easier but that doesn’t mean that the harder task won’t make us more connected to ourselves… great video as always

I literally cannot tell you how much I needed to hear this today. I love this!!! I see myself as disorganized, and I feel like I want to change it but I think "oh but I just can't" I call myself "non perfectionistic" but it bothers me that I don't try more. I trap myself.

Key takeaways from the Video Summarized : 1. Spreadsheets is the Queen Card you can use to prioritise and breakdown tasks/activities 2. Moodboard is your Secret Best Friend ; use it to qualify any goal so as to plan out and visualise your long term / big budget goals and to help you achieve delayed gratification if it fullifils the criteria. 3. Goal oriented Therapy , Goal Defined Therapy , Intentional Therapy . 4. For a better life and outcomes You Just Gotta do it , So start somewhere !! Doesn't matter how small or big steps you take ; if you set your mind to it you can achieve modifications in your personality (It is not a stagnant phenomenon ; you can alter it and decide to make your own custom definition but only if you decide you want to change .)

I hate when people say "I got this designer from TJMaxx for such a deal!" No you didn't. Those designers have separate lines for TJMaxx and Marshall's that are lesser quality and more cheaply made. You got duped. If you like the sweater, that's great and I'm happy for you. But you've fallen for the marketing if you think you got a $350 sweater for less than $100.
@LaurenAnne62 жыл бұрын
First, love the sweater. I would also bring excited about that find. Second, I liked your point about therapy. To add to it, I think that you can discover your goals after going to therapy for a while. It's okay to feel lost and not really know why you're there but know that you need it. My individual and group therapists have helped me so much over the years decide what I needed to work on when I become ready. I am SO much better because of them and the fact that I was ready to do the work, because it is hard work. I've got a lot of trauma to sift through and trauma that I have sifted through over the last 8 years. I've also become more type A almost to my detriment. A lot of those actions are fuelled by fear that I will ruin everything again because I am a piece of shit. Another thing to work out in therapy that I don't know will ever fully go away but the voice has gotten quieter.
