This is great advice, Another thing I have learned on this journey (and I'm new to this), is that alot of 80's clothes drew inspiration from the 40's.(I'm an 80's child and kicking myself now for getting rid of all that wonderful stuff as it went out of style). I can find 80's suits and dresses that totally pass for 40's, and the 80's are easier to find and more affordable and generally in better shape. SO that would be another tip I would offer, look at other decades and see how you can alter them or accessorize them in a way that reflects an older style you prefer. It's easier on your wallet and actually comes out looking very original.

I am very shy when it comes to vintage dressing, but the other day I went to the mall and I styled my hair a page boy style and a cute outfit and even though I was so frightened !!! lol I got a ton of complements :D even at my favorite store, sephora the workers were in awe it felt so good thanks!! your advice helped me a ton!

I dressed like in a vintage fashion for the first time yesterday and everybody was staring at me. I had the victory rolls, curled hair, rockabilly/pin-up style. Honestly I felt a little out of place and too dressed up (because I usually wear a tshirt, jeans and sneakers). I hope that these feelings will change when I start dressing like this more often. Side note: I work at a thrift store and found a whole bunch of things for my new vintage/retro style.

I remembered my first time dressing up in 60's mod stuff :) At first I was a bit uncomfortable wearing dresses because I'm use to wearing jeans all the time, but after I wore dresses for some time, dozens of people started to LOVE how I look ^_^ Many say that I look perfect for being in the 60's, so I kept wearing vintage stuff. These tips are fab, this will really help boost my confidence up.

Great video and wonderful tips!!! I've been dressing vintage for years and would add these tips: 1) Shoes - good quality vintage looking shoes like Cobb Hill, Miss Mooz, Clarks, will be a major staple for a vintage wardrobe, and for summer a pair of good walking sandals. These brands make mary janes, oxfords, ballet flats and sandals in styles that were worn in the 1930s-50s and will last for years. If you wear makeup, keep it simple and classic - neutral eyes, black liner, red lips. If you're not a make up person, than just a tinted lip balm can create that vintage vibe. The most important one I can think of to add is undergarments - nothing ruins an outfit like poorly fitting undergarments. Make sure your bras fit well and keep you feeling secure and comfortable. It does wonders for posture, and will give you the silhouette the shape you want. Remember, woman back then wore girdles and full support bras, so spanx and a good bra will smooth your shape under knits and clingy fabrics. Ladies were trained to never slouch and always carry themselves gracefully, which will become second nature as your confidence grows in your new look. One more thing - research! Like a pair vintage shoes? surf the web and comparison shop! There is a ton of amazing, affordable finds out there! It's much more accessible than you may realize. Have fun! XOXOXO

my advice for vintage shopping is that youll want to wear red lipstick and look the part, so if you do be very very careful not to get it on garments when you try on. this even happens to me with my own pieces on days that i wait too long to take off my lipstick

Also, I like the idea that we are a supportive community of free inner expression. How positive is that? I loved this look for so long, but was too scared to embrace it. My hair stylist, was like what are you waiting for...just do it. Jump on in, who cares what other people think if it makes you happy. I thought I would never pull it off. I started small and built my wardrobe just like Jen said. So much of my stuff comes for regular stores but strategically purchased and worn. Stay beautiful!

Great advice! Thank you!! :) Another tip I can give the sewing ladies is, buy a vintage clothing pattern and get some vintage look-alike fabric to make your own vintage wardrobe. If you're going to buy a vintage repro pattern, just don't purchase any by the Butterick company. They have trouble with fit. Simplicity, Burda, and Vogue make the best repros.

Hi Jen! Your vlogs are fab! I have just discovered you btw, and spent all weekend catching up with your posts. Thanks for showing VLV - I feel as if I was there! This post is great! I used to dress very vintage - hair, clothes etc. Then I went through a low point - got badly bullied at work :(. Ate to compensate and gained weight. Lost all my confidence. Just coming out of the woods now. Recently three colleagues asked me why I no longer dressed vintage. They then told me how great I had looked. So next day did my hair in victory rolls. I felt like the elephant in the room that everyone was ignoring!!! Until one of the original thee saw me and said "Yay!!! Pretty hair!" Has done wonders for my confidence. Decided to start small with hair - so I checked out you Bette Davis look, and did that today - and no side eyes😃. Will build up to victory rolls slowly. Sorry about long comment! The advice you impart here is brilliant - thank you

I started by wearing bright lipstick in red or hot pink. I already wore lots of somewhat vintage-looking clothes without even realizing it (cardigans, sweetheart necklines, pencil skirts) and as soon as I started wearing bright lipstick I noticed how vintage-y I looked. You are right about people asking what you are "dressed up as", I get asked a lot if I am "dressed up as Marilyn Monroe" when I go out with my hair done. I take it as a compliment that I'm just that good at putting myself together :)

This is wonderful! I love the tip about trying on something different. So many of my vintage dresses looked a little schlubby on the hanger, but hugged my curves beautifully when I tried them on. My personal tips: Find a good tailor in your neighborhood who can replace a busted zipper, nip in a waist, or enlarge arm holes, etc. Alterations are worth the $$! Also, check out thrift stores & church rummage sales while on vacation in other cities. It's a great way to score vintage on the cheap!

I loved it when you said "then you can start dressing the way you feel" I felt like you had picked me out of a crowd and was speaking to me personally! Even when I was younger, say 9 or 10 I always felt a little different from other girls and as I got older that became more and more apparent. I've always had an old soul I've always gravitated towards cardigans and vintage styles. But I've never had the courage to or the know-How to dress the way I've always felt inside as a teen I got made fun of a lot because while the other Hispanic girls were drawing on there eyebrows and listening to hip hop I was rocking a red lip, cat eyes and the horrorpops they would say I was white washed. Now as am adult I'm still stuck in very domestic clothes and make up out of fear of being judged because I'm a mommy if two gorgeous kids. Any how now that I've bored u to death with my rambling, I'm super excited that I found your channel and I have already subscribed :-).

I know exactly how you feel! I always tried to wear the trends and it always came out wrong, but when I started not caring and dressing the way I felt everything changed for me. :D Sadly being different as a teenager is not an easy path and that struggle can have lasting effects (large and small). I know so many fabulous Mommy's who dress in the style they like, don't let others judgement stop you from dressing the way you like! Start small...wing out those eyes or slip into a A-line skirt and cardi! Before you know it you'll be feeling more yourself. My friend Ashley (over at Lisa Freemont Street) is a fabulous and glamorous Mommy of quite a few kids and I'm sure she'd agree that you can rock it! ~hugs~

My tip is to start in the thriftstores! they're cheap, some thriftstores have even started with a vintage section for the more priced items, but you can find real treasures if you dig around. And for fun, check inwith your family, your parents and grandparents might be sitting on unknown treasures (I know for a fact my grandmother's got some coats left from the 40-50's in her closet that I'm planning to take over :))

Thumbs up for a cardigan addiction!!! The majority of my vintage clothes I get from the thrift store!!! :D I get crazy cute dresses all the time for under $5 and people can't believe it! There are a lot of basic, classic pieces that just look the same throughout the years and even if you don't dress vintage, they're just great to have. I am 13 and I really want to dress more vintage-y(?) But it is really difficult because I can't really buy things online and stuff. Now I must journey onwards to watch more of your videos :) ♥

If you have any thrift stores in the area that is a great place to look and Target as well has some pieces that have a vintage feel to them! :D I love that already you know what style you like!

I manage a local thrift store for our local crisis center one of the perks of my jobs (that is totally volunteer) is I get take home any thing that isn't good enough too go out on the sales floor. Stain, holes missing buttons things like that so my vintage wardrobe is starting out with the luck of the draw. Your hints are really helping me pull things together. Thanks.

Omg I’m so glad I just found your video! You are so easy to listen to and take advice from! I loved this video .. I’m trying to do a rockabilly style and idk where to start but I love them tip for small stuff at old navy I’ve seen stuff there that sort of mimics the pin up style if you do it right and add in a cute pin up hair style, you can be there! Loved this video ❤️
