The Ragley BIG Al. Definitely a ass-kicker on any enduro trail. And I outclimb weenie on a FS rig. Narrowed the tired to 29X2.35(easier to remove on those clampy 30mm rims. Installed a Zeron fork(the Rockshox, got corroded through a single Winter), Put-on a dropper post, Xpedo platform pedals, and a Victagen headlight for insane night singletrack. Recently changed-out the Deore for SRAM NX/GX. Now using a BlueFlow BF37 rim, on the front. A bad-looking, weight-weenie ass kicker.

@shwndh4 жыл бұрын
Omar Carrillos For the price, the Marlin is not a bad 1st mountain bike. It can be updated but it’s only held back a bit by its non-tapered headtube. But if you bump up the budget to one of these bikes on this list, you get a lighter bike with a much better parts spec you don’t necessarily have to upgrade and enjoy on the trails as is.

I think the Marlin is a good bargain when bought used. I bought my girlfriend the one in this video for $200 and it's perfect for her occasional riding. How does the Specialized Fuse Comp ans the Trek Roscoe 7 compare to the Vitus Sentier? I'm looking for my first mountain bike. I'm worried that I wont be able to get the Vitus worked on at the 2 local shops near me since they only carry Trek and Specialized.
@Daniel_Cooley4 жыл бұрын
Or is it worth it to get the Virus and just try to learn as I break the bike? Lol
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel! Both those bikes are nice! I really want to like the Roscoe, but my biggest issue with it is the rear wheel hub spacing/dropout. It isn't the boost 148 spacing with a thru axle like almost all other bikes in this price range offer. That decreases stiffness in the rear and makes wheel upgrades more difficult in the future. The Fuse comp offers a lot, but in my findings it's only offered in a 29" wheel. It's also $1,675, so a bit more costly. Take a look at the Vitus Sentier VR or VRS model. Offered in both 27.5 or 29, and offers similar components to both the Roscoe and Fuse. The VRS is $1,600, but does offer an impressive spec list. The Nukeproof and Ragley both offer a higher spec model of the Scout and Marley, so if you are willing to spend a little more than the $1,200 budget of this list, then those are some fantastic values as well. Also, any bike shop will work on any bike. If they guilt you for buying a different brand than what they sell, then you would want to find a different bike shop. I have a YT bike which is sold direct to consumer, and my local shop that sells Specialized happily works on it and does a great job. Long story short, I would just avoid the Roscoe due to the rear hub spacing, but the Fuse or any of these other bikes would be an awesome bike to get started on! Best of luck to you, and let me know what you end up getting!

I'm looking at two possibilities the Vitus Sentier or the nucleus and the nuke proof scout 275. I loved the upgrade video on the nucleus and I was wondering if the frame the same throughout the Vitus range? My Scott is a 2012 bike and it's still a great bike it's just that technology has come a long way since then and I'm looking for more spec for my money. Could I do as you have done and get the nucleus and upgrade or just go for the Sentier or the scout? I don't mind adding better components over time I just need to know if the frame (the foundation) is solid! I am really impressed by Ragleys price to performance ratio, especially compared to the competition - and they have one of the coolest looking emblems. Especially the Nukeproof Scout Comp, because for 200 bucks more (so, 1,4k) you can already get the Mmmbop form Ragley (64 degrees + 150mm travel). But I would wait for bikes to come out with the new Shimano Deore M6100 groupset, since a lot of the current bikes come with the crappy SRAM SX Eagle set, which has some quality issues. The Deore set is also compatible with the higher tiered one by sets, so you can easily upgrade individual parts if you want or something eventually breaks or is worn out. If I were rich and had the tools and knowledge I'd probably build a bike with the Mmmbop frame, which even is in black.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
A friend of mine wants the Mmmbop, and I can see why. Looks like a gnarly beast! I'm excited for the Deore 12 speed. I prefer Shimano drivetrains as they feel a little more crisp to me. I haven't had the chance to use the SX Eagle yet, but my hardtail has the NX Eagle. It does the job ok, so I don't have a ton of faith in the SX. I hope you can get your Ragley someday!

Love the video! I'm newly addicted to trail riding and am debating upgrading my 20 year old bike, any thoughts on the Co Op bikes from REI? They seem to be the only ones in stock at the moment. Also, would a modern hard tail serve me better than a 20 year old full suspension (Gary Fisher Joshua F3)? Looking forward to more content :)
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't know much about the Co-Op bikes. I see them on my local trails a decent amount. . The DRT 2.1 is the closest competitor to this list at $1,300. It does offer a 12 speed cassette and dropper post which are all nice features. As far as comparing to your Gary Fisher, I think a modern hardtail might be better. It will have more confidence inspiring geometry along with all the modern bike standards, and probably weigh less. Not to say the Gary Fisher wouldn't work just fine, but I think if you're learning the basics, you'd have more fun on something modern.

Great vid! Question: what is the boost spacing and thru axle and why are these features important? Just MTB noob trying to learn the lingo.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you! I show the thru axle on my bike at 00:25, and then an open dropout at 11:35 for a visual representation. The "boost" spacing refers to the width of the hub and is essentially the standard (for now) in mountain bikes. It gives you the most options for wheel upgrades/replacements, helps align the wheels in the frame, and axles offer more rigidity. Axles are also way easier to remove and put back on as it can only go in one way. No more guessing if you put your wheel in straight. Most mountain bikes these days have an axle, so it will become harder and harder to find wheel options in the future that accommodate older spacing standards.

What do you think about Trek’s Roscoe 7 or X Caliber 8 both come in about $1200? I think those are a better comparison than the Marlins..
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
I like the Roscoe 7! It's $1,250 so didn't make the budget for this particular video. It does however offer a dropper post with it. My only issue with the Roscoe is the rear wheel dropout isn't a boost thru axle. X-Caliber 8 is a decent option as well. I was trying to focus on the trail bike segment for this video, and the X-Caliber falls into XC territory. Same issues as the Roscoe however....no thru axles front or rear on this bike.

Glad you mentioned the Vitus Sentier. I believe it is undervalued just because it’s a british brand. You should also check out Whyte bikes. Cheers

Out of these hardtails, which do you think would be best for wheelies? Or any other hardtails you’ve looked into?
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
The best way to determine that would probably be the chainstay length. The shorter the chainstays are, the easier it would be to manual. Of the bikes featured in this list, the Ragley Marley and Vitus Sentier both have the shortest chainstays at 425mm.
@tommyr953 жыл бұрын
Hey Kyle, did you happen to find out if the Ragleys were thru-axle or if they had dropouts? I've not had any luck finding out, but certainly hoping for thru-axles, of course. Thanks!!

Great video! Where would the Fezzari Wasatch Peak 27.5+/29 fall on this list as far as specs go?
@keatonroberson15944 жыл бұрын
The steeper ht angle would be the only factor keeping it from being on this list, at 68 degrees.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
The components look pretty good! It has a 12 speed eagle which is a nice bonus, tubeless wheels, hydraulic brakes, and thru axles. I don't know a ton about that fork, but otherwise a very solid bike!

for some reason, I am really drawn to the Vitus line of mountain bikes. Their 500 GBP bike made to best mountain bike under that price 4 years in a row, from what I've seen online. Is there anything in particular that the other bikes on this list would be better than the Vitus Sentier? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
All the bikes on this list are pretty similar. They vary only slightly in geometry, but everything else is similar. I think the Sentier VR (next one up from bike in this video) is a really solid deal at $1,249. Between these bikes, it basically would come down to geometry and color preference.

I love my Vitus sentier vrs 2019, but i´m interrested in buying a second, more agressive bike this year: Ragley Mmmbop, can you say something about it. And is it maybe to slack with 63.75 Headtube Angle?
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
The Mmmbop is pretty awesome looking! I've never ridden a bike with that slack of a head angle. I'm guessing it would hinder you slightly on the climbs, but looks like this bike was built more for fun than efficiency. If jumping and downhill is your main goal, then the Mmmbop would make a really cool bike.

I'm a noob and first time buyer. What are your thoughts on Diamond back like Mason 1/2 and Sync'r? Thanks.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
I like Diamondback bikes! I had one and it was great. The Sync'r and Mason 2 were over the budget for this video, but I would happily recommend either of those bikes. The Mason 1 isn't as good as value in my opinion. Still a good bike, but it has mechanical disc brakes and no thru axles. If you could get the Sync'r or Mason 2 on sale sometime, they would both be a great bike!

Should I get a bossnut v2 or any of these hard tails?
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what kind of riding you want to do. The Bossnut is a pretty awesome bike for that price. If you see yourself progressing into bigger drops and rockier/rougher terrain, then you might prefer that rear suspension. I personally love riding hardtails, but I also live in Texas which isn't super gnarly.

I have a vitus sentier vr, which was 1200 or so, and i absolutely love it. Adds a 12 speed sram sx, and dropper seatpost to everything you mentioned in the video. Wholeheartedly recommend as a hardtail that offers a great upgrade path. There’s also the vitus mythique for around the same money which gets you full suspension. That I haven’t had any person experience with though. Great video
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I love the Sentier VR. I considered upping the budget on this video just to include that one, but "bikes under $1,250" didn't sound as catchy. I really want to ride both the Sentier and Mythique. I've done enough research on both that I think it would be an awesome bike.

I started on that Marlin 5, I think it was a good starter since I had NEVER stuck with riding a bike in the past haha. Listen to Kyle if you think theres even a 30% chance you'll want to stick with it. Worst case: You end up with a bike you wont ride but will have better resale chances! Its crazy to see so many people interested in riding. We'll see if they start to fall off with the heat getting so bad here now.
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
I started on a Trek 3700 which was probably even worse than the Marlin lol. I paid around $200 for the Marlin I have for Jenna to learn to ride, and for that it's perfect. For any serious mountain biking, I'd steer away from that thing.

Hello! The Soul 20 has good geometry, but a couple things it lacks in comparison to these bikes is it uses a coil sprung fork, and has an open dropout for the back wheel. What is the performance difference between 27.5 and 29 wheels.
@jamescollingridge42424 жыл бұрын
29er wheels, are very good for DH riding as they roll over bumps and maintain speed better, 27.5 have quicker acceleration, and easier to move around. I THINK don’t trust me haha someone correct me if I’m wrong!
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
James pretty much nailed it! If speed and rolling over stuff is more important to you, then 29er would be best. If you prefer to be nimble, and have a more "playful" feeling bike, then 27.5 might be better. You can still jump and be playful on a 29, or go fast on a 27.5, but that just depends on skill level.

How do you feel about the xcaliber 8 from trek? Would love to hear your thoughts
@CobraKyle4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kobe. The Xcaliber is more of a cross country race bike, and in a slightly different category than these bikes. A couple things I don't love about the Xcaliber 8 are the fact that it doesn't have a boost thru axle in the rear, and uses the SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain. At almost $1,300 I would like to see a thru axle in the rear of this bike. If you are more interested in cross country bikes, I will recommend the BMC Twostroke AL Two model. It is $1,200, and is a pretty impressive bike. I might work on a budget cross country mountain bike list in the next couple months, so I may have more recommendations in the future, but I think there are better bikes for the money than the Xcaliber.

If you're a beginner, probably a hardtail. Much better for learning skills on as you don't rely on the rear suspension. If you get a good one, it won't hold you back until you're a very good rider who's passionate enough about the sport to not care about selling the car for a nice full sus. Edit: it'll take a few years or more before you start to want a full sus
