Vietnam 🇻🇳 Me and my Thai girlfriend spent 2 weeks in DaNang last month. We thoroughly enjoyed our time traveling around the Danang area. We found the Vietnamese people very friendly and welcoming. Not once did we feel unsafe, we didn't get scammed and no one tried to steal my cell phone. The only issue was that not a lot of people spoke English and we had to use Google translate. I can't wait for my next trip to Vietnam.

With respect to the Vietnam story I do not dare say that the person who commented did not experience what he said but from my 30+ years of experience living here no taxi driver ever asked me to show cash before the trip. The number of issues I have had with taxis has been almost zero. While short term visitors would not know is that there are two main taxi companies being Mai Linh and Vinasun who control about 80% of the taxi market and they both can be trusted with a high degree of confidence. If one has a grab app then the fare is pre-determined and I have never had any issue with them. As for snatching… yes that happens but very manageable with simple safeguards. I have endured more theft in the US than here by a significant factor. Having been to Thailand many times I can say that life in the two countries is “same same but different” which is to say certainly with differences but largely similar in terms of climate, topography, physical beauty etc. Bars are reasonably similar but without the shows etc. Anyway… looking forward to your visit and direct observations.

I have been to Vietnam twice. Took taxis from HCM city airport, Hanoi airport, and Da Nang airport both times. Never paid more than what was on the meter or was we negotiated and I knew going in how much it was supposed to be to my hotel because I contacted the hotel beforehand. They use Grab in Vietnam so there is usually no problem with taxis. Hotel staff were always polite and helpful and I never had problems with things disappearing from my room and I left cash in there all the time. Getting your phone grabbed is probably something to worry about as I was warned by an elderly woman to be careful as I was taking a video beside the road one day. She did not speak English but through sign language she was showing me that people can snatch my phone if I hold it high taking video near a street. I thought she was being kind to warn me about that. I will go back as soon as I can for another visit.

The long comment story about Vietnam was completely off. The airport in HCMC has very high quality taxis from Mai Linh (green) and Vinasun (white) who always use the meter and will not cheat or rob you. If you take an off-brand taxi from a tout who grabs your bags, and pushes you in the back seat, you're on your own however. Common sense should tell you to avoid those. As far as his massage experience, there are thousands of massage/spa establishments in the country, and if what he described was the norm, everybody would know about it. Service will be better or worse in different establishments, of course, but in general businesses don't make money by setting up their customers with fake cop shake-downs. Finally, in 8 years of living in Vietnam, I've never had anything stolen from me. Not from my luggage, my room, my house, or out of my hand in the street. If you look at my KZbin channel, you'll see hundreds of hours of me live streaming in the streets holding a cell phone and gimbal. Nobody has ever even tried to snatch them from me. You were right to be skeptical about that comment, Peter. It's not even close to reality.

I feel like in Thailand they're only smiling so that they can extract money from you. it's a bit disingenuous there. Hi Peter, I've spent the last two and a half years living in Saigon, Vietnam as an International School Teacher. Whilst my experience may be different due to the borders being closed up until the past 5 months but here are my thoughts. The Vietnamese are overall very helpful and friendly and love speaking to and helping foreigners. However, it's a communist country so is naturally less foreigner friendly in terms of English speakers and ease of traveling around the country. It's a beautiful country that is probably around 30 years behind Thailand developmentally due to only opening up to foreigners in the 1990s. Bag and phone snatching are common as are fake taxis but can be easily avoided with some common sense. There are plenty of taxi apps that you can use such as Grab, GoJek, Be, Vinasun and Mai Linh that are extremely safe the fare is visible in advance. It's always common knowledge to not be on your phone near the edge of the sidewalk and to have your bag across your body rather than over one shoulder. In terms of the other scams mentioned, as long as expectations are clear in advance I've never heard of anybody having a problem. I don't think Saigon compares to Bangkok in terms of nightlife or 'western" feel but it's still a wonderful place to live. The motorbike is king and it's easy to find a beer for around 1/2 dollars which is fine by me I get paid a lot more in Saigon than I would do in Bangkok so I'm happy where I am buy love visiting the Land of Smiles at least 3 times a year. I have a couple of stories from my visits to Thailand so I'll try write then down for you when I get the chance.

In Sydney if you dare smile or say hi to a stranger lady, most of people think you are after something or mentality. I am a new disability support worker, my schizophrenia client always started a chat with strangers in the shopping mall when we are shopping. Most of the ladies are smile and happy to chat with him. He is a total white guy with blue eyes in his middle of 50s. He told me, why ladies are happy to talk to him, because he has a baby face. Yes, he looks very innocent. I think he speak as local dialogues to chat with locals which I hardly understand his express. As your story said, Chinese are money worshiped now, and when the ladies come to the west , they changed to behave like locals. I like Thai massage very much, visited some venues here, most them are money driven without warm attitude, which is matching this business racing busy Sydney atmosphere. But I met a very smiley and good about real Thai Masge therapist lady in my crappy suburb. But after several months loyal visiting I stop to visit her shop, because she got angry with my arising during the session. Her touch was very wakening up, but I didn’t ask anything. She has a family with a Laos husband and a boy living a big farm in the fridge of the city. I need to get to know real thai, have to visit thai by my own. Learning thai hard every day, it’s a difficult language for mastering. Not like English is Pissy Easy to blur out.

I've been to Vietnam and can't remember any of that. Before you go anywhere you should do thorough research on mitigating scams. I lived in China for years and there used to be quite harsh taxi scams in Guangzhou, where I lived. I also had quite a bad taxi driver going from Hua Hin to Dong Muang airport with my kids. I agreed a price with an agent and the taxi driver was trying to weasel more money out of me by creating a atmosphere in the car. My kids were making a bit of noise in the beginning, but then fell asleep. He took an extra fuel stop, I think, in order to claim more cash later on. He did exactly that and I said he agreed the price - I'm not paying any more. It's much easier and better for customers to use apps anywhere in South East Asia.

Who uses taxis? In Vietnam always Grab, in Thailand always Bolt. With a “regular taxi”, you pay 3-4 times more in both countries. Moreover in VN you need Google Translate, which is not the case for Grab because the driver knows your destination (just like Uber).

Peter I served in Vietnam during the war and have went back twice since the war. When there during the war it was a war torn country and there were some scams but they were from Vietnamese and also from the troops (American). My two trips back after the war i found the people very friendly and Vietnam to be a beautiful country. I also found it to be somewhat more expensive than Thailand but still reasonable. As for scams i didn't have anyone try to scam me about anything on either of my trips. Gary

Vietnam is awesome. It's best to use a ride share app or pay for your taxi inside the airport. Once you get outside there are a few people asking if you need a cab, and they are always way too expensive. The Vietnamese people are very kind and generous. The food is cheap and delicious. Hotels are great. I've stayed in $25 a night places up to 300 per night. Most of the cheap ones also include a limited breakfast. Hot water can be an issue in the cheaper ones. Pick pockets and bag snatching is around but some common sense goes a long way and I have never been a victim in the 25 years of frequenting vietnam. Tours and entrance fees are very cheap. The traffic is just awful. Traffic laws are just a suggestion. I married a Vietnamese lady and have traveled many times to South Vietnam.

If the Vietnam stories are true it probably happened to other people, or it happened to him over the course of a longer period. Compared to Bangkok, I did observe there was a strong mercenary attitude in the main HCMC tourist areas, so I often felt I had to be constantly on my toes. The Vietnamese I saw were very hardworking & never once did I see anyone just lazing about. Once I stopped one of those hawkers selling drinks & asked for the cheap mineral water. The hawker instead quickly took out a large coconut, cut the top open with a machete, handed it to me & demanded an exorbitant price. I would have refused but he was flashing that large machete in his hand. Just my personal experience but I generally had a great time in HCMC.

Story 5 guy, American Woman (stay away from me) by the guess who was my theme song for much of my single life. I later learned that Midwestern and southern American women are different from the ones here on the west coast but by then I already had a (wonderful) south American bride. The western women who look down on us for looking overseas for love also look down on, for example, Asian women who they portray as being these doormats who let their significant others walk all over them. In case any of your viewers watch too much TV and have come to that conclusion also, take it from someone who's had relationships, both romantic and non-romantic with Asian women, the private persona can be very different from the harmonious public one. I'm sure Peter and story 5 guy can vouch for this. You may have noticed Peter reading stories of women trashing hotel rooms because they were unhappy with the fellow they'd been dealing with. I assure you it's not just bar girls that are capable of such unhinged rage...

I've been to Vietnam several times, and stayed there once for a couple of months. The things mentionened in the story are true, but their occurrence is rare. Vinasun is the company you look for at the aiport, they are very reliable and 0 scams. The special "barber shops" are the place to get that treatment, and the best ones are far fron district 1. Vietnam is absolutely fine with the most beautiful girls in southeast asia.

The negative story of Vietnam is news to me, I have been there a few times & never experienced any of this, I do remember having some women with a baby begging & a guy wanting to polish my sandles while I was eating on a sidewalk restaurant which was annoying, but the staff told them to go away, well getting back to the stories, I really liked the second story & it's funny how the lady sleeping suddenly sprung out of her beauty sleep to chase after the guy & even more amusing that the taxi driver said that it was a ladyboy, well if it walks like a Man, talks like a Man it can most probably run like one, on a serious note, giving the middle finger to anyone in Thailand is not a good idea even when they are on foot.....Pete, it must be a Brit thing as I also like to book a double room as I too like the big bed & you never know when you might need the extra leg room......🤭 P.S looking forward to seeing some videos of you out in the field, I'm heading off to Thailand at the beginning of November for 6 months & I can't wait!

I've been really liking all the stories, whether I ever visit Thailand or not, thanks! I'd like to add and confirm that I feel that the environment makes a huge difference. transplant someone from one country and culture to the US and the result will be a change such that the person will be neither as they were in their own country nor like a person raised in the US. such changes will tend to be negative. I think it might have something to do with a loss of the familiarity of home and family along with an expectation that the US is some kind of paradise (it's not). looks like westernization effects take place surprisingly quickly too. the whole point of being with a Thai girl is that she's not westernized, right? these effects seem to lead to amplified feelings of disappointment, resentment, entitlement, and more sucky things. you've been warned to enjoy beautiful creatures only in their native habitat 😎

Regarding the Vietnam comment. I would say his may be an edge case. As others have written (for transportation) Grab (and Phuc Long for coffee and tea) are the way to go in Vietnam. Also as regards to massage parlors. You get what you pay for, and based on that your mileage may vary. So know what level of service you are looking for, and how much it should cost. Do your research and if possible get a local reference or referral. Most importantly Vietnam is a varied country, Saigon is different from Danang is different from Nha Trang is different from Hoi An, Hue and Hanoi. I had a wonderful time in all those places and already dreaming about my next trip along with a first time trip to Thailand. People will try to hustle you wherever you are in the world if you aren’t a local and they think you are brand new. In my experience, most times a respectful but assertive calling-out of the issue resolves it and all parties can move on. Regarding the Thailand stories It never ceases to amaze me how quickly guys are willing to come to blows with little to no knowledge of the scenario they find themselves in. It’s one thing if danger is imminent or soft power isn’t working. I tell guys, there are place in this world that you can get the piss beat out of you at best, for what would be considered a slight in the West. Anyway, great stories, and gents be smart, safe and enjoy.

I got scammed big time in Saigon/HCMC by a taxi having a fake meter. It was my first time there and I was arriving by bus from Cambodia. Once I got out of the bus, a driver comes up to me and picks my bag and puts it into his trunk. The fake meter was showing crazy prices and I ended up paying 50 USD for a ride of a 4-5 USD value. When I understood the scam and said I didn’t have this kind of money, the guy said he would keep my luggage (in the trunk) to compensate for it. I then paid and got out, wrote the license plate on my phone and told the hotel reception. They replied it happens all the time and the police won’t do anything. This was in 2010.

Spent a few days in District 1 Saigon, I would agree somewhat with some of the comments read out, as a westerner you are the target for a scam, the normal ones are the street hawker offering you a donut to try then demanding money, motor bike taxis charging 6$ for a 1 km ride. And asking to be paid in $ you really have to have your witts about you, it becomes very tireing after a day or two, Thailand is so much easier on all levels

Making a scene with service staff rarely works, unless you are a VIP who spends a lot of money or celebrity that can get into the news (bad press). He would've prob would've went with here's an $100 USD "tip" (or whatever amount they find reasonable to prevent a divorce) if you say it was an error on the bill (say someone keyed in the room number wrong), and have them update the system and reprint the bill without the surcharge (and pay any fees in cash). Sugar (money) is always better than a stick when encouraging someone to do something.

Hi Pete, Was interested in the cultural summation you mentioned. As a generalisation I think it is true, but not every case. From my experience many Asians have a fixation on money and wealth, yes predominantly mainland Chinese, then Vietnamese. The Japanese and Koreans not so much, but a much larger work ethic/focus. As for South East Asians, Thais are the most outgoing and friendliest.

Vietnam , in Saigon, has one bad street with rip of massage. He must be talking about bieu vien street in district one. If you get off this street there are very nice girls but most dont speak English best to ask your hotel doorman to help you for a tip. As for Taxi it is true they can rip you off from the airport but just get the bus with help of Google maps or get a fixed price with grab taxi. I would say the Philippines is the best choice in Asia as they speak English and have a similar Christian culture to the west.

Let the backpackers take the bus, especially if you have luggages. The taxi fare from the airport to the hotel is less than $10 USD! You just make sure to take either Vinasun or Mai Linh. Even if the driver take a longer route, it'll only a few extra dollars. You can save a few bucks eating Vietnamese food. What visitors need to avoid being scammed by those shoe shiners and coconut sellers who are around the tourists' areas.

Never understood why Western women look down on men who seek love overseas. After all, they are "strong, independent, and don't need no men". Plus, Western women have *declared* they need men like a fish needs a bicycle. To me, having a man give up *HALF* of his possessions in exchange for the SAME services she gave for FREE (when she was young, btw) was the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

Dear TB, so I won't defend the guy's bad experience in VN other than stating the fact that ppl will get scammed at ALL touristy places. (For context, I was born VN but live in USA since 1980; I have been back to VN several times and the last was 2008.) So the guy with the bad experience is unusual and not all details are accurate. 1) It's obvious that not all taxis are scammers. 2) The money exchange rate is not correct. 2,300 dong = $1. In his comment he states several inconsistencies when it comes to currency. So if you can't state the facts then perhaps everything you remember is muddy and thus not entirely correct? But whatever. 3) To ALL non Asians, if you "want / expect / hope" for the wild time like in Thailand DO NOT COME TO VIETNAM. 🤣🤣🤣 VN is not constructed on the same level as Thailand when it comes to fleshy pleasure. 4) Yes, VN is noisy with motorbikes but understand this non Asians, that much of Asia is crowded and not as developed as western countries. So the guy had a bad experience; it is what it is. I just don't think he remembers it with all the details. I have been to Thailand, mostly Bangkok, in 2004; been to Paris, France; lived in Rome, Italy and at each place there were plenty of scamming going on. I just didn't get suckered.

That’s not to say it never happens but basic research about legit taxis, hotels and possible scams is basic requirements. It’s been very safe traveling with family. Stick to using Vinasun taxis and highly rated hotels like Harmony Saigon and you’ll have no issues. Lot’s to see and experience so don’t miss out.

Knowing a few Thai women who have married farang and gone to live with them in their countries, as in your last story, my thoughts are that they are either one of four types: i) Genuine lovely women who assimilate into the new culture well, making for a happy outcome for all ii) Genuine lovely women who struggle in the new culture and are somewhat lost and bewildered. They need time and support. It may or may not work out. Western cultures can be very confronting and lonely (and cold) iii) Genuine women who have a total misconception of western life and find western culture just too unacceptable. Either move back to Thailand with them or let them break up with you. iv) No-so-genuine women that only saw their farang husband as a future meal-ticket. Success in the relationship will depend on your financial resources. Working girls can make good wives. They are pragmatic as they know they cannot work forever and usually ultimately want children. Divorced women who already have children are really looking for security for their children. There is a bit of a taboo for Asian men to marry women with children, so farang who are good providers will usually find they make good wives.

Hi Pete (my apologies for naming you Chris) I will mention this though I was nearly caught out by a street vendor in Ho Chi Minh city, when I was there. I bought an article from a vendor of whom there are many, Having paid several hundred thousand Dong for it, She duly gave me my change of many thousands of dong back to me.. As i am a dummy getting easily confused with the big numbers in the denominations I duly started to check the amount that she had given me, this is where I couldn't keep up with the currency they have in respects of the of the Dong. ie $64 AU = 1,000000 Dong I had all this money she had given me in change. I was totally confused and the vendor at this stage was moving on. Obviously I started to count my change and found it to be very short of what was expected, so i took off after her i was following her for quite a few blocks as she was also carrying her wares, i still couldn't catch up with her. I ended up in a park across the road where there where other vendors there, so ended up speaking to a another lady vendor there telling her about my plight. Surprisingly this vendor reimbursed me for my losses. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes there are taxi drivers and vendors and others who will rip you off, but Caveat emptor is a Latin phrase that translates to "let the buyer beware." I also met a charming old man and a lovely Vietnam lady. Another story.. I have now listened to the opening story and also agree with your comments..Take care Rob..from Oz..

Yes, Vietnam unfortunately is not a very friendly country in this regard. Especially Saigon is a bit dangerous. I got mugged right in front of the Continental Hotel by two guys on a motorbike stopping next to me and pulling out the money from my back pocket which I had just picked up from a money exchange place in the city. The two guys on the motorbike must have followed me from there. I have traveled the world. This only happened to me in Vietnam! In Saigon guys on motorbikes will also snatch your (hand) bag or your phone when driving by the sidewalk. So be careful in Vietnam. And yes, forget about massages in V. Wait until u get to Thailand!!

This is a true story from one of my close friends from elementary school: His father had a furniture shop in Los Angeles in the 1990s in North Broadway Street. His father took on "investments" from friends and other people for his business. Instead of using the money for his business, he took the money and went to Vietnam with his family with the intent of building a hotel on the beachfront. In Vietnam, you can't do that as a foreign investor, so he built the hotel with other "investors". They were basically corrupt government officials in Vietnam with high positions in order to get projects approved. Long story short, the day the hotel was completed, they shot his father and killed him. The same officials told their family they had two choices: they either leave the country or they will be killed. Obviously, they choose the second option and left the country. My brother was in the same airplane on the way back to the country. He explained the situation to my brother since they were also good friends. Obviously, their business in America went bankrupt and I don't know what happened to them afterwards. They had a well known business in the Los Angeles Asian community in our area for decades. I still have furniture that I bought from them when they were in business.

Now I bring up what I have said before Pete. I like your story commentary and extra notes. Maybe thats why some think you read too fast. You dont. It might be the lack of commentary between stories that means they blend one into the other with little to no break in between. Good mixed bag again . As to the last one and the comment " She has never worked in a bar or been a freelancer" I know of 3 guys through my wife who are all happily married some with kids to Thai girls and they say the same but truth is all 3 have done the bar girl thing its just their husbands have no idea and think they were all factory workers.
